Betrayal was how most of the people like Furchtner got caught, and though Dmitriy was known and trusted by them, you could only be betrayed by someone whom you trusted, a fact known to every covert operator in the world. And though they knew Popov both by sight and reputation, they couldn't read minds which, of course, worked quite well for Popov in this case. He allowed himself a quiet smile as he walked into the parking garage, turned left, stopped as though disoriented, and then looked around for any overt signs that he was being followed before finding his bearings and moving on his way. Furchtner's car proved to be in a distant corner on the first level, a blue Volkswagen Golf.
"tauten Tag, " he said on sitting in the right-front seat.
"Good morning, Herr Popov," Furchtner replied in English. It was American in character and almost without accent. He must have watched a lot of television, Dmitriy thought.
The Russian dialed the combinations into the locks of the case, opened the lid and placed it in his host's lap. "You should find everything in order."
"Bulky," the man observed.
"It is a sizable sum," Popov agreed.
Just then suspicion appeared in Furchtner's eyes: That surprised the Russian, until he thought about it for a moment. The KGB had never been lavish in their payments to their agents, but in this attache case was enough cash to enable two people to live comfortably in any of several African countries for a period of some years. Hans was just realizing that, Dmitriy saw, and while part of the German was content just to take the money, the smart portion of his brain suddenly wondered where the money had come from. Better not to wait for the question, Dmitriy thought. "Ah, yes," Popov said quietly. "As you know, many of my colleagues have outwardly turned capitalist in order to survive in my country's new political environment. But we are still the Sword and Shield of the Party, my young friend. That has not changed. It is ironic, I grant you, that now we are better able to compensate our friends for their services. It turns out to be less expensive than maintaining the safe houses which you once enjoyed. I personally find that amusing. In any case, here is your payment, in cash, in advance, in the amount you specified."
"Danke, " Hans Furchtner observed, staring down into the attache case's ten centimeters of depth. Then he hefted the case. "It's heavy."
"True," Dmitriy Arkadeyevich agreed. "But it could be worse. I might have paid you in gold," he joked, to lighten the moment, then decided to make his own play. "Too heavy to carry on the mission?"
"It is a complication, Iosef Andreyevich."
"Well, I can hold the money for you and come to you to deliver it upon the completion of your mission. That is your choice, though I do not recommend it."
"Why is that?" Hans asked. "Honestly, it makes me nervous to travel with so much cash. The West, well, what if I am robbed? This money is my responsibility," he replied theatrically.
Furchtner found that very amusing. "Here, in Osterreich, robbed on the street? My friend, these capitalist sheep are very closely regulated."
"Besides, I do not even know where you will be going, and I really do not need to know-at this time, anyway."
"The Central African Republic is our ultimate destination. We have a friend there who graduated Patrice Lumumba University back in the sixties. He trades in arms to progressive elements. He will put us up for a while, until Petra and I can find suitable housing."
They were either very brave or very foolish to go to that country, Popov thought. Not so long before it had been called the Central African Empire, and had been ruled by "Emperor Bokassa I," a former colonel in the French colonial army, which had once garrisoned this small, poor nation, Bokassa had killed his way to the top, as had so many African chiefs of state, before dying, remarkably enough; of natural causes-so the papers said, anyway; you could never really be sure, could you? The country he'd left behind, a small diamond producer, was somewhat better off economically than was the norm on the dark continent, though not by much. But then, who was to say that Hans and Petra would ever get there?
"Well, my friend, it is your decision," Popov said, patting the attache case still open in Furchtner's lap.
The German considered that for half a minute or so. "I have seen the money," he concluded, to his guest's utter delight. Fiirchtner lifted a thousand-note packet of the cash and riffled it like a deck of cards before putting it back. Next he scribbled a note and placed it inside the case. "There is the name. We will be with him starting late tomorrow, I imagine. All is ready on your end?"
"The American aircraft carrier is in the eastern Mediterranean. Libya will allow your aircraft to pass without interference, but will not allow overflights of any NATO aircraft following you. Instead, their air force will provide the coverage and will lose you due to adverse weather conditions. I will advise you not to use more violence than is necessary. Press and diplomatic pressure has more strength today than it once did."
"We have thought that one through," Hans assured his guest.
Popov wondered briefly about that. But he'd be surprised if they even boarded an aircraft, much less got it to Africa. The problem with "missions" like this one was that no matter how carefully most of its parts had been considered, this chain was decidedly no stronger than its weakest link, and the strength of that link was all too often determined by others, or by chance, which was even worse. Hans and Petra were believers in their political philosophy, and like earlier people who'd believed so much in their religious faith so as to take the most absurd of chances, they would pretend to plan this "mission" through with their limited resources-and when you got down to it, their only resource was their willingness to apply violence to the world; and lots of people had that and substitute hope for expectations, belief for knowledge. They would accept random chance, one of their deadliest enemies, as a neutral element, when a true professional would have sought to eliminate it entirely.
And so their belief structure was really a blindfold, or perhaps a set of blinkers, which denied the two Germans the ability to look objectively at a world that had passed them by, and to which they were unwilling to adapt. But for Popov the real meaning of this was their willingness to let him hold the money. Dmitriy Arkadeyevich had adapted himself quite well to changing circumstances.
"Are you sure, my young friend?"
"Ja, I am sure." Furchtner closed the case, reset the locks, and passed it over to Popov's lap. The Russian accepted the responsibility with proper gravity.
"I will guard this carefully." All the way to my bank in Bern. Then he extended his hand. "Good luck, and please be careful:"
"Danke. We will get you the information you require."

“What about the other roads?” Nick wrote.
“Route 63 has been torn up at the east end of town to replace a culvert,” Soames said. “At the west end of town there appears to have been a rather nasty car accident. Two cars across the road, blocking it entirely. There are smudge pots out, but no sign of state troopers or wreckers.”
He paused, removed his handkerchief, and blew his nose.
“The men working on the culvert are going very slowly, according to Joe Rackman, who lives out that way. I was at the Rackmans’ about two hours ago, looking at their little boy, who is very ill indeed. Joe said that he thinks that the men at the culvert are in fact soldiers, though they’re dressed in state road crew coveralls and driving a state truck.”

Neat game, Larry thought, soon to be followed by Dachau 2000. They’ll love that one. He went to the change booth and got ten dollars in quarters. There was a working phone kiosk next to the Beef’n Brew across the street and he direct-dialed Jane’s Place from memory. Jane’s was a poker parlor where Wayne Stukey sometimes hung out.
Larry plugged quarters into the slot until his hand ached, and the phone began to ring three thousand miles away.

Morris didn't wave at the low-flying aircraft, but wanted to. The French Navy's patrol plane signaled that they were within range of land-based air cover. It would take a very brave Russian sub skipper to want to play games here, with a screen of French diesel subs a few miles north of the convoy lane and several ASW patrol aircraft forming a tricolored umbrella over the convoy.
The French had also sent out a helicopter to collect the Russian submariners. They were being flown to Brest for a full interrogation by NATO intelligence types. Morris didn't envy them the trip. They'd be held by the French, and he had no doubt that the French Navy was in an evil mood after the loss of one of its carriers. The tapes his crew had made of their conversations were also being sent. The Russians had talked among themselves, aided by the chiefs' liquor, and perhaps their whispered conversations had some value.
They were about to turn the convoy over to a mixed British-French escort force and take over a group of forty merchantmen bound for America. Morris stood on the bridge wing, turning every five minutes or so to look at the two half and one full silhouettes that the bosun had painted on both sides of the pilothouse-"No sense having some jerk on the wrong side of the ship missing them," the bosun had pointed out seriously. Their ASW tactics had worked fairly well. With Pharris as outlying sonar picket, and heavy support from the Orions, they had intercepted all but one of the inbound Russian subs. There had been a lot of skepticism on this point, but the tactic had worked, by God. But it had to work better still.
Morris knew that things would be getting harder. For the first trip the Soviets had been able to put no more than a fraction of their submarines into action against them. Those submarines were now forcing their way down the Denmark Strait. The NATO sub force trying to block the passage no longer had the SOSUS line to give them intercept vectors, nor Orions to pounce on the contacts that submarines could not reach. They would score kills, but would they score enough? How much larger would the threat be this week? Morris could see from their return route to the States that they were adding nearly five hundred miles to the passage by looping far to the south-partially because of the Backfires, but more now to dilute the submarine threat. Two threats to worry about. His ship was equipped to deal with only one.
They'd lost a third of the convoy, mainly to aircraft. Could they sustain that? He wondered how the merchant crews were holding up.
They had closed in on the convoy, and he could see the northernmost line of merchies. On the horizon a big container ship was blinking a light at them. Morris raised his glasses to read the signal.

The helicopters would open the war. They had to take out Iraq's early warning net, and they had to get it all.
At ten seconds before 2:38 in a moonless sky over Iraq, eight US AH-64 Apache helicopters zeroed in on their targets. On their forward-looking infrared screens appeared the images of two Iraqi radar sites just north of Saudi Arabia, placed there to detect intruding fighters. They were linked to four Iraqi fighter bases and to the Intelligence Operations Center in Baghdad.
The unseen Apaches hovered low, four miles south of the radars. At the controls of Number 976, 1st Lt. Tom Drew broke radio silence. "Party in ten," he said. On cue, ten seconds later, the helicopters unleashed a salvo of laser-guided Hellfire missiles. "This one's for you, Saddam ," muttered CW03 Dave Jones, the pilot of another Apache.
The shots, fired in the predawn hours of January 17, 1991, marked the start of Operation Desert Storm and were among the most critical of the war, blinding Iraq's early warning net at a key moment. US Central Command relied entirely on the Apaches and USAF special operations helicopters to do the job. "If something had happened and we didn't do 100 percent [destruction]," said one gunner, CW04 Lou Hall, "a lot of people were going to get hurt."
The Apaches did achieve 100 percent destruction, or close to it. Eyewitnesses report that, when the Hellfires hit the targets, the radar bases evaporated in clouds of smoke and flame. In the four and a half minutes it took to complete the task, the Apaches had, in the words of Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, "plucked out the eyes" of Iraq's Soviet-supplied air defenses.

So does not matter if I give away a "spoiler" about season-2 of "Travelers", thinking crazy thoughts of how it seems so relevant
The Faction is a group of individuals who died in the original timeline of the "Travelers" that are the starring character of the streaming-video series
Those Travelers were sent to the very distant past, which is our present time, by their Director
The starring Travelers are not people time-traveled. They are information - in the form of consciousness - permanently transmitted to the very distant past. They take over humans known from records to have otherwise died at a known time and date
From the storyline I have observed, the dialog establishes that the starring Travelers have made changes that reduce the impact of the recklessness of the present-day society
Because of the polluters of this present-day, those people have to live in sheltered domes just to survive, because the people of today are such reckless and shameful polluters, the planet's environment is completely wrecked and hostile to human life
Those starring Travelers have supposedly succeeded enough in their effects - the Director's Grand Plan - that people who were killed by a dome collapse due to harmful environment conditions, in the time before the Travelers came here to this present time, are now suddenly alive
And for them, there is no suddenness about it. They have always been alive
To the starring Travelers, however, those people not killed are now suddenly alive again and are now The Faction
They are group of Travelers who want to ignore the Grand Plan of the Director
So anyone following the Grand Plan is their enemy
In the recent episode I viewed last night - content established a decade ago but only known to me as of last night - The Faction set off a virus plague to kill off 30% of human life on this planet Earth
Fewer polluters, less pollution
The episode also demonstrated variabilities as the timelines repeat. Ultimately, the mission succeeded because of a variability. Also, was it failing because the Director is so incapable as to not recognize that it was the transfer timing of the skydivers causing the mission to fail and apparently resulting in the death of those volunteers. Only one minute later and Wayne would have been in his chute and would not have collided with Carrie. The writers of the story tell us the number of people that die before the characters in the story finally get it right. So did the Director figure out how to use that truck-driver - because someone suddenly said (in the distant future): "Who the fuck is this guy?"
Also formed new in my mind yesterday - obvious to *you* now only because you know about it from *me* - is that solar and wind are not a panacea for what ails this once beautiful planet Earth, for possible reasons I described earlier.
This seems relevant to me this evening sitting here at this same stupid desk and discovering content for the very first time and that seems so profound to me
The past exists for me because I remember it.

There has got to be a way to disconnect these false "memories" and reconnect my real memories into my consciousness.
What about that conflicted memory of being on Stampede Pass that day? How could I remember that? I had no vehicle that could have got me up there back in those days. I never drove my Jeep Wrangler up there. That has got to mean something. If I could just see it.

And when I remember it, I'll know where to go. They're waiting for me now, but I have to consciously remember. I think they send people to walk around me that I should recognize but that I still do not consciously recognize.

Stampede Pass
I must have been lying in bed for over four hours last night and could not fall asleep for that much time and longer because I started thinking during the night last night that Stampede Pass is where I materialized after the L-1011 Stargazer spiraled down from over forty thousand feet after breaking into pieces and then crashed with such force that it virtually vaporized on contact with that ground. I started thinking of how that scene with "Picard" and his wife announcing that dinner was ready could be a detail I created to represent the details I read about the source of the name for Stampede Pass, as well as how "Kirk" mentions that he smell something burning in the kitchen. I thought over many details last night as I hoped to fall asleep and I was thinking of how the dialog with the statue in the 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact" is about how after I understood that my aircraft was unflyable because, for one reason, a wing had just broken off due to impact with debris from the Pegasus rocket that had just exploded in front of my windshield, I was turned around part ways in my seat as the pilot and I had my had outreached to shake the hand of Kerry Burgess and I spoke that flying with had been an honor but the aircraft was spinning too fast for us to shake hands. When I materialized at Stampede Pass I felt as though I had materialized about one inch or two above the ground and I found myself standing there in the woods on that dirt road with absolutely no idea where I was and I was standing there with my hand still reaching out to shake his hand.

The map indicates that if I had traveled in the other direction on that dirt road where I materialized out of thin air then I would have walked past Lizard Lake, only a short distance from the point the map indicates is the summit of Stampede Pass.
I cannot visualize ever seeing that lake but there is a road junction there that is always familiar to me and I think I was standing there looking around and what I could never figure out is how I got up there in the first place.

Iron Horse Trail
After appearing on Stampede Pass, I made the correct choice to start walking to the northeast instead of the other direction the dirt road was leading as it went deeper into the national forest and in a place where I was not even certain if was even on the planet Earth although the construction of that dirt road would have seemed familiar but who the hell knows where I could have been. After walking down the mountain, I was heading for the interstate, I would later see, and shortly before I arrived at the I-5, I crossed over the Iron Horse Trail was runs generally parallel to the interstate I-5 at that point. I found a telephone several hours later and, as I established in the 1998 television series "Seven Days" I called in with my own "Conundrum" code word.

Railroad tracks
There are railroad tracks, according to the map, near the point on the map that is labeled Stampede Pass.
Today I have been thinking that a post-1994 version of Kerry Burgess arrived to talk to Tom Reagan just an hour before the flight and told him that he must make the flight because there were extraterrestrials in space nearby that were monitoring the flight and the flight itself was of no consequence to the them but the event was more of a handshaking event among my group and that group. Tom Reagan had encountered that Future Kerry Burgess before, in the year 1987, and the Future Kerry Burgess showed him, with amusement, his drivers license identification card that was from Washington State and that was issued after the year 2000. That detail was especially interesting because Tom Reagan materialized on the summit of Stampede Pass and he showed up well over one day after the crash had occurred although to him the transition was almost instantaneous and even his wristwatch still showed the time relative to before he materialized after the crash. Before he left for the flight, Tom Reagan took a intravenous blood sample from the hand of that future Kerry Burgess and sent it courier to a special laboratory where he was conducting research and during the flight one of the scientists that works at the lab for Tom made an emergency call to Tom while he was the pilot of the L-1011 Stargazer aircraft and told him, not knowing where the blood came from, that Tom had found the key to the vaccine they were trying to create. The aircraft was destroyed a short while later because saboteurs had infected the aircraft's computer with a computer virus.

I believe that time period represents how the Osirak strike was in the summer of 1981 and I graduated from USNA that next summer, meaning that I went to Iraq around the end of the equivalent of my junior year at the USNA.
A few months ago, I read that the Israeli's who flew the F-16's into Iraq to strike the Osirak facility in 1981 had trained in their new F-16's at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. That gave me a lot of details to ponder.

The Ironman triathlon is one of the most grueling sporting events.
Nearly 2,000 participants from across the United States as well as Canada and Mexico are registered to compete Saturday.
The 2002 Ironman Utah Triathlon is the first of five-year commitment for the event in the state. It is projected to have a $5 million local economic impact annually.
Athletes have 17 hours to complete the event, which begins at 7 a.m.
The Ironman Utah Triathlon is one of five such events in continental North America.
The Utah event allows for 80 qualifying spots for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii, including one slot in each male and female age category.
The event: A 2.4-mile swim in Utah Lake starts in deep water off the north finger of the Utah Lake Stake Park, heading out in a northwest direction and going in a counter-clockwise direction. At the end of the loop, athletes will enter the boat inlet and exit the lake on the middle boat ramp.
A 112-mile cycling segment begins as triathletes exit Utah State Park, heading east on Center Street and proceeding north to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon, to Lincoln Beach on the southeastern shores of Utah Lake and to the north end of Mona Lake before returning to Provo and the BYU campus.
A 26.2-mile marathon takes runners on loops from BYU north to Orem's Center Street, south to southern Provo and then concluding at the BYU Track and Field Complex.
