Ann Richards (Dorothy Ann Willis), American politician (b. Sept.1, 1933, Lakeview, Texas—d. Sept. 13, 2006, Austin, Texas), served (1991–95) as the feisty governor of Texas and was the first woman to gain the office in her own right. During her tenure Richards, an ardent feminist, appointed a record number of women and minorities to state positions. Before entering politics, she taught school. Richards was elected the Texas treasurer in 1982, the first woman to win a state office in 50 years. She first came to national attention as the state treasurer of Texas, when she delivered the keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Richards served as the 45th Governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995 and was defeated for re-election in 1994 by George W. Bush.
