MENTAL PROCESSES ARE RESULT OF MECHANISMS
Says Dr. Stewart Paton in His Fourth Lecture on Study of Human Activities
The fourth of Dr. Stewart Paton's lectures on the Study of Human Activities in relation to Social, Educational and Ethical Problems was delivered yesterday afternoon in Guyot Hall. The particular aspect of the general topic presented was "Synthetic and Inhibitory Mental Mechanisms."
In introducing the subject Dr. Paton defined and discussed the two fundamental processes of all mental activity namely the synthetic and inhibitory. All our most complicated mental processes are the result of these mechanisms, so that what we call sense-perception, intelligence and volition are really the product of these. When we come to the study of such an intricate problem as the will, we greatly simplify the difficulty if we forget that there is any such specific function. It is in reality a complex of many functions.
Mistaken Idea of Justice
Unfortunately all our ideas of justice have been based upon what we think people ought to be rather than on what they actually are, so that our whole penal system rests largely upon retribution rather than on any attempt to assist the individual to find the level at which he is capable of adjusting his life, and to train him in the acquirement of good habits of self-adjustment.
A similar condition prevails in educational methods as is notably evidenced in many systems of examination in which the effort is apparently directed toward discovering the mass of information the student has acquired rather than toward ascertaining with what success the student is solving the problem of the adjustment of himself to his environment and conditions.
