Shirley Give $5 Million For Sculpture Park

Seattle art patrons Jon and Mary Shirley have donated $5 million toward the land-development costs of the Seattle Art Museum's planned waterfront sculpture park at the south end of Myrtle Edwards Park. This brings the total funds raised for the sculpture park to $29.3 million of the $37 million needed. The total includes the cost of acquiring the parcel - which includes a 1.5-acre tidelands - developing the park and endowing it.
With the additional donation from the Shirleys, who previously gave $5 million to endow the sculpture park, the Seattle Art Museum and the Trust for Public Land were yesterday able to officially close on the deal to acquire the parcel. SAM says the park will be completed by 2003.
Because of their financial support, which now totals $10 million, the Shirleys were given the opportunity to name the park. They have chosen to call it The Olympic Sculpture Park

Seattle art patrons Jon and Mary Shirley have donated $5 million toward the land-development costs of the Seattle Art Museum's planned waterfront sculpture park at the south end of Myrtle Edwards Park. This brings the total funds raised for the sculpture park to $29.3 million of the $37 million needed. The total includes the cost of acquiring the parcel - which includes a 1.5-acre tidelands - developing the park and endowing it.
With the additional donation from the Shirleys, who previously gave $5 million to endow the sculpture park, the Seattle Art Museum and the Trust for Public Land were yesterday able to officially close on the deal to acquire the parcel. SAM says the park will be completed by 2003.
Because of their financial support, which now totals $10 million, the Shirleys were given the opportunity to name the park. They have chosen to call it The Olympic Sculpture Park

Justices Question Impact Of Jones Case

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court justices sharply questioned both sides today as lawyers argued whether Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton should be delayed until after he leaves office.
Just one week before Clinton's second-term inauguration, the justices weighed whether Jones can pursue her claim now or must wait until the president becomes a private citizen in four years.
At one point, Justice Antonin Scalia said arguments by Clinton's lawyers that a lawsuit would take up too much of the president's time were not "terribly persuasive."
"We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood . . . and so forth," Scalia said. "The notion that he doesn't have a minute to spare is not credible."
But Scalia and other justices also seemed troubled that allowing Jones to sue now would give a trial judge control over the president's schedule.

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled today that Paula Jones can pursue her sex-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton while he is in office - but left room for a trial judge to delay proceedings if they interfere with the president's duties.
The Constitution does not shield the president from having to face lawsuits over acts unrelated to his official duties, the justices ruled unanimously in a case that already has been a major embarrassment to the president.
Jones' lawyers exulted over the ruling, and a friend of Jones said the former Arkansas state employee "just screamed and yelled and cried" with delight. The lawyers said an apology and admission from Clinton might still head off a trial.
Jones, who has been living in Los Angeles for about three years with her husband, was described by a friend as jubilant. "The two of us just screamed and yelled and cried," said Susan Carpenter-McMillan of San Marino, Calif.
Jones' lawyers, Gilbert Davis and Joseph Cammarata, called the ruling a resounding victory. It shows that "she was willing to stand up against privilege, power and position to redeem her reputation," Davis said.

WASHINGTON - Lawyers for Paula Jones filed papers on Saturday accusing President Clinton of obstruction of justice and arguing that a trial should proceed on Jones' charges that she was sexually harassed by Clinton in 1991 in a hotel in Little Rock, Ark., when he was governor there.
In the new papers and an accompanying press release, the attorneys made an accusation against Clinton from 20 years ago involving a woman who had not been mentioned in the Jones case previously. Clinton's attorney said it was an act of desperation and the woman's lawyer said, "These are vicious rumors and allegations. We're not going to take any position. We're not going to get involved."
The arguments came in response to a motion filed eight days ago by Robert Bennett, a lawyer for Clinton, seeking dismissal of Jones' lawsuit. At the time, March 20, Bennett called the contents of the lawsuit "garbage" and said it was "a politically motivated attack on President Clinton."
But in Saturday's filing, in Federal District Court in Little Rock, Jones' lawyers responded by arguing that they had presented sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial that is scheduled for May 27 there.

To Hell and Back is a war film released in 1955. It was directed by Jesse Hibbs and starred Audie Murphy as himself. It is based on the 1949 autobiography of the same name and is an account of Murphy's World War II experiences as a soldier in the U.S. Army.
The action for which Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor is depicted near the end of the film. In January 1945, near Holzwihr, France, Murphy's company is forced to retreat in the face of a fierce German attack. However, Murphy remains behind at the edge of a forest to direct artillery fire on the advancing enemy infantry and armor. As the Germans close on his position, Murphy jumps onto an abandoned M4 Sherman tank (he actually performed this action atop an M10 tank destroyer) and uses its .50-caliber machine gun to hold the enemy at bay, even though the vehicle is on fire and may explode at any moment. Although wounded and dangerously exposed to enemy fire, Murphy single-handedly turns back the German attack, thereby saving his company. After a period of hospitalization, he is returned to duty. The film ends with Murphy's Medal of Honor ceremony, after which he is shown reviewing troops of the Third Infantry Division passing in review.

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court justices sharply questioned both sides today as lawyers argued whether Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton should be delayed until after he leaves office.
Just one week before Clinton's second-term inauguration, the justices weighed whether Jones can pursue her claim now or must wait until the president becomes a private citizen in four years.
At one point, Justice Antonin Scalia said arguments by Clinton's lawyers that a lawsuit would take up too much of the president's time were not "terribly persuasive."
"We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood . . . and so forth," Scalia said. "The notion that he doesn't have a minute to spare is not credible."
But Scalia and other justices also seemed troubled that allowing Jones to sue now would give a trial judge control over the president's schedule.

The Burden of proof (Latin: onus probandi) is the obligation to shift the assumed conclusion away from an oppositional opinion to one's own position (this may be either a negative or positive claim). The burden of proof may only be fulfilled by evidence.

Supreme Court Denies Clinton Protection From Paula Jones Suit -- But Trial Judge Could Still Delay Case Out Of `High Respect' For Office

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled today that Paula Jones can pursue her sex-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton while he is in office - but left room for a trial judge to delay proceedings if they interfere with the president's duties.
The Constitution does not shield the president from having to face lawsuits over acts unrelated to his official duties, the justices ruled unanimously in a case that already has been a major embarrassment to the president.
Jones' lawyers exulted over the ruling, and a friend of Jones said the former Arkansas state employee "just screamed and yelled and cried" with delight. The lawyers said an apology and admission from Clinton might still head off a trial.
Jones, who has been living in Los Angeles for about three years with her husband, was described by a friend as jubilant. "The two of us just screamed and yelled and cried," said Susan Carpenter-McMillan of San Marino, Calif.
Jones' lawyers, Gilbert Davis and Joseph Cammarata, called the ruling a resounding victory. It shows that "she was willing to stand up against privilege, power and position to redeem her reputation," Davis said.

LOS ANGELES -- Defense lawyers demanded access Monday to blood samples and gloves in the murder case against O.J. Simpson and said they may present their own evidence and call witnesses at a preliminary hearing.
Lawyer Robert Shapiro asked the court for immediate access to blood samples, Simpson's white Ford Bronco, a ski cap or mask found near the victims, and gloves found at the crime scene and at Simpson's Brentwood estate. The prosecution said last week there was no ski mask.

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled today that Paula Jones can pursue her sex-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton while he is in office - but left room for a trial judge to delay proceedings if they interfere with the president's duties.
The Constitution does not shield the president from having to face lawsuits over acts unrelated to his official duties, the justices ruled unanimously in a case that already has been a major embarrassment to the president.
Jones' lawyers exulted over the ruling, and a friend of Jones said the former Arkansas state employee "just screamed and yelled and cried" with delight. The lawyers said an apology and admission from Clinton might still head off a trial.

President Clinton's lawyers sought today to move up the date of the trial on Paula Corbin Jones's sexual misconduct charges, in a move to regain the initiative as accusations about the President ricochet across the nation.
In papers filed with a Federal judge in Arkansas, Mr. Clinton's lawyers said that starting the trial earlier than its scheduled date of May 27 would allow them to respond to the charges in a courtroom, where some of the President's accusers could be cross-examined.
In particular, Mr. Clinton's lawyers have said that they believed they could use the trial to undermine the credibility of witnesses against him, including Monica S. Lewinsky, if the former White House intern changes her story and acknowledges an affair with Mr. Clinton.
Whatever Ms. Lewinsky says, they are eager to attack her onetime friend Linda R. Tripp, a Pentagon aide who has said she secretly recorded conversations with Ms. Lewinsky describing sexual relations with Mr. Clinton. Ms. Tripp has said she gave the tapes to the independent counsel, Kenneth W. Starr.

WASHINGTON - Paula Jones' lawyers, fighting to keep her sexual harassment suit against President Clinton alive, filed documents Friday accusing him of making sexual advances toward several women and engaging in a "vast enterprise" to cover up those relationships.
The documents, almost 700 pages of legal arguments and sworn statements, detailed several alleged sexual encounters involving Clinton when he was governor of Arkansas and, later, after he became president.
Filed in Little Rock, Ark., the documents were Jones' response to a motion by the president's legal team seeking to have her lawsuit dismissed without a trial. Jones' case is set for a federal trial May 27.

Clinton gives a forceful denial / President defends his conduct

WASHINGTON - Waving his finger and pounding a lectern, President Clinton adamantly denied having "sexual relations" with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky as he tried again Monday to reassure the public and his allies.
Meanwhile, talks between Lewinsky's attorney and independent counsel Kenneth Starr's office took a critical turn late Monday as Lewinsky offered a "complete" statement, or proffer. The statement would outline "what she would offer as testimony" in return for immunity from possible prosecution. Previously, she has refused to make such a legal description of her possible testimony.
"The ball is totally in Judge Starr's court and Judge Starr has to tell us what he wants to do," William Ginsburg, her attorney, said. His statement implied Lewinsky would refute portions of her previous sworn statement denying an affair.
Starr was to begin calling witnesses before a grand jury today, including Vernon Jordan, the Clinton friend who helped Lewinsky find an attorney and a new job, and numerous White House aides.

WASHINGTON - Waving his finger and pounding a lectern, President Clinton adamantly denied having "sexual relations" with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky as he tried again Monday to reassure the public and his allies.
On the eve of his State of the Union address and with his presidency in crisis, Clinton sought to forcefully defuse explosive allegations that he had an 18-month relationship with Lewinsky, 24, and then urged her to lie about it.
"I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time, never," Clinton said, standing beneath the White House portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt.

This afternoon in this room, from this chair, I testified before the Office of Independent Counsel and the grand jury.
I answered their questions truthfully, including questions about my private life, questions no American citizen would ever want to answer.
Still, I must take complete responsibility for all my actions, both public and private. And that is why I am speaking to you tonight.
As you know, in a deposition in January, I was asked questions about my relationship with Monica Lewinsky. While my answers were legally accurate, I did not volunteer information.
Indeed, I did have a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am solely and completely responsible.
But I told the grand jury today and I say to you now that at no time did I ask anyone to lie, to hide or destroy evidence or to take any other unlawful action.
