E-mail leads to charge of extortion
SALT LAKE CITY — A South Carolina man was charged yesterday with trying to extort $3 million for the safe return of Elizabeth Smart, the 14-year-old girl who vanished from her bedroom in June.
The FBI said it couldn't rule out Walter K. Holloway, 18, as the kidnapper until they found him Tuesday in Charleston, S.C., typing his latest demands by e-mail.
According to an arrest warrant, Holloway confessed he kept up a regular correspondence with Salt Lake City police and the Smart family, boasting he was "the only real kidnapper," threatening to hurt the girl and demanding, "Tell Ed he can have Elizabeth back as soon as I get the ransom."
Holloway sent 38 messages over two months before the FBI found him in front of a computer Tuesday at his parents' house.
Ed Smart said the bungled extortion "makes me sick" and kept authorities from devoting full attention to finding his daughter.
Holloway was being held on felony charges of extortion and sending threatening messages across state lines. The charges carry up to 25 years in prison, said U.S. Attorney Paul Warner, who plans to seek a grand-jury indictment next week and bring Holloway to Salt Lake City.

Denial
Denial is a defense mechanism' postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence
Types of Denial
Denial of fact: This form of denial is where someone avoids a fact by lying. This lying can take the form of an outright falsehood (commission), leaving out certain details in order to tailor a story (omission), or by falsely agreeing to something (assent, also referred to as "yesing" behavior). Someone who is in denial of fact is typically using lies in order to avoid facts that they think may be potentially painful to themselves or others.
Denial of responsibility: This form of denial involves avoiding personal responsibility by blaming, minimizing or justifying. Blaming is a direct statement shifting culpability and may overlap with denial of fact. Minimizing is an attempt to make the effects or results of an action appear to be less harmful than they may actually be. Justifying is when someone takes a choice and attempts to make that choice look okay due to their perception of what is "right" in a situation. Someone using denial of responsibility is usually attempting to avoid potential harm or pain by shifting attention away from themselves.
Denial of impact: Denial of impact involves a person avoiding thinking about or understanding the harms their behavior have caused to themselves or others. By doing this, that person is able to avoid feeling a sense of guilt and it can prevent that person from developing remorse or empathy for others. Denial of impact reduces or eliminates a sense of pain or harm from poor decisions.
Denial of awareness: This type of denial is best discussed by looking at the concept of state dependent learning. People using this type of denial will avoid pain and harm by stating they were in a different state of awareness (such as alcohol or drug intoxication or on occasion mental health related). This type of denial often overlaps with denial of responsibility.
Denial of cycle: Many who use this type of denial will say things such as, "it just happened." Denial of cycle is where a person avoids looking at their decisions leading up to an event or does not consider their pattern of decision making and how harmful behavior is repeated. The pain and harm being avoided by this type of denial is more of the effort needed to change the focus from a singular event to looking at preceding events. It can also serve as a way to blame or justify behavior (see above).
Denial of denial: This can be a difficult concept for many people to identify in themselves, but is a major barrier to changing hurtful behaviors. Denial of denial involves thoughts, actions and behaviors which bolster confidence that nothing needs to be changed in one's personal behavior. This form of denial typically overlaps with all of the other forms of denial, but involves more self-delusion.

LOS ANGELES - With the frightened voice of Nicole Brown Simpson echoing in the courtroom for one last, haunting time, prosecutors in the O.J. Simpson murder trial concluded their final arguments Friday, and the sequestered jury was handed the case.
In a solemn but dramatic finale, prosecutor Marcia Clark replayed for jurors the audiotapes of calls that Nicole Simpson made to the 911 emergency system in 1989 and 1993 during violent confrontations with the former football star. As the tapes played, Clark showed a series of pictures beginning with Nicole Simpson's battered face and ending with her and friend Ron Goldman's bodies lying in pools of blood on her townhouse walkway.
Simpson's ex-wife and Goldman were fatally stabbed June 12, 1994.
"I don't have to say anything else,"an emotional Clark said.
In a case that has seen no shortage of verbiage, it was probably a relief for the jury to hear those words. For nearly nine months they have sat through the testimony of 126 witnesses filling over 45,000 pages of trial record, looked at hundreds of exhibits and spent countless hours sitting idle as points of the law were argued.
Within minutes of receiving the case Friday, the jurors had elected a foreman. Deliberations will begin Monday morning.

Viewers will be able to find out whether the former football star is guilty or innocent by tuning in to live coverage at noon Houston time on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Court TV, and even sports channel ESPN.
A number of specials are planned through the day. Programs like CBS' "Late, Late Show with Tom Snyder" said they will scrap previous plans to focus on the story.
Some newscasters were already in place in Los Angeles: Bryant Gumbel came out Monday for NBC's Today. But network anchors appeared ready to handle the story from New York.
ABC's Peter Jennings will anchor the verdict announcement from New York, the network said. Jennings also will anchor a Simpson special, set for 9 p.m. Tuesday.
CBS' Dan Rather will also remain in New York to anchor live coverage beginning at 11 a.m. A primetime special, with Rather as host, also was planned; the air time Tuesday was undetermined.
Gumbel was being joined by Katie Couric for an expanded 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Today. Anchor Tom Brokaw, in New York, was to take over coverage from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.

LOS ANGELES - With the frightened voice of Nicole Brown Simpson echoing in the courtroom for one last, haunting time, prosecutors in the O.J. Simpson murder trial concluded their final arguments Friday, and the sequestered jury was handed the case.
In a solemn but dramatic finale, prosecutor Marcia Clark replayed for jurors the audiotapes of calls that Nicole Simpson made to the 911 emergency system in 1989 and 1993 during violent confrontations with the former football star. As the tapes played, Clark showed a series of pictures beginning with Nicole Simpson's battered face and ending with her and friend Ron Goldman's bodies lying in pools of blood on her townhouse walkway.
Simpson's ex-wife and Goldman were fatally stabbed June 12, 1994.
"I don't have to say anything else,"an emotional Clark said.
In a case that has seen no shortage of verbiage, it was probably a relief for the jury to hear those words. For nearly nine months they have sat through the testimony of 126 witnesses filling over 45,000 pages of trial record, looked at hundreds of exhibits and spent countless hours sitting idle as points of the law were argued.
Within minutes of receiving the case Friday, the jurors had elected a foreman. Deliberations will begin Monday morning.

WASHINGTON - Lawyers for Paula Jones filed papers on Saturday accusing President Clinton of obstruction of justice and arguing that a trial should proceed on Jones' charges that she was sexually harassed by Clinton in 1991 in a hotel in Little Rock, Ark., when he was governor there.
In the new papers and an accompanying press release, the attorneys made an accusation against Clinton from 20 years ago involving a woman who had not been mentioned in the Jones case previously. Clinton's attorney said it was an act of desperation and the woman's lawyer said, "These are vicious rumors and allegations. We're not going to take any position. We're not going to get involved."
The arguments came in response to a motion filed eight days ago by Robert Bennett, a lawyer for Clinton, seeking dismissal of Jones' lawsuit. At the time, March 20, Bennett called the contents of the lawsuit "garbage" and said it was "a politically motivated attack on President Clinton."
But in Saturday's filing, in Federal District Court in Little Rock, Jones' lawyers responded by arguing that they had presented sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial that is scheduled for May 27 there.

To Hell and Back is a war film released in 1955. It was directed by Jesse Hibbs and starred Audie Murphy as himself. It is based on the 1949 autobiography of the same name and is an account of Murphy's World War II experiences as a soldier in the U.S. Army.
The action for which Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor is depicted near the end of the film. In January 1945, near Holzwihr, France, Murphy's company is forced to retreat in the face of a fierce German attack. However, Murphy remains behind at the edge of a forest to direct artillery fire on the advancing enemy infantry and armor. As the Germans close on his position, Murphy jumps onto an abandoned M4 Sherman tank (he actually performed this action atop an M10 tank destroyer) and uses its .50-caliber machine gun to hold the enemy at bay, even though the vehicle is on fire and may explode at any moment. Although wounded and dangerously exposed to enemy fire, Murphy single-handedly turns back the German attack, thereby saving his company. After a period of hospitalization, he is returned to duty. The film ends with Murphy's Medal of Honor ceremony, after which he is shown reviewing troops of the Third Infantry Division passing in review.

Justices Question Impact Of Jones Case

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court justices sharply questioned both sides today as lawyers argued whether Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton should be delayed until after he leaves office.
Just one week before Clinton's second-term inauguration, the justices weighed whether Jones can pursue her claim now or must wait until the president becomes a private citizen in four years.
At one point, Justice Antonin Scalia said arguments by Clinton's lawyers that a lawsuit would take up too much of the president's time were not "terribly persuasive."
"We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood . . . and so forth," Scalia said. "The notion that he doesn't have a minute to spare is not credible."
But Scalia and other justices also seemed troubled that allowing Jones to sue now would give a trial judge control over the president's schedule.

The Burden of proof (Latin: onus probandi) is the obligation to shift the assumed conclusion away from an oppositional opinion to one's own position (this may be either a negative or positive claim). The burden of proof may only be fulfilled by evidence.

Prince Harry tours WTC site in 1st US visit

NEW YORK -- Prince Harry bowed his head in prayer at ground zero Friday, then toured the Sept. 11 attack site and shook New Yorkers' hands in his first official visit to the United States.
"Big question - when is this supposed to be finished?" the 24-year-old prince asked two officials showing him rebuilding plans of the World Trade Center site.
