Most of my jokes fall in the “dad” genre, so I didn’t even try to keep up with @cameronesposito. Here we talk rugby, leadership, accepting ourselves and yes....lots of space. My take away? It’s important to share the lessons we learn with others. And that that’s not always easy.

Red Storm Rising (1986) - Tom Clancy

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 13. – The Strangers Arrive and Depart

AACHEN, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

"Siegfried Baum" awoke six hours later to see three men wearing surgical garb. The effect of the anesthesia still heavy on him, his eyes could not focus properly.

"How are you feeling?" one asked. In Russian.

"What happened to me?" The major answered in Russian.

Ach so. "You were struck by a car and you are now in a military hospital," the man lied. They were still in Aachen, near the German-Belgian frontier.

"What . . . I was just coming out to-" The major's voice was that of a drunken man, but it stopped abruptly. His eyes tried to focus properly.

"It is all finished for you, my friend." Now the speaker switched to German. "We know you are a Soviet officer, and you were found in possession of classified government documents. Tell me, what is your interest in Lammersdorf?"

"I have nothing to say," replied "Baum" in German.

"A little late for that," the interrogator chided, switching back to Russian. "But we'll make it easy for you. The surgeon tells us that it is now safe to try a new, ah, medication for you, and you will tell us everything you know. Be serious. No one can resist this form of questioning. You might also wish to consider your position," the man said more harshly. "You are an officer in the army of a foreign government, here in the Federal Republic illegally, traveling with false papers, and in possession of secret documents. At the least, we can imprison you for life. But, given what your government is doing at the moment, we are not concerned with 'least' measures. If you cooperate you will live, and probably be exchanged back to the Soviet Union at a later date for a German agent. We will even say that we got all our information due to the use of drugs; no harm could possibly come to you from this. If you do not cooperate, you will die of injuries received in a motor accident."

"I have a family," Major Andre Chernyavin said quietly, trying to remember his duty. The combination of fear and drug-induced haze made a hash of his emotions. He couldn't tell there was a vial of sodium pentothol dripping into his IV line, and already impairing his higher brain functions. Soon he would be unable to consider the long-term consequences of his action. Only the here and now would matter.

"They will come to no harm," Colonel Weber promised. An Army officer assigned to the Bundesnachrichtendienst, he had interrogated many Soviet agents. "Do you think they punish the family of every spy we catch? Soon no one would ever come here to spy on us at all." Weber allowed his voice to soften. The drugs were beginning to take effect, and as the stranger's mind became hazy he would be gentle, cajoling the information from him. The funny part, he mused, was that he'd been instructed on how to do this by a psychiatrist. Despite the many movies about brutal German interrogators, he hadn't had the least training in a forceful extraction of information. Too bad, he thought. If there was ever a time I need it, it is now. Most of the colonel's family lived outside Kulmbach, only a few kilometers from the border.

Why Bush stopped flying remains a mystery

By Dave Moniz and Jim Drinkard, USA TODAY

Failed to retake physical

Then something happened.

In the spring of 1972, Bush's records show he stopped showing up for drills at his unit in Texas at about the time he requested a transfer to an Alabama Air National Guard unit. Military records indicate he requested the transfer so he could work for the political campaign of Winton "Red" Blount, a Republican candidate for the Senate and a friend of Bush's father.

Bush's last flight physical, taken in 1971, expired on July 6, 1972. He did not renew it, as required of all military pilots, which is noted in his National Guard records. He was suspended from flying in August for missing the exam.

Dan Rather got it right George W. Bush DID go AWOL

byLefty Coaster

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. Bush less than stellar military career in the Texas Air National Guard. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.

That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%.

I started thinking this morning about a jacket I used to wear long ago. I bought it around the time Lynn and I started bicycling, which I think was in 1999. I wore that jacket every time I went cycling and some parts of it were green and other parts blue. I remember one time, after I had been wearing it for a long time, I noticed that the logo emblem on one side of the chest was labeled as “Brooks.” I can remember feeling something like surprise that it was labeled “Brooks.”

Stargate Atlantis - Rising - television series premiere episode part 1 and 2 - Friday 16 July 2004 (DVD extended version)

Episode Summary

The discovery of an outpost, left behind by the Ancients in the most unlikely of places, leads a new Stargate team to the distant Pegasus galaxy. Once there, they discover a planet of humans being decimated by a terrible alien race know as the Wraith.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

SHEPPARD: Did I do that?

LATER. O'Neill is walking through the outpost with Weir.

Dr. Elizabeth WEIR: We could be on our way to discovering an entirely new Ancient civilisation. At the best case scenario, we meet actual Ancients who are willing to help us, but if we don't ... (She trails off as she realises that O'Neill isn't paying attention to her.) General, we need him.

US Air Force brigadier general Jack O'NEILL: Sorry, Doc. I need Daniel here.

WEIR: I'm talking about Major Sheppard.

O'NEILL: Oh. Don't you have a dozen or so people already who can use the Ancient technology?

WEIR: Yeah, with concentration and training they can make it work, but John Sheppard, he does it naturally.

O'NEILL: You know, I checked into his record.

WEIR: I know about the whole supposed black mark in Afghanistan. He was trying to save the lives of three servicemen.

O'NEILL: Disobeying a direct order in the process.

WEIR (smiling): I have read your own file, General. Please.

O'NEILL: Right. (He glances at her uncomfortably, blowing out a breath.) OK. It's your expedition. (He boards the elevator.) You want him, you ask him.

WEIR: That's the thing. I have.

(O'Neill turns and looks at her.)

O'NEILL: Really?

HELICOPTER. Sheppard is going through his pre-flight checks. O'Neill sits beside him.

O'NEILL: This isn't a long trip, so I'll be as succinct as possible.

(Sheppard continues with his checks, then looks round at O'Neill as he says nothing further, just looks at him.)

SHEPPARD: Well, that's pretty succinct.

O'NEILL: Thank you.

SHEPPARD: I told Doctor Weir that ... I'd think about it.

O'NEILL: And? So? Well? What?!

(The helicopter's engines start to fire up.)

SHEPPARD: All due respect, sir, we were just attacked by an alien missile. Then I found out I have some mutant gene. Then there's this Stargate thing and these expeditions to other galaxies.

O'NEILL: You know, this isn't about you, Sheppard. It's a lot bigger than that.

SHEPPARD: Right now, at this very second, whether I decide to go on this mission or not seems to be about me. (He puts his helmet on.)

O'NEILL: Let me ask you something. (He realises that Sheppard can't hear him, so takes down a headset, puts it on and speaks into the microphone.) Why d'you become a pilot?

SHEPPARD: I think people who don't want to fly are crazy.

O'NEILL: And I think people who don't want to go through the Stargate are equally as whacked. Now if you can't give me a yes by the time we reach McMurdo, I don't even want you.

Mannix (TV Series)

A Word Called Courage (1975)

Quotes

Quint: Forgive me for not introducing myself, Mr. Mannix. The young lady is my daughter-in-law. Unhappily... she became a widow when my son was involved in a misunderstanding at the Mexican border. Look at this room, Mr. Mannix. It doesn't look like a... laboratory, does it? Nevertheless, that's what it is.

Joe Mannix: A laboratory for what?

Quint: For extracting information. In our business, information is important. You know, the human nervous system is very interesting, Mr. Mannix. It operates on two simple principles: pain and pleasure. Prolonging either... can destroy a man.

Joe Mannix: I don't have any information you need.

Quint: You have a name. A name that's necessary to me, and my organization.

Joe Mannix: Why?

Quint: Because it is the name of an informer, a spy in my employ. You see, Mr. Mannix, I deal in a commodity, the use of which is frowned upon by law enforcement agencies. And recently, this informer has aborted several of my import operations at a cost to me of millions of dollars. Now, I know... you know the informer's name. I made you a reasonable offer, you refused. Now... you give me no choice... except for my laboratory. Unless, of course you... change your mind. The 25,000 is still there for you to accept.

Joe Mannix: No, thanks.

Quint: Take off your tie.

[Mannix takes off his tie and hands it to one of Quint's henchman]

Quint: And your jacket.

[Joe takes off his jacket]

Quint: We'll see how stubborn you are under pressure.

Enemy at the Gates (2001)

Quotes

Nikita Khrushchev: [addressing a roomful of Soviet political officers] My name... is Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev. I've come to take things in hand here. This city... is not Kursk, nor is it Kiev, nor Minsk. This city... is Stalingrad. *Stalingrad*! This city bears the name of the Boss. It's more than a city, it's a symbol. If the Germans... capture this city... the entire country will collapse. Now... I want our boys to raise their heads. I want them to act like they have *balls*! I want them to stop shitting their pants! That's your job. As political officers... I'm counting on you.

[he looks at one man]

Nikita Khrushchev: You. What's your suggestion?

Sweating Officer: [visibly nervous] Sh-shoot all the other generals who have retreated, and their chiefs of staff, too.

Stammering Officer: [Khrushchev moves down the line to another man] M-m-m-make some examples. D-d-d-d-d-d-deport the families of the d-d-d-deserters -

Nikita Khrushchev: [turning away] Yes, that's all been done.

Danilov: [from the back of the room] Give them hope!

[Khrushchev turns around and strides down the line to Danilov]

Danilov: Here, the men's only choice is between German bullets and ours. But there's another way. The way of courage. The way of love of the Motherland. We must publish the army newspaper again. We must tell magnificent stories, stories that extol sacrifice, bravery. We must make them believe in the victory. We must give them hope, pride, a desire to fight. Yes... we need to make examples. But examples to *follow*. What we need...

[he glances quickly at Khrushchev]

Danilov: ... are heroes.

Nikita Khrushchev: [Khrushchev looks around, then leans in closer to Danilov] Do you know any heroes around here?

Danilov: Yes, comrade. I know one.
