Stargate SG-1

"The Nox"

TV-series season 1 episode 8, 09/12/1997

(from internet transcript)

Dr. Daniel Jackson: I guess what I'm saying is, we could learn a lot from you, I really wish that we could be friends with the Nox. Friends share knowledge with each other.

OPHER
Yes, you have much to learn.

[Opher motions for Daniel to follow, which he does.]

DANIEL
Well, why…why don't you teach me now? For example, you seem to have an almost psychic ability. Are you born with it?

OPHER
Knowledge takes time. Over the years we teach the young to be wise.

DANIEL
Um…

OPHER
How old am I? How do you mark time?

DANIEL
Umm…years, days? Ah, a day is one revolution of our planet; a year is one revolution around our sun. There are 365 days in one year so…

OPHER
(thoughtfullly)
Then, I am four hundred and thirty-two years old.

[Opher turns to Daniel, who is staring at him.]

DANIEL
Well, ah…You look great.

OPHER
Thank you.

Olney, Maryland

From Wikipedia

Olney is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is located in the north central part of the county, thirteen miles (21 km) north of Washington, D.C.

Olney served as the original headquarters of the Emergency Management Institute, founded in 1951 as the Civil Defense Staff College (CDSC) to provide training for civil defense. While there, the college built "Rescue Street," a training center designed to resemble atomic bomb ruins.

In popular culture

Olney appears in the 2008 videogame Fallout 3, where it is referred to as Old Olney and depicted as a rundown, derelict town.

Stargate SG-1

"The Nox"

TV-series season 1 episode 8, 09/12/1997

(from internet transcript)

CARTER
Hey! What are you looking at?

DANIEL
I felt that blast kill me. I mean…I thought I…I thought we were dead. Weren't we dead?

CARTER
(pushing herself up)
Yeah.

DANIEL
Okay. Well I thought heaven would be a little more upscale.

CARTER
Oh, I don't think this is heaven.

[Carter gets up and they both walk across the hut to O'Neill, who is lying on his stomach. There is a hole in the back of his uniform, but the skin underneath is unmarked. Carter feels his skin where the wound was while Daniel pats his hair.]

DANIEL
Jack?

[Daniel places his hand on O'Neill's head. O'Neill jumps up.]

O'NEILL
What? God.

DANIEL
It's okay.

O'NEILL
What the hell was that?

DANIEL
It's okay.

[O'Neill feels his back, confusion crossing his face.]

O'NEILL
Wasn't I just…

CARTER
Killed.

O'NEILL
Killed as in…

CARTER
Dead.

O'NEILL
Dead.

CARTER
Yeah. We know we saw it happen. Same thing happened to us.

O'NEILL
Oh. This is a surprise then.

DANIEL
I don't know what happened to Teal'c.

CARTER
Colonel, my sidearm's gone.

O'NEILL
So's mine.

[A small man, Opher, with greenish, bushy hair, clad in baggy clothing of what looks like homespun, natural fibers walks into the hut.]

DANIEL
Ah…hello.

DANIEL
Hi. I'm Daniel…uh, Jackson. This is Captain Carter and this is…uh…

O'NEILL
Colonel Jack O'Neill, SG-1. Um…Sorry to drop in on you like this but we were…dead.

CARTER
Do you know where our friend is?
(motions to her uniform)
Another like us.

[Lya motions for them to follow her, then walks out of the hut. Opher smiles and follows. O'Neill, Daniel and Carter look at each other then follow.]

EXT—PLANET—DAY

[The hut they exit is small and round, set in a clearing in the middle of the forest. There are two smaller huts behind it. They all seem to be constructed of sticks and grass.]

DANIEL
Is this your village?

DANIEL
Opher is 432 years old.

O'NEILL
Well, guess what? They're not human.

DANIEL
No. Ah…humanoid, but definitely more advanced than anything that has evolved on Earth.

O'NEILL
That creature that we came here for? It has no power at all. None. Zip.

CARTER
Well then, how does it become invisible?

[O'Neill looks over his shoulder at the Nox.]

O'NEILL
They do it. The Nox hide it from us.

DANIEL
They make it invisible to protect it?

CARTER
Well, this makes things even worse.

DANIEL
If Apophis finds out that it's them that has this power…

TEAL'C
He will try to possess it. If he finds he cannot, he will bombard this planet's surface from high above. What he cannot possess, he destroys.

O'NEILL
Why didn't he tell us about this before?

DANIEL
I think, in their way, they did.

[The city vanishes.]

TEAL'C
It appears they possess a form of technology far greater than that of the Goa'uld.

CARTER
They looked so helpless…

DANIEL
And now they're going to bury the Stargate, and we can never come back. We should've listened.

O'NEILL
'The very young do not always do as they're told.'

[Daniel, Teal'c and Carter stare at O'Neill.]

O'NEILL
Just a little something the Nox told me one time. Something worth taking home.

The American Presidency Project

William J. Clinton

42nd President of the United States: 1993 ‐ 2001

Remarks at Brooke Grove Elementary School in Olney, Maryland

September 07, 1999

Thank you so much. You know, when I was in grade school, we used to joke that our favorite class was assembly. [Laughter] But you've been out here so long, and it's so hot, I'm not sure it's true anymore. [Laughter] I will try to be brief.

I want to, first of all, say how greatly honored I am to be here with Governor Glendening and Senator Sarbanes and Congressman Cardin and your Representative, Congresswoman Morella; with Senator Miller and the other members of the Maryland legislature; with your principal, Eoline Cary; Jerry Weast, the Montgomery County superintendent. I want to thank the teachers in the classes whom I visited, Ms. Tepper and Ms. Husted, and their students, who asked good questions and got me to read a book, a book about friendship, which I could use a little of myself from time to time. [Laughter] I want to thank the teachers, the parents, and the students. And I want to thank Nancy Grasmick, and Reggie Felton, the chair of the Montgomery County School Board, and all the people in Maryland for their dedication. And I thank you, Robin Davis, for your introduction and for your devotion to teaching. And we have also on the stage with us Jessica Goldstein, who is another one of the reading specialists, also hired under our program.

Most of all, if I might, I'd like to say a special word of thanks to my friend of over 20 years, the Secretary of Education, Dick Riley. I think, plainly, the finest Education Secretary this country has ever had. And I really thank him for his leadership.

I knew before I came here that this was a blue ribbon school. Now that I've been here, I know why. I loved walking down the halls; I loved reading the posters on the walls; I loved talking to the students and watching the instruction. Education is the priority in this school. Education must be America's priority, as well.

We now have in our schools, starting last year for the first time since the end of World War II, we've got a group of students in our schools bigger than the baby boom generation, the largest number of children ever in the schools of the United States, and as all of you know, it's also the most diverse group of students ever, racially, religiously, culturally. We have the largest number of students in our schools whose first language is not English, by far in the history of the country. And yet, we know that in a global society our diversity can be an enormous asset if, but only if, we can give every one of our children a world-class education. And we don't have a moment to lose.

I'm here because for 6 1/2 years we have worked very hard to raise standards, to raise expectations, to raise accountability, and to raise the level of support so that every child in America could have an education like the children of Brooke Grove Elementary get. And I think that's what all of you want.

Bill Clinton's Draft Letter

GOV CLINTON (November 23, 1991)

Bill Clinton's Draft Letter: On December 3rd, 1969, Bill Clinton, then in his second year as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England, wrote a letter to Colonel Eugene Holmes, who headed up the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Arkansas. Here is the full text of the letter.

"Dear Colonel Holmes,

I am sorry to be so long in writing. I know I promised to let you hear from me at least once a month, and from now on you will, but I have had to have some time to think about this first letter. Almost daily since my return to England I have thought about writing, about what I want to and ought to say. First, I want to thank you, not just for saving me from the draft, but for being so kind and decent to me last summer, when I was as low as I have ever been. One thing which made the bond we struck in good faith somewhat palatable to me was my high regard for you personally. In retrospect, it seems that the admiration might not have been mutual had you known a little more about me, about my political beliefs and activities. At least you might have thought me more fit for the draft than for ROTC. Let me try to explain.

Stargate SG-1 Season 2 Episode 15

The Fifth Race

NOTES

This episode marks the first direct reference to the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates, on the series. The Ancients created the Stargate system and were in an alliance of four great races: the Nox, the Furlings, the Asgard, and the Ancients. They once resided in the galaxy of Ida, (where the Asgard live), and our galaxy but moved on from these regions of space leaving an archive of their knowledge, The Place of Our Legacy, on P3R-272.
