At the very vague start of the dream that I think I woke up from earlier today I think, as I have been trying to remember today, that Bill Clinton gave me an assignment that had something to do with trees and so with a certain sense of confidence I was standing next to a treeline and I knew that I could determine the height of the trees, which were soaring above me, by measuring the length of the shadow on the ground. There was another dream sequence before that of which writing the last sentence made me think of but I cannot now remember that earlier dream sequence although I might remember it later. One problem I noted with my activity to determine the height of the trees, which all seemed generally the same height, was that the shadow of the tree I was going to measure stretched across a busy highway or major roadway. There were not a lot of cars going past at the time but there were just enough that I would not have time to keep the tape measure from
being run over by a car and I did not want that to happen. I worked at it for a while and then I was on the other side of the road and I am not certain if I did get the shadow measured correctly. There are other scenes on that other side of the road and then I noticed that I had lost track of the shadow. I seemed to be too far down the dirt road I had been working on and I had been looking at the road and there were ruts in the road and standing water and I remember that I was stretching the tape measure and I was concerned about something and that concern might have been about snakes but I never did see anything.

After I noticed that I had lost track of the shadow there are some other details I notice around then but I am not clear on what happened next. I should have walked back the way I came but I seemed to travel through the woods in a direction of travel perpendicular to where I had been. None of the surroundings are specifically familiar but at the end of the dream I knew where I was. I seemed to have walked through the woods and I walked back out to that paved road again, which I seemed to have traveled parallel to while traveling from east to west, and I was standing there looking back towards the north-east and I was looking at that office complex building

"You may proceed, Comrade Colonel," Alekseyev said over his radio circuit. He didn't say, Make a fool of me now and you will be counting trees! The General stood on a hill five hundred meters west of the regimental command post. With him was his aide, and Politburo member Mikhail Sergetov. As if I need that distraction, the General thought bleakly.
First the guns. They saw the flashes long before they heard the rolling thunder of the reports. Fired from behind another hill three kilometers away, the shells arced through the sky to their left, cutting through the air with a sound like the ripping of linen. The Party man cringed at the noise, Alekseyev noted, another soft civilian -
"I never did like that sound," Sergetov said shortly.
"Heard it before, Comrade Minister?" the General asked solicitously.
"I served my four years in a motor-rifle regiment," he replied.
"And I never learned to trust my comrades at the artillery plotting tables. Foolish, I know. Excuse me, General."
Next came the tank guns. They watched through binoculars as the big main battle tanks emerged from the woods like something from a nightmare, their long cannon belching flame as they glided across the rolling ground of the exercise area. Interspersed with the tanks were the infantry fighting vehicles. Then came the armed helicopters, swooping at the objective from left and right, firing their guided missiles at the mockups of bunkers and armored vehicles.
By this time the hilltop objective was nearly hidden by explosions and flying dirt as the artillery fire marched back and forth across it. Alekseyev's trained eye evaluated the exercise closely. Anyone on that hilltop would be having a very hard time. Even in a small, deep, protective hole, even in a defiladed tank, that artillery fire would be terrifying, enough to distract the guided-weapons crews, enough to rattle communications men, perhaps enough to impede the officers there. Perhaps.

There was that dream I had the other night, where I was inside a missile. I remembered today the similarity with this movie, in that Cochrane converted an ICBM into his warp ship. But why would someone create a connection between me and Cochrane? I didn't create warp drive in the past only to have someone block my memory of that, did I? It's funny, when I read something the other day about Data arguing with Einstein, it reminded me of something I was writing in my journal back in the early '90s. I was wondering why it was impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. A couple years ago I was writing about it again. The idea presented itself to me about why it was impossible, something about atoms not being able to work because electrons could not transfer energy faster than the speed of light. I wondered if it was possible to create some kind of process to transfer energy to those atoms, not unlike a cell's mitochondria works. Today I have been
wondering if anything I remember about the past is real. Do I have a different past? Am I really who I think I am? The stuff I imagine happening to me sometimes, did that stuff really happen? I wonder if these movies and tv shows have actually been sort of inoculations, to keep me from questioning my reality. I do question reality sometimes, but it wasn't until I saw that Matrix movie a while back, did I really start to wonder about reality. But it didn't seem to matter, I wasn't overly concerned that I may be living that kind of false reality. I still don't think I am living such an extreme unreality as in the Matrix, but I wonder if there is a divergence point in my life, a shadow, a distorted period. Or have I been living a life like in the movie Soldier, or maybe like in Blade Runner, where Rachael, and I assume Harrison Ford's character, have false memories of their life. Am I Harrison Ford's character in this reality? A replicant searching for
replicants? I haven't been able to follow Battlestar Galactica this past year, but I think that theme is showing up there, with Chief Tyrol.
