NASA CRAFT SLAMS INTO UTAH DESERT / Scientists rush to salvage Genesis' solar samples after its parachutes fail

Parachute problems forced NASA's Genesis spacecraft to slam into the Utah desert Wednesday and may have ruined an expensive and delicate attempt to study the origins of the solar system.
Three years after it was launched, the 420-pound capsule and its cargo of tiny solar particles augered into the ground after parachutes designed to slow the plummeting probe failed to open.
NASA had hoped to preserve the fragile grains of sun by using Hollywood stunt pilots in helicopters to snatch the capsule above the U.S. Army Dugway Proving ground southwest of Salt Lake City.
While research teams scrambled to see whether something could be salvaged from the $264 million mission, NASA initiated an investigation that could have far-reaching implications for robotic planetary missions either under way or on the drawing board.
The crash also delivered another setback for NASA as it seeks increased funding to recover from last year's Columbia shuttle disaster and plot new missions, including President Bush's moon and Mars initiative. Hurricane damage at Kennedy Space Center in Florida this week could affect NASA's attempt to resume shuttle launches in the spring.
"This is a difficult moment for me right now," said NASA's Don Sweetnam, the Genesis project manager from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "There were a lot of things that had to happen in series, and we got just about all of them done. We just didn't get the last two or three."
Scientists hoped the solar materials Genesis collected - equivalent in mass to a few grains of salt - would provide new clues about the chemistry of the dust and gas that formed the solar system 4.5 billion years ago. The particles were to be stored at NASA's Johnson Space Center in the same facility that houses the lunar rocks and soil gathered by the Apollo astronauts.
But Genesis bored into a small crater Wednesday morning when it struck the desert floor at 193 mph. As engineers rushed to the crash site, they discovered that explosives designed to release two parachutes had not discharged.
Possible failures include a mechanism that was supposed to release the parachutes, the electrical system that discharges the explosives or the battery, said Bob Corwin of Lockheed Martin, chief of the Genesis recovery-operations team.
Military radar and tracking equipment were the first to detect a problem, alerting the recovery team. Witnesses said the impact cracked the capsule and a smaller internal container, exposing the solar cargo to unwanted contamination from the desert air.
"It was actually quite surprising how little damage there was considering the velocity with which it struck," said Roy Haggard, who directed the helicopter retrieval effort.
"We are sorry we did not get to perform the midair retrieval, but our hearts go out to the science team."
Observers withheld judgment on NASA's performance, noting the agency's success in landing the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on Mars in January. If NASA focuses on finding the causes of the Genesis crash, it could improve the prospects for success of future robotic missions intended to retrieve samples of Martian soil, asteroids and comets, experts added.
"We can't take it lightly," said Louis Friedman, a scientist and executive director of The Planetary Society, a Pasadena, Calif.-based organization that promotes exploration. "Sample return is complex. Missions like these involve thousands and thousands of things that go right, and then one goes wrong. That is a pretty good batting average in every game except this one."
Genesis marked NASA's first attempt to bring extraterrestrial materials back to Earth since Apollo 17.
In January, NASA's Stardust probe swept through the heart of the comet Wild 2, collecting particles of ice and dust. The small spacecraft, which shares much of the Genesis re-entry design, is headed for a Jan. 15, 2006, landing in Utah.
The Genesis accident adds to an already difficult week for the NASA, which sustained significant damage to crucial shuttle program facilities at the Kennedy Space Center from Hurricane Frances during the Labor Day weekend. The storm will add delays and expense to NASA's efforts to recover from last year's loss of the shuttle Columbia and its crew.
Before details of the Genesis crash unfolded, NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe met with senators in Washington to defend billion-dollar budget requests and answer questions about the future of the space program. It's uncertain what impact the Genesis crash will have on lawmakers already skeptical about the space program.
Genesis was launched on Aug. 8, 2001, on a path that would take it about a million miles away. The locale was ideal for the spacecraft to unfurl a series of plates that trapped microscopic particles streaming from the sun's outer atmosphere. The collections were complete in April, and Genesis began its journey back to Earth.

Yesterday was some kind of foreign dream that was more of an emotion than a visualization. I couldn't remember any of the details although I felt like I had been seeing details. All I remembered was feeling like it was something intense, there was some intensity to the communication, almost overwhelming like a very strong and clear signal on a radio. After I woke up, I could only characterize the message as positive.
Today the first foreign dream wasn't too clear either. It had something to do with me, someother characters, and something about the stars. We were under the stars, or we were talking to the stars. I can visualize the sky with the stars but they may have also been a metaphor for people. Then I left somewhere and there was something about a goose, not sure what that meant, maybe something to do with staying meant something about a cooked goose.
The second foreign dream had a lot of detail. I was sitting on a bus with someone that I knew but I don't know who it was. It may have been Britney Spears but that makes no sense. I was sitting next to her and she was someone that I had lived with before, someone I had a relationship with, like a girlfriend. I was getting off the bus to a place I was staying that I don't recognize from anyplace I've been in real life. She asked me if I was really staying there, she may have commented that it was amazing I was staying there, or someone else said that. Apparently, it was the same place she and I had lived during our relationship. It was some kind of little travel trailer. A young woman was letting me stay there. I was taking up a little open seat or bench in a hallway of the trailer. I had a little storage bin to put my stuff in.

Catching a Ride to Destiny
The sight of the Astrovan's shiny silver exterior and bold NASA emblem evokes pride and excitement in those who watch it wind its way toward the launch pad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Before each space shuttle launch, astronauts smile and wave as they board the van that will carry them to meet their fully fueled ride to space.
Since 1984, each shuttle crew has travelled those nine miles, from their crew quarters to the launch pad, aboard the same vehicle. A modified Airstream motor home, the "Astrovan" as it is called has only racked up 24,000 miles in its 24 years of service. That's because it's used solely to transport the astronauts on three occasions: to the launch pad for launch dress rehearsal, on launch day and after landing.
The earlier shuttle flights had fewer crew members, so they used the Apollo-era astronaut transport van that now can be seen by tourists at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's Apollo/Saturn V Center.
