USS Ticonderoga (DDG/CG-47), fifth to bear the name, was a guided-missile cruiser in the service of the United States Navy. Homeported in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the "Tico" was the lead ship of her class.
Ticonderoga was the first combatant ship to feature the Aegis combat system (a limited version of the system had been tested in Norton Sound). This allows the ship to track and engage multiple targets (aircraft) much more effectively than any ship previously.

There were these green coveralls I used to wear on the Taylor. I hated them. They were ill-fitting and uncomfortable. I hoped to get some of the better fitting ones, like the helo crew wore.
This struck my mind almost like a gentle slap: The similarities are to the movie Top Gun and Cast Away. My step-brother, Micheal, died the night of November 25, 1986. He had just dropped me off at our parents house and was driving back to his place. A few miles away, his ran off the road and his truck spun around so violently, it threw him across the cab and he hit his head on the passenger door. I blamed myself about that for a long time. That was right before I went to Dam Neck and it was a very gloomy time for me. I remember thinking that if I had been in the truck at the time, his head wouldn't have hit the door because he would have been thrown into me. I also have this memory which I used to think about a lot. We were going out to run around and for every day before that, I had been driving up to his place and he would usually drive from there. But this night, he told me to ride with him, which meant that he wouldn't have died if I had driven as
usual that night because he wouldn't have even been on that road. I haven't had a dream about him in a long time, but they used to vary between him being awake in the dream with him sometimes being asleep. I was writing about more details about him a while back, but that is kind of cloudy now.

Space Shuttle thermal protection system
The Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) is the barrier that protects the Space Shuttle Orbiter during the searing 1650 °C (3000 °F) heat of atmospheric reentry. A secondary goal is to protect from the heat and cold of space while on orbit. The TPS covers essentially the entire orbiter surface, and consists of seven different materials in varying locations based on amount of required heat protection
The TPS is a system of different protection types, not just silica tiles. They are in two basic categories: tile TPS and non-tile TPS. The main selection criteria is using the lightest weight protection capable of handling the heat in a given area. However in some cases a heavier type is used if additional impact resistance is needed. The AFRSI blankets were primarily adopted because of reduced maintenance, not thermal or weight reasons.
Much of the shuttle is covered with silica tiles, made from essentially very pure quartz sand. The insulation prevents heat transfer to the underlying orbiter aluminum skin and structure. These tiles are such poor heat conductors that one can hold one while it is still red hot. There are about 31,000 unique tiles individually fitted on the vehicle, for which the Orbiter has been called "the flying brickyard".

STS-75 was a United States Space Shuttle mission, the 19th mission of the Columbia orbiter.
The primary objective of STS-75 was to carry the Tethered Satellite System Reflight (TSS-1R) into orbit and to deploy it spaceward on a conducting tether. The mission also flew the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-3) designed to investigate materials science and condensed matter physics.
The TSS-1R mission was a reflight of TSS-1 which was flown onboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-46 in July/August 1992. The Tether Satellite System circled the Earth at an altitude of 296 kilometers, placing the tether system within the rarefied electrically charged layer of the atmosphere known as the ionosphere.
STS-75 mission scientist hoped to deploy the tether to a distance of 20.7 km (12.9 mi). Over 19 kilometers of the tether were deployed before the tether broke. It remained in orbit for a number of weeks and was easily visible from the ground, appearing something like a small but surprisingly bright fluorescent light traveling through the sky.

County Councilman McKenna to run for attorney general

At Monza, King Umberto I of Italy was assassinated by anarchist Gaetano Bresci, a resident of Paterson, New Jersey. The King had attended an awards ceremony at a gymnastics competition, and was preparing to leave at 10:00 p.m., when Bresci shot him three times. Umberto's son Victor Emmanuel III, the Prince of Naples, succeeded him. Back in the Paterson, where Mrs. Bresci still lived, Mayor John Hinchcliffe reassured the press that the city's 104 policemen were keeping an eye on possible terrorism. "There is one thing I want to say, and that is the plot to kill King Humbert was not hatched in New Jersey," said Governor Foster M. Voorhees, adding, "I am sure it was made up in New York if plotted in this country at all." Legend has it that King Umberto met his exact double the day before at a restaurant, and that the man died earlier in the day "of a shooting accident".

President William McKinley is shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley was greeting the crowd in the Temple of Music when Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, stepped forward and shot the president twice at point-blank range. McKinley lived for another week before finally succumbing to a gangrene infection on September 14.
At the time of the shooting, President McKinley was very popular and America was in the midst of a period of peace and prosperity. Czolgosz, a laborer from Cleveland who fell under the sway of charismatic leaders of anarchy such as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, became particularly obsessed with Gaetano Bresci, an anarchist who shot and killed King Humbert I of Italy on July 29, 1900. Czolgosz decided to kill McKinley to further the anarchist cause.
While Presidents Lincoln and Garfield had been completely unprotected at the time of their assassinations, the newly formed Secret Service was now available to protect President McKinley. But when Czolgosz stepped up to shake McKinley's hand with a handkerchief covering the .32 revolver in his hand, the agents thought nothing of it.
After the shots were fired, the agents grabbed Czolgosz and began pummeling him, but McKinley warned, "Be easy with him, boys," as he was helped to an ambulance. The president then told his secretary to be careful in telling the First Lady what happened. Working in a building with no electricity, surgeons operated on the president, who seemed to be recovering at first. Legend has it that his recovery diet was raw eggs and whiskey. Before lapsing into a coma and dying, McKinley's last words were: "It is God's way. His will, not ours, be done."
McKinley's assassination led to reprisals against his critics across the country. Those who had spoken poorly of the president were tarred and feathered. Emma Goldman was even arrested for allegedly inspiring the murder. But Czolgosz took full and sole responsibility for the assassination and was sent to the electric chair less than two months later. On October 29, his last words were: "I am not sorry for my crime."

Italian American assassinates Italian king
In Monza, Italy, King Umberto I is shot to death by Gaetano Bresci, an Italian-born anarchist who resided in America before returning to his homeland to murder the king.
Crowned in 1878, King Umberto became increasingly authoritarian in the late 19th century. He enacted a program of suppression against the radical elements in Italian society, particularly members of the popular anarchist movements.
Gaetano Bresci, who was born into poverty in Tuscany, immigrated to America in the 1890s seeking a better life. Bresci settled with his family in Paterson, New Jersey, and was employed in a weaving mill. The city was a hotbed of Italian American radicalism at the time, and Bresci became a cofounder of an anarchist newspaper, La Questione Sociale. Sacrificing his free time and scarce extra money to the paper, Bresci was regarded by his political allies as a devoted anarchist. He never forgot his countrymen back in Italy, and he read with horror of the events that unfolded in 1898.
The crops were poor that year, and much of the peasantry was starving. Seeking a respite from their government, peasants and workers marched to Milan to petition the king for relief. King Umberto ordered the demonstrators to disperse, and when they did not, he ordered the Italian army under General Bava Beccaris to force them out of Milan. Beccaris' soldiers fired cannons and numerous rounds into the crowd, and hundreds were killed. When Umberto then decorated Beccaris for the military action, Bresci resolved that the king should die.
Taking money from the newspaper without explaining to his compatriots why, Bresci traveled to Italy and in July 1900 finally got close to the king, who was making a royal visit to Milan. Umberto had already survived two attempts on his life, but on July 29, 1900, Bresci hit his mark, felling the king with three bullets. Bresci was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to a life of hard labor at Santo Stefano Prison on Ventotene Island.

I remembered again today that I rarely get sick. I do get sick, cold, flu, etc., but only if I am around sick people that infect me. I have gone out and beat myself into the ground to the point of hypothermia and still didn't sick. This reminds me of that movie Unbreakable where he talks about not getting sick. I have started thinking that when people cough around me, especially in my direction, they are trying to infect me. Either because they were put up to it, or just because they are malicious. I've noticed that some people just enjoy tearing down stuff that other people created. Some people enjoy creating, other people, defective humans, just enjoy destroying other people's creations.
They have been driving, or herding, me for a long time.
I had a slight cold shortly after moving onto this floor, but other than that, I haven't been sick a single day since leaving Microsoft, even after using these nasty-ass computers here on this floor. I worry people are going to increase their efforts to make me sick though simply because they know I worry about it.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Twenty-seven Invitros... died at Port Riskin. The official statement on the incident was, uh, faulty wiring and a jammed bunker door. The natural born sergeant was never disciplined for his actions. I was brought up on charges for striking my squad leader. It started out as a court-martial trial which for InVitros back then, if convicted, meant death by lethal injection. But the Old Man must have had a spark of conscience. Because I only ended up with 120 days in solitary. They say InVitros - Tanks - are disloyal, lazy, and, uh, unable to dream. The soldiers who were lost in that bunker gave their lives loyally for this country. As for dreaming I hear the cries of those soldiers - I see their faces screaming for help, begging for their lives every night in my sleep. But, uh, I wouldn't call it dreams.

Our Nation also owes its appreciation to Admiral Harold Gehman, Jr. (retired) as well as the other 12 members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. As Board Chair, Admiral Gehman and his team have worked tirelessly over the past seven months conducting an exhaustive review of the circumstances surrounding this accident. The next steps for NASA under Sean O'Keefe's leadership must be determined after a thorough review of the entire report, including its recommendations.

Today the Columbia Accident Investigation Board released its report on the tragic accident that claimed the lives of seven brave astronauts. These men and women assumed great risk in service to all humanity. On behalf of a grateful Nation, I once again recognize their sacrifices and those of their loved ones. Their service will never be forgotten.
Our Nation also owes its appreciation to Admiral Harold Gehman, Jr. (retired) as well as the other 12 members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. As Board Chair, Admiral Gehman and his team have worked tirelessly over the past seven months conducting an exhaustive review of the circumstances surrounding this accident. The next steps for NASA under Sean O'Keefe's leadership must be determined after a thorough review of the entire report, including its recommendations.
Our journey into space will go on.
