And may I simply say that Barbara and I join with you and with all the Nation in mourning the loss of Nan Rehnquist, the wife of the Chief Justice.
Let me also welcome the many Members of the United States Congress that are with us today. Single out but a few: Minority Leader Dole and Chairman Biden and ranking member Thurmond of the committee, and so many others; members of our Cabinet over here and so many friends of Clarence Thomas, who have worked with him here in Washington. And, of course, I should especially single out Senator Jack Danforth, a man every American would be proud to call friend.
And of course, those special guests, the many members of Clarence Thomas' family here today: his wife, Ginnie, son Jamal here in the front row, and Clarence's mother, Mrs. Leola Williams; his sister, Emma Mae Martin; his brother, Myers. His cousins, it reminds me of Pinafore, his cousins, sisters, aunts. [Laughter] But that's the way it ought to be. And all of you, some of whom drove all the way up, I see a little advertisement over here from Pin Point, Georgia, to be here this afternoon. That's 600 long miles, but I've got a feeling they might have driven 6,000 miles to be here today.

On the night of 27 February 1933, the Reichstag building was set afire, and the Dutch council communist Marinus van der Lubbe was found inside; he was arrested, charged with arson, tried, and then decapitated. The fire immediately provoked the response of thousands of anarchists, socialists, and communists throughout the Reich; describing said free-speech exercises as insurrection, the Nazis imprisoned many to Dachau concentration camp. The public worried that the fire had been a signal meant to initiate communist revolution in Germany, as in 1919, so the Nazis exploited the arson with the Reichstag Fire Decree (27 February 1933), rescinding most German civil liberties, including habeas corpus, to so suppress their opponents.

State and party ownership of print, television and radio media served as an important manner in which to control information and society in light of Eastern Bloc leaderships viewing even marginal groups of opposition intellectuals as a potential threat to the bases underlying Communist power therein.
In the Eastern Bloc, the state owned and operated the means of mass communication. The ruling authorities viewed media as a propaganda tool, and widely practiced censorship to exercise almost full control over the information dissemination. The press in Communist countries was an organ of, and completely reliant on, the state. Until the late 1980s, all Eastern Bloc radio and television organizations were state-owned (and tightly controlled), while print media was usually owned by political organizations, mostly by the local Communist party.

Corporals killings
The corporals killings is the name commonly given to the deaths of corporals David Robert Howes (23) and Derek Tony Wood (24), two British Army soldiers of the Royal Corps of Signals killed on 19 March 1988 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The non-uniformed soldiers were killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), after they drove into the funeral procession of an IRA volunteer.
The soldiers were then dragged from their vehicle, driven to nearby waste ground, stripped and shot dead.
Because it was fully captured by television cameras, the incident has been described as one of the "most dramatic and harrowing images" of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

I. FACTUAL AND PROCEDURAL HISTORY
The respondent, a native of the United Kingdom and citizen of Ireland, was convicted in 1990 in Northern Ireland of aiding and abetting the murders of two British corporals in 1988, causing grievous bodily harm, and false imprisonment. 1 The conviction, rendered by a court that had been established to try political-type crimes in Northern Ireland (the Diplock Courts, which were conducted without a jury), arose out of the events of March 19, 1988, when the two British corporals were killed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The incident occurred during the funeral of another murder victim, who had himself been killed by a loyalist gunman at an Irish Republican Army (“IRA”) funeral.
According to the trial court’s written decision, 2 a car being driven by the British corporals had approached the funeral cortege after a number of marshals had tried to wave the driver down. The driver then attempted to pass the procession by mounting a footpath at the side of the road. When blocked by the cortege and its crowds, the vehicle attempted to escape by turning into a service road but then reversed at a fairly fast speed. By then the car had attracted the attention of some of those in the crowd, and several vehicles blocked its exit. A group of youths attacked the car and, after breaking the windows, pulled the occupants out of the vehicle. There was a brief respite when the crowd saw that the occupants were armed, but the crowd soon resumed its attack. Each soldier, surrounded by persons striking him, was dragged into a nearby park, stripped of most of his clothing, and further assaulted. After being savagely beaten, the corporals were
forced into a taxi and driven to an area where they were forced out of the car. After a final struggle, a gunma n shot each officer and fled.

The K-Dud. Khrushchev had a couple other pro forma visits on the day's schedule. He chatted amiably for 22 minutes with New York's Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who came to call at the Waldorf and delivered a little homily on the Bible and man's faith in God, then posed for one of the liveliest pictures of the week. Khrushchev dutifully went to the top of the Empire State Building and got into a bootless argument over whether the view was as handsome in Moscow. Said Khrushchev: "New York is a fine city, but I like Moscow best of all." He led his entourage on a 35-mile-an-hour sweep through Wall Street and up Broadway—distinguished by two tiny trails of ticker tape fluttering out of a lonely window.
The big item on Khrushchev's schedule —and obviously the big, open failure of his first week abroad—was his disarmament speech to the United Nations, which turned out to be a fabulous dud (see FOREIGN NEWS). That night, when he showed up in his dark suit for a United Nations dinner, Khrushchev seemed dispirited and worn out. He proposed his toast listlessly and headed home at 10:25 p.m. He had some of the bounce back next morning when he swept through Harlem on the way to Idlewild Airport for his flight west in an Air Force Boeing 707 jet. Said he: "It seems that some provocative elements have a negative attitude toward us." But after all, these people were but "a few drops in the sea." Getting back to mingling with the workers again, he said, would "make me feel like a fish in a mountain stream."

In mid-meal Mrs. Khrushchev passed up a note to her husband informing him that there had been a change in schedule for that afternoon: the Khrushchevs were not going to be driven to Disneyland, as they had requested, because the city police could not guarantee their safety. Disneyland is in another county. The city police had added that nobody agreed with them more than Khrushchev's own security detail.
