Terrence had suspected Katherine had steely grit and determination just because of her tenacity in her ability to move on from a nuclear explosion and still carry out her assignment, but the fire she'd shown towards the driver of the truck had revealed something else entirely. It showed Terrence that when pushed, Katherine could find that other level - a level that allowed her to get in touch with her anger and use it appropriately.

Advice For The Evangelists: Follow The Salesman's Model

There is someone behind you with a knife. It's raised above his head, and is aimed at your vital organs. In a split second it will pierce your skin, the muscles in your back, slide between your ribs and kill you. I know this. I see and hear the killer. Not only that, but he called me last night to tell me that he would kill you as you read this today.
Should I tell you about this killer, warn you of his attack? Not to do this would be unethical, immoral, and probably illegal.
How should I warn you? This depends on my relationship with you. You must trust that I know about this killer, although you do not. (There is no time for you to turn and verify my assertion.) Suppose know that there is a killer on campus. You have read about him. in the 'Prince.' You would be much more inclined to believe me than otherwise. But suppose there are other messages on my face and in my posture. Were I laughing as I warned you of the attack, you would not believe me, and would not be likely to respond correctly to escape. You would die.
There are many methods of communication, the most important of which are non-verbal. The words I speak to warn you of the killer are almost inconsequential. My tone of voice, the expression on my face, my trustworthiness and many other factors will have much more influence on the way you judge my information.
This situation is the one in which evangelists and the objects of their evangelism find themselves. The questions of communication it raises are important both to the evangelists and to the people they are trying to educate or persuade.
The situation of my analogy must be one of life and death, for it must be given that evangelists have no choice but to evangelize. Legally and morally, it is impossible to argue with them. An evangelist must be a salesman. A 'holier than thou, I'm doing this for your own good' attitude (which, of course, is not affected or displayed by all evangelists), offering salvation through Christ [ Superstition ], Chrysler, or deodorant soap, is not going to make a sale.
This column does not concern itself with arguments against fundamentalism, but it is evident that a 'do it because God [ Superstition ] said so' argument, however nicely couched and well presented, is not going to convince many people.
No one would buy soap if he did not know for what it is used; no one will accept Christ if he has no concept of an afterlife [ superstition ]. An educated consumer is an evangelist's best customer.
Proselytizing and evangelizing in the year A.D. 33 were not the same as they are today. Then, one could probably go from house to house (tent to tent), and receive a reasonably transparent response from everyone - people would either welcome you or stone you. Also, religion was more well-defined. One was either a Jew, a Christian or a pagan. There were no such things as Catholics, Protestants, Unitarians, Fundamentalists or Coptics. And everyone was religious, in one way or another. Atheism did not exist. Everyone who believed in salvation wanted to be saved. Religion was a hot item.
Today, religious issues are not as clear-cut (although they may be to an evangelist, he must nevertheless take into account the prevalent ambiguity), and religion is no longer something everyone wants.
An evangelist who truly believes in what he is doing must approach his mission with a fervor as close to that I would have were I trying to save my best friend from the man with the knife. One who undertakes a mission as an evangelist must do his best. Door to door rejection, spouting seemingly groundless religious rhetoric is not only inadequate, it's foolish.
There are those who claim that this is better than nothing, that one person saved "pays" for the endless rejection. This may be true, but the point is the dedication of the evangelist, the gravity with which he accepts his command to evangelize. Facing certain rejection would cause a salesman to change his approach. Evangelists, most of them, that is, could learn a lesson here. Offensiveness and inadequacy are not mandated in either the Old or New Testaments.
