Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is an implementation of Microsoft's event-driven programming language Visual Basic 6.0 built into most desktop Microsoft Office applications. Although based on pre-.NET Visual Basic, which is no longer supported or updated by Microsoft, the VBA implementation in Office continues to be updated to support new Office features. VBA is used for professional and end-user development due to its perceived ease-of-use, Office's vast installed userbase, and extensive legacy in business.
It supersedes and expands on the abilities of earlier application-specific macro programming languages such as Word's WordBASIC. VBA macros can be created with malicious intent. Using VBA, most of the security features lie in the hands of the user, not the author.

Ryan let out a breath. The phrase must have come originally from James Greer. When Jack had made the Canary Trap proposal to the Deputy Director, Intelligence, Admiral James Greer had made a joke about it, using those words. Ryan was free to talk. Probably. His CIA security briefing had not exactly covered this situation.
"Excuse me, sir. Nobody ever told me that I was free to talk about that."
Charleston went from jovial to serious for a moment. "Don't apologize, lad. One is supposed to take matters of classification seriously. That paper you wrote was an excellent bit of detective work. One of our problems, as someone doubtless told you, is that we take in so much information now that the real problem is making sense of it all. Not easy to wade through all the muck and find the gleaming nugget. For the first time in the business, your report was first-rate. What I didn't know about was this thing the Judge called the Canary Trap. He said you could explain it better than he." Charleston waved for another glass. A footman, or some sort of servant, came over with a tray. "You know who I am, of course."
"Yes, Admiral. I saw you last July at the Agency. You were getting out of the executive elevator on the seventh floor when I was coming out of the DDI's office, and somebody told me who you were."
"Good. Now you know that all of this remains in the family. What the devil is this Canary Trap?"
"Well, you know about all the problems CIA has with leaks. When I was finishing off the first draft of the report, I came up with an idea to make each one unique."
"They've been doing that for years," Holmes noted. "All one must do is misplace a comma here and there. Easiest thing in the world. If the newspeople are foolish enough to print a photograph of the document, we can identify the leak."
"Yes, sir, and the reporters who publish the leaks know that, too. They've learned not to show photographs of the documents they get from their sources, haven't they?" Ryan answered. "What I came up with was a new twist on that. 'Agents and Agencies' has four sections. Each section has a summary paragraph. Each of those is written in a fairly dramatic fashion."
"Yes, I noticed that," Charleston said. "Didn't read like a CIA document at all. More like one of ours. We use people to write our reports, you see, not computers. Do go on."
"Each summary paragraph has six different versions, and the mixture of those paragraphs is unique to each numbered copy of the paper. There are over a thousand possible permutations, but only ninety-six numbered copies of the actual document. The reason the summary paragraphs are so – well, lurid, I guess – is to entice a reporter to quote them verbatim in the public media. If he quotes something from two or three of those paragraphs, we know which copy he saw and, therefore, who leaked it. They've got an even more refined version of the trap working now. You can do it by computer. You use a thesaurus program to shuffle through synonyms, and you can make every copy of the document totally unique."

And too add on that is my memory of about the year 1978. Theda was married to Randy Romine at the time and at his house he had a really tall High Amplitude Modulation tower antenna. I climbed it often in the dark of night and I used it sometimes to drop my "R2-D2" model rocket to test its parachute. I couldn't afford the Estes chemical rockets back then so the only way it could get airborne was for me to drop it from the high altitude of that tower. I thought of that often years later when my occupation in the United States Navy was to ensure the accuracy and computer fire control of guided missiles and gunfire.

CAPE CANAVERAL -- Daniel Goldin, NASA's new administrator, hailed Endeavour's launch debut on Thursday as a new start for America's space program.
The newest space shuttle shook off a threat of rain and hail to pound through a low bed of clouds at 7:40 p.m. on its way to an ambitious, eight-day mission.
"When I saw the flames shoot out of the bottom of Endeavour, I thought, 'We have a fresh start,'" said Goldin, the former chief executive of TRW Inc. who plans to run the U.S. space program as a business.
He liked what he saw, saying that the $2 billion shuttle was built under budget, delivered on time and performed a picturesque launch.
The space program is at a critical crossroads, he said. The fleet of four orbiters must be capable of sending astronauts into space to repair the Hubble Space Telescope and build Space Station Freedom during this decade.
"We've got to sell our program to the public on merit and not on theatrics," Goldin said.
The big test for Endeavour -- which replaces Challenger, the shuttle that exploded in 1986, killing all seven crew members -- comes on Sunday. Its seven-member crew must capture and repair a wayward telecommunications satellite whose first job will be to broadcast this summer's Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, to an international viewing audience.
The rescue, considered the most complex in the shuttle program's 11-year history, involves the first rendezvous between an orbiting shuttle and a satellite. It is a $150 million gamble for Intelsat, an international satellite organization, which is paying NASA for the rescue.
Intelsat officials are banking on spacewalking astronauts to attach a rocket motor to their satellite on Sunday.

HOUSTON — The nation's newest space shuttle, Endeavour, on Saturday streaked toward an unprecedented attempt to rescue a stranded communications satellite today by attaching it to a new rocket motor designed to propel it into a higher orbit.
As Endeavour entered its third day in space, the seven-member crew made detailed preparations to retrieve the $150-million satellite, which was left in a useless low-Earth orbit in March, 1990, when the commercial Titan rocket that launched it malfunctioned.
Engineers for the communications consortium that owns the satellite, International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, have been directing the device toward its rendezvous position by activating thrusters on the satellite that dropped it from a 350-mile-high orbit to an orbit 225 miles above the Earth.
By Saturday evening, the shuttle was trailing the Intelsat 6 satellite by 975 miles, and was closing at a rate of 86 miles each orbit.
"It's (been) a nice quiet day, building up to the extremely ambitious day we have (Sunday)," Al Pennington, flight director for the National Aeronautics and Space Administation, said during a briefing at the Johnson Space Center. The spacecraft lifted off Thursday evening from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

HOUSTON - What had been a flawless maiden voyage for space shuttle Endeavour ran into serious trouble Sunday as astronauts attempting to snag a stranded $150-million communications satellite sent it spinning out of control.

B. Plaintiff's Efforts to Redeem the Alleged Offer
On or about March 27, 1996, plaintiff submitted an Order Form, fifteen original Pepsi Points, and a check for $700,008.50. (See Def. Stat. 36.) Plaintiff appears to have been represented by counsel at the time he mailed his check; the check is drawn on an account of plaintiff's first set of attorneys. (See Defendant's Notice of Motion, Exh. B (first).) At the bottom of the Order Form, plaintiff wrote in "1 Harrier Jet" in the "Item" column and "7,000,000" in the "Total Points" column. (See id.) In a letter accompanying his submission, plaintiff stated that the check was to purchase additional Pepsi Points "expressly for obtaining a new Harrier jet as advertised in your Pepsi Stuff commercial." (See Declaration of David Wynn, Mar. 18, 1999 ("Wynn Dec."), Exh. A.)
On or about May 7, 1996, defendant's fulfillment house rejected plaintiff's submission and returned the check, explaining that:
The item that you have requested is not part of the Pepsi Stuff collection. It is not included in the catalogue or on the order form, and only catalogue merchandise can be redeemed under this program.
The Harrier jet in the Pepsi commercial is fanciful and is simply included to create a humorous and entertaining ad. We apologize for any misunderstanding or confusion that you may have experienced and are enclosing some free product coupons for your use.
(Wynn Aff. Exh. B (second).) Plaintiff's previous counsel responded on or about May 14, 1996, as follows:
Your letter of May 7, 1996 is totally unacceptable. We have reviewed the video tape of the Pepsi Stuff commercial ... and it clearly offers the new Harrier jet for 7,000,000 Pepsi Points. Our client followed your rules explicitly....
This is a formal demand that you honor your commitment and make immediate arrangements to transfer the new Harrier jet to our client. If we do not receive transfer instructions within ten (10) business days of the date of this letter you will leave us no choice but to file an appropriate action against Pepsi....
(Wynn Aff., Exh. C.) This letter was apparently sent onward to the advertising company responsible for the actual commercial, BBDO New York ("BBDO"). In a letter dated May 30, 1996, BBDO Vice President Raymond E. McGovern, Jr., explained to plaintiff that:
I find it hard to believe that you are of the opinion that the Pepsi Stuff commercial ("Commercial") really offers a new Harrier Jet. The use of the Jet was clearly a joke that was meant to make the Commercial more humorous and entertaining. In my opinion, no reasonable person would agree with your analysis of the Commercial.
