Senior's chemistry research published in science journal Nature

By David Robinson

Princetonian Contributor

As Joanna Slusky '01 spends her time trying to publish a year's amount of research between a thesis' black binding, a thinner, glossier publication with a nationally-recognized name hit news stands this week also baring her name.

Slusky — a chemistry major — is the primary author of a paper published yesterday in the science journal Nature. The paper explores how small changes in a metallic compound's composition effect its superconductivity.

The paper was prepared earlier this year after the discovery that a chemical compound used lor many years is a superconductor at certain temperatures. Slusky explained that some materials, if cooled to low enough temperatures, enter a state called superconductivity, in which they conduct electricity without wasting energy.

The paper Slusky and her colleagues at the Princeton Materials Institute wrote looked at the effect of adding aluminum to the composite of magnesium and boron. The researchers found that adding even a small amount of aluminum caused the compound to lose its superconductivity. "The material lost its superconductivity in an interesting way," chemistry professor Robert Cava — Slusky's adviser — explained. "That's why [the paper] was published in Nature."

Cava said that it is very rare for an undergraduate to publish a paper in Nature. "Nature has the highest standard for publication of any journal," he said.

"Joanna played a big role in getting some very cool results," Cava said. "She worked extremely hard, way beyond the normal call of duty for any undergraduate, to make this happen."

When Cava put out a call to his research group to find people who would be willing to work on this new discovery, he found that Slusky was very interested in the research. Along with other members in Cava's lab, she worked on what Cava called an "exciting, fast paced research topic."

Slusky said the maximum temperature at which superconductivity will occur in a material is called the critical temperature. Scientists are exploring different compounds, trying to find those with the highest possible critical temperatures, Slusky said.

Most research efforts have been focused on ceramic compounds, Slusky said. Recently, though, researchers found that a composite of magnesium and boron, two metals, is a superconductor at extremely low temperatures.

The finding was noteworthy because scientists had not been focusing on the possibility that metallic composites without ceramic content might make good high-temperature superconductors.

Slusky explained that since more is known about superconductivity in metallic compounds than about superconductivity in other materials, the scientific community is eager to investigate metallic superconductors.

Slusky, whose original thesis topic was in another area of chemistry, said she will expand her thesis to include the new research. After graduation, she plans to study Judaism for a few years and then attend graduate school in chemistry. She said she eventually wants to teach and conduct research in an academic setting.

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn’t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.

Salesman

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

Saddam talks to hostages on Iraqi TV/Troops ready to surround embassies

Houston Chronicle News Services

THU 08/23/1990

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

NICOSIA, Cyprus - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, in a tape from Iraq televised today, talked to a group of Western children and adults in his office in an apparent attempt to show the hostages were not being mistreated.

He told the group of Westerners, some believed to be British, that "your presence here and other other places is meant to prevent war."

The talk was broadcast by Cable News Network, which said it was a tape of the meeting. It was not known when the meeting took place.

Saddam was shown sitting in a business suit, patting the Western children on the head. He was surrounded by army officers and an interviewer who provided some translation of the conversation.

One of the officers also repeatedly stroked the head of one child as Saddam spoke to the boy. The grim-faced boys were dresssed in shorts and T-shirts. Saddam talked briefly with them about playing sports.

The Iraqi TV broadcast gave Saddam an unusual forum to repeat the Iraqi position.

A group of adults sat around the room, and also spoke with Saddam through an interpreter. Saddam asked them for forgiveness for keeping them there.

"Your presence here will not be for too long," he said.

"Your presence here is not a source of pleasure for us. This does not make us happy. What would make us happy would be to see you back in your countries or back in the streets of Baghdad (as in normal times)," Saddam said.

Saddam appeared relaxed as he spoke with a boy, identified only as Ian, 7. Saddam asked the boy if he was getting enough milk and food. The child, through an interpreter, said he was getting enough milk and cornflakes.

It was then that Saddam giggled, and turning to an aide in military uniform, he said in Arabic: "He is getting more than our Iraqi children."

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal (Army Design) to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Daniel Harrison (AFSN: 9759A/0-25462), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States from 21 May 1951 to 6 August 1953 while a prisoner of war in North Korea. Despite a deteriorating physical condition resulting from the unskilled amputation of one injured leg, six primitive operations on the remaining one, inhumanly brutal beatings, long periods of sadistic torture and ruthless incessant interrogations, Colonel Harrison remained resolutely steadfast in his refusal to divulge security information to the enemy. In November 1951, during a forced winger march of 140 miles from Kangdong to Pingchong-Ni, Colonel Harrison, although compelled to hobble along on crude, makeshift crutches, and clad only in lightweight clothing, with a singular display of selfless humanitarianism, frequently surrendered his own place on the one small ox-cart to other prisoners whom he considered in worse physical condition than himself. Colonel Harrison was hated and feared by both the North Koreans and Chinese Communists for his aggressive belligerence to their demands. His exemplary conduct, in all places where he was confined, was an instrumental factor in inspiring other prisoners of war with the will to resist the enemy. The outstanding leadership, intrepid courage, tenacious determination and heroic self-sacrifice of Colonel Harrison are worthy of emulation by his countrymen and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

1X05 - YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN

Original Airdate: February 4, 2005 (USA)

(from internet transcript)

Roslin: Why? Colonel Tigh, do I need to know something?

Tigh: It's gone beyond military needs. It's personal. For the Commander and for Lee too. Because of Lieutenant Thrace. Because of her, and because of Zak Adama.

Roslin: The Commander's dead son?

Tigh: It's complicated. It would take about three weeks to explain.

Roslin: We've got about three minutes, talk fast.

Galactica - Adama’s Quarters

Adama and Apollo wait for Roslin standing side by side behind Adama’s desk.

Adama: She's gonna press.

Apollo: I'm with you.

Tigh and Roslin enter.

Tigh: President Roslin.

Adama: Madam President.

Roslin: Skip the formalities, you both know why I'm here.

Adama: Termination of a pilot's rescue mission is a military decision.

Roslin: That's a bunch of crap. This isn't military, it's personal. Neither of you can let go of Kara Thrace because she's your last link to Zak.

Apollo: You don't know anything about my brother-

Roslin: Don't even begin, Captain. You've lost perspective, (to Adama) as have you. Under normal circumstances it would just be sad that the two of you can't come to terms with Zak's death. In this situation, you're putting your pilots at risk and you're exposing the entire fleet to possible attack every moment we stay here.

Adama: We've been at risk of an attack since day one. 's won't be missing the patrol for at least one more day.

Roslin: Colonel Tigh, how much aviation fuel has been expended in this operation?

Tigh: 43% of reserves.

Roslin: Almost half. That's unacceptable. And operations in the moon's atmosphere have put one-third of your fighters out of action. That is also completely unacceptable.

Adama: Crap unacceptable. Whatever it is you feel about this, the recovery of one pilot is a military matter.

Roslin: All right... it's military, fine. And you're both officers and you're both honorable men and you're both perfectly aware that you are putting the lives of over 45,000 people and the future of this civilization at risk, for your personal feelings. Now, if the two of you, of all people, can live with that, then the human race doesn't stand a chance. Clear your heads.

Roslin and Tigh leave. Apollo and Adama remain silent for a long moment and then Apollo goes to an intercom.

Apollo: Combat, stand by.

Adama: (gets the handset from Apollo) This is the Commander. Terminate search operations, bring everyone home. Prepare the fleet to make a jump into the next system. We're leaving.

Unnamed Moon - Inside the Raider

Starbuck: Okay, so it either works or it doesn't. (tries it and it does work. Laughes) Okay, okay... that's power, roll, pitch and yaw. We have control. Take me home! (the Raider lifts off the ground and she laughes again) Oh, you stink, but you're one hell of a flying machine! (the Raider takes off)

Galactica - Adama’s Quarters

Apollo: I want you to know, I think she's wrong. I think we have come to terms with what happened to Zak.

Adama: I haven't.

Stargate: Universe - "Air" - tv series premiere episodes 1 & 2 of 3 - 10/02/2009

WALLACE: OK, OK. Whatever you guys think that I did, I swear you've got the wrong guy.

(Doctor Rush gets out of the car and walks towards the house. O'Neill turns back to Eli.)

O'NEILL: Do I look like someone who'd be standing here if I didn't already know everything there is to know about you?

WALLACE: No, not really.

O'NEILL: Right.

(He steps aside as Rush joins him.)

WALLACE: Who are you?

RUSH: Doctor Nicolas Rush. May we come in?

WALLACE: Why?

RUSH: You spent a great deal of time recently playing an online fantasy game called Prometheus.

(Eli laughs.)

WALLACE: Big Brother's got nothing better to do?!

RUSH: Last night, you solved the Dakara weapons puzzle.

WALLACE: Yeah. A month of my life went into that! D'you know what happens when you solve that thing? Nothing!

O'NEILL: We're here. That happened.
