Dead Like Me
Ah, those were the days. 3 months at 24 Hour Fitness for $100. The old ladies had one side of the pool for their group and I had the other by myself. I went in there after moving to Spokane Valley and seeing an advertisement on television because I really needed more pool time to train. The employee there didn't know what I was talking about but went to make a phone call about it and came back and gave me the deal. That was all arm work. 2.4 miles of swimming on race day with just my arms.

Discovering Sirius B
In 1844 the German astronomer Friedrich Bessel noticed small odd irregularities in the proper motions of the two bright stars, Sirius and Procyon. They did not move uniformly in a straight line, as expected relative to other stars in the sky, but rather seemed to move with irregular motions which seemed to repeat every fifty years. Bessel attributed these motions to the presence of unseen massive companions whose orbital motion produced the irregularities. Binary stars were well known at the time but until Bessel’s discovery it was always possible to identify both stars in a system.
The dark star associated with Sirius was accidentally discovered on the evening of January 31, 1862 in Cambridgeport Massachusetts. Alvan Graham Clark and his father Alvan Clark, two members of the famous family of nineteenth century telescope makers, were testing the lens for an 18 ½-inch telescope, the largest refracting telescope in the world at the time. The Clarks were not aware of the significance of their discovery at the time but did report it to George Phillips Bond, Director of the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge Massachusetts. Using the Harvard’s 15-inch “Great Refractor” Bond succeeded in observing the small companion exactly one week later. Bond immediately recognized the significance of the discovery and promptly published the news in scientific papers in the US and in Europe.
The previously unknown part of the discovery of companion, Sirius B, involves Europe’s most famous astronomer at the time, Urbain J. J. Le Verrier. In 1846 Le Verrier had predicted the position of Neptune, and the new planet promptly discovered in Berlin later that same year. Le Verrier was also aware of the significance of Sirius’ dark star and conducted his own search for it in January 1862. The story also involves the development of the first reflecting telescope to a use metal-on-glass primary mirror. This revolutionary telescope, an 80-cm reflector, had been developed by Léon Foucault and went into service at the Paris Observatory in January 1862.
The new companion of Sirius turned out to be a remarkably faint yet massive star.

A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn’t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - A crippled United Airlines DC-10 crashed a half-mile short of a runway while trying to make an emergency landing Wednesday afternoon, bursting into a cartwheeling fireball that broke into what one eyewitness described as "15,000 pieces" and killing at least 123 of the 293 passengers and crew members on board.
Remarkably, as many as 166 persons survived the violent crash, according to Richard Vohs, a spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad. The fate of four others was not immediately known.
Tail Engine Explodes
The plane's tail engine exploded before the crash but it was not immediately clear how the explosion contributed to what a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman called "complete hydraulic failure," an occurrence regarded as extremely rare in the wide-bodied DC-10, which has three independent hydraulic systems that operate all the plane's control surfaces on its wings and tail, and landing gear and brakes.
As rescuers worked underneath floodlights to remove bodies from the crash site, original estimates of the death toll--one as high as 190, which would have made the crash the second worst in U.S. history--were reduced.
"We don't have a firm count" of the dead, Vohs acknowledged at a press conference seven hours after the crash. "But right now, the number (of survivors) confirmed is 166."
The survivors of Wednesday's United Flight 232 from Denver to Philadelphia via Chicago included several dozen passengers who managed to walk out of a dark, smoke-filled, upside-down section of the jet after it broke off and came to rest in a tall cornfield off the runway.
"I walked out (through the back of the plane) and found myself in the cornfield," passenger David Landsberger told Cable News Network. "We were all walking around in shock. I just walked through it like it was a dream. I was a little dazed."
"It's the goddamndest thing I ever saw in my life," said Charles Mertz of Castle Rock, Colo., another of those who walked away.

The best alternative idea I've come up with, which assumes that 07/19/1989 has nothing to do with me and Iowa, is the detail is simply a sort of placeholder.
My idea recently is that *something* happened to me on 07/19/1989 but it is a detail that I will probably never prove, from the resources I have available to me now.
So, *somehow*, the notion of Flight 232 became part of my conscious awareness - back in year 2006 - *because* it is a detail that can be established from resources available to me now.
Simply, it is a famous incident that happened to me the same day. That's my best alternative theory.
There *is* precedent in my massive journal for this notion. Today, I'm thinking of the day 02/14/1986. For years after the VA hospital in 2006, I had myself almost convinced that I had actually been - among many other activities - a US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot and that I had been POW in Africa beginning 02/14/1986. I worked for years trying to prove that notion and that I had traveled by foot for over a year to escape and that the USS Stark was transporting me on 05/17/1987 to a hospital for medical treatment for serious injury sustained during my overland escape in Africa. I've never proved any of that. Only years later I discovered that 02/14/1986 is the premiere date of that Chuck Norris movie "The Delta Force". And what does that prove? Well, nothing. But it is consistent with my theory of an alternative explanations. I had never even thought to check for that premiere date and I had no way of even guessing what the precise date might be. My massive journal is choked full of me trying to establish that theory about Africa on 02/14/1986 and then years later I discovered that detail about "The Delta Force". There is convoluted sense of some sort of truth there, seems to me now all these years later.
The facts as I remember it all seem so tantalizing consistent to me. I've explored several different possibilities and explanations, such as "time travel information". The theory that people with knowledge of future events knew that event would happen in Iowa, they couldn't stop it, but what they could do was send me along clandestinely, for some reason, among several I have theorized. So - because of that knowledge of the future - I theorize - this code-pattern begins to exhibit a familiar pattern pointing to the event in Iowa.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis cracked open a robin's-egg-blue Florida sky with a deafening roar Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of spectators and NASA officials cheered and sighed with collective relief.
Pounding rain with lightning had been soaking the area for days, preventing two scheduled launches last week and threatening to keep the five U.S. and two Russian crew members indefinitely on the ground. But the storms held off Tuesday.
Atlantis had to begin its journey during a 10-minute window beginning at 3:32 p.m. EDT in order to make its planned docking with the Russian Mir space station, now set for Thursday morning. Mir passed over Kennedy Space Center just minutes before Atlantis took off. By the time the shuttle left the ground, Mir was over Iraq.
"Liftoff of the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission that will herald a new day of international cooperation in space," launch commentator Bruce Buckingham announced as the shuttle, looking like a toy plane attached to a mile-high flamethrower, rode into orbit. The blastoff marked America's 100th manned trip into space.
The mission is the first joint U.S.-Russian mission since a U.S. Apollo spacecraft linked up briefly with a Russian Soyuz in 1975. This time, the two craft are to mate for five days at more than 200 miles above the Earth while the crew conducts several dozen experiments on biological effects of zero gravity to set the stage for building an international space station.
Waiting on Mir for a ride home is astronaut Norman E. Thagard, who broke the record for the longest U.S. spaceflight on June 6, when he logged 85 days on Mir. His two crew mates, cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov, will also be hitching a ride home on Atlantis.
Meanwhile, cosmonauts Anatoly Y. Solovyev, and Nikolai M. Budarin, who will ride up on Atlantis, will remain in space as the next Mir crew.
Atlantis is commanded by Navy Capt. Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson. In the pilot's seat is Air Force Lt. Col. Charles J. Precourt.
