BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

4X01 - HE THAT BELIEVETH IN ME

ORIGINAL AIRDATE (SciFi): 04-APR-2008

(from internet transcript)

Gaeta: Baseships launching missiles, forty -- correction, fifty -- plus inbound. Half targeted on us, half on the Fleet.

Adama: Have triple-a target only missiles going towards the Fleet. We can handle the hits, they can't.

Helo: Sir. All forces, priority: intercept enemy missiles targeting civilian vessels.

(Sam's Viper leaves the tube.)

(Sam's Viper)

Anders: Okay. I am Samuel T. Anders. I was born on Picon. I went to Noyce Elementary School.

Seelix, interrupting him on wireless: -- Get your thumb off the transmit button, Sam. You're blocking the freq.

Anders: Copy that. Oh, frak me!

(Missiles connect with the toroid Fleet ship, blowing out a segment of its ring.)

Seelix: Longshot, hardball. Turkey right four low at three, committing.

Anders: Longshot, I got the... tally? I got your back.

(A Raider engages Seelix's Viper.)

Anders: Seelix, there's a Raider on you!

Seelix: Shoot, Anders!

(Sam's gun locks up.)

Anders: I'm trying to. Gods, come on!

(In slow motion, a Raider turns and looks directly at Sam, as he stares back. Its red eye scans, stops in the middle, and begins to pulse. They look at each other, and the iris of his eye flashes red. The Raider immediately turns and retreats. Sam stares as the Raiders all begin to vanish toward the Basestars.)

Intuitive Machines' Odysseus moon lander didn't deploy camera during historic descent

Sorry, space fans: We won't be getting ground-level views of the first moon landing by an American spacecraft since the Apollo era.

That epic touchdown came courtesy of Intuitive Machines' Odysseus lander, which lowered itself onto the gray dirt about 190 miles (300 kilometers) from the moon's south pole yesterday (Feb. 22).

The success was hard-won. As they prepared for descent yesterday, mission team members discovered that Odysseus' laser rangefinders, which the lander used to determine its altitude and horizontal velocity, weren't working properly. So they switched over to an experimental NASA instrument that Odysseus was carrying, pressing it into service for vital landing operations.

The strategy worked, helping Odysseus become the first private craft ever to soft-land on the moon. But it appears the navigation issue affected one of the other payloads aboard the lander — EagleCam, an instrument built by students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) that was designed to deploy from Odysseus about 100 feet (30 meters) above the lunar surface and photograph the craft's touchdown from below.

Due to the navigation complications, which required the uplink of a software patch, "the decision was made to power down EagleCam during landing and not deploy the device during Odysseus' final descent," Mike Cavaliere, ERAU's director of news and media relations, wrote in an update today (Feb. 23).

"However, both the Intuitive Machines and EagleCam teams still plan to deploy EagleCam and capture images of the lander on the lunar surface as the mission continues," he added. "The time of deployment is currently unknown. Stay tuned!

Moon lander Odysseus tipped sideways on lunar surface

By Steve Gorman and Joey Roulette

February 24, 202412:50 AM PSTUpdated a day ago

The uncrewed robot spacecraft reached the lunar surface on Thursday after a nail-biting final approach and descent in which a problem with its navigation system surfaced, requiring flight controllers on the ground to employ an untested work-around to avoid what could have been a catastrophic crash landing.

The original laser-powered range finders had been rendered non-functional because company engineers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida had inadvertently failed to unlock a safety switch before the lander's launch to space last Thursday, Altemus said.

"That was an oversight on our part," he said, likening the overlooked switch to a safety mechanism on a firearm.
