by me, Kerry Burgess, excerpts from my private journals: 02/26/08 2:34 AM
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Minuet
Minuet was a character created in the holodeck on board the USS Enterprise-D, by Commander William Riker in 2364. Minuet existed within the confines of a program of the Bourbon Street Bar, a New Orleans jazz club set in the year 1958.
Three years later, when Riker was stranded on a planet with a lonely alien known as Barash, the alien created a version of the future for Riker, unknown to him, where Barash took on the role of his son. In that reality, 'Minuet' was his wife, something that alerted Riker to the fact that the reality he was experiencing wasn't real. This mistake apparently occurred due to Barash having read Riker's mind to create the reality, and mistaking his still-strong feelings for Minuet as feelings for a real woman. The typical United States American is childish and naive.
Your feeble, dim-wit mind always thinks that movies, especially action, are always about *somebody*.
Americans, in their pathetic lives, are incapable of seeing through the messenger to the message.

by me, Kerry Burgess, typed after being released from the USA Veterans Affairs psychiatric hospital enduring many months sitting in a grungy two-computer room in a homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle:
01/06/2011
The date Monday 14 May 1984, in the context of my artificial memory, was a travel day for Kerry Burgess with his destination of Orlando Florida for induction into United States Navy basic training for enlisted sailors. He left from where he lived near Ashdown Arkansas and traveled by automobile to the regional airport in Texarkana Arkansas for a flight to another airport for a connecting jet flight to Orlando Florida. I cannot remember if he traveled from Texarkana to Dallas-Fort Worth but that is probably what happened. I know he had a layover in New Orleans Louisiana because Mardi Gras was in progress on that day, and he must have flown by propeller aircraft to Dallas-Fort Worth for the jet flight because I don't think he would have been sent all the way to New Orleans on a propeller aircraft. He arrived in Orlando Florida late in the night and then traveled to the United States naval installation in Orlando where he began induction processing for United States Navy enlisted sailor basic training on Tuesday May 15 1984.

"11001001" [ Star Trek: The Next Generation - TV-series season 1 episode 15 ]
(from internet transcript)
Captain's log, stardate 41365.9. The Enterprise has been ordered to Starbase 74, in orbit around Tarsas Three. A routine maintenance check of all systems will be made, and certain upgrades completed, including the holodeck, with which we've had problems. I anticipate a glowing report. The ship has performed magnificently, beyond anyone's expectations.

"11001001" [ Star Trek: The Next Generation - TV-series season 1 episode 15 ]
(from internet transcript)
[Doctor's office]
RIKER: You look like you're packing to leave forever.
CRUSHER: Oh, Commander Riker. No, I'm just gathering my notes. Professor Terence Epstein is at this starbase.
RIKER: Is that someone I should know of?
CRUSHER: He's the leading mind in cybernetics. He lectured at my medical school. You know the disaster at Micromius?
[Corridor]
CRUSHER: Well, since then I've been working on an approach that combines cybernetics and regeneration. It sounds impossible, I know, but I have found an approach which will work. I mean, what an opportunity. To have a chance to talk with Doctor Epstein. Sorry, Will, I'd love to chat, but I have to go.
[Outside holodeck]
(Bynars with a different style of clothes are working)
RIKER: How's it going?

RIKER: How much has been changed? What exactly did you do?
ONE ONE: Enhancement.
"11001001" [ Star Trek: The Next Generation - TV-series season 1 episode 15 ]
(from internet transcript)
ZERO ZERO: Would you like to try
ONE ONE: the enhancement?
RIKER: All right. What should I choose? Computer, I'd like some place to play some music. A little atmosphere.
COMPUTER: Specify.
RIKER: Jazz.
COMPUTER: Era?
RIKER: Circa 1958.
COMPUTER: Location.
RIKER: Kansas City. No, wait. New Orleans. Bourbon Street Bar, New Orleans. Around two a.m.
COMPUTER: Programme complete. Enter when ready.
[Holodeck]
(A nightclub with a slightly raised stage, tables with candles for light)
RIKER: Very good. Very good indeed. Now I'll need someone to play with. A trio. Piano, bass and drums, and a 'bone for me.
(The musicians appear)
RIKER: Now an audience. Whoa. Too many. I was thinking of something a little more intimate.
(A single blonde in a red dress)
RIKER: Great job, boys. But, computer, blondes and jazz seldom go together. (a red-head) Now that is truly exceptional. But more sultry.
(A brunette at the bar)
RIKER: Gentlemen, if this is what you call enhancement, you've got a gift for understatement.
(The Bynars work on the internal controls as the band starts playing)
RIKER: What's your name? Tell me you love jazz.
MINUET: My name is Minuet and I love all jazz except Dixieland.
RIKER: Why not Dixieland?
MINUET: You can't dance to it.
RIKER: My girl. What's a knockout like you doing in a computer-generated gin joint like this?
MINUET: Waiting for you.
RIKER: Waiting for me? You can't be serious.
MINUET: Oh yes, Will. I've never been more serious in my life.

"Paradigm Shift"
TV-series season 2, episode 6, 03/01/2017
Chrisjen Avasarala, UN Secretary-General: You have a different theory about Eros?
Dr. Michael Iturbi: Different, yeah. More like radical.
Avasarala: This is not a time to keep these things to yourself.
Iturbi: The problem with Colonel Janus, as a scientist, I mean, his personality disorders are obvious, but his problem is that he lacks imagination.
Avasarala: [Chuckles.]
Iturbi: It's true. He can only conceive the world in terms of things he's already seen.
Avasarala: His job is to explain science to politicians. In that regard, it's a useful skill.
Iturbi: But it's of no use here. Eros Station was under quarantine, the result of a mysterious bio-weapon unleashed by Mars, which Mars believes was unleashed by us, which we did not. Did we?
Avasarala: We did not.
Iturbi: Ah, I never doubted that for a moment. Suddenly, Eros, the entire asteroid, moves - In a way that practically defies every single known law of physics. Now, Janus thinks that means there's a new Martian weapon, some staggering breakthrough on an incredible scale of a technology they've been pursuing utterly unsuccessfully for years. But ask yourself this question Does it make any sense at all that Mars would want to test their ground-breaking technology in a bio-hazard zone, that they themselves created?
Avasarala: I suppose not.
Iturbi: So what if this bio-weapon isn't a bio-weapon after all? What if it is responsible in some way we can't yet fully understand, for Eros moving? I believe Eros was infected by an entirely new order of technology, something from somewhere else, somewhere beyond the reach of our species. I believe the Eros incident was our first contact with alien life.
Chrisjen Avasarala, UN Secretary-General: I have a file with 900 pages of analyses and contingency plans for war with Mars, including 14 different scenarios about what to do if they develop an unexpected new technology. My file for what to do if an advanced alien species comes calling. It's 3 pages long, and it begins with "Step one: find God".

MCCOY: Physically human but not human. These are earlier versions of Rayna, Jim. She's an android.
FLINT: Created here by my hand. Here, the centuries of loneliness were to end.
SPOCK: Your collection of Leonardo da Vinci masterpieces, Mister Flint, they appear to have been recently painted on contemporary canvas with contemporary materials. And on your piano, a waltz by Johannes Brahms, an unknown work in manuscript, written in modern ink. Yet absolutely authentic, as are your paintings.
FLINT: I am Brahms.
SPOCK: And da Vinci?
FLINT: Yes.
SPOCK: How many other names shall we call you?
FLINT: Solomon, Alexander, Lazarus, Methuselah, Merlin, Abramson. A hundred other names you do not know.
SPOCK: You were born?
FLINT: In that region of earth later called Mesopotamia, in the year 3834 BC, as the millennia are reckoned. I was Akharin, a soldier, a bully and a fool. I fell in battle, pierced to the heart and did not die.
MCCOY: Instant tissue regeneration coupled with some perfect form of biological renewal. You learned that you were immortal and
FLINT: And to conceal it. To live some portion of a life, to pretend to age and then move on before my nature was suspected.
SPOCK: Your wealth and your intellect are the product of centuries of acquisition. You knew the greatest minds in history.
FLINT: Galileo, Socrates, Moses. I have married a hundred times, Captain. Selected, loved, cherished. Caressed a smoothness, inhaled a brief fragrance. Then age, death, the taste of dust. Do you understand?
SPOCK: You wanted a perfect, ultimate woman, as brilliant, as immortal as yourself. Your mate for all time.
FLINT: Designed by my heart. I could not love her more.
KIRK: Spock, you knew?
SPOCK: I had hoped I was wrong.
FLINT: You cannot love an android, Captain. I love her. She is my handiwork, my property. She is what I desire.
KIRK:: You brought me here to learn this? Does she know?
FLINT: She will never know.
KIRK: Let's go.
FLINT: You will stay.
KIRK: Why?
SPOCK: We have discovered what he is, Captain.
FLINT: If you leave, the curious would follow, the foolish, the meddlers, the officials, the seekers. My privacy was my own. Its invasion be on your head.
SPOCK: We can remain silent.
FLINT: The disaster of intervention, Spock. I've known it.

"Evelyn Hope"
Robert Browning 1812 - 1889
I.
Beautiful Evelyn Hope is dead!
Sit and watch by her side an hour.
That is her book-shelf, this her bed;
She plucked that piece of geranium-flower,
Beginning to die too, in the glass;
Little has yet been changed, I think:
The shutters are shut, no light may pass
Save two long rays thro' the hinge's chink.
II.
Sixteen years old, when she died!
Perhaps she had scarcely heard my name;
It was not her time to love; beside,
Her life had many a hope and aim,
Duties enough and little cares,
And now was quiet, now astir,
Till God's hand beckoned unawares,---
And the sweet white brow is all of her.
III.
Is it too late then, Evelyn Hope?
What, your soul was pure and true,
The good stars met in your horoscope,
Made you of spirit, fire and dew---
And, just because I was thrice as old
And our paths in the world diverged so wide,
Each was nought to each, must I be told?
We were fellow mortals, nought beside?
IV.
No, indeed! for God above
Is great to grant, as mighty to make,
And creates the love to reward the love:
I claim you still, for my own love's sake!
Delayed it may be for more lives yet,
Through worlds I shall traverse, not a few:
Much is to learn, much to forget
Ere the time be come for taking you.
V.
But the time will come,---at last it will,
When, Evelyn Hope, what meant (I shall say)
In the lower earth, in the years long still,
That body and soul so pure and gay?
Why your hair was amber, I shall divine,
And your mouth of your own geranium's red---
And what you would do with me, in fine,
In the new life come in the old one's stead.
VI.
I have lived (I shall say) so much since then,
Given up myself so many times,
Gained me the gains of various men,
Ransacked the ages, spoiled the climes;
Yet one thing, one, in my soul's full scope,
Either I missed or itself missed me:
And I want and find you, Evelyn Hope!
What is the issue? let us see!
VII.
I loved you, Evelyn, all the while.
My heart seemed full as it could hold?
There was place and to spare for the frank young smile,
And the red young mouth, and the hair's young gold.
So, hush,---I will give you this leaf to keep:
See, I shut it inside the sweet cold hand!
There, that is our secret: go to sleep!
You will wake, and remember, and understand.

and I had thoughts that I studied music as well at Princeton.

This sounds very interesting. In my memory of taking Physics my Senior year at Ashdown, I remember being very interested in the class, but we didn’t cover such an interesting topic.

I think I even have memories of the graduate degree process. I am not sure of the terms to describe the process.

I actually do remember... something... I can’t explain it. It feels that I am holding an unmarked, undistinguishable book that I don’t know the name of or the contents but I know I have read it already.

A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn’t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.

Salesman
Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

Even in Spokane, rain during the dead of winter is normal. But when it turns into snow, not only do we see more snow throughout winter, but it also stays on the ground longer.
It’s easy to cite 30-year averages and say things like, “Spokane typically sees 46 inches of snow in a given winter,” or “Coeur d’Alene averages about 70 inches annually.” However, those numbers don’t always reflect how we deal with the snow when it comes.
This winter, you’ll likely notice more snow, and it will stay on the ground longer—a stark contrast to the brown grass we saw so often last winter. It will feel more like the winters that were common not so long ago.

Spokane's mild winter streak snapped by first day in the 20s in nearly a full year
Spokane has seen one of our longest stretches of 30+ degree days in a row, highlighting a mild and "easy" start to the winter season.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The 2024-2025 Winter season in Spokane has been incredibly easy-going so far, with way more rain than snow, temperatures hardly below average, and nothing more inconvenient than the usual fog out by the airport day-after-day.
So I was digging around and found some weird statistics that support more than just the "feeling" that this has been a mild winter for us.
Officially, Spokane has picked up 13" of snow on the season, but that observation is kept at the airport. We would argue that downtown Spokane has seen far less snow this winter

RIKER: I'd be a fool not to realise how lucky I am to be on this ship serving with these people. It's like a dream come true. Just like this.
MINUET: A dream? Is that what this is? Is that what I am?
RIKER: I know you are a computer-generated image, but your smell, your touch, the way you feel. Even the things you say and think seem so real.
MINUET: Thank you.
RIKER: How far can this relationship go? I mean, how real are you?
MINUET: As real as you need me to be.
(They kiss for a long time, then the holodeck doors open and)
PICARD: Astounding.
RIKER: Captain.
PICARD: Oh, I'm sorry, Number One. I didn't mean to interrupt.
RIKER: No, it's all right. Come on in.
PICARD: You picked a wonderful locale. This is something I might have chosen myself.
MINUET: Aren't you going to introduce me?
RIKER: Captain Picard, this is Minuet. Minuet, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
MINUET: Enchantee.
The spirit of that city can always enchant my soul.
MINUET: I have been hoping to meet you.
PICARD: Oh. Have I been the subject of conversation?
MINUET: Indirectly. Come, join us, Jean-Luc. A glass of wine?
PICARD: Thank you.
MINUET: Will was saying how much he enjoys this assignment. It's a credit to you. For a ship and crew to function well it always starts with the Captain. You set the tone.
PICARD: At the moment, it's you who are setting the tone. The sophistication of this programming is remarkable.
MINUET: In what way?
PICARD: The holodeck has been able to give us woodlands and ski slopes, figures that fight and fictional characters with which we can interact, but you, you're very different. You adapt. You spoke to me in French.
MINUET: It was very simple. When I heard your name, I merely accessed the foreign language bank.
PICARD: That's very impressive.
MINUET: Oui, mon chou.

COCHRANE: Well, I wouldn't know anything about that.
SPOCK: You say we'll be unable to get the ship to function again?
COCHRANE: Not a chance. There's some sort of damping field down here. Power systems don't work. Take my word for it.
SPOCK: You don't mind if we continue to try?
COCHRANE: Go right ahead. You've got plenty of time.
KIRK: What about you, Cochrane? How did you get here?
COCHRANE: Marooned, I told you. Look, we'll have lots of time to learn about each other. I have a small place over that way. All the comforts of home. I can even offer you a hot bath.
NANCY: How perceptive of you to notice I needed one.

Res. 324 of July 2, 1992, has asked that I "expeditiously issue an Executive order requiring all executive branch departments and agencies to declassify and publicly release without compromising United States national security all documents, files, and other materials pertaining to POWs and MIAs;" and
WHEREAS, indiscriminate release of classified material could jeopardize continuing United States Government efforts to achieve the fullest possible accounting of Vietnam-era POWs and MIAs; and
WHEREAS, I have concluded that the public interest would be served by the declassification and public release of materials pertaining to Vietnam-era POWs and MIAs as provided below;
NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order as follows:
Section 1. All executive departments and agencies shall expeditiously review all documents, files, and other materials pertaining to American POWs and MIAs lost in Southeast Asia for the purposes of declassification in accordance with the standards and procedures of Executive Order No. 12356.
Sec. 2. All executive departments and agencies shall make publicly available documents, files, and other materials declassified pursuant to section 1, except for those the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy of returnees, family members of POWs and MIAs, or other persons, or would impair the deliberative processes of the executive branch.

University may pay millions for computer recalibration
By MARSHALL M. BURKES
The imminent arrival of the year 2000 isn't causing much celebration among some university administrators. Computer systems used by many of the university's administrative departments have already begun to fall victim to a widespread glitch known as "the 2000 problem," Vice President for Computing and Information Technology Ira Fuchs said. The problem occurs when older computer systems, like many of those the university uses, try to do calculations involving dates after Dec. 31, 1999. Most of these systems only use the last two digits of a year, and therefore cannot distinguish between years such as 1996 and 2096.
It may cost the university between $800,000 and $5 million to correct the 2000 problem, Associate Provost Georgia Nugent '73 said. The expenses of fixing the 2000 problem have been grouped with a larger effort to update the university's computer systems, Fuchs said. That plan, known as "Partnership 2000," may cost $50 million, he added. Under Partnership 2000, all university departments will evaluate their computer systems and upgrade them
