NAVAL STATION NEWPORT, R. I., (NNS) -- Numerous buildings on Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport are named in honor of Navy heroes - Nimitz, King, Callahan and Ripley to name a few; on July 9 another Navy hero received that distinction as the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Combat Training Pool was dedicated here.
The newest facility in the Officer Training Command (OTC) area of the base was named in honor of Murphy, a 2001 graduate of Officer Candidate School (OCS). The Navy SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) was killed in action while conducting counterterrorism operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, June 28, 2005.
Murphy's parents accepted the Medal of Honor from President George W. Bush in a White House ceremony held October 27, 2007.
Many members of the Murphy family, including his father and mother, Daniel and Maureen, and brother, John, friends and fellow service members attended the celebration of Murphy's life,
"Thank you all for honoring Mike and us," said Daniel Murphy. "I think Mike would have thought it appropriate to have this pool named for him in that it will train future Navy officers."
Murphy also recognized another Medal of Honor recipient - retired Navy Capt. Thomas G. Kelley - who was in the crowd of more than 100 guests.
Special guest speakers included Rear Adm. Mark Boensel, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, and Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli, deputy commander, Naval Special Warfare Command.
"It's great the Navy decided to name this facility after Lieutenant Murphy. It's very well deserved," Bonelli said.
"He is one of our very special Naval Special Warfare heroes. SEAL stands for Sea, Air, Land, and when you look at his career and what he did, when he did it and how he did it, he worked and trained in all three of those environments. It's great to see his name on this training facility."
Boensel called the pool the completion of a great deal of hard work by a great deal of great people to honor a Navy hero.
"The definition of hero in the dictionary, and there is a whole bunch of them, that best exemplifies this facility and the name it bears is 'nobility known for military achievement.' I think that definition is certainly appropriate in describing Lieutenant Murphy, and it's also certainly appropriate that this facility will be used by many generations of young Americans," Boensel said.

Cowardice
Cowardice describes a personality trait which is typically viewed as a negative characteristic and has been generally frowned upon (see norms) within most, if not all global cultures, while courage, typically viewed as its direct opposite, is generally rewarded and encouraged.
"Cowardice" can be difficult to define outside of specific social contexts. In general terms, it is the perceived failure to demonstrate sufficient bravery in the face of an adverse situation. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word "coward" comes from an Old French word coart (modern French couard), a combination of the word for "tail" and an agent noun suffix. It would therefore have meant "one with a tail" — perhaps one in the habit of turning it, or it may be derived from the dog's habit of putting its tail between its legs when it is afraid.

Iraq may sue Israel for 1981 nuke attack

Iraq is reportedly considering ways to force Israel to pay reparations for launching airstrikes on its nuclear reactor near Baghdad.
Iraqi legislators are looking into adopting a resolution that would urge Tel Aviv to pay billions of dollars in compensations for its 1981 attack on the Osiraq (Tammuz) nuclear reactor, Iraqi daily al-Sabbah reported on Thursday.
The lawmakers leading the campaign say they have based their case on United Nations Security Council Resolution 487, insisting that the official UN condemnation gives Baghdad the right to appropriate money for what it has suffered.
Mohammed Naji Mohammed -- a member of parliament with the United Iraqi Alliance coalition -- is leading the campaign against Israel.
Israeli warplanes struck the Iraqi nuclear reactor in a surprise attack code-named Operation Opera in June 1981. Israeli officials at the time claimed that its operation was aimed at preventing then dictator Saddam Hussein from using the reactor weaponization.

§ 2388. Activities affecting armed forces during war
(a) Whoever, when the United States is at war, willfully makes or conveys false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies; or Whoever, when the United States is at war, willfully causes or attempts to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or willfully obstructs the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States, to the injury of the service or the United States, or attempts to do so— Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.
(b) If two or more persons conspire to violate subsection (a) of this section and one or more such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be punished as provided in said subsection (a).
(c) Whoever harbors or conceals any person who he knows, or has reasonable grounds to believe or suspect, has committed, or is about to commit, an offense under this section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.
(d) This section shall apply within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States, and on the high seas, as well as within the United States.

October 1960 -- The Andy Griffith Show
“Anybody here know why these two should not be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace.”
With this opening line, a pop-culture phenomenon was born on October 3, 1960, at 9:30 p.m. when The Andy Griffith Show premiered. The show starred Andy Griffith, a North Carolina native and graduate of the University of North Carolina, who had risen to national fame with the comic monologue, What It Was Was Football, and a starring role in the stage and film version of No Time For Sergeants.
The series pilot aired on February 15, 1960, and was actually an episode of The Danny Thomas Show. It introduced viewers to Sheriff Andy Taylor, played by Griffith, and the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which is widely believed to be based on Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina—although he has often denied it. The following October the series officially began with an installment titled “The New Housekeeper.” The show opened with Andy’s former housekeeper, Rose, getting married and moving away. Andy then asks Aunt Bee, who helped raise him, to assist in taking care of his son, Opie. Although he adamantly opposes Aunt Bee in the beginning—she can’t fish, catch frogs, or play baseball like Rose—Opie ends up accepting her into the household, fearing that she can not survive in a world with such limited skills. This episode also introduced viewers to Deputy Barney Fife, Sheriff Taylor’s comically inept sidekick.

Danny runs a stop sign that is apparently sitting on a road for no reason and is pulled over by the Sheriff of Mayberry, Andy Taylor. His adamant protesting leads him to discover that the Sheriff is not only the only law in town but also the justice of the peace and the editor of the town newspaper. When Danny's smug big-city attitude gets the best of him, Andy decides to level a more serious fine on him. Danny refuses and is promptly locked up!
While locked in a cell, Danny gets to see first hand how Andy's quirky, unconventional style keeps not only the peace in town but makes Mayberry a great place to live. Danny scheme to expose Andy as a no good crooked small town law man but soon discovers that he anything but. After realizing the error of his ways, Danny pays the fine.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.
