At great risk to themselves, the crew worked close to the river surface, at one time coming so close to the ice-clogged river that the helicopter's skids went beneath the surface of the water.
The helicopter crew lowered a line to survivors to tow them to shore. First to receive the line, Bert Hamilton, who was treading water about ten feet from the floating tail, took the single lifeline dangling beneath the chopper and passed it under his arms. The others watched while the helicopter carried him a hundred yards to the Virginia shore and returned. The helicopter pilot had to gently move the survivor across the ice, while avoiding the sides of the bridge and keeping an eye on the crowd.

NASA's Ares I-X Rocket Completes Successful Flight Test
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA's Ares I-X test rocket lifted off at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a two-minute powered flight. The test flight lasted about six minutes from its launch from the newly-modified Launch Complex 39B until splash down of the rocket's booster stage nearly 150 miles down range.
"This is a huge step forward for NASA's exploration goals," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Ares I-X provides NASA with an enormous amount of data that will be used to improve the design and safety of the next generation of American spaceflight vehicles -- vehicles that could again take humans beyond low Earth orbit."
The 327-foot tall Ares I-X test vehicle produced 2.6 million pounds of thrust to accelerate the rocket to nearly 3 g's and Mach 4.76, just shy of hypersonic speed. It capped its easterly flight at a sub-orbital altitude of 150,000 feet after the separation of its first stage, a four-segment solid rocket booster.
Parachutes deployed for recovery of the booster and the solid rocket motor will be recovered at sea for later inspection. The simulated upper stage, Orion crew module, and launch abort system will not be recovered.
"The most valuable learning is through experience and observation," said Bob Ess, Ares I-X mission manager. "Tests such as this -- from paper to flight -- are vital in gaining a deeper understanding of the vehicle, from design to development."
Wednesday's flight offered an early opportunity to test and prove hardware, facilities, and ground operations - important data for future space vehicles. During the flight, a range of performance data was relayed to the ground and also stored in the onboard flight data recorder. The 700 sensors mounted on the vehicle provide flight test engineering data to correlate with computer models and analysis. The rocket's sensors gathered information in several areas, including assembly and launch operations, separation of the vehicle's first and second stages, controllability and aerodynamics, the re-entry and recovery of the first stage and new vehicle design techniques.

NASA successfully blasted a new, 327-foot rocket off its Kennedy Space Center launch pad on Wednesday morning.
The test of the Ares 1, which was just a concept on paper three years ago, may boost NASA's efforts to secure support for the beleaguered program with which the space agency intends to replace the space shuttle.
At 10:30 a.m. the solid- fuel rocket lifted off, reaching an elevation of 130,000 feet a few minutes later and proving its value as a booster rocket to launch human capsules into orbit.
"We completely met our success criteria," said Bob Ess, the Ares 1-X mission manager. "We blew them away."
The test comes as President Barack Obama is considering the future of human spaceflight.
The Ares 1 is the first component of NASA's Constellation Program, which intends to eventually develop a more massive launch vehicle that can boost astronauts back to the moon and then beyond into the solar system.
But a recent report from a committee led by Norm Augustine, which Obama requested, cast doubt on the ability of NASA to deliver the Ares 1 rocket by 2015.
After Wednesday's test, the Constellation Program's manager, Jeff Hanley, was asked if he felt vindicated by the Ares 1's success.
"Vindication really does not describe it well," he said.
"It's a sense of validation that the course we have laid out is executable.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.
