Shoe bomb suspect to remain in custody

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A man accused of walking aboard an American Airlines flight over the weekend with explosives in his shoes and trying to light them calmly entered a U.S. District courtroom Monday morning to face charges related to the incident.
Richard C. Reid, 28, has been charged with interfering with the performance of the duties of flight crew members by assault or intimidation, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Boston.
Flight attendants and passengers wrestled and subdued Reid aboard American Airlines Fight 63 from Paris, France, to Miami, Florida, after he lit a match in an attempt to ignite his shoes, according to court documents. The plane was diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport, where it landed safely.
If convicted, Reid faces up to 20 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. He is being held at a correctional facility in Plymouth, south of Boston.
At Monday's brief hearing, Reid was read his rights but did not enter a plea because he does not have an attorney yet.
U.S. Magistrate Judith Dein approved a request by U.S. attorneys for Reid to remain in custody until the pending trial because of the dangerousness of the situation and his risk of flight.
Government sources said that Reid, who identified himself as a convert to Islam, has a British mother and a Jamaican father. New Scotland Yard and French authorities said he is a British citizen.
U.S. law enforcement authorities have found no connection between the man and any terrorist groups, sources said.
A French Ministry of Interior spokesman said Reid had adopted the name of Abdel Raheem after converting to Islam.
Though the man's passport identified him as Richard Colvin Reid, a French Border Police spokesman said the FBI identified him as Tariq Raja, born August 12, 1973

WASHINGTON - Richard Armitage, former deputy secretary of state, has acknowledged that he was the person whose conversation with a columnist in 2003 prompted a long, politically laden criminal investigation in what became known as the CIA leak case, a lawyer involved in the case said on Tuesday.
Armitage did not return calls for comment.
However, the lawyer and other associates of Armitage have said he has confirmed that he was the initial and primary source for the columnist, Robert Novak, whose column of July 14, 2003, identified Valerie Plame as a CIA officer.
Plame was a covert employee, and after Novak printed her identity, the agency requested an investigation to see whether her name had been leaked illegally. Some administration critics said her name had been made public in a campaign to punish her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who accused the Bush administration of twisting intelligence to justify the Iraq war.

The phrase Plame Affair (also known as the CIA leak scandal, the CIA leak case, the CIA leak grand jury investigation, and Plamegate) refers to the identification of Valerie Plame Wilson as a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer. Mrs. Wilson's relationship with the CIA was classified information. The disclosure was made in a newspaper column entitled "Mission to Niger" written by Robert Novak, and published on July 14, 2003.
Mrs. Wilson's husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, has stated his opinion in various interviews and subsequent writings (as listed in his 2004 memoir The Politics of Truth) that members of former President George W. Bush's administration revealed Mrs. Wilson's covert status as retribution for his op-ed entitled "What I Didn't Find in Africa," published in The New York Times on July 6, 2003.

On November 16, 2005, in an article entitled "Woodward Was Told of Plame More Than Two Years Ago," published in The Washington Post, Jim VandeHei and Carol D. Leonnig revealed that Bob Woodward was told of Valerie Wilson's CIA affiliation a month before it was reported in Robert Novak's column and before Wilson's July 6, 2003 editorial in the New York Times. At an on-the-record dinner at a Harvard University Institute of Politics forum in December 2005, according to the Harvard Crimson, Woodward discussed the matter with fellow Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, responding to Bernstein’s claim that the release of Plame’s identity was a "calculated leak" by the Bush administration with "I know a lot about this, and you’re wrong." The Crimson also states that "when asked at the dinner whether his readers should worry that he has been 'manipulated' by the Bush administration, Woodward replied, 'I think you should worry. I mean, I worry.'"
Although it had been reported in mid-November 2005 that Novak's source was National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, almost a year later media reports revealed that the source of this information was Richard Armitage, which Armitage himself also confirmed.
On February 12, 2007, Woodward testified in "Scooter" Libby's trial as a defense witness. While on the witness stand, an audiotape was played for the jury that contained the interview between Armitage and Woodward in which Plame was discussed. The following exchange is heard on the tape:
WOODWARD: But it was Joe Wilson who was sent by the agency. I mean that's just —
ARMITAGE: His wife works in the agency.
WOODWARD: Why doesn't that come out? Why does —
ARMITAGE: Everyone knows it.
WOODWARD: — that have to be a big secret? Everyone knows.
ARMITAGE: Yeah. And I know Joe Wilson's been calling everybody. He's pissed off because he was designated as a low-level guy, went out to look at it. So, he's all pissed off.
WOODWARD: But why would they send him?
ARMITAGE: Because his wife's a [expletive] analyst at the agency.
WOODWARD: It's still weird.
ARMITAGE: It — It's perfect. This is what she does she is a WMD analyst out there.
WOODWARD: Oh she is.
ARMITAGE: Yeah.
WOODWARD: Oh, I see.
ARMITAGE: Yeah. See?

Cowardice
Cowardice describes a personality trait which is typically viewed as a negative characteristic and has been generally frowned upon (see norms) within most, if not all global cultures, while courage, typically viewed as its direct opposite, is generally rewarded and encouraged.
"Cowardice" can be difficult to define outside of specific social contexts. In general terms, it is the perceived failure to demonstrate sufficient bravery in the face of an adverse situation. Cowards are usually seen to have avoided or refused to engage in a confrontation or struggle which has been deemed good or righteous by the wider culture in which they live.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word "coward" comes from an Old French word coart (modern French couard), a combination of the word for "tail" and an agent noun suffix. It would therefore have meant "one with a tail" — perhaps one in the habit of turning it, or it may be derived from the dog's habit of putting its tail between its legs when it is afraid.
