Antidepressants fail to cure the symptoms of major depression in half of all patients with the disease even if they receive the best possible care, according to a definitive government study released yesterday.
Significant numbers of patients continue to experience symptoms such as sadness, low energy and hopelessness after intensive treatment, even as about an equal number report an end to such problems -- a result that quickly lent itself to interpretations that the glass was either half empty or half full.
The $35 million taxpayer-funded study was the largest trial of its kind ever conducted. It provided what industry-sponsored trials have rarely captured: Rather than merely ask whether patients are getting better, the study asked what patients most care about -- whether depression can be made to disappear altogether.

[This is pretty much the kind of treatment I received in the VA and before that at UW Medical Center. I like my doctor at UW. I don't remember her name, but I saw her again at the VA. I always felt good around her. That must be a good quality in a doctor.]

as someone specific. I feel like that is part of the manipulation. I have noticed something similar in real dreams, but I don't think it is the same here. I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason.

I hate being imprisoned here 4% less than I did being imprisoned in Pioneer Square.
This has also been a good exercise to suggest how I would behave in the future if I ever develop Alzheimer's. It was funny the other day; I was taking the bus down Aurora, I had just written something earlier in my journal about this feeling as though I was in the early stages of Alzheimers. I noticed a Holiday Inn Express had on their sign outside on the first line something about "continental breakfast." On the second line was "Alzheimer's Disease." I read it in the context of those commercials they run where people say things such as "I'm not really a brain surgeon, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night." It's clever and disturbing all at the same time. I doubt even Stephen King could write anything as disturbing as my reality every day.

Patty Murray Vs. Adams -- State Lawmaker Is First Democrat To Go For Senate Seat

OLYMPIA - State Sen. Patty Murray, who made her political entrance just four years ago with an upset election to the Legislature, now has a loftier goal: toppling fellow Democrat Sen. Brock Adams.
Murray, who represents the Shoreline area north of Seattle, said yesterday she will run for the U.S. Senate in 1992 as a self-styled "voice for middle-class families."
She said she would file election papers next week, making her the first Democrat to jump in against Adams. She probably won't be the last.
Former U.S. Rep. Mike Lowry of Seattle, who has a large and loyal following among party liberals, also is expected to run in what is shaping up to be a bruising Democratic primary. Lowry says he won't officially announce his 1992 election plans until after New Year's Day.
But he said he would drop a broad hint tonight when he mails out a fund-raising letter to 25,000 supporters in which "I try to remove any questions about when and if I run, what I will run for."
Several Democratic insiders say Lowry has, in fact, made up his mind to seek the Senate seat that has eluded him in two previous races.
Murray said her candidacy would stress family issues: improving schools, better access to health care and higher education, and tax relief for the middle class.
"It's not just Brock, it's the whole U.S. Senate," she said. "It's very clear there is a void back there and I'm going to fill it. Nobody back there represents the interests of ordinary families, who are in big trouble."

Same Concerns, Different Angles -- Don Bonker And Patty Murray Debate The Issues In Senate Race

OLYMPIA - While tossing off a couple of weak jokes about his tie, her shoes and even their wristwatches, Don Bonker and Patty Murray did get around to the issues.
As the first debate between the two prominent Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate, this was to be a test of substance.
Trouble was, with a couple of exceptions, the jokes offered as much help in distinguishing the candidates yesterday as the debate did.
For example, Bonker said he was in the race to address the economic well-being of the country, while Murray said she's motivated by pressures on individual and family finances.
Those differences in perspective are what Murray has continued to stress. She started a running joke months ago by relating a story about an Olympia lawmaker who said Murray would never be taken seriously because she was "just a mom in tennis shoes." With that, the tennis shoe became the symbol of her campaign and she began decrying all the male politicians wearing blue suits and red ties.
So yesterday, awkwardly acknowledging Murray's joke, Bonker began the debate by taking off his red tie - though he kept on a blue blazer.

The first flames became visible in the east section of the sprawling structure about noon. A second blaze broke out minutes later in the compound watch tower. By 12:30 p.m. the majority of the compound appeared to be engulfed in flames. No apparent attempts were made to battle the blaze. There were no reports that anyone fled the building.
The assault on the compound began when FBI agents in an armored vehicle battered through the walls of the compound and pumped tear gas inside in an effort to force out cult leader David Koresh and his followers to end a 51-day standoff.
The assault began about 6 a.m. and by midmorning, a hole approximately 10 feet wide had been punched into the building near the front door. At least three holes had been knocked in the southwest wall, effectively destroying the second story.

Introduction
In July, 1976, Viking Orbiter 1 was acquiring images of the Cydonia region of Mars as part of the search for potential landing sites for Viking Lander 2. On 25 July, 1976, it photographed a region of buttes and mesas along the escarpment that separates heavily cratered highlands to the south from low lying, relatively crater-free, lowland plains to the north. Among the hills was one that, to the Viking investigators scrutinizing the images for likely landing sites, resembled a face. Owing to the importance of the landing site search, and with a desire to provide the public with at least one familiar-looking landform amid the craters and exotic terrains found all over Mars, an image including the face-like hill was released as part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's public relations effort. This picture is one of many taken in the northern latitudes of Mars by the Viking 1 Orbiter in search of a landing site for Viking 2.
The picture shows eroded mesa-like landforms. The huge rock formation in the center, which resembles a human head, is formed by shadows giving the illusion of eyes, nose and mouth. The feature is 1.5 kilometers (one mile) across, with the sun angle at approximately 20 degrees. The speckled appearance of the image is due to bit errors, emphasized by enlargement of the photo. The picture was taken on July 25 from a range of 1873 kilometers (1162 miles).

Whoever violates any provision of section 1962 of this chapter shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years (or for life if the violation is based on a racketeering activity for which the maximum penalty includes life imprisonment), or both, and shall forfeit to the United States, irrespective of any provision of State law—
(1) any interest the person has acquired or maintained in violation of section 1962;
(2) any—
(A) interest in;
(B) security of;
(C) claim against; or
(D) property or contractual right of any kind affording a source of influence over;
any enterprise which the person has established, operated, controlled, conducted, or participated in the conduct of, in violation of section 1962; and
(3) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds which the person obtained, directly or indirectly, from racketeering activity or unlawful debt collection in violation of section 1962.

Traveling in reverse
People watching afternoon television on July 23, 1962, had regular programming interrupted by a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies from Wrigley Field.
The game between two of the worst teams in the National League at the time was not important.
The important thing was, the game was being telecast live to Europe, the first time that had ever happened.
The three television networks at the time, ABC, NBC and CBS interrupted their programing because of the importance of this event.
Americans were able to see live pictures of the Eiffel Tower and scenes from Canada.
Everyone knew it was important because Walter Cronkite and Chet Huntley were both involved in bringing this breaking news to the viewers.
Everything that happened on July 23, was possible because the Telstar 1 satellite had been launched into orbit on July 10, 1962.

President Kennedy offered a gloomy report on Berlin at his news conference. He said Secretary of State Rusk had made no progress in his talks with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko in Geneva on the Berlin impasse. The President added, however, that Mr. Rusk would stay on as long as a useful purpose would be served. (1:6)
Seismic instruments in the United States clearly detected a large underground explosion set off in the Sahara by France May 1. This disclosure led to suggestions that the United States might modify its long-standing demands for an international control system to police nuclear test bans. While President Kennedy said at his news conference that acceptance of a national control system, as urged by the Soviet Union, was "not the position of the United States at this time," William C. Foster, head of the United States Disarmament and Arms Control Agency, outlined the possibility of some such system. (1:7)
President Kennedy attacked the Republicans as being almost wholly negative on domestic social legislation and repeatedly went out of his way to indicate he was through trying to woo them in Congress. (1:1; Text, page 12)
International television became a reality yesterday when American broadcasters bounced "live" pictures off the communications satellite Telstar, and broadcasters in Europe bounced their own pictures back. Viewers on both sides of the Atlantic reported clear reception.

Jack the Ripper
"Jack the Ripper" is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name originated in a letter, written by someone claiming to be the murderer, that was disseminated in the media. The letter is widely believed to have been a hoax, and may have been written by a journalist in a deliberate attempt to heighten interest in the story. Other nicknames used for the killer at the time were "The Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron".
Attacks ascribed to the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes from the slums whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer possessed anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and letters from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard. The "From Hell" letter, received by George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, included half of a preserved human kidney, supposedly from one of the victims. Mainly because of the extraordinarily brutal character of the murders, and because of media treatment of the events, the public came increasingly to believe in a single serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper".
Extensive newspaper coverage bestowed widespread and enduring international notoriety on the Ripper. An investigation into a series of brutal killings in Whitechapel up to 1891 was unable to connect all the killings conclusively to the murders of 1888, but the legend of Jack the Ripper solidified. As the murders were never solved, the legends surrounding them became a combination of genuine historical research, folklore, and pseudohistory. The term "ripperology" was coined to describe the study and analysis of the Ripper cases. There are now over one hundred theories about the Ripper's identity, and the murders have inspired multiple works of fiction.
