I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag
because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

I have been thinking that on at least two occasions, I snuck into President Reagan's quarters at Camp David to assess the effectiveness of his U.S. Secret Service protection. I think that experience is reflected in what I wrote about the officer on the Taylor telling me about when he worked at the White House and had to wake up Reagan one night to give him a message.
what that represents is that I snuck in the first time and fell asleep on his couch and he woke me up the next morning. I did that to show how long I had been in there without anyone finding me. The next time, I went into their bedroom and woke him up and told him I had got past his protection detail again. He raised hell with the Secret Service and I was certainly not popular with the Secret Service after that.

Aware of the need for boating safety, the Congress enacted the joint resolution of June 4, 1958 (36 U.S.C. 161) as amended, requesting that the President proclaim a National Safe Boating Week.

The President. Well, thank you all for being here. Nancy and I want to welcome you all to the White House for this happy occasion. On days like this and at lunches like this, I find myself looking up and thinking what a wonderful job I have. We're here today to present the Medal of Freedom to seven Americans. This medal is the highest civilian honor our nation can bestow. And I've always thought it highly significant that we call it not the Medal of Talent or the Medal of Valor or the Medal of Courage or Genius but the Medal of Freedom. I think that says a lot about our values and what we honor and what we love.
Freedom is important to all of us. As someone who spent many years making speeches, I have quoted many definitions of freedom—some very moving and eloquent. But I've always liked George Orwell's blunt and unadorned statement. He said, "Freedom is the right to say no." There's something kind of happily rebellious about that definitions and I thought of it this morning because I decided this year's recipients of the Medal of Freedom are distinguished by this. You're a group of happy rebels. In your careers and in the way you have lived your lives, you've all said no—a most emphatic no—to mediocrity, to averageness, to timidity. You've said no to the rules of the game and the regulations of the day. You've said no to the conventional wisdom, no to the merely adequate, no to the limits and limitations on yourselves and others.
But it's probably true that there is little point to freedom unless it's accompanied by a big yes! And each of you has uttered a resounding Whitmanesque yes to many things—to excellence and risk and reach, to courage and the untried and the supposedly impossible. You've rebelled against the artificial and embraced the authentic. You've achieved a great deal. And your creativity itself has been life-affirming, for creation is a profoundly faithful act, an act that says, "I trust in the future, and I trust in life itself."
You're all originals. You've all made America better—a better place—and you've made it seem a better place in the eyes of the people of the world. And this today is just our way of saying thanks. And without further ado, I'm going to read the citations for the medals now and award them to the recipients.

Dr. Warren Wright Bacon, 84, `Was Always Learning Something'

His best friend couldn't believe his eyes: There was Dr. Warren Wright Bacon, steering a ferry boat across Puget Sound.
"He piloted that thing clear from Bremerton to Seattle and put it in the dock," said Dr. Richard Walden about the unusual event three decades ago. "The captain told me that no one knew more about the boat than `Doc.' "
Learning all he could about the workings of a ferry boat was just one of the many hobbies of Dr. Bacon, who died Oct. 30 in Edmonds.
Dr. Bacon was born Feb. 11, 1907, in Minnesota, and he graduated from Loma Linda, Calif., University Medical School in 1942. During World War II he practiced near Bremerton, treating Navy workers at the shipyard.
After the war he started a family practice in Gig Harbor, later returning to Loma Linda to be trained in radiology. He practiced radiology in Edmonds and served on the teaching staff at the University of Washington Medical School until his retirement at age 65.

Meanwhile, in April of 1989, the Rangers' owner, Eddie Chiles, sold the team to an investment group headed by future President of the United States George W. Bush. Bush would serve as the Rangers' managing partner until he was elected Governor of Texas in 1994. During this time, the Rangers and the City of Arlington decided to construct a new stadium to replace the aging Arlington Stadium. LOS ANGELES -- Mounting evidence links former football star O.J. Simpson to the slayings of his former wife and a man who was a waiter at a trendy Brentwood restaurant, Los Angeles police sources said Tuesday.
Much of the investigation Tuesday was focused on bloodstains -- both at Simpson's Brentwood mansion and at his former wife's townhouse two miles away, where the crime was committed late Sunday.
Police officers also combed Simpson's Tudor-style home for clues, taking away a pair of running shoes and towing a Ford Bronco parked outside.
Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, and Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25, were stabbed to death Sunday night
Police said Tuesday that Nicole Simpson and Goldman, a waiter at a Brentwood restaurant she frequented, were not linked romantically. Friends said he apparently was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, returning a pair of glasses she had left at the restaurant, when the attack occurred.
Neither the coroner's office nor police would release further details about the nature of the stab wounds or the weapons used to inflict them, but a source close to the investigation said the woman's throat was slashed and Goldman's wounds

The South Texas sun hung low on the sprawling Armstrong Ranch when Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting party encountered two last coveys of quail.
The late-day find could have meant a winged bonanza for Cheney, prominent Austin lawyer Harry Whittington and Pamela Willeford, U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Instead, the final shot from Cheney's 28-gauge Perazzi Brescia shotgun found Whittington, peppering his right torso, neck and face with up to 200 pellets.
"I'm the guy who pulled the trigger and shot my friend," Cheney said Wednesday on Fox News Channel, his only public account of the Feb. 11 shooting. "And I say that is something I'll never forget."
But despite a week of details trickling out from Cheney, Whittington, eyewitnesses and official reports of the incident, a clear picture of exactly what happened on the ranch's Comal Pasture has yet to emerge.
The White House also has been battered with questions about why Cheney waited until the next day to announce the shooting and then did so by having ranch owner Katharine Armstrong call the local newspaper.
Distance questioned
Those involved have not detailed exactly where they were positioned or how far apart they were spaced when Cheney squeezed the trigger. Ballistics, medical and hunting experts have said it's possible to sustain Whittington's level of injury, including one pellet lodged near or in his heart, from a range of 30 yards.
But to others, Whittington's wounds suggest he might have been closer.
"I was surprised (at the seriousness of injury), and I guess that kind of means we can all be surprised," said Dr. Paul Radelat, a longtime Houston pathologist.
Initially, witnesses said Whittington should have announced he was rejoining the group, although hunting experts countered that the shooter has the ultimate responsibility for what's on the other end of the muzzle. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department classified it as an error in judgment by Cheney, who along with Whittington did not have the newly required $7 upland bird stamp on their hunting licenses.
An ambulance shadowing the vice president, a standard procedure, took Whittington from the desolate scrub to Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg in nearby Kingsville. From there, a helicopter took the attorney to the better-equipped Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial.
At first, Whittington's wounds were said to be minor. Then a migrating pellet triggered a mild heart attack Tuesday. He left the hospital Friday in a dark suit, looking fit except for the right side of his face and neck, which remained pocked and bruised.

The phrase Plame Affair (also known as the CIA leak scandal, the CIA leak case, the CIA leak grand jury investigation, and Plamegate) refers to the identification of Valerie Plame Wilson as a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer. Mrs. Wilson's relationship with the CIA was classified information. The disclosure was made in a newspaper column entitled "Mission to Niger" written by Robert Novak, and published on July 14, 2003.
Mrs. Wilson's husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, has stated his opinion in various interviews and subsequent writings (as listed in his 2004 memoir The Politics of Truth) that members of former President George W. Bush's administration revealed Mrs. Wilson's covert status as retribution for his op-ed entitled "What I Didn't Find in Africa," published in The New York Times on July 6, 2003.

On November 16, 2005, in an article entitled "Woodward Was Told of Plame More Than Two Years Ago," published in The Washington Post, Jim VandeHei and Carol D. Leonnig revealed that Bob Woodward was told of Valerie Wilson's CIA affiliation a month before it was reported in Robert Novak's column and before Wilson's July 6, 2003 editorial in the New York Times. At an on-the-record dinner at a Harvard University Institute of Politics forum in December 2005, according to the Harvard Crimson, Woodward discussed the matter with fellow Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, responding to Bernstein’s claim that the release of Plame’s identity was a "calculated leak" by the Bush administration with "I know a lot about this, and you’re wrong." The Crimson also states that "when asked at the dinner whether his readers should worry that he has been 'manipulated' by the Bush administration, Woodward replied, 'I think you should worry. I mean, I worry.'"
Although it had been reported in mid-November 2005 that Novak's source was National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, almost a year later media reports revealed that the source of this information was Richard Armitage, which Armitage himself also confirmed.
On February 12, 2007, Woodward testified in "Scooter" Libby's trial as a defense witness. While on the witness stand, an audiotape was played for the jury that contained the interview between Armitage and Woodward in which Plame was discussed. The following exchange is heard on the tape:
WOODWARD: But it was Joe Wilson who was sent by the agency. I mean that's just —
ARMITAGE: His wife works in the agency.
WOODWARD: Why doesn't that come out? Why does —
ARMITAGE: Everyone knows it.
WOODWARD: — that have to be a big secret? Everyone knows.
ARMITAGE: Yeah. And I know Joe Wilson's been calling everybody. He's pissed off because he was designated as a low-level guy, went out to look at it. So, he's all pissed off.
WOODWARD: But why would they send him?
ARMITAGE: Because his wife's a [expletive] analyst at the agency.
WOODWARD: It's still weird.
ARMITAGE: It — It's perfect. This is what she does she is a WMD analyst out there.
WOODWARD: Oh she is.
ARMITAGE: Yeah.
WOODWARD: Oh, I see.
ARMITAGE: Yeah. See?
WOODWARD: Oh, she's the chief WMD?
ARMITAGE: No she isn't the chief, no.
WOODWARD: But high enough up that she can say, "Oh yeah, hubby will go."
ARMITAGE: Yeah, he knows Africa.
