Remarks on the Oklahoma City Bombing

The bombing in Oklahoma City was an attack on innocent children and defenseless citizens. It was an act of cowardice, and it was evil. The United States will not tolerate it. And I will not allow the people of this country to be intimidated by evil cowards.
I have met with our team, which we assembled to deal with this bombing. And I have determined to take the following steps to assure the strongest response to this situation:
First, I have deployed a crisis management team under the leadership of the FBI, working with the Department of Justice, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, military and local authorities. We are sending the world's finest investigators to solve these murders.
Second, I have declared an emergency in Oklahoma City. And at my direction, James Lee Witt, the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is now on his way there to make sure we do everything we can to help the people of Oklahoma deal with the tragedy.
Third, we are taking every precaution to reassure and to protect people who work in or live near other Federal facilities.
Let there be no room for doubt: We will find the people who did this. When we do, justice will be swift, certain, and severe. These people are killers, and they must be treated like killers.

Ladies and gentlemen, during the past 4 years we have made great progress in rebuilding our national defense and in confronting the challenge of effective defense management. Credit rightly goes to our civilian defense leadership, particularly Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. It also goes to our men and women in uniform and to the American people for their support in our efforts.
We've accomplished a great deal, and we have much to be proud of, but there's still a great deal left to do. When our administration began its activities, the problem of defense management we knew would be demanding and difficult, almost as difficult as I had getting that sentence out. [Laughter] There were various barriers to efficient management, including legislative barriers, that stubbornly defied our efforts to remove them. And that's why I appointed an individual with unmatched management credentials when I appointed Cap Weinberger. And while overseeing our much-needed buildup of our defensive strength, Cap has done a tremendous job at ferreting out waste and fraud. That's one of the reasons why you hear about it in the news.
But a public misconception has developed from all of this, a misconception born, at least in part, of a drumbeat of propaganda and demagoguery that denies the real accomplishment of these last 4 years. The situation reminds me of the old saying, "Don't clean the skeletons out of the closet. They'll accuse you of murder."

Mountbatten-Windsor is the personal surname of some of the descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh under an ambiguously-worded Order-in-Council issued in 1960, and as such a cadet branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (known as the House of Glücksburg for short), which in turn is a branch of the House of Oldenburg.

History of the Mountbatten and Windsor surnames
The Mountbatten surname derives from the German town of Battenberg, in Hesse. Prince Louis of Battenberg changed his surname to Mountbatten (its literal English translation) during the First World War at the request of King George V. When then-Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (the royal house of Denmark and Norway and the deposed royal house of Greece) took British citizenship, he used this surname since he descends from the Battenberg family through his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg. It also might be seen as honouring the British Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Prince’s uncle.
The name Windsor was adopted by the British branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1917.

The President. Thank you very much, Al. And hello, ladies and gentlemen. I want to thank you for agreeing to join us on this telephone call today and through this telephone call to speak to the people in your own State and throughout the United States.
One of the things that we are determined to do here in Washington is open the Government to you and never let people forget, who are here making decisions, that you and lives are at stake and that these matters that we discuss and vote upon here really do affect real people out in our country.
So with that, let me just now go from one person to the next and let each of you say something about how this family and medical leave act might affect your life in the future or could have affected your life in the past or the fact that we didn't have it affected you.
[At this point, the President took a series of telephone calls from people who described their personal experiences.]
The President. Ladies and gentlemen, I know I speak for Vice President Gore when I thank all of you for your courage and your support on behalf of your own children and your own families and working families all across this country. We believe that next week, the Congress and the leaders who have worked on this in both parties will help our Nation join the 72 other countries who already have family and medical leave. And if it happens, it will be because of people like you and for people like you.
I think a lot of you said this, but I just want to close with this: It's easy for people to talk about family values, but it's also important for us to value families. And your Government is going to be given a chance to value the American family next week. We hope and pray they'll do it. And if it does happen, you all can claim a lot of the credit.

I arranged for Kerry Burgess and her to meet. Deputy US Marshal Kerry Burgess had been shot in the shoulder by gunfire from a fugitive in 1993 and she was caring for him in the months as he recovered from the injury.
The fugitive was killed by the return gunfire from Deputy US Marshal Kerry Burgess.

Did I really command STS-82 as my final space shuttle mission to date?
I wonder if I created that dialog in the 1996 "Independence Day" about how "Hiller" would not get to fly the space shuttle if he married a stipper because I was planning to launch my final mission to date on 2/11/1997. But the dialog I think is about Kerry Burgess and how he was going to marry a woman who worked as a stripper. I had a consistent and extensive line of thought recently that the woman is Lindsay Dawn Mackenzie but then I looked her age and she seems too young. Her age could be wrong though and to make her look a couple years younger.

I was thinking later that as Thomas Reagan, I was introducing Kerry Burgess to women that my talent agency represents and Mackenzie was one of the women he was dating. I have no idea why this all contradicts my memory.
But then, yes, I do understand: I don't have the true memory of Kerry Burgess because I am not Kerry Burgess. I am living the life of a version of Kerry Burgess that I constructed from his real life and from a cover story I created for him. It is no different than these other people I write about, just that Kerry Burgess did not have a public persona.

She is from Britain, too, I vaguely recall reading a long time ago. That would make sense that I would set up Kerry Burgess with her around the time of the 1994 "Princess Caraboo" and especially important the film "Timecop" that premiered the same day and with his wife's confusion about why he looked older than he should. I also recall that Mackenzie started off as a "Page 2" girl which is something about a newspaper in Britain that has a photo at different times of a woman with her bare chest exposed and so that makes even more sense.

FBI seizes tyrannosaurus bones in custody battle/Indians in S. Dakota say fossil is theirs

Acting on a complaint by leaders of an Indian tribe who say a private company had illegally taken fossils from tribal land, federal agents in South Dakota have seized the largest and best-preserved tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever found.
The seizure ignited a struggle involving the Justice Department, Indian leaders, scientists, a large fossil-dealer and many dinosaur enthusiasts.
The dispute centers on ownership of the remains of the dinosaur, which in life would have been more than 50 feet long.
Though such fossils are worth nothing in the ground, an important fossil like the South Dakota dinosaur could bring several million dollars, particularly from a museum abroad, paleontologists said.
More important, from the paleontologists' point of view, the specimen offers rare opportunities to learn more about the tyrannosaurus rex. Though care was taken in packing the bones, they said, they feared the bones might be damaged in the move.
Early Thursday, 30 FBI officials, under orders from U.S. Attorney Kevin Schieffer, sealed off the premises of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, S.D.
They packed up the gigantic bones along with the company's files, photographs and specimens relating to the dinosaur.
Although paleontologists frequently criticize commercialized fossil collecting, many prominent paleontologist say the Black Hills Institute takes great care to preserve scientific assets and makes them available to scholars.

GOVERNMENT SEIZES SKELETON OF DINOSAUR
RAPID CITY, S.D. - The U.S. government has seized the world's largest and best-preserved tyrannosaurus rex skeleton after an Indian tribe charged that the dinosaur bones were illegally excavated.
Thirty FBI agents last week sealed off the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City and took three days to pack up the bones.
The institute excavated the dinosaur in 1990, paying Maurice Williams $5,000 for the right to dig on his land on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation and to keep whatever it found.
However, Williams' land is held in trust by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, which means he needs federal permission to sell antiquities found there. Tribal leaders charged that he did not have such permission.

Company Loses Fight For Custody Of Fossil -- `Sue' In Warehouse Until Ownership Settled

A Tyrannosaurus rex named Sue will not go home to the private company that excavated her, a South Dakota federal judge ruled yesterday.
The ruling ended a three-day custody hearing over the world's largest T. rex fossil, named for Susan Hendrickson, the Mercer Island archaeologist and diver who discovered her.
Black Hills Institute, a fossil-hunting company, sought custody of the dinosaur during litigation about her ownership. In addition to the company, both the federal government and the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation claim rights to the most complete T. rex fossil ever found.
In making his ruling, Judge Richard H. Battey rejected testimony that the dinosaur, now stored at the South Dakota School of Mines, is infected with a "fossil cancer." Witnesses for Black Hills testified last week that unless the fossil is removed from storage and treated, pyrite crystals growing in the fossil could weaken or break it.
Underlying the clamor over Sue's disputed bones is a fundamental disagreement over the ethics of fossil hunting. Black Hills Institute members and their allies in museums across the country argue that science depends on commercial hunters.
But increasingly, government lands officials point to the meteoric cost of fossils to say that profit-driven hunting is stealing a precious resource from the public. If the trend continues, they say, only the rich will be able to enjoy fossils.
"There is nothing more thrilling than seeing a fossil in its natural setting," said John Donaldson, chief ranger at Badlands National Park.

LOS ANGELES -- Mounting evidence links former football star O.J. Simpson to the slayings of his former wife and a man who was a waiter at a trendy Brentwood restaurant, Los Angeles police sources said Tuesday.
Much of the investigation Tuesday was focused on bloodstains -- both at Simpson's Brentwood mansion and at his former wife's townhouse two miles away, where the crime was committed late Sunday.
Police officers also combed Simpson's Tudor-style home for clues, taking away a pair of running shoes and towing a Ford Bronco parked outside.
Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, and Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25, were stabbed to death Sunday night
Police said Tuesday that Nicole Simpson and Goldman, a waiter at a Brentwood restaurant she frequented, were not linked romantically. Friends said he apparently was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, returning a pair of glasses she had left at the restaurant, when the attack occurred.
Neither the coroner's office nor police would release further details about the nature of the stab wounds or the weapons used to inflict them, but a source close to the investigation said the woman's throat was slashed and Goldman's wounds

Whoever violates any provision of section 1962 of this chapter shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years (or for life if the violation is based on a racketeering activity for which the maximum penalty includes life imprisonment), or both, and shall forfeit to the United States, irrespective of any provision of State law—
(1) any interest the person has acquired or maintained in violation of section 1962;
(2) any—
(A) interest in;
(B) security of;
(C) claim against; or
(D) property or contractual right of any kind affording a source of influence over;
any enterprise which the person has established, operated, controlled, conducted, or participated in the conduct of, in violation of section 1962; and
(3) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds which the person obtained, directly or indirectly, from racketeering activity or unlawful debt collection in violation of section 1962.

(a) Whoever, when the United States is at war, willfully makes or conveys false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies; or Whoever, when the United States is at war, willfully causes or attempts to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or willfully obstructs the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States, to the injury of the service or the United States, or attempts to do so— Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.
(b) If two or more persons conspire to violate subsection (a) of this section and one or more such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be punished as provided in said subsection (a).
(c) Whoever harbors or conceals any person who he knows, or has reasonable grounds to believe or suspect, has committed, or is about to commit, an offense under this section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.
(d) This section shall apply within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States, and on the high seas, as well as within the United States.
