I just had another dream about flying a jet in combat. I seemed to be in an F-14 Tomcat but after waking up, I think that was actually an F-4 Phantom I was flying and it was during the Vietnam War. The details are kind of fuzzy but I seemed to hear radio transmissions from other pilots in my group and at least two of them were under fire and had been shot down. I think more had been shot down that day. Then I was on the ground and I found myself with another pilot in my group and we were hiding on the side of a small hill near a small creek. I think we had heard gunfire and we were going to investigate it for some reason. Then a couple of kids appeared at the top of the hill and one had a pistol and was shooting at us. We ran off and split up and the other pilot looked to be running to cross the bridge while I was running to go under it. I told him before we split up that someone was running towards us with an AK-47 rifle. I could visualize my hands as I was grasping at vegatation as I was trying to get away but I was not getting away fast enough and the soldier with the AK-47 caught up to and I stood there anticipating getting shot in the chest with the rifle. The soldier looked at me though and then quickly turned around and began running in the other direction and in the dream, I was aware that the soldier was going after the other pilot, instead of me, for some reason. That is all I remember from the dream.

I had a very clear dream about being out to sea but the progress of the events seem to be somewhat out of sequence. I have been thinking about it after waking up and I feel it is important to note that certain events happened out of sequence in the dream and I cannot now remember the sequence as I dreamed, although the sequence of events that are out of order might only span a matter of hours. One reason that seemed important after I woke up is that I was thinking I had been flying an F-14 Tomcat during that event, because that notion was strong in my mind during one dream sequence of events, but then I seemed to be dreaming that I had actually been in an A-6 Intruder.

So anyway, I feel certain the dream sequence started off with me floating in the ocean and I had been in the water for at least two days and there was some concern in my mind about sharks.

Then I noticed a ship was approaching and I was waving my arms to get their attention but I think they had already spotted me and they were approaching me to extract me from the water and they were coming so close I thought they were going to run over me.
There is also something wrong with the proportions in that dream as well, in that the ship seemed a lot smaller than it should be, or something like that. I feel certain it was a Ticonderoga-class cruiser so that would mean, if that really was the class of U.S. Navy ship, that the dream occurred during the 1980's or later. I had no other sense of time and date to the dream.

I remember something about identifying the bow structure of the ship and that was how I knew it was a Ticonderoga but after waking up, I have been wondering why I cannot remember other identifying details about the Ticonderoga-class, such as that large, distinctive forward superstructure or whether it had a rail-launcher or the absence of the rail-launcher, indicating it was one of the later VLS versions.

After the ship pulled past me as I floated in the ocean, I saw a Seahawk helo lift off from the deck, seemingly from the bow, which is odd, and then it was approaching me and I was anticipating it is winch me up as it hovered over me. Another odd detail is that it actually seemed to land, although I cannot visualize it landing, impossibly, on the ocean surface, but I recall that detail because I noted that the tail rotors almost hit me.

Then I was in the ship and I seemed to be in CIC, judging by all the equipment and I was sitting in chair and I was still wearing wet clothes. I can visualize one person that was talking to me more than anyone else but I cannot visualize enough detail about him to describe.
It seems it was then in the dream that I started to dream, or to think, about the events that led to me being in the ocean. I still feel a certain amount of confusion as to whether I dreamed it all in sequence as it occurred, in that this all is probably a true experience I was dreaming about, or whether I dreamed it in the sequence as I am not writing.

As some point in the dream, and that seems to be associated to other events in this dream sequence, I was flying in the B/N seat of an A-6 Intruder and something happened, that I never did seem to know about in the dream, and I was going to have to eject, along with the pilot. At some point since waking up, I am aware that the pilot did not survive and I recall that I never did see him again in the dream. So I don't know what happened and why we had to eject but certain details seem unrealistic, even though I can still visualize sitting there in that B/N seat. One detail is that I was not wearing any kind of harness or belt and after what ever event it was that made us eject, I pulled across an automobile seatbelt and I can still visualize clipping it in.

I think that was just before I noted that I seemed to be sitting in some kind of high-back desk chair and that I pulled the lever that caused the seat back to un-recline, or whatever is the proper word, and the seat back was actually causing me to lean forward.
Then when I, or we, as I can only recally myself ejecting, and similar to scenes in "Top Gun" and "Flight of the Intruder," but with different results, I was blasted through the plexiglass canopy and it shattered as I was blasted through it. I did not seem to suffer any injuries from going through the canopy and I ponder every time over that scene in "Flight of the Intruder.
I think that was the extent of my dream. I think then the dream picks up with me floating in the ocean for at least 2 days and a USN ship rescuing me.

I had a very clear dream of me back in uniform and given a new assignment on a base. I can remember seeing that I was wearing the USN Captain insignia on my khakis. I walked into a room where a change of command was going on. I'm not sure if I was told this in the dream or if I am assuming that is what's happening. I know or assume that the two officer's in the change of command were subordinate officers to me and that they were Commander's. Their command was a subordinate command to mine. I remember from the dream shaking hands with one of them and introducing myself as Captain. I can't remember the name I gave her but I think I said Captain Thomas Ray. There is also some kind of element to that part of the dream; something about it seeming silly to introduce myself by stating my rank because that was obvious or I was stating the obvious. And another unusual part was that they wouldn't tell me which one of them was taking command during that ceremony and which one was relinquishing command. I felt comfortable being back in that role, but yet, I felt as though I was still missing a few too many pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is my mind, for my comfort. I probably serve better now for a while as an independent operative rather than an officer in charge of a large command where subordinates have certain expectations of their Captain.

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet released the below statement surrounding the damage assessment of the USS George Washington (CVN 73) following a fire at sea on Thursday, May 22:
Navy officials have nearly completed a comprehensive damage assessment following the shipboard fire aboard George Washington that occurred on May 22 while at sea. The source of the fire has not yet been determined, but the fire was located in a ventilation intake/exhaust trunk that led from the lower decks of the ship to a ventilation port on the ship's outer hull several decks above. In addition to providing a ventilation path for non-critical machinery components that are located below the ship's waterline, the trunk has numerous piping and cabling runs located within it.
Damage to USS George Washington is primarily electrical in nature with some associated structural and mechanical repairs required. Fire and heat affected electrical cabling and components running through approximately 80 spaces of the more than 3800 total spaces on the carrier. The heat generated by the fire damaged a small portion of interior structural plating which will require either repair or replacement. Piping and related valves that were exposed to heat from the fire have been inspected and will require a minimal amount of repairs. Electrical cables in the vicinity of the intake/exhaust trunk were damaged and will require repair and in some cases, replacement.

Due to budgetary constraints, the Marines bowed out early in the development cycle. The first Mohawk (YAO-1) prototype flew on April 14, 1959. The OV-1 entered production in October 1959 and served the US Army in Europe, Korea, the Vietnam War, Central and South America, Alaska, and during DesertShield/Desert Storm in the Middle East.

Training Saves Lives During Ship's Fire

USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- Firefighting training was put to the test on USS George Washington (CVN 73)(GW) when fires broke out on the ship the morning of May 22, trapping four Sailors for more than four hours and causing damage to various departments in the area of the blaze.
Almost immediately, the crew went to "General Quarters" a state of alert in which everyone has a defined role to protect the ship in an emergency situation.
Engineering Department's Senior Chief Damage Controlman(SW/AW) Dwight Hill discussed the value of the training the crew receive to protect the ship in such an incident.
"Instinct took over, our training kicked in, everything was done expeditiously," said Hill. "All that went through my mind were my Sailors that were trapped, making sure they knew we were trying. That was my motivating factor."
Extensive efforts were involved to rescue the four Sailors in question, including maintaining communication.
Electrician's Mate Fireman Jase Exum, one of the four Sailors trapped, said the lack of communication in the beginning is what scared him the most.
"I tried to use the sound-powered telephones, but I could not tell if anyone was hearing me," he said. "When the captain got on the 1MC (shipwide announcing system), it was a relief, knowing they knew we were still alive, and they were still out there trying to get to us."
Exum said that the training he had received helped him to remain calm.
"I really did not know what was going to happen, but I was the only one of the four of us that were trapped to go to Damage Control school," Exum said. "I explained what was happening around us, why they lit off fire extinguishing agents to keep us safe. I was trained as a Damage Controlman and I was really glad that I was because that knowledge kept me calm. We could have put ourselves in a lot worse danger if I didn't know certain things -- should we go now, should we wait, should we try to make it up on our own."
The word "shipmate" was used and remembered throughout the day.

King-TV Gets Radar

KING-TV (Channel 5) will begin using its own Doppler weather radar system during newscasts on March 14.
The station tomorrow will begin promoting a new identity, "First Alert Weather," to accompany the Doppler system, which can measure, and render electronically, moisture content in the air hundreds of miles away.
"The big advantage of KING having their own radar is it's controllable," Mass said. But as a pure forecasting tool, NEXRAD's local presence "lessens the value" of KING's system.
Chris Hill, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Seattle, agreed KING's radar is somewhat redundant as a forecasting tool.
KING will buy NEXRAD's images, too, said Jeff Renner, Channel 5's chief meteorologist. But having its own Doppler system will allow KING to put a live radar image on the air, zoom in on areas of interest to viewers and show renderings of data not available through the commercial NEXRAD services, he said.

As a child, Robert Montgomery enjoyed a privileged life, as his father was the president of the New York Rubber Co. When he died, the fortune was gone and Robert worked at a number of jobs. He later went to New York to be a writer, and on the advice of a friend tried acting. He worked with George Cukor on the stage and his first film, at MGM, was So This Is College (1929). When Norma Shearer picked him to be her leading man in Private Lives (1931), he was set. He played many likable characters over the years, covering the gamut from very poor to very rich. In 1935, he became President of the Screen Actors Guild. His stay with MGM lasted 16 years, and was only interrupted by WWII when he joined the navy. He saw action in both Europe and the Pacific. He returned to MGM in 1945 and co-starred with John Wayne in the John Ford-directed They Were Expendable (1945) and then made his directorial debut with Lady in the Lake (1947) (although he had directed a few scenes, uncredited, in They Were Expendable (1945) when John Ford took ill). He then left MGM to become an independent director, preferring work behind the camera instead of in front. He was a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities in 1947 during the McCarthy era and then spent most of his time on television and stage. His popular show, "Robert Montgomery Presents" (1950), was where daughter Elizabeth Montgomery (who later gained fame as beautiful witch Samantha on TV's popular "Bewitched" (1964)) got her first acting job.

In 1944, Capt. Josiah J. Newman is the doctor in charge of Ward 7, the neuropsychiatric ward, at an Army Air Corps hospital in Arizona. The hospital is under-resourced and Newman scrounges what he needs with the help of his inventive staff, especially Cpl. Jake Leibowitz. The military in general is only just coming to accept psychiatric disorders as legitimate and Newman generally has 6 weeks to cure them or send them on to another facility. There are many patients in the ward and his latest include Colonel Norville Bliss who has dissociated from his past; Capt. Paul Winston who is nearly catatonic after spending 13 months hiding in a cellar behind enemy lines; and 20 year-old Cpl. Jim Tompkins who is severely traumatized after his aircraft was shot down. Others come and go, including Italian prisoners of war, but Newman and team all realize that their success means the men will return to their units and combat.
