Doctor WEIR: This Chair controls the most powerful weapons known to humankind. I'm afraid of the thing. But every time someone sits in it we learn something new about the Ancients who built this outpost. Doctor Beckett should be proud he's genetically advanced.

McKAY: It's not more advanced. It-it is a random characteristic.

WEIR: This really bothers you, this whole gene thing, huh?!

McKAY (sarcastically): Oh, clearly I am overcome with envy.

Memorable quotes for

The Final Countdown (1980)

Lasky: Think of the history of the next forty years...

Commander Richard Owens: I have a suspicion history will be a little more difficult to beat, than you imagine Mr. Lasky.

Lasky: I'm talking about the classic paradox of time. Imagine, for example, I go back in time and meet my own Grandfather. Long before he got married, before he had children. And we have an argument, and I kill him. Now if that happens, how am I ever going to be born? And if I can never be born, how can I go back in history and meet my very own Grandfather?

Commander Richard Owens: [angrily] I'm not half the theorist you are, Mr. Lasky. But I still have a gut instinct that things only happen once. And if they have happened, then there's nothing we can do to change them. Nor should we try.

Lasky: Well, how are you going to avoid it? It's already happening, and we're already involved!

Commander Dan Thurman: For Christ's sake! What is this, some half-assed Princeton debating society?

Anything Left Handed

Anything Left-Handed > Left Handers Club

The Left Handers Club

In 1989 a we undertook a major survey of our customers to determine their degree of left-handedness and allow them to put their views and experiences. From the enormous response to this Survey, it became clear that many left-handers wanted a forum to discuss aspects of left-handedness on a continuing basis.

To meet this need, the Left-Handers Club was formed in 1990. The Left-Handers Club aims to keep members in touch with developments, make their views known to manufacturers and others, provide a help and advice line, to promote research into left-handedness and development of new left-handed items.

Since its formation the Club has gone from strength to strength with members all over the world and is highly regarded as the foremost pressure group and advice centre on all aspects of left-handedness. Most notably, campaigns by the Left-Handers Club have been responsible for:

The modification of potentially dangerous hand-held power tools by a major manufacturer

The introduction of left-handed cheque books by all major banks in the U.K.

The production of the only training video for teachers & parents of left-handed children to show the best way to assist them in attaining the vital basic skills of handwriting, cutting etc. without difficulty or discomfort.

On 13th August 1992 the Club launched International Left-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there were over 20 regional events to mark the day in 2001- including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!

These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority – although there is still a long way to go!!

Operation Diamond

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Diamond was an operation undertaken by the Mossad. Its goal was the acquisition of a Soviet-built Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, the most advanced Soviet fighter plane at that time. The operation began in mid-1963 and ended on August 16, 1966, when an Iraqi Air Force MiG-21, flown by the Iraqi Assyrian defector Munir Redfa, landed at an air base in Israel. Israel and the United States were able to study the design of the plane.

RADAR RAVEN MAY GET CREDIT FOR 1ST AIR KILL OF THE GULF WAR

Published: Friday, Feb. 22 1991 12:00 a.m. MST

The electronics-jamming EF-111A Raven is not a combat plane. But a Raven that lured an Iraqi fighter into a death trap may be credited with the first air kill of the war.

The U.S. Air Force is investigating whether the two-man crew of the EF-111A will go down in history for destroying an Iraqi F-1 Mirage minutes after the war began on Jan. 17.Capt. Brent D. Brandon, 30, of Houston, the plane's electronic warfare officer, said the Iraqi fighter rolled in a mile or so behind the EF-111A near an airfield in western Iraq and fired a missile directly at its clear canopy.

"I actually saw the missile snaking," Brandon said Thursday.

The American jet immediately dove to within a few hundred feet of the ground and released chaff and decoy flares to try to divert the heat-seeking missile from its engines.

At the same time, the pilot, Capt. Jim Denton, accelerated toward the speed of sound and made a hard right banking turn, Brandon said.

The Iraqi fighter couldn't match the maneuver.

"And that's when we see the fireball behind us ... as the guy hit the ground," Brandon said.

Those early morning hours of Jan. 17 are etched in Brandon's memory.

Scars

Lately I have also started to understand that scars on my body are not what I remember.

There is the scar on my hand that I used to think was from scraping it on concrete one night when I was drunk and could not drive so I had to go through a bad neighborhood while walking to my apartment 7 miles away from the bar I had been at. I have started thinking that the reality is that I was tortured as a POW and the scar is from someone using a power drill on my hand.

The scar on my right wrist isn't the burn I recieved from someone dropping hot apple pie on it when I was a kid in a day care center, rather...I'm not really sure what it is. I have been thinking it is a shrapnel wound from anti-aircraft artillery. When I think of this I think of two scenes from two movies. One is that scene in "Memphis Belle" where the tomato soup container explodes and they wonder who was hit.

What was my jersey number when I played little league? That was before I started playing football. I think it was '10' but not sure. I played for the team in De Queen that was sponsored by the Mountaire chicken plant. I don't remember anyone ever kidding us about that though. I also remember our first game beating the other team that was considered the best to play for. I think they were the Rotary Lions. I used to always get on base because no one could pitch to left-handers and I would either get hit or get walked.

CHAIR ROOM.

BECKETT: They think the gene was used as a sort of genetic key, if you will, so that only their kind could operate certain dangerous and powerful technologies.

(He turns away from the Chair. Behind him, Sheppard pokes at the arm control panels tentatively.)

fSHEPPARD: So some people have the same genes as these Ancients. (He walks around the Chair.)

BECKETT: The specific gene is very rare, but on the whole they look very much like we do. In fact they were first. We're the second evolution of this form, the Ancients having explored this galaxy for millions of years before ... Major, please don't.

(Sheppard has started to sit down in the Chair.)

SHEPPARD: Come on -- what are the odds of me having the same genes as these guys?

(As he sits down, the Chair immediately lights up and reclines. Both he and Beckett stare in amazement.)

BECKETT: Quite slim, actually. (Shouting out) Doctor Weir! (He looks at Sheppard.) Don't move.

(He hurries off. Sheppard lies in the Chair, looking upwards nervously.)

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. Beckett and the others run back to the Chair. Weir stops and looks at Sheppard.

WEIR: Who is this?

(O'Neill walks up onto the dais and looks down at Sheppard.)

O'NEILL: I said don't touch anything.

SHEPPARD: I-I just sat down.

McKAY: Major, think about where we are in the solar system.

(A holographic three dimensional map of a star system appears above Sheppard's head. Everyone gazes up at it. Weir smiles in delight. Sheppard looks up at the map, frowning.)

SHEPPARD: Did I do that?

[ Opening scene of the first episode of the television series ]

SEVERAL MILLION YEARS AGO.

A small spaceship flies over the top of clouds. As it reaches the edge of the clouds, we see a large star-shaped city on the ground, surrounded by what looks like a forcefield. Inside the city, a man and a woman dressed in futuristic-looking clothes stand at a window watching the ship approach, then turn and gaze at each other. The woman is Ayiana, last seen in the SG-1 episode "Frozen." Outside the window, the small ship bursts through the forcefield and comes in to land. The man and Ayiana gaze at each other for a moment longer, then the man turns and walks away. Ayiana watches him go, a look of longing or loss on her face.

After a few moments she turns to look out of the window again. Behind her we see an Ancient Control Chair, the same one that Jack O'Neill used to fight off Anubis's fleet in the SG-1 episode "Lost City." Outside, the city begins to rise into the air, leaving behind only the area that Ayiana is standing in. Once clear of the central area, engines kick in and the city shoots up into the sky. A shockwave of snow and ice rolls towards the camera and envelops it.

ANTARCTICA: PRESENT DAY.

As the snow clears, we see a small dome and outbuildings in Antarctica. The view moves inside the dome and an elevator descends down to the level where the Control Chair was found. The elevator arrives and we see a hive of activity in a large area carved out of the rock. Many scientists are working down there. As the doors to the elevator open, a little way away we see a man working on an unused attack drone from amongst those which took down Anubis's fleet. Doctor Elizabeth Weir, formerly Head of Stargate Command, comes out of the elevator and a scientist hands a computer pad to her.

VOICE OVER TANNOY: This is Operations. General O'Neill is en route. Twenty minutes out.

(Doctor Weir walks across the room. The man working on the drone, Doctor Peter Grodin, an Englishman, looks up and sees her.)

GRODIN: Doctor Weir.

WEIR: Peter.

(She writes something on the computer pad, puts it down and walks over to the Control Chair. Doctor Carson Beckett, a Scottish man, is sitting in the Chair with Doctor Rodney McKay standing beside him.)

BECKETT: You see? Nothing. (He gets out of the Chair and starts to walk away.)

McKAY: Carson. Get back here.

BECKETT: I could sit in that chair all bloody day long and nothing would happen. It's a waste of time. Excuse me, Doctor Weir. (He walks away.)

McKAY (to Weir): He's not even trying.

WEIR: But he's the one who discovered the gene this technology responds to.

McKAY: Yeah, well, he said he wished he never had it.

WEIR: Really?

McKAY (incredulously): I know, can you believe that?

(Weir smiles.)

WEIR: We could always test you a third time, Rodney.

McKAY (annoyed): That's very funny.

WEIR: We've only found a handful of people who are genetically compatible with the Ancient technology and despite your heroic efforts to interface ours with theirs, we need every one of them to sit in this Chair, including Doctor Beckett.

McKAY: What am I supposed to do? He's afraid of that thing.

WEIR: This Chair controls the most powerful weapons known to humankind. I'm afraid of the thing.

The Text Message

No Enemy Contact, but Alien Contact…

june 6, 2011 by textmessageguest, posted in military records, vietnam war

Today’s post is written by Joe Gillette, a processing archivist at Archives II.

During the Vietnam War, American army commands maintained daily journals documenting assorted events. Most entries were relatively mundane, documenting staff meetings, personnel travel, incoming or outgoing messages, and the like. Some were more administratively significant, such as changes in command, the awarding of medals, or the filing of reports. Naturally, many contain descriptions of combat against the enemy.

Then there are entries that more closely resemble an episode of the X-Files than a war movie.

One such entry appears in the January 6, 1969 daily journal of the 23rd Infantry Division’s Chu Lai Defense Command. The command’s mission was to coordinate ground defense of the Chu Lai Defense Sector on the Vietnamese coast about 40 miles southeast of Da Nang. Base defenses included a system of numbered observation towers ringing the base. Towers routinely reported anything unusual or potentially threatening to the base. At 0152 hours (1:52 am), the day’s journal records Tower 72 making such a report:

Twr 72 rpts object flying into their area about 700m infront [sic] of them, AZ 310°. Object came in slow over the ASP & landed. When object moves it has a glowing light. It is about 15 – 20 ft across. It is shaped like a big egg. Control twr rpts their radar did not pick anything up. Object also does not seem to have any sound to it when it moves.

The only logged follow-up action was notification of the Duty Officer. Subsequent journals provide no further information on the incident. Peculiarly (if one is conspiratorially-inclined), the journals for the next two days, January 7 & 8, are missing.

Possible conventional explanations for the sighting exist. Tracer rounds and flares both create illumination. But tracer rounds don’t float to the ground and certainly aren’t shaped like an “egg”, and flares might float to the ground, but aren’t egg shaped either. Additionally, drug use by soldiers, particularly by 1969, was a known problem in Vietnam. But two or more soldiers typically manned these towers. Assuming this was a drug-induced vision, it’s difficult to imagine they each experienced the same hallucination, although if they were observing something they could not readily identify, one might have convinced the others they were seeing a UFO. Boredom too could have resulted in a bout of creative storytelling, but if discovered, the soldiers risked disciplinary action. So while potential conventional explanations exist for both the sighting and the report, nothing in the journals tells us which of those might have been at work.

The truth may be out there, but it isn’t in these records.
