I had something similar to that when I was a kid. Some cheap trinket Thedia must have bought for me (as some sort of bribe) back in the year 1975 or 1976. We lived in that dumpy trailer park outside DeQueen Arkansas next to where the DeQueen Drive-in theatre used to exist, replaced now by a Walmart.

The founding of the American Civil Liberties Union, 1920

Posted on August 1, 2012 by Christa Cleeton

This is the first part in a series that was introduced earlier.

World War I ended on November 11, 1918, but the repression of civil liberties continued unabated. The most well-known event was the so-called “Palmer Raids,” which actually involved two sets of federal mass arrests of alleged radicals, in November 1919 and early January 1920. The leaders of the NCLB began thinking about transforming the organization into a permanent one devoted to the defense of civil liberties. The key person was Roger Baldwin, who was convicted of violating the Selective Service Act in October 1918 and sent to prison. After his release in the summer of 1919, he made a cross country trip to work as an industrial laborer. Upon his return to New York in late 1919 he began the planning for the new organization, which was established as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in January 1920.

This undated and unsigned memorandum, Suggestions for Reorganization of the National Civil Liberties Bureau, was probably written by Roger Baldwin (see his initials in the upper right hand corner), probably in late 1919. It represent his thoughts on reorganizing the National Civil Liberties Bureau into a permanent civil liberties organization. Note that in the first paragraph the primary focus is on working people (“the cause we serve is labor”). No name for a permanent organization is suggested at this time. When the ACLU is officially constituted, it is evident that discussions about the agenda for a national organization had expanded to include a broader range of civil liberties issues.

This undated memorandum by Roger Baldwin was probably written in early January 1920 and summarizes the work of the NCLB from October 1917 to January 1920. It was undoubtedly written as part of the discussions to reconstitute the NCLB into a permanent civil liberties organization.

The decision to create the American Civil Liberties Union is recorded in these Minutes of the Conference to Reorganize the National Civil Liberties Bureau, January 12, 1920.

The Minutes of the National Committee of the American Civil Liberties Union, January 19, 1920, represent the first official meeting of the ACLU.

OPENING CREDITS

EXT—LANDSCAPE OF AN INDUSTRIAL CITY

INT—A MUSEUM

[The screen shows the caption THREE MONTHS AGO. A guide is speaking to a group of tourists.]

GUIDE
First discovered in the Curillian wastelands over one hundred and fifty years ago, and the highlight of our antiquities collection…the Great Ring of Avidan.

[The camera moves up to a window, through which we see a Stargate in the courtyard outside. The guide leads the tourist outside.]

GUIDE
Researchers estimate the ring to be at least several thousand years old. And, while its origin remains a subject of debate, many believe it was created by ancient worshippers to honor their gods. It's thought that the peculiar symbols on the Ring itself represent the names of the gods, however no one has been able to decipher—

[He is cut off by the Stargate beginning to activate, the inner ring turning.]

GUIDE
—exactly what they mean.

[As the chevrons engage the people back away, gasping and murmuring. After the wormhole appears, one is hear to mutter, 'Is that part of the exhibit?' A MALP comes through the wormhole. A military man points a rifle at it.]

[The scene blends forward in time to show an official delegation waiting. Carter, Daniel, and Teal'c appear from the event horizon.]

CARTER
Commander Gareth.

GARETH
In the name of the people of the Rand Protectorate, I welcome you. You're Colonel Carter?

CARTER
(nodding)
This is Teal'c, and Doctor Daniel Jackson.

GARETH
It is a pleasure to finally meet you all face to face. But please come; we have many questions, as I'm sure you do as well.

[They begin to walk.]

CARTER
Sorry about scaring the tourists. We've made first contact with a lot of planets, but this is the first time we've found ourselves coming out of a museum piece.

Cold War: Great Seal Exhibit

On August 4, 1945, Soviet school children gave a carving of the Great Seal of the United States to U.S. Ambassador Averell Harriman. It hung in the ambassador's Moscow residential office until 1952 when the State Department discovered that it was 'bugged.'

The microphone hidden inside was passive and only activated when the Soviets wanted it to be. They shot radio waves from a van parked outside into the ambassador's office and could then detect the changes of the microphone's diaphragm inside the resonant cavity. When Soviets turned off the radio waves it was virtually impossible to detect the hidden 'bug.' The Soviets were able to eavesdrop on the U.S. ambassador's conversations for six years.

The replica on display in the museum was molded from the original after it came to NSA for testing. The exhibit can be opened to reveal a copy of the microphone and the resonant cavity inside.

GARETH
One of our artifacts suddenly coming to life was a little surprising, but that pales in comparison to its purpose. It is almost beyond imagining.

KANE
As is the fact that you're human.

GARETH
My chief aide: Jared Kane.

DANIEL
Well, believe it or not, there's actually a good reason for us being human.

CARTER
Which we'll get to in due time.

GARETH
Colonel, I hope that once we gain each other's trust, you'll be able to shed some light on the technology that powers the Great Ring. It is unlike anything we have seen before.

CARTER
We call it the Stargate, and our people share the same hope, Commander.

GARETH
Of course. In due time.

DANIEL
(gesturing toward the people wearing necklaces with ring-shaped pendants)
I take it the Great Ring is a recurring motif in your culture.

GARETH
It is simply a reminder of certain traditions that pre-date our age of enlightenment. Most people wear them more for the sake of fashion than for religious belief.

KANE
Our history tells of an age when all powerful Gods ruled our world. The Great Ring was supposedly the source of their power.

GARETH
Of course, we know these are merely legends from our ancient past. However the activation of the Ring may well cause a stir amongst those few who still follow the old ways.

Bosnian Serbs, Government OK Cease-Fire : Balkans: Disputes over wording postpone truce a day. Release of prisoners delayed.

December 24, 1994 From Associated Press

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Bosnia's Serbs and the Muslim-led government agreed to a pause in their war beginning today, but the deal fell short of what former U.S. President Jimmy Carter had hoped for.

Fighting appeared to ebb across Bosnia on Friday, and the United Nations reported no civilian casualties. The rebel Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, said his troops will hold their fire unless fired at, even before the weeklong truce begins at noon today (3 a.m. PST), the Bosnian Serb news agency SRNA reported.

Carter left Sarajevo this week after getting both sides to agree to a four-month truce that was supposed to begin Friday. But talks bogged down as Yasushi Akashi, the U.N. chief for the former Yugoslavia, tried to work out details.

The Serbs and the government agreed in principle to a four-month truce, and they were to use the cease-fire starting today to work out the longer truce.

Until a comprehensive, four-month truce is reached, there will be no discussions about an international peace plan that is supposed to be the basis of their talks. The plan would require the Serbs to reduce their holdings in Bosnia to 49% from the 70% they now occupy.

Bosnia's government wants the Serbs to agree to the plan, which the Serbs repeatedly have rejected, before talking about any modifications. The Serbs want to talk without first approving the plan.

Even in agreeing to the brief truce, the two sides refused to sign the same document. Both documents called for the cease-fire, but had different language regarding the release of prisoners and information about missing persons. That meant there would be no quick release of thousands of prisoners of war that Carter said had been agreed to.

Both sides took out a sentence referring to future negotiations on the international peace plan because they could not settle on the wording.

"Semantics sometimes acquires its own momentum and tends to become a monster," said Akashi.

INT—SGC BRIEFING ROOM

[The screen shows the caption TWO MONTHS AGO. Daniel is at a graphic showing the nations of the planet as O'Neill, Carter, and Teal'c enter and sit down at the end of the briefing room table.]

O'NEILL
How'd it go with the uh…

DANIEL
Caledonians? Not so well, actually. My time with their representatives was severely limited by the Rand security forces. Apparently Gareth had nation security concerns. Mainly that we'd tell the Caledonians too much about the Stargate.

O'NEILL
Let me venture a wild guess. They don't get along so good.

DANIEL
The Rand Protectorate and the Caledonian Federation have been locked in a state of cold war for decades. Each nation has enough weapons to wipe each other off the face of the planet.

CARTER
Sounds depressingly familiar.

DANIEL
There's actually a third element which has me a little more concerned. Uh, a group of religious fundamentalists led by a man named Soren. Now these people think that all life on the planet was created by ancient gods, and that these gods will someday return and reward them for their faith.

CARTER
And, by coming through the Stargate, we confirmed their beliefs.

DANIEL
Because the 'Gate was activated in a public place, the Rand government has been unable to prevent the rumors from spreading. Now before we made contact with them, these people were considered zealots who took the ancient texts too literally. The 'Gate being activated has given them all the need to prove that they were right all along. Their numbers will grow.

O'NEILL
(flippantly)
That's terrible. And yet, not our problem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslav_Wars

Yugoslav Wars

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yugoslav Wars were a series of ethnically-based wars and insurgencies fought from 1991 to 2001 inside the territory of the former Yugoslavia. These wars accompanied and/or facilitated the breakup of the Yugoslav state, when its constituent republics declared independence, but the issues of ethnic minorities in the new countries (chiefly Serbs, Croats and Albanians) were still unresolved at the time the republics were recognized internationally. The wars are generally considered to be a series of separate but related military conflicts which occurred in, and affected, most of the former Yugoslav republics.

The wars (with some exceptions) ended through peace accords, involving full international recognition of new states, but with massive economic damage to the region. Initially the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) sought to preserve the unity of the whole of Yugoslavia by crushing the secessionist governments but it increasingly came under the influence of the Serbian government of Slobodan Miloševic that evoked Serbian nationalist rhetoric and was willing to support the Yugoslav state insofar as using it to preserve the unity of Serbs in one state. As a result, the JNA began to lose Slovenes, Croats, Kosovar Albanians, Bosniaks, and ethnic Macedonians, and effectively became a Serb army. According to the 1994 United Nations report, the Serb side did not aim to restore Yugoslavia, but to create a "Greater Serbia" from parts of Croatia and Bosnia. Other irredentist movements have also been brought into connection with the wars, such as "Greater Albania" and "Greater Croatia".

Often described as Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, the conflicts have become infamous for the war crimes involved, including ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and rape. These were the first European conflicts since World War II to be formally judged genocidal in character and many key individual participants were subsequently charged with war crimes. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the UN to prosecute these crimes.

According to the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Yugoslav Wars resulted in the deaths of 140,000 people. The Humanitarian Law Center estimates that in the conflicts in former Yugoslav republics at least 130,000 people lost their lives.

INDEPENDENT

The Bosnia Crisis: Serbs, Croats and Muslims: who hates who and why: Tony Barber in Zagreb traces the ancient roots of a culture clash that has shattered what was Yugoslavia into warring pieces

From TONY BARBER in Zagreb Saturday 8 August 1992

ESTIMATES vary of the death toll in 13 months of civil war in what was Yugoslavia, but it certainly runs into many thousands, making the conflict the most violent in Europe since the Second World War. The immediate origins of the war lie in the collapse of the post-1945 Communist order and subsequent clashes between a variety of militant nationalisms. But the deeper roots lie far back in history.

The main rivals are the Serbs and Croats, two Slavic peoples with similar languages - though Serbian is written in Cyrillic and Croatian in Latin script - but whose histories are very different.

The Serbs are Orthodox Christians whose religion was crucial in keeping alive their national identity during almost four centuries of Ottoman Turkish occupation. Of the nations that formed Yugoslavia in 1918, the Serbs were alone in having liberated themselves from foreign rule and set up an independent state in the 19th century.

The Croats spent centuries under the Austro-Hungarian empire and their Catholicism and Central European outlook were equally important in shaping their identity. They resented the fact that the first Yugoslav state, which lasted from 1918-1941, was to a great extent Serbia writ large, with a Serbian king and army and a Serb- dominated political system.

When the Nazis dismembered Yugoslavia in 1941, they created a fascist puppet state of Croatia, which incorporated most of Bosnia. This state slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Serbs and Jews. From 1941-1945 more than a million Yugoslavs died, more than half at the hands of each other.

Tito rebuilt Yugoslavia as a Communist federation of six equal republics, but ethnic antagonisms were never far below the surface. The Serbs disliked Tito's recognition of the Macedonians and the Muslims of Bosnia-Herzegovina as distinct nationalities.

The effect of recognition of the Muslims - Slavs converted to Islam under Turkish rule - and growth in the Muslim population was to turn Bosnian Serbs into a minority in a republic where they had been the largest ethnic group.

The collapse of Communism in 1990-91 led to the election of governments in Slovenia and Croatia committed to independence. Although the Serb-led Yugoslav army tried briefly to prevent Slovenian independence, the Serbs' main concern was Croatia. Croatia had a 600,000-strong Serbian minority, descendants of Serbs who had fled Turkish rule centuries earlier. With the memory of Second World War atrocities behind them, the Serbs were unwilling to live in an independent Croatia again. For their part, the Croats viewed the Serbian minority as a group that had enjoyed special privileges under Communism.

Supported by the army and Serbia itself, the Serbs rose in armed rebellion. They now control about a quarter of Croatia and have set up two autonomous regions that are under the protection of United Nations forces sent in to keep a fragile peace. Croatia has vowed to recapture these regions, by force if necessary.

In Bosnia, three nationalities lived before the latest conflict in inextricably mixed communities: the Muslims with 44 per cent of the population, the Serbs with 32 per cent and the Croats with 17 per cent. The communities lived in relative harmony. After the European Community demanded a referendum on independence in Bosnia in February, the vote split on ethnic lines. Muslims and Croats supported independence but the Serbs boycotted the vote and, again with the army's support, began a fight for territory.

The feature of the Croatian and Bosnian wars that has caught the world's attention has been the Serbian expulsion of Croats, Muslims and smaller nationalities from their native areas in an effort to make the regions purely Serbian. This policy of 'ethnic cleansing' is responsible for the huge wave of Muslim refugees flooding into many European countries. The detention camps where Serbs are holding large numbers of Muslim prisoners are not, however, places of extermination in the Nazi sense. The primary Serbian goal is to remove Muslims from an area comprising about two-thirds of Bosnia so that this territory can be merged into one lump with the two autonomous Serbian regions of Croatia and Serbia proper. This will be 'Greater Serbia'.

At the same time, the Croatian army has helped Croats in Bosnia to take over much of the west of the republic that lies near Croatia's Adriatic coast. Just as the Serbs have declared an 'Independent Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina', so the Croats have proclaimed an autonomous region of Herzeg-Bosnia with Mostar as its capital. De facto, Croatia has colluded with Serbia in carving up Bosnia, although it has escaped with much less international censure.

The real losers, then, are the Muslims, who have been left with almost no land. Both Serbs and Croats have claimed that Muslims are not a genuine nationality but are 'really' Serbs or Croats beneath their religion.

[Hooper is examining the remains of the first victim - describes the post-mortem into his tape recorder]

Hooper: The height and weight of the victim can only be estimated from the partial remains. The torso has been severed in mid-thorax; there are no major organs remaining...

Hooper: Right arm has been severed above the elbow with massive tissue loss in the upper musculature... partially denuded bone remaining...

Hooper: [to the m.e. and Brody] This was no boat accident!

Hooper: [to Brody] Did you notify the Coast Guard about this?

Brody: No. It was only local jurisdiction.

Hooper: [continues post-mortem] The left arm, head, shoulders, sternum and portions of the rib cage are intact...

Hooper: [to Brody] Do not smoke in here, thank you very much.

Hooper: [lifts up the severed arm] This is what happens. It indicates the non-frenzied feeding of a large squalus - possibly Longimanus or Isurus glauca. Now... the enormous amount of tissue loss prevents any detailed analysis; however the attacking squalus must be considerably larger than any normal squalus found in these waters. Didn't you get on a boat and check out these waters?

Brody: No.

Hooper: Well, this is not a boat accident!
