Sea Power (2001)

I like to give credit where credit is due but there is also that criminal element that is trying to sneak in with the crowd for no reason other than so they can profit from my personal heroism. They sure as hell don't give a damn about the negative impact of their thievery to my life or to the safety of my family.

There is a scene in "The Anniversary Party" where Kevin Kline mentions the Shakespeare lines about "Jack and Jill." I assume I put that in there as a reminder to my family that I survived my mission in 1976 and made it back home so I would probably survive this mission too and make it back home.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_and_Jill_%28song%29

Jack and Jill is a classic nursery rhyme of Western culture.

There are many modern versions of it (many of them parodies), all sharing the same first rhyme:

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

In Shakespeare's "Mid Summer Night's Dream" at the end of act three, it is said:

Jack shall have Jill;
Nought shall go ill;

I have pondering over this detail for a while and I have been thinking it was some kind of automated beacon from the Orion ship. I don't know where I left it. Orbiting the Sun maybe. So anyway, I have been thinking I programmed it to make this signal on this particular day. I don't think it is a coincidence.

I try to remember how pleased I probably felt after returning to Earth in April 1977. Can you imagine what that was like for me to return to Earth in April 1977 after my mission to successfully divert the comet? How great a feeling would that be after all that? Everywhere I looked, I saw the results of my success. Every single positive detail about life I saw represented success to me. The trees stood there as proof to my success. I would have returned to nothing but ashes and a few pissed off survivors in their underground bunkers if I had failed. There would have been nothing left on the surface of the planet Earth. I assume there would have still be an atmosphere. Probably no ozone layer though. The atmosphere probably would have eventually dissipated.

The Wow! signal was a strong, narrowband radio signal detected by Dr. Jerry R. Ehman on August 15, 1977 while working on a SETI project at the Big Ear radio telescope of Ohio State University. The signal bore expected hallmarks of potential non-terrestrial and non-solar system origin. It lasted for 72 seconds, the full duration Big Ear observed it, but has not been detected again. It has been the focus of attention in the mainstream media when talking about SETI results.

Amazed at how closely the signal matched the expected signature of an interstellar signal in the antenna used, Ehman circled the signal on the computer printout and wrote the comment "Wow!" on its side. This comment became the name of the signal.

May 17 - Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom commences her 1977 Silver Jubilee tour in Glasgow.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1977_Silver_Jubilee

The Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth realms. It was celebrated with large-scale parties and parades throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth throughout 1977, culminating in June with the official "Jubilee Days," held to coincide with the Queen's Official Birthday. The anniversary date itself was commemorated in church services across the land on 6 February 1977, and continued throughout the month. In March, preparations started for large parties in every major city of the United Kingdom, as well as for smaller ones for countless individual streets throughout the country.

No monarch before Elizabeth II visited more of the United Kingdom in such a short span of time (the trips lasted three months). All in all, the Queen and her husband Prince Philip visited a total of 36 counties. The trip started with record crowds gathering to see the Royals in Glasgow on 17 May. After moving to England (where a record one million spectators came to greet the couple in Lancashire) and Wales, the Queen and Prince Philip wrapped up the first of their trips with a visit to Northern Ireland.

On 6 June, the Queen lit a bonfire beacon at Windsor Castle, whose light spread across the night in a chain of other beacons throughout the country. On 7 June, crowds lined the procession to St Paul's Cathedral, where the royal family attended a Service of Thanksgiving alongside many world leaders, including United States President Jimmy Carter, as well as all of the former living Prime Ministers, stretching back from Harold Macmillan all the way to Harold Wilson. The service was followed by lunch in the Guildhall, hosted by the Lord Mayor of London Peter Vanneck. At the reception, the Queen was quoted as saying,

“ When I was twenty-one I pledged my life to the service of our people and I asked for God's help to make good that vow. Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgement, I do not regret nor retract one word of it.

After the luncheon, the procession drove the royals down The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where an estimated one million people lined the pavements to see the family wave to onlookers. A further 500 million people around the Commonwealth watched the day's events on live television. 7 June was the day that streets and villages threw elaborate parties for all their residents, to honour the Queen and their country's rich history.
