In early news reports, Jewell was lauded as a hero for helping to evacuate the area after he spotted the suspicious package. For the next several weeks, the news media focused aggressively on him as the presumed culprit, sifting through his life to match a leaked "lone bomber" profile that the FBI had used. The media, to varying degrees, portrayed Jewell as a failed law enforcement officer who may have planted the bomb so he could find it and be a hero.[3]
Richard Jewell's hunting rifles were confiscated and never returned, having been presumably destroyed or sold. His mother's family photographs and Tupperware collection were taken as "evidence" and returned vandalized. Two of the bombing victims filed lawsuits against Jewell on the basis of this reporting. In a reference to the Unabomber, Jay Leno called him the "Una-doofus".[4] Other references include "Una-Bubba," [5] and (of his mother) "Una-Mama." Jewell was never officially charged, but the FBI searched his home, questioned his associates, investigated his background, and maintained twenty-four hour surveillance of him.
On one episode of the David Letterman Show (date unknown), they had a top 10 list of new things in the "Star Wars" remake. One of them was, "Darth Vader blames Richard Jewell for blowing up the death star."

Ironman Triathlon
The first Ironman Triathlon was held in 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and continued yearly until 1980. In 1981 the competition was moved to the less urbanized Big Island by Valerie Silk and in 1982 Silk moved the race date from February to October; as a result of this change there were two Ironman Triathlon events in 1982.
On this occasion, U.S. Navy Commander John Collins pointed out that a recent article in Sports Illustrated magazine had declared that Eddy Merckx, the great Belgian cyclist, had the highest recorded "oxygen uptake" of any athlete ever measured, so perhaps cyclists were more fit than anyone. Cdr. Collins and his wife had taken part in the triathlons staged in 1974 and 1975 by the San Diego Track Club in and around Mission Bay, California, as well as the 1975 Optimist Sports Fiesta Triathlon in Coronado, California. A number of the other military athletes in attendance were also familiar with the San Diego races, so they understood the concept when Cdr. Collins suggested that the debate should be settled through a race combining the three existing long-distance competitions already on the island: the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 mi./3.85 km), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 miles; originally a two-day event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 mi./42.195 km).
Of the fifteen men to start off in the early morning on February 18th, 1978, twelve completed the race. Gordon Haller was the first to earn the title Ironman by completing the course in a time of 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 40 seconds.

Retaliation
There was some retaliation. Libya responded by firing several Scud missiles at U.S. Coast Guard stations on the Italian island of Lampedusa which exploded far short of their targets. In Beirut, Lebanon, two British hostages held by the Abu Nidal Organization, Alec Collett and Leigh Douglas, along with an American named Philip Padfield were hanged in revenge. In addition, journalist John McCarthy was kidnapped and tourist Paul Appleby was murdered in Jerusalem.
Gaddafi quashed an internal revolt, the organization of which he blamed on the United States. Although Gaddafi appeared to have left the public sphere for a while in 1986/87, it later emerged that he had significantly increased Libyan arms shipments to terrorist groups in this period – especially to the Provisional IRA.
The Libyan government was behind the Pan Am 73 hijack on September 5, 1986 which was carried out in retaliation for the U.S. bombing as reported by The Sunday Times (London) days after British Prime Minister Tony Blair's state visit to Tripoli in March 2004.
Then came the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988. Iran was initially thought to have been responsible for the Lockerbie bombing but two Libyans were charged in 1991, one of whom was convicted for the crime on January 31, 2001.

Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked on September 5, 1986, by four armed men of the Abu Nidal Organization. The Boeing 747 with 379 on board had just arrived from Bombay, India, and was preparing to depart Karachi International Airport in Pakistan for Frankfurt International Airport in Frankfurt, Germany, continuing on to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. At least 20 died during the hijacking, including citizens of the United States, Pakistan, India and Mexico. June 8, 2002 Ironman Utah!
On Ironman morning as I battled 6-foot swells in Utah Lake, swallowing lung sized gulps of dark brown Utah Lake water, I feared that perhaps that dream just might become reality.
Unfortunately it WAS reality for fellow Ironman swimmer John Boland from Redondo Beach, California who lost his life in Utah Lake that day. The only swimming fatality in the history of Ironman happened in that Lake that day probably no more than a stone's throw away from me.
I was worried about the mass swim start in the dark, murky water. How long would I be bashed about? Will I lose my goggles? How can I spot other swimmers under the muddy water? - I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face during yesterday's practice swim!

Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW
Rebecca Griego called her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Rowan "a psycho from the past." He wouldn't stop calling her office at the University of Washington. When she no longer would answer the phone, he harassed her sister and threatened to kidnap her dogs.
On Monday morning, Rowan found Griego alone in her fourth-floor office in Gould Hall and fatally shot her before killing himself.
