http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramp

A tramp (at least in British English usage) is a vagrant or itinerant who travels from place to place, traditionally “tramping”, that is, walking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tramp

The Tramp, also known as The Little Tramp, was Charlie Chaplin's most memorable on-screen character, a recognized icon of world cinema most dominant during the silent film era.

The Tramp, as portrayed by Chaplin, is a bumbling but usually good-hearted character who is most famously presented as a vagrant who endeavors to behave with the manners and dignity of a gentleman despite his actual social status. However, while he is ready to take what paying work that is available, he also uses his cunning to get what he needs to survive and escape the authority figures who will not tolerate it. Chaplin's films did not always portray "The Tramp" (or "The Little Fellow," as Chaplin called him) as a vagrant, however. The character was rarely referred to by any names onscreen, although he was sometimes identified as "Charlie" and rarely, as in the original silent version of The Gold Rush, "The Little Tramp".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_%28Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation%29

"Conspiracy" is a first-season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, first broadcast May 9, 1988. It is episode #25, production #125, teleplay written by Tracy Tormé, based on a story by Robert Sabaroff, and directed by Cliff Bole.

Overview: The strange behavior of high-ranking officers leads Picard to uncover an alien conspiracy within Starfleet.

"Conspiracy" was unusually violent for an episode of Star Trek, and it featured a surprisingly ruthless Picard. This side of the Captain was not seen before or after the showing of "Conspiracy," thus making it somewhat of an anomaly within the series.

On stardate 41775.5, the USS Enterprise is en route to Pacifica when Captain Picard receives a priority transmission from Captain Walker Keel of the USS Horatio. Keel tells him they need to talk face-to-face on the planet Dytallix B in the Mira system as soon as possible – and not to trust anyone. The Enterprise arrives at the desolate planet where Worf detects three other Federation starships – the USS Renegade, (commanded by Tryla Scott); the USS Thomas Paine, (commanded by Captain Rixx); and the USS Horatio. None of the ships offer greetings and Picard beams to the planet alone.

Picard materializes before a mine entrance where three figures level phasers at him. Captain Keel steps from the shadows and barrages Picard with a series of personal questions to be sure Picard is not an imposter. Keel then introduces Rixx and Scott and gets down to business. The three declare there have been strange patterns emerging within Starfleet – unusual orders, irrational proposals, unexplained deaths and accidents, and together they believe a new threat is emerging within their ranks. Picard is incredulous without proof, but Keel insists those at the top level of command are changing somehow. Keel insists that Picard keep his eyes open and to communicate with him covertly.

Continuing course to Pacifica, Picard has Data review all orders Starfleet has given in the past six months to find any "anomalies". Next, the Enterprise comes upon a debris field which Worf determines to be the wreckage of the USS Horatio. Picard fills Riker in about the secret meeting and explains that during their visit to Relva VII, Admiral Quinn had indicated there was a subversion brewing within Starfleet. He believes Keel was warning of the same thing and destruction of the Horatio must have been sabotage. Data enters and relays his findings of a number of abnormal directives given with subtlety at the highest ranks. He suggests it could be an attempt to control vital areas of Federation. Riker wonders if it could be a prelude to invasion. Picard boldly decides to go to Earth and find out directly from the top.

USS Cole (DDG 67)

Commissioned: June 8, 1996

About the Ship’s Name, about Sergeant Darrell Samuel Cole:

On August 25 ,1941, Cole enlisted in the Marine Corps for the duration of the National Emergency, and following a boot training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he was appointed to the Field Music School for training as a Marine Corps Field Music, the equivalent of a bugler. Completing instruction, he was transferred to the First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, and on August 7, 1942, reached the shores of Guadalcanal for the first American offensive of World War II.

Not too happy in his role of field music when he had joined a fighting outfit to fight and after acquitting himself meritoriously as a machine gunner in the absence of the regular gunner, he applied for a change in rating, but was refused due to the shortage of buglers. Cole completed his first overseas tour of duty and returned to the United States in February 1943, where he joined First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, then forming as a part of the Fourth Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. When the unit moved to California he again asked for relief as a Field Music and for permission to perform line duties, but was again refused due to the shortage of buglers in the Marine Corps.

During the first engagement of the Fourth Division at Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll, Cole, again forsaking his bugle, went into action as a machine-gunner. Four months later, when the Division stormed ashore at Saipan, he had been assigned to a machine-gun unit. Because of his proven ability in combat, he was designated a machine gun section leader. During the battle when his squad leader was killed, Cole, although wounded, assumed command of the entire squad and acquitted himself in such a manner to be awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "...his resolute leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and tenacious determination in the face of terrific opposition..." , He was also awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action.

A few days after the battle of Saipan, Cole, again led his squad ashore in the invasion of the neighboring islands of Tinian, where he continued to live up to his growing reputation as "The Fighting Field Music."

Medal of Honor citation

Rank and organization: Hospital Corpsman Second Class, U.S. Navy, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Place and date: Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam, 19 March 1969. Entered service at: Nashville, Tenn. Born: 14 February 1945, McMinnville, Tenn.

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a HC2c. with Battery D, 2d Battalion, at Phu Loc 6, near An Hoa. During the early morning hours, an estimated battalion-sized enemy force launched a determined assault against the battery's position, and succeeded in effecting a penetration of the barbed-wire perimeter. The initial burst of enemy fire caused numerous casualties among the marines who had immediately manned their howitzers during the rocket and mortar attack. Undaunted by the intense hostile fire, HC2c. Ray moved from parapet to parapet, rendering emergency medical treatment to the wounded. Although seriously wounded himself while administering first aid to a marine casualty, he refused medical aid and continued his lifesaving efforts. While he was bandaging and attempting to comfort another wounded marine, HC2c. Ray was forced to battle 2 enemy soldiers who attacked his position, personally killing 1 and wounding the other. Rapidly losing his strength as a result of his severe wounds, he nonetheless managed to move through the hail of enemy fire to other casualties. Once again, he was faced with the intense fire of oncoming enemy troops and, despite the grave personal danger and insurmountable odds, succeeded in treating the wounded and holding off the enemy until he ran out of ammunition, at which time he sustained fatal wounds. HC2c. Ray's final act of heroism was to protect the patient he was treating. He threw himself upon the wounded marine, thus saving the man's life when an enemy grenade exploded nearby. By his determined and persevering actions, courageous spirit, and selfless devotion to the welfare of his marine comrades, HC2c. Ray served to inspire the men of Battery D to heroic efforts in defeating the enemy. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Memorable quotes for

Platoon (1986)

Chris Taylor: [narrating] Well, here I am, anonymous all right. With guys nobody really cares about. They come from the end of the line, most of 'em. Small towns you never heard of: Pulaski, Tennessee; Brandon, Mississippi; Pork Van, Utah; Wampum, Pennsylvania. Two years' high school's about it, maybe if they're lucky a job waiting for them back at a factory, but most of 'em got nothing. They're poor, they're the unwanted, yet they're fighting for our society and our freedom. It's weird, isn't it? They're the bottom of the barrel and they know it. Maybe that's why they call themselves grunts, cause a grunt can take it, can take anything. They're the best I've ever seen, Grandma. The heart & soul.

They couldn't send a direct signal, right?

- Right. The curve of the Earth prevents it.

You'd need satellites to relay that signal

Well, I found a signal hidden

USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75)
GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER
Commission Date: 12/04/1998

http://www.army.mil/cmh/html/moh/vietnam-a-l.html

VIETNAM WAR MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS

*COOK, DONALD GILBERT

Rank and organization: Colonel, United States Marine Corps, Prisoner of War by the Viet Cong in the Republic of Vietnam. Place and date: Vietnam, 31 December 1964 to 8 December, 1967. Entered Service at: Brooklyn, New York. Date and place of birth: 9 August 1934, Brooklyn New York. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while interned as a Prisoner of War by the Viet Cong in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 31 December 1964 to 8 December 1967. Despite the fact that by so doing he would bring about harsher treatment for himself, Colonel (then Captain) Cook established himself as the senior prisoner, even though in actuality he was not. Repeatedly assuming more than his share of their health, Colonel Cook willingly and unselfishly put the interests of his comrades before that of his own well-being and, eventually, his life. Giving more needy men his medicine and drug allowance while constantly nursing them, he risked infection from contagious diseases while in a rapidly deteriorating state of health. This unselfish and exemplary conduct, coupled with his refusal to stray even the slightest from the Code of Conduct, earned him the deepest respect from not only his fellow prisoners, but his captors as well. Rather than negotiate for his own release or better treatment, he steadfastly frustrated attempts by the Viet Cong to break his indomitable spirit. and passed this same resolve on to the men whose well-being he so closely associated himself. Knowing his refusals would prevent his release prior to the end of the war, and also knowing his chances for prolonged survival would be small in the event of continued refusal, he chose nevertheless to adhere to a Code of Conduct far above that which could be expected. His personal valor and exceptional spirit of loyalty in the face of almost certain death reflected the highest credit upon Colonel Cook, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service.
