There were any number of ways the castaways could have made their island noticeable to the reconnaissance plane, rather than the small mirror, from spelling out with logs, rocks or even pieces of the Minnow a distress message or lighting a fire on the beach big enough for the smoke to be seen, for two examples. It isn't as though they didn't have time to prepare, and are we to believe they were that dumb?
