WASHINGTON (Army News Service, July 24, 2009) -- Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who was killed in Afghanistan June 21, 2006, will receive the Medal of Honor for his valor in combat, the White House has announced.
President Barack Obama is scheduled to award Monti's Medal of Honor Sept. 17, to his parents in a White House ceremony. His father Paul Monti currently lives in Raynham, Mass., where his
son was born and raised.
Monti, 30, was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, when he was killed in Gowardesh, Afghanistan, in a battle with enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He displayed immeasurable courage and uncommon valor, according to the White House release, which goes on to say he sacrificed his own life in an effort to save his comrade.

President Obama called Paul Monti, a retired school teacher, Tuesday evening at his home in Raynham, Mass., Monti said.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, July 24, 2009) -- Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who was killed in Afghanistan June 21, 2006, will receive the Medal of Honor for his valor in combat, the White House has announced.
President Barack Obama is scheduled to award Monti's Medal of Honor Sept. 17, to his parents in a White House ceremony. His father Paul Monti currently lives in Raynham, Mass., where his son was born and raised.
Monti, 30, was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, when he was killed in Gowardesh, Afghanistan, in a battle with enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He displayed immeasurable courage and uncommon valor, according to the White House release, which goes on to say he sacrificed his own life in an effort to save his comrade.

President Obama called Paul Monti, a retired school teacher, Tuesday evening at his home in Raynham, Mass., Monti said.

STS-51-L was the twenty-fifth flight of the American Space Shuttle program, which marked the first time a civilian had flown aboard the Space Shuttle. The mission used Space Shuttle Challenger, which lifted off from Launch Complex 39-B on January 28, 1986 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
The mission ended in disaster following the destruction of Challenger 73 seconds after lift-off because of the failure of an O-ring seal on Challenger's right Solid Rocket Booster (SRB). The failure of the seal allowed a flamethrower-like flare to impinge upon one of two aft SRB attach struts, which eventually failed, freeing the booster to pivot about its remaining attachment points. Subsequently, the forward part of the booster cylinder impacted the external tank (ET) intertank area, leading to a structural failure of the ET—the core structural component of the entire stack. A rapid burning of liberated propellants ensued. With the structural "backbone" of the stack compromised and breaking up, the SRBs flew off on their own, as did the orbiter, rapidly disintegrating due to the overwhelming aerodynamic forces. Evidence found in the remnants of the crew cabin showed that several of the emergency air supplies (PEAPs) carried by the astronauts had been
manually activated, suggesting that the forces during breakup of the orbiter were not inherently fatal and that at least three crew members were alive after the craft broke up.

Having fled the besieged Ragnar Anchorage at the end of the miniseries, the convoy of refugee spaceships is relentlessly pursued and attacked by Cylon Basestars. The colonial fleet must execute a faster-than-light (FTL) jump every 33 minutes to escape the Cylons, who consistently arrive at the new jump coordinates approximately 33 minutes later. After five days and 237 jumps, the fleet's crew and passengers, particularly those aboard Galactica, have been operating without sleep while facing the strain of nearly constant military action. Galactica's Viper crews must battle the Cylon Basestars and Raiders in a delaying action to cover the escape of the other ships with every jump. Most of the episode focuses on the perils of the constant escape, speculation on how the fleet is being tracked by the Cylons, and the deterioration of the crews from stress and fatigue.
Meanwhile, on Caprica, Lt. Karl Agathon (call sign "Helo") is still alive and running from Cylon patrols.
Back at the fleet, the Olympic Carrier, a commercial passenger vessel with 1,345 souls aboard, is missing and may have been left behind during the 238th consecutive FTL jump. With the ship assumed lost to the Cylons, the attacks unexpectedly cease, allowing the fleet some respite. Three hours later the Olympic Carrier suddenly rejoins the fleet. Commander Adama is suspicious of the missing ship's sudden arrival; and Dr. Baltar's internal Number Six suggests to Baltar that the Olympic Carrier has been infiltrated by Cylon agents, tracking the ship and the colonial fleet all along. Baltar advises President Laura Roslin that the ship may have been infiltrated with Cylons during its absence, and is now a threat to the fleet's safety. Orders are given for the ship not to approach the fleet, but the vessel does not respond and continues towards the fleet. 33 minutes after the Olympic Carrier's return, Cylon Basestars arrive, and Galactica's radiological
sensors detect active nuclear weapons aboard the Olympic Carrier. President Roslin and Commander Adama order Capt. Lee "Apollo" Adama and Lt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace to destroy it.
After hesitating to fire on what is ostensibly a civilian ship, they destroy the ship while the rest of the colonial fleet jumps away. This is a relief to Baltar, as the Olympic Carrier was carrying Dr. Amorak, a passenger who had earlier contacted the President and insisted that he had information regarding a traitor in their midst. Baltar suspected that Amorak had knowledge about Baltar's unwitting collusion with the Cylon attack on the colonies. Baltar's Number Six declares that God is looking after Baltar's interests by allowing the destruction of the Olympic Carrier.

Operation Praying Mantis
Operation Praying Mantis was an April 18, 1988 attack by U.S. naval forces in retaliation for the Iranian mining of the Persian Gulf and the subsequent damage to an American warship.
On April 14, the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts struck a mine while deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Earnest Will, the 1987-88 convoy missions in which U.S. warships escorted reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers to protect them from Iranian attacks. The explosion put a 25-foot hole in the Roberts' hull and nearly sank it. The crew saved their ship with no loss of life, and Roberts was towed to Dubai on April 16.
After the mining, U.S. Navy divers recovered other mines in the area. When the serial numbers were found to match those of mines seized along with the Iran Ajr the previous September, U.S. military officials planned a retaliatory operation against Iranian targets in the Persian Gulf.
The battle, the largest for American naval forces since World War II, sank two Iranian warships and three armed speedboats. It also marked the first anti-ship surface-to-surface missile engagement in U.S. Navy history.
The attack by the U.S. helped pressure Iran to agree to a ceasefire with Iraq later that summer, ending the eight-year conflict between the Persian Gulf neighbors.

An Iranian navy frigate was attacked and set afire by U.S. attack planes and an American destroyer today after the Iranian ship ignored warnings and fired missiles at the U.S. aircraft, the Pentagon said.
The confrontation occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Persian Gulf, around 7:30 a.m. Houston time, about 7 1/2 hours after the United States bombarded and destroyed two Iranian offshore platforms, said Dan Howard, the Pentagon's chief spokesman.
The battle with the Iranian frigate appeared to provide fresh evidence that Iran intended to respond militarily around the gulf to the U.S. attack on its offshore platforms.
Earlier, an Iranian patrol boat was sunk after advancing on U.S. warships; an American helicopter came under fire from another gunboat, and one U.S. warship fired on two approaching Iranian jet fighters, although it was unclear whether they were hit.
According to Carlucci and Crowe, today's operation began around midnight (Houston time) with two groups of Navy warships attacking two oil platforms in the central Persian Gulf.
Both of the platforms were ultimately destroyed - one by naval gunfire and the other by explosives that were planted by a boarding party of Marines, the officials said.
"The Simpson fired three Standard missiles, two of which hit the Iranian vessel. The Wainwright fired one, which hit the Iranian vessel. We subsequently closed on it and fired another missile and it sunk. We found no people in the water."
And at another point, the Wainwright detected two Iranian F-4 jet fighters closing on its position, Crowe said.
"It fired two missiles at those aircraft," the admiral said. "They subsequently turned away and we do not know if they were hit or not. They dropped off our scope."

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.
The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.
"We aim to deter further Iranian aggression - not provoke it," President Reagan said. "They must know that we will protect our ships, and if they threaten us, they'll pay a price."
Official estimates of the toll from today's fighting changed through the day, but Reagan stated without elaboration that at least five Iranian vessels of various sizes - but no U.S. ones - had been damaged.
"Following the destruction of the two Iranian military platforms, whose personnel had evacuated after our warning, several Iran naval vessels and small boats attempted to engage our ships and aircraft," Reagan said.
"Three Iranian naval vessels and at least two small boats were sunk or very severely damaged," he added.
Also today, Iran said the United States had entered the Iran-Iraq war, charging U.S. helicopters supported an Iraqi land offensive in the Faw Peninsula. The Pentagon dismissed the charge, saying no U.S. military forces have been involved with Iraqi units.
The White House said three U.S. warships ships blasted each Iranian platform. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attacks, and the Iranians fled prior to the shelling, the White House said.
The White House said today the oil platform attacks were "a measured response to Iran's unlawful use of force."
Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the United States raided the platforms because Iran was responsible for the "mine attack" on the USS Samuel B. Roberts.
The platforms were manned by Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Fitzwater said they were given several minutes' warning, and some were seen leaving.
The White House spokesman said the frigates Simpson and Bagley and the cruiser Wainwright attacked the Sirri platform.

Jared Christopher Monti (September 20, 1975—June 21, 2006) was a soldier in the United States Army who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 21, 2006 while trying to rescue a fellow soldier. On July 24, 2009 [ INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST AGAINST THE U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT IS ]President Barack Obama signed the [ FRAUDULENT AND SEVERELY TREASONOUS ]authorization for Monti to receive the Medal of Honor for this action. WASHINGTON (Army News Service, July 24, 2009) -- Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who was killed in Afghanistan June 21, 2006, will receive the Medal of Honor for his valor in combat, the White House has announced.
President Barack Obama is scheduled to award Monti's Medal of Honor Sept. 17, to his parents in a White House ceremony. His father Paul Monti currently lives in Raynham, Mass., where his
son was born and raised.
Monti, 30, was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, when he was killed in Gowardesh, Afghanistan, in a battle with enemy forces using small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He displayed immeasurable courage and uncommon valor, according to the White House release, which goes on to say he sacrificed his own life in an effort to save his comrade.

Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who was killed in Afghanistan June 21, 2006, will receive the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat, his father, Paul Monti, told Army Times in a telephone interview Thursday.
President Obama called Paul Monti, a retired school teacher, Tuesday evening at his home in Raynham, Mass., Monti said.

The family of a 30-year-old US Army sergeant from Raynham who was killed on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan three years ago will accept the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest honor for military, on his behalf in September.
Monti’s father, Paul Monti, of Raynham, said he received a phone call from President Obama Tuesday notifying him that his son had been chosen to receive the [ DISHONORABLE ]honor.
Monti’s mother, Janet Monti, of Winterville, N.C., also received the bittersweet call from Obama Tuesday.

(a) Any person subject to this chapter who—
(1) with intent to usurp or override lawful military authority, refuses, in concert with any other person, to obey orders or otherwise do his duty or creates any violence or disturbance is guilty of mutiny;
(2) with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of lawful civil authority, creates, in concert with any other person, revolt, violence, or other disturbance against that authority is guilty of sedition;
(3) fails to do his utmost to prevent and suppress a mutiny or sedition being committed in his presence, or fails to take all reasonable means to inform his superior commissioned officer or commanding officer of a mutiny or sedition which he knows or has reason to believe is taking place, is guilty of a failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition.
(b) A person who is found guilty of attempted mutiny, mutiny, sedition, or failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.

(a) Whoever, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any foreign government, or to any faction or party or military or naval force within a foreign country, whether recognized or unrecognized by the United States, or to any representative, officer, agent, employee, subject, or citizen thereof, either directly or indirectly, any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, note, instrument, appliance, or information relating to the national defense, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, except that the sentence of death shall not be imposed unless the jury or, if there is no jury, the court, further finds that the offense resulted in the identification by a foreign
power (as defined in section 101(a) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) of an individual acting as an agent of the United States and consequently in the death of that individual, or directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information; or any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy.
(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.
(c) If two or more persons conspire to violate this section, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.
(d)
(1) Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall forfeit to the United States irrespective of any provision of State law—
(A) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds the person obtained, directly or indirectly, as the result of such violation, and
(B) any of the person’s property used, or intended to be used, in any manner or part, to commit, or to facilitate the commission of, such violation.

After I awoke from a nap this afternoon, I felt compelled to write about a dream I had just before I woke up but then did not write about it. I started feeling that need to write about it again but may have forgotten some details by now. I have started thinking that the dreams I have just before waking up mean something in their own right.
In the dream, I was wearing a Navy uniform. I didn’t have anywhere to go though and seemed to be just walking around what I guess was a Navy installation. I decided to go into a building to ask if another Commander was still there even though I knew he wasn’t there. I spoke to a Navy enlisted person who appeared to be an Airman judging by his three green stripes although I couldn’t make out his rating symbol. He asked me a question but I didn’t hear his question and I asked him to repeat it by saying “Sir?” to him with an inquisitive tone. He asked me how I could not know that the other Commander was already deployed and I said something about how I just did not know. I left and walked down and out on some kind of spiral staircase, although that part isn’t that clear and I find myself wondering about that part. There was another spiral staircase ahead of me, there seemed to be dual staircases on either side of the front door to that
building, and a Lt. j.g. came down the other side. I want to say he was someone I should know but I can’t picture him as someone I knew. I want to say it was him that spoke something to me at that point but I also want to say the voice came from behind me. He said, or someone else said, something about me being “a little off.” I wondered if he meant that I was wrong about some of these details. Then I wondered if he meant I was a little crazy, but I think I started thinking that last one after I woke up. I think after he or someone said that, it made me start thinking about the uniform I was wearing. I found myself thinking after I awoke that it seemed to be a Marine Corps officers dress uniform. I seemed to be wearing the dark blue Marine uniform with white pants. But I am confused about one detail as it seemed I looked to my left shoulder and saw Navy shoulder boards with Captain stripes. Or was it just an epaulet, I am not sure, but there was a
pair of sunglasses clipped under it. I was walking down the sidewalk and there were two people ahead of me. One may have been that Lt. j.g. Another was a female officer, Navy I guess. Somewhere along there I realized I had forgotten to wear the appropriate cover for that uniform and realized that I was still wearing a ball cap, although I had actually taken it off as I went outside. I realized I couldn’t return anyone’s salute. Then I started thinking that the ball cap had USS Wainwright printed on it but I don’t remember actually looking at it and I may remember that detail in the sense that someone was reading details to me, they were telling me what the name was on the cap. I also remember that it had a frayed bill just like the Nike cap I have now. I remember I was walking very slowly. It was hard to walk and I was limping. I have thought several times before that if I do start wearing the uniform again, I should use a cane until I get my leg
back in better shape. Then I was in a parking garage and I had to cross a street into a parking lot, I guess to find my car.

Congresswoman Holt, Secretary Lehman, Admiral Watkins, General Davis, Admiral Larson, distinguished guests, members of the class of 1985, ladies and gentlemen: I am so proud and honored to be here and to have a 22-gun salute. [Laughter]
But it's an honor for any President to commemorate the graduation of new officers from our service academies, but today is a special privilege for me. I was reminded on the way up here that we have a lot in common. You were the first class to enter the Naval Academy during my term in office, and you might say we've finished a 4-year course together. Now we're both about ready for the real stuff. [Laughter] One thing bothers me, though. I still seem to be climbing that greased monument and you only had to do it once, 3 years ago. 1 [Laughter]

Well, looking out over your faces in this inspiring and historic setting gives reason for confidence in our nation's future. These last 4 years have been spent preparing you to assume responsibility for the protection of our country and all that we stand for. You're part of a noble tradition.
America's independence and freedom, since we were but 13 Colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast, have relied on the bravery, the good sense, and leadership of her officer corps. We've leaned heavily on men of the sea, on our Navy and Marine Corps. Your careers will be no less significant to future generations of Americans than those of past naval heroes.
You will hear during your career, as I've heard during times in my life, that maintaining the military at peak readiness-keeping our forces trained and supplied with the best weapons and equipment—is too costly. Well, I say it is too costly for America not to be prepared. As Presidents since Washington have noted: The way to prevent war is to be prepared for it.
And as obvious as that is, it's not always appreciated. There's a story about John Paul Jones' chief gunners mate. It was during the gore and thunder of that most historic battle. He was loading and firing cannon and carrying the wounded to the medical officer, cutting away the tangled rigging. And apparently in the midst of that first fight, John Paul Jones went below momentarily and changed into a new uniform. And as he emerged on deck a voice rang out through the smoke and fire—it was the British captain asking, "Have you struck your colors?" And the gunners mate, sweat and blood dripping from his body, turned and saw Jones now in his fresh uniform reply: "I have not yet begun to fight." And the gunners mate said, "There's always somebody who didn't get the word."

One man who sat where you do now and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1968 is another member of our administration-Assistant Secretary of Defense James Webb, the most decorated member of his class. James' gallantry as a marine officer in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations, including two Purple Hearts. James wrote several books about American service men and women. In his book, "A Sense of Honor," he describes the life that you have chosen. He wrote:
"Servicemen are always in motion, in the air at more than the speed of sound, underwater at depths whales could only dream of, on the surface of the water cruising at 30 miles an hour through crashing seas with another ship almost touching theirs . . . replenishing their oil supplies. Or they are on the ground, in the dirt, testing and training weapons that may someday kill others but today may deal them that same irony. The smallest margin of error separates a live man from a dead man. And in war, of course, they are the first and usually the only ones to pay.
