English: The "Baker" explosion, part of Operation Crossroads, a nuclear weapon test by the United States military at Bikini Atoll, Micronesia, on 25 July 1946(1946-07-25). The wider, exterior cloud is actually just a condensation cloud caused by the Wilson chamber effect, and was very brief. There was no classic mushroom cloud rising to the stratosphere, but inside the condensation cloud the top of the water geyser formed a mushroom-like head called the cauliflower, which fell back into the lagoon (compare with this image, a photo taken slightly later, after the condensation cloud had cleared). The water released by the explosion was highly radioactive and contaminated many of the ships that were set up near it. Some were otherwise undamaged and sent to Hunter's Point in San Francisco, California, United States for decontamination. Those which could not be decontaminated were sunk a number of miles off the coast of San Francisco.

Operation Crossroads
Operation Crossroads was a series of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946. Its purpose was to test the effect of nuclear weapons on naval ships. The series consisted of two detonations, each with a yield of 23 kilotons: Able was detonated at an altitude of 520 feet (158 m) on 1 July 1946; Baker was detonated 90 feet (27 m) underwater on 25 July 1946.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- President Bush traveled here Tuesday to the home state of the man he is likely to face in the November general election to bestow the nation's highest civilian honor on Wal-Mart discount store founder Sam Walton.
Although he stressed that the trip to Gov. Bill Clinton's state to give Walton the Presidential Medal of Freedom was "non-political," it had all the trappings of a major campaign event, complete with live television coverage
"This visit is not about Sam Walton's wealth. He has earned it and that's his business," Bush said
Bush's visit posed a dilemma for some Wal-Mart employees. Many confessed that they had voted for him in 1988. But they pointed out that Hillary Clinton, the governor's wife, is a cherished member of the Wal-Mart board of directors
