The Walking Dead

18 Miles Out

Then-- then it was so quick. Everything-- It just happened. Two weeks later, I'm in the hospital and there were soldiers shooting people in the halls. They were shooting people, man, not walkers. Then the walkers came through. You know, I tried to get you out, I tried, but we weren't gonna make it. Man, there was no way and I knew it.

I started hearing a sound similar to the sound effects in that film of the coded signal.

Eventually I started to think it was from the wind blowing across the hollow tube that is a handle on my tripod.

Later as I struggled to keep my bicycle in control as I pushed it back down the mountain on a different route I ascended the mini-mountain I was hearing that sound again and seemed to be from the pulses of the steady wind across the frame of my bicycle.

I never thought to record video with sound of what I was hearing. I tend to mentally ignore the video function of my body camera because it too easily captures the sound of my breathing.

I won't be going up there again any time soon.

Red Storm Rising (1986) Tom Clancy

Chapter 35

***

USS REUBEN JAMES

"Vampire, vampire! We have incoming missiles."

Here we go again, Morris thought. The tactical display was more modern than what he'd had on Pharris--each of the incoming missiles was marked with a velocity vector that indicated speed and direction. They were coming in low.

Morris lifted his phone. "Bridge, Combat. Execute separation maneuver."

"Bridge, aye. Separating now," Ernst said. "Crash stop! All back emergency!"

The helmsman pulled the throttle control back, then abruptly reversed the pitch of the propeller blades, throwing the ship from ahead to full astern. Reuben James slowed so rapidly that men had to brace themselves, and Battleaxe forged ahead, accelerating to twenty-five knots. As soon as it was safe, the British frigate turned hard to port, and Reuben James went to ahead full and turned sharply to starboard.

Any Soviet radar operator who had lingered behind would have been impressed by the deception. The oncoming AS-4 missiles had been targeted on a single blip. Now there were two, and they were separating. The missiles divided their attention evenly, with three opting for either target.

Morris watched his display intently. The distance between his ship and his companion was widening rapidly.

"Missiles are tracking us!" the ESM operator said loudly. "We have multiple missile seeker heads tracking us."

"Right full rudder, reverse course. Fire off chaff rockets!"

Everyone in the Combat Information Center jumped as four canisters exploded directly overhead

Space: Above and Beyond

NEVER NO MORE

Original Air Date: 4th February 1996

OAKES: Lieutenant Vansen claims to have visually contacted an alien aircraft. Neither myself, Lieutenant Sullivan nor lidar saw any such craft. Lieutenant Vansen broke radio silence, abandoned formation and then the Lieutenant told us to turn tail and run. Now I don't know if that's how the 58th flies but in the 35th ...

Hawkes goes for Oakes.

HAWKES: The 58th flies ...

McQueen pulls Hawkes off.

McQUEEN: I said get back.

West leads Hawkes away.

VANSEN: I was there for you as ordered.

McQUEEN: Lieutenant ... you were ordered not to reveal your position. Now what evidence did you have of enemy activity?

VANSEN: I am not at liberty to discuss such evidence at the present time.

OAKES: And what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Vansen mouths 'I saw' at McQueen.

OAKES: Now she's just trying to cover her ass.

McQUEEN: Make a report, Captain.

McQueen takes Vansen's arm and leads her away.

Cut to a briefing room lit with red light. The senior military brass sit around a table.

VANSEN: It was approximately seventeen metres equal distance tri-wing, span ten to fifteen metres. Angle of attack was much more pronounced than standard enemy attack space craft. I did not detect any indication of the craft's position on my S.A.43 lidar. And I believe that it is capable of broadcasting false information. The craft had a fuselage. And it was bullet shaped and I didn't get a very good look. However, the nose had been marked. Writing. English. And a crude human skull.

ADMIRAL BRODEN: Could you discern its message?

VANSEN: It read ... abandon all hope.

Operations Officer

Description

As an Operations Officer for the CIA, you will focus on clandestinely spotting, assessing, developing, recruiting, and handling non-US citizens with access to foreign intelligence vital to US foreign policy and national security decisionmakers. You will be expected to build relationships based on rapport and trust using sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to assess character and motivation.

Operation Officers spend most of their careers serving in multi-year assignments in a variety of overseas locations. As such, all Operation Officers must be able to be medically cleared for world wide deployment. All Operations Officers address a highly diverse and dynamic set of intelligence requirements on country- and region-specific issues, as well as transnational issues such as counterterrorism, counter proliferation, and cyber.

All Directorate of Operations (DO) officers are hired at an entry level and train as they are expected to work - as one team. Operations Officers begin their careers spending one to two years learning the foundations of clandestine operational tradecraft via classroom training, practical exercises, and on-the-job experience gained through a series of interim assignments. Following successful completion of the foundational training, each DO officer will transition into advanced training activity to prepare them to serve effectively in their respective career occupational specialty.
