Synopsis
Mary Baker was a cobbler's daughter who, in 1817, appeared in a British village speaking a strange language. She claimed to be Princess Caraboo, from the island of Javasu in the Indian Ocean, and drew visitors and admirers from far and wide before she was exposed.
An Exotic Stranger
Mary Baker was born Mary Willcocks in Witheridge in Devon, England in 1791. Little is known about her early life.
In April 1871, Baker arrived at the home in Almondsbury in Gloucestershire, England. Speaking an exotic language and dressed in a black turban and unusual clothes, Baker appeared to come from a foreign land. The cobbler and his wife took her to the county officials.
The local overseer for the poor, unsure of what to do with the woman, took her to the county magistrate, Sam Worrall, and his wife Elizabeth. The Worralls were suspicious of Baker, and took her to stay at the local inn for the night. At the inn, Baker pointed to a pineapple, and excitedly indicted that it was a fruit from her homeland called "Anana"— which means pineapple in several different languages. She also chanted a strange prayer, and slept on the floor.
Conning the Locals
Back at the Worralls', the mystery of their strange guest's identity was becoming clear. Portugese sailor claimed to understand Baker's story and translated what she was saying. Her name was Princess Caraboo, he said, and she hailed from he island of Javaus in the Indian Ocean. He said she had been kidnapped by pirates, and escaped by jumping overboard and swimming ashore.
Impressed by their guest's royal background, the Worralls announced her presence in newspapers. The news spread fast, and for weeks admirers visited the Worralls' home. Baker put on a show, praying to her god 'Alla Tallah,' climbing trees, and swimming naked.
Discovery
Alas, Princess Caraboo's charade didn't last forever. A woman named Mrs. Neale recognized a description of Caraboo in a newspaper, and realized that Caraboo was her former servant. Working in Mrs. Neale's home, Baker has made up nonsense languages to entertain the children. Finally, Baker admitted that Princess Caraboo was an act.
The Worralls shipped Baker off to Philadelphia, where she attempted the Princess Caraboo act yet again. Legend has it that on the way she even stopped off at the Island of Helena, to visit Napoleon in exile. After seven years, she returned to England. In 1828, going by the name Mary Burgess

To summarize: Why me.
I noted earlier in a blog post that my blog is boring.
I started reading it one day recently while trying to maintain the mindset of a person who had just started reading my blog.
People are going to read one blog post and if they continue then presumably they will click the link at the bottom of the page at the end of the blog post.
One of those links reads "Newer Post" and the other one reads "Older Post." In the middle of those two links is one that read "Home" and that will take you to the page with the latest blog post on it.
So anyway, I was reading back and I thought to myself that my blog is incredibly boring.
But then I got to a post where I reference biological data about Microsoft Bill Gates, specifically about "Jennifer" and "Phoebe," and then suddenly it is not so boring.

Also, after I saw that flag of Turkey, I was reminded of a couple girls Mogge and I were hanging out with one day in Italy. We met them while we were visting Pompeii. The Wainwright was in nearby Naples. There is something about them that I associate with Turkey. They had either just come from there or they were on their way there.

Who was that 3rd person that was with Mogge and me in Pompeii? I would have said it was Larry Johnson but seeing this photo of him at Pompeii, I am not sure if he was with us. Maybe it was just Mogge and me with those two woman we me from Britain.

I "remember" talking to Larry when Mogge and I were there but I don't think he was running with us that day. I am confused about whether there was 3 of us. I can still visulize a few of the photos I took that day as well as many other details from that day.

POZZUOLI, Italy — Across the bay of Naples from Pompeii, where thousands were incinerated by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., lies a hidden "super volcano" that could kill millions in a catastrophe many times worse, scientists say.
The boiling mud and sulphurous steam holes of the area west of Naples known as the Campi Flegrei or Phlegraean Fields, from the Greek word for burning, are a major tourist attraction.
But the zone of intense seismic activity, which the ancients thought was the entrance to hell, also could pose a danger of global proportions with millions of people literally living on top of a potential future volcanic eruption.
"These areas can give rise to the only eruptions that can have global catastrophic effects comparable to major meteorite impacts," said Giuseppe De Natale, head of a project to drill deep under the Earth to monitor the molten "caldera."
One such meteorite impact is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago when debris thrown into the atmosphere from the huge explosion plunged the Earth into darkness.
Scientists plan to drill 3.5 km (2.2 miles) below the surface to monitor the huge chamber of molten rock near Pompeii and give early warning of any eruption from a 13-km-wide collapsed volcanic caldera.

Benedetto De Vivo, a geochemist at Naples University, has said the drilling could cause an explosion.
The Naples city council blocked the project in 2010 but it resumed on the site of an abandoned steel mill at Bagnoli, west of Naples, late last month after the recently elected new mayor, Luigi De Magistris, gave the go-ahead.
De Natale scoffed at the objections, saying that the drilling was perfectly safe and that similar probes had been sent down by mining projects looking for sources of thermal energy in the 1980s and earlier.
"There were dozens of drillings in the past, with much less secure instruments, for industrial motives and nobody said anything," he said.
He added that those raising objections were not experts on drilling and that their suggestions of potential earthquakes or escapes of magma or liquid molten rock had been exaggerated by the local media.
"Some of the things they suggested are laughable," he said, adding that the project's priority will be scientific knowledge and safety of the local population rather than industrial exploitation as in the past.

When Jason came to know of this, Medea was already gone; carried by a chariot drawn by dragons, she fled to Athens. Jason cursed her, never himself, for what came to be.
Later Jason and Peleus, father of the hero Achilles, would attack and defeat Acastus, reclaiming the throne of Iolcus for himself once more. Jason's son, Thessalus, then became king.
Because he broke his vow to love Medea forever, Jason lost his favor with Hera and died lonely and unhappy. He was asleep under the stern of the rotting Argo when it fell on him, killing him instantly. The manner of his death was due to the deities cursing him for breaking his promise to Medea.

Well, that's screwed up. I don't think there is anything in my journal more than that about Pompeii in Italy. I so vividly recall my senior year at Ashdown High School graduating in the year 1984. Jimmi Ann Armstrong's mother, as I recall returned to teaching school and she was the teacher for my Advanced English, or whatever it was called, class, and I recall thinking sitting there in her class
So anyway, Mrs. Armstrong had us assigned to write, as best I recall now, before our graduation in 1984 about our future plans and I can distinctly recall writing about how I was already enlisted in the United States Navy and about the places I wanted to travel to. I had no interest in going to college and I suspect now factors motivating me included how I had already worked for over three years at Mills Store in Wilton Arkansas and I think now I wrote about how I was looking forward to working in the Advanced Electronics Field in the United States Navy. The recruiter didn't have to try that hard to sell me on the US Navy. He simply mentioned, it seems now, that I was eligible for the Electronics Technician occupational rating, which required slightly more basic training than the Fire Control Technician rating and that was it for me. I was the leader of the delayed enlisted program group and I can still visualize me and that recruiter as he taught me, during my senior year of high school, the paperwork of the US Navy and I can still recall calling on the telephone to DEP members who were junior to me and as I organized meetings for us and the recruiter's station in Ashdown. One day, for some reason, I breezed through a stop-light in Ashdown Arkansas and I screeched my big tires in my blue 1967 Chevrolet pickup truck and a city police officer was sitting right next to the intersection and he called me over to talk to him and he asked me about why I skidded to a stop and I told him I was on my way to Texarkana for a meeting and he let me go and told me something I don't recall now but which was probably simply to slow down.
But then I look at it now just before posting, as the hyperlinks are usually the final details I reference before posting, and I see there is no stoplight there in the Google Streetview image, which seems to be fairly new because the image quality is fairly good, although in the wrong lane, and then that makes me think that that memory is 1984 is back when that stoplight was brand-new at that intersection. So that would suggest they sometime later dismantled that stoplight at that particular intersection. I haven't operated an automobile on the city streets of Ashdown Arkansas since the late 1990s. When was the last time I drove around there? I know I drove there in 1995. 1996 I have written I must have been there that year for Caitlin's birthday. That almost slipped my mind just now as I was about to make this posting. So I really don't know. My memories can be largely associated with other details. Reinforced by other details. For example, I really wish I had copies of all those photos Melissa has, such as my school yearbooks.
Those aren't my pictures of Pompeii on the veterans website but I did take pictures very similar to those, all lost now.
