Utah's Ironman Competition

June 21, 2001--

Utah County today won a bid to host the North America Ironman competition. It's a grueling event, involving more than 138 miles in one day, through swimming, bicycling and running.

Central Utah Correspondent Sam Penrod shows us more about the event and what it will bring to Utah.

Utah County today won a bid out of six finalists to host the Western Ironman Competition for the next five years. The debut competition, next summer, Saturday June 8th.

Shane Facteau/Ironman North America: "GREAT VENUES, THE SCENIC BEAUTY IS ALMOST UNMATCHED ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES, AND A GREAT COMMUNITY, THE COMMITMENT WAS MADE BY THE CITY, COUNTY AND UNIVERSITIES AND NOW WE'RE COMMITTED TO YOU FOR FIVE YEARS."

Ironman Utah is expected to attract 17- hundred athletes each year, who will begin training on the course a week before the competition. At seven in the morning, they'll start out with a two and a half mile swim in Utah Lake.

Matt Starley/Utah County Convention and Visitors Bureau: "PEOPLE SEEM SCARED OF THAT THOUGHT BUT JUST SO YOU KNOW AND SO YOU CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE, WE'VE RESEARCHED THE LAKE IT IS CLEAN, IN FACT IT'S CLEANER THAT LAKE POWELL."

Cycling comes next and Ironman competitiors will have to ride a 112 mile course, that will take them through Provo Canyon. The final event, a full 26 mile marathon, running through Utah County. The average race time is ten hours, although athletes have until midnight to finish.

Gary Herbert/Utah County Commissioner: "EVERYBODY WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE, WE'RE GOING TO NEED 1700 TO 2000 VOLUNTEERS TO GET THE THING OPERATING."

Sam Penrod/Eyewitness News: "LOCAL ORGANIZERS SAY THEY ARE EXCITED FOR THIS EVENT, NOT ONLY WILL IT BRING NATIONAL ATTENTION TO THE AREA, BUT ALSO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY."

Ironman Utah is expected to bring in five million dollars each of the five years, money spent by athletes and spectators on hotels, restaurants and other shopping attractions.

ESPN will broadcast the event and the top 80- Utah Ironmen competitors will qualify for the World Ironman Competition in Hawaii next fall. Sam Penrod, Eyewitness News, Provo.

The Ironman That Wasn’t: Tragedy Hits Utah July 6, 2002 By Kristen McFarland 2002 Ironman Utah

ISSUE #16, June/July 2002 – The inaugural Ironman Utah race in Provo, Utah on Saturday, June 8th, had a very tragic start and ended up not being an Ironman at all. The waters of Lake Utah had turned very choppy overnight as a stiff wind kicked up in the valley from a weather front moving in. The course was an out and back loop around a jetty that stretched out about three hundred yards into the loop. As the swimmers entered the water they faced waves a couple of feet high pushing them back and to their left, towards the jetty. About ten minutes before the gun was to go off the sun rose over the high mountains to the east of town. The winds suddenly doubled and so did the height of the waves. At this point most of the athletes were in the water waiting to start.

The waters of the lake are not clear on a calm day. The heavy silt from the clay soil combined with green algae make it so you can’t see your hand in front of your face under the water. When the water started getting rougher and rougher no one could see anything, the buoys, the kayaks, nothing. Before the gun even went off the swimmers were being pushed into the rocks of the jetty. The race was started at about 6:53, presumably because the race officials noticed that the athletes were getting swept in while they treaded water and they wanted to let them start swimming out. The officials later said that it was because they had decided to let a false start go ahead, since they knew the swimmers couldn’t hear anything out there. Because of the wind and the waves, Tony DeBoom didn’t even hear the gun and tried to stop the oncoming swimmers based on the time on his watch.

“I never heard a thing, never heard a cannon or anything. I just looked back and saw all of these people swimming at me and I actually tried to stop them because I looked at my watch and it said like seven fifty-two. So I tried to stop people, and that was kind of worthless, so I just started swimming.”

Then things just got uglier. The strength of the wind kept increasing and as the athletes tried to negotiate the course the relatively weaker swimmers were swept into the rocks of the jetty and couldn’t even stay out on the course. Incredibly discouraged, these athletes started giving up and climbing out of the water. Spectators along the jetty helped them get over the sharp rocks. Dozens of stunned triathletes sat there and shook their heads in disbelief as they realized their race was over before it had begun. Word came from race officials that an unofficial duathlon was going to start at 9:00 for those who couldn’t make it out in the swim. Then screams for help started coming from the water and some athletes started to drag fellow triathletes in distress from the water. A kayak capsized and four people and its owner clung to it for safety. Others clung to the buoys. Swimmers who had made it past the end of the jetty were being blown all the way across the far side of the course, past the return buoys.

The scene was almost as scary for the spectators on the jetty as it was for the athletes in the water. It was chaos, and the kayakers that were there for the safety of the swimmers couldn’t even keep control of their crafts in the winds. The cameraman in the helicopter said that swimmers were seen going in every possible direction. Ironman North America director Graham Frasier and World Triathlon Corporation director Lew Friedland came down to the end of the jetty.

“Get them out of the water, NOW!,” Lew yelled into his radio as the two of them surveyed the situation. Powerboats were immediately dispatched and started plucking people out and bringing loads in to shore and then going back out. To a degree, word spread in the water as athletes started to swim back in also.

THE BIGGEST LITTLE CIA SHOP YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

BY JEFF STEIN ON 11/14/13 AT 5:36 PM

NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 9: A man walks along Wall Street in Manhattan on October 9, 2012 in New York City. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli will release his annual report on employment and earnings October 9, in New York' City's financial industry, one of the worlds largest. While employment is still down thousands of positions since the economic crisis of 2008, DiNapoli has said that last year the sector employed 166,600 people in hedge funds, investment banks and securities trading firms. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

A few years ago, an American company placed a want ad for an aerospace engineering consultant in an Asian newspaper. It quickly drew a flurry of applicants - one of whom was just the kind of person the company was looking for: someone who worked in that country's missile program, someone who was a little sleazy, someone looking to make a little cash on the side.

This was a CIA front operation, and soon that eager applicant was supplying the spy agency with details on his country's ballistic missile program.

That kind of covert activity is a specialty of the CIA's National Resources Division, a little-known, U.S.-based component of the agency's National Clandestine Service.

The CIA's main business is sending operatives abroad to recruit spies and, especially since 9/11, chasing down terrorists for its target-hungry drone pilots. But NR, as it's known, is the agency's stay-at-home division. It's nothing like Homeland, however, with operatives running about with guns in the D.C. suburbs (though its 1960s-era predecessors once spied on antiwar and civil rights activists and recruited Cuban exiles to harass Fidel Castro). It also works with the FBI and NSA in bugging foreign diplomatic missions there.

Think of it as a more cuddly CIA. Its main business is to openly gather information from Americans who've traveled to places the CIA is interested in, particularly hard targets like North Korea, and to inveigle foreigners in the U.S. - officials, scientists and students - into spying when they return home.

For the men (and women) of the CIA's principal espionage corps, working abroad under cover, often in some of the world's nastiest neighborhoods, National Resources looks like the country club of Spy-Ville, a 9-to-5 domestic job, free of risk and stress, a refuge for the lazy, the incompetents and the burnouts.

"We look down on NR: You're a slacker, you're going home every night and watching TV, while I'm here in Moscow with the Russians looking up my ass with a microscope. We're not working for the same organization," says one veteran overseas operative, echoing a common view. "In Moscow, Beijing, Delhi, whatever, I'm not only living in rotten conditions, I've got a hostile intelligence service following me around."

'There is no God,' says Stephen Hawking in final book

By Rob Picheta, CNN

Updated 1:51 PM ET, Tue October 16, 2018

London (CNN) There is no God -- that's the conclusion of the celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking, whose final book is published Tuesday.

The book, which was completed by his family after his death, presents answers to the questions that Hawking said he received most during his time on Earth.

Other bombshells the British scientist left his readers with include the belief that alien life is out there, artificial intelligence could outsmart humans and time travel can't be ruled out.

Hawking, considered one of the most brilliant scientists of his generation, died in March at the age of 76.

"There is no God. No one directs the universe," he writes in "Brief Answers to the Big Questions."

"For centuries, it was believed that disabled people like me were living under a curse that was inflicted by God," he adds. "I prefer to think that everything can be explained another way, by the laws of nature."

Hawking suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, for most of his adult life.

The scientist died while still working on the book, which his family and colleagues finished with the help of his vast personal archives.

'Increasingly looking inward'

While Hawking spoke of his lack of belief in God during his life, several of his other answers are more surprising.

"There are forms of intelligent life out there," he writes. "We need to be wary of answering back until we have developed a bit further."

And he leaves open the possibility of other phenomena.

"Travel back in time can't be ruled out according to our present understanding," he says. He also predicts that "within the next hundred years we will be able to travel to anywhere in the Solar System."

"He realized that people specifically wanted his answers to these questions," the scientist's daughter, Lucy Hawking, who helped complete the book, told CNN.

Hawking saw the world on the brink of a "vast transformative change" when he died, she noted, adding: "He's asking us not to go into the future blindly. How good is the track record of the human race in using advances in technology for the good of ordinary people?"

In remarks prepared by Hawking and played at the launch of the book in London on Monday, the scientist also turned his attention to the world he was leaving behind.

"With Brexit and Trump now exerting new forces in relation to immigration and the development of education, we are witnessing a global revolt against experts, and that includes scientists," Hawking said.

Hawking had been a critic of the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union, and called Donald Trump a "demagogue" in 2016.

His greatest concern, his daughter said, "is how divided we've become," adding: "He makes this comment about how we seem to have lost the ability to look outward, and we are increasingly looking inward to ourselves."

Hawking's final message to readers, though, is a hopeful one.

Attempting to answer the question "How do we shape the future?" in the book's final chapter, the scientist writes: "Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet."

EAGLES LYRICS

"Hotel California"

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice

Title: Oingo Boingo - Dead Mans Party lyrics

I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder

Waiting for an invitation to arrive
Goin' to a party where no one's still alive

Chorus
I was struck by lighting
Walkin' down the street
I was hit by something last night in my sleep
It's a dead man's party
Who could ask for more
Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door
Leave your body and soul at the door . . .
(don't run away it's only me)

All dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man
Waitin' for an invitation to arrive
With a dead man . . . dead man . . .

Got my best suit and my tie
Shiny silver dollar on either eye
I hear the chauffeur comin' to the door
Says there's room for maybe just one more . . .

Chorus

Don't run away it's only me
Don't be afraid of what you can't see
Don't run away it's only me . . .

RIKER: Doctor, tomorrow morning when they detect the warp signature from your ship and realise that humans have discovered how to travel faster than light, they decide to alter their course and make first contact with Earth, right here.

COCHRANE: Here?

LAFORGE: Uh, actually over there.

RIKER: It is one of the pivotal moments in human history, Doctor. You get to make first contact with an alien race, and after you do, everything begins to change.

LAFORGE: Your theories on warp drive allow fleets of starships to be built and mankind to start exploring the Galaxy.

TROI: It unites humanity in a way no one ever thought possible when they realise they're not alone in the universe. Poverty, disease, war. They'll all be gone within the next fifty years.

RIKER: But unless you make that warp flight tomorrow morning before eleven fifteen, none of it will happen.

COCHRANE: And you people, you're all astronauts, ... on some kind of star trek?

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 02/28/09 8:46 AM
That damned restaraunt next to the bank hardly even bothered to cook my breakfast. It was digusting. The other waitress that I told about because the order waitress had not come back by said something about the cooks needing to drink coffee. That place always creeps me out anyway with those people in there but goddamnit I am sick of having to eat the same thing all the time.

"Third Planet"

Everything that keeps me together is falling apart
I got this thing that I consider my only art
Of fucking people over

My boss just quit the job
Says he's going out to find blind spots
And he'll do it

The third planet is sure that they're being watched
By an eye in the sky that can't be stopped
When you get to the promised land
You're gonna shake the eye's hand

Your heart felt good
It was drippin' pitch and made of wood
And your hands and knees
Felt cold and wet on the grass beneath
Well, outside, naked, shivering, looking blue
From the cold sunlight that's reflecting off the moon
And they become angels, fly around you
Reminding you we used to be three and not just two
And that's how the world began
And that's how the world will end

Well, a third had just been made
And we were swimming in the water
Didn't know then; was it a son, was it a daughter
And it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies
And another had been found, another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic, and how

Well the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
And the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth

Your heart felt good
It was drippin' pitch and made of wood
And your hands and knees
Felt cold and wet on the grass beneath
Well, outside, naked, shivering, looking blue
From the cold sunlight that's reflecting off the moon
And they become angels, fly around you
Reminding you we used to be three and not just two
And that's how the world began
And that's how the world will end

Well, a third had just been made
And we were swimming in the water
Didn't know then; was it a son, was it a daughter
And it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies
And another had been found, another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic, and how

Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
And the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were
