Cancellation and renewal
On May 11, 2018, Syfy did not purchase the rights for future seasons, because of reportedly restrictive distribution arrangements, and announced it was cancelled. Alcon looked for other channels to distribute future seasons.
Fans protested the cancellation, gathering over 100,000 signatures for an online petition. They lobbied Amazon Studios and Netflix to pick the series up; a crowdfunding campaign paid for an airplane to fly a "#SaveTheExpanse" banner around Amazon Studios. Celebrities including Wil Wheaton, George R. R. Martin, Patton Oswalt and Andreas Mogensen supported the campaign.
On May 26, at the International Space Development Conference, Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon picked the series up for additional seasons.

Uneaten food is dumped on the street — a salad platter was recently splattered on the asphalt — and discarded clothing piles up only to be swirled into rats' nests.
Those rats, experts say, are likely contributing to the growing number of typhus infections cropping up on skid row and other parts of the region. The disease is spread by fleas, which are carried by rats, opossums and pets.
"You have constant activity that serves as a breeding ground for rats," said Estela Lopez, executive director of the Central City East Association, a business improvement district that overlaps skid row.
Los Angeles County's typhus outbreak, which began in the summer, has expanded to as many as 92 cases, including 20 in Pasadena and a possible 18 in Long Beach, where five were still under investigation by the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services.
The average number of typhus cases the county sees in a year is 60, which itself has doubled in recent years, according to the Los Angeles County Health Department.
City officials recently declared downtown's skid row — roughly 54 square blocks where more than 4,000 homeless congregate — a "typhus zone."

"With increased rat density, diseases like typhus are very likely to occur," said Dr. Lee W. Riley, an infectious disease researcher at the University of California, Berkeley.
A typhus infection can cause high fever, headache, chills and, in rare cases, meningitis and death. It's contracted when "the feces from infected fleas are rubbed into cuts or scrapes in the skin or rubbed into the eyes," the county health department says on its website.
"We're deploying every available resource to help control and stop this outbreak," said Alex Comisar, spokesman for Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "The city and county have formed a dedicated task force ... and we’re putting new funding into intensifying cleanups in the affected area so that we can keep our streets and sidewalks safe for everyone."
County health officials declined to comment.
Downtown's rat problem was exposed last week by NBC News' Los Angeles affiliate, KNBC, which documented piles of uncollected trash around Ceres Avenue on skid row. The station reported that despite 2,200 calls to a city help line in the last two years by people requesting trash pickup in the area, the city responded to less than half the complaints.
It's a situation Garcetti called "disgusting and it's unacceptable."
Los Angeles County Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn are expected to introduce a motion Tuesday that would create the Housing for Public Health program, a coordinated effort to reduce the spread of typhus and other diseases on skid row by cleaning, housing and educating the homeless.
Barger and Hahn introduced a motion last week to "seek flea collar donations that can be distributed to homeless individuals that have pets."
Lopez, of the Central City East Association, said "illegally dumping, food being discarded, accumulation of blankets and pillows, and human waste" is creating "Third World conditions."
"There’s definitely an abundance of rats and roaches and horrible condition."
At the Midnight Mission, which serves three meals a day to as many as 1,000 people, the scene outside its doors can be chaotic.
"If you walk out of our building, you’re faced with the threat of assault, drug dealing and trash everywhere," said Georgia Berkovich, the nonprofit's director of public affairs.
Jerry Jones, public policy director at the Inner City Law Center, called the squalor and inhumanity on the streets "shocking" and "surreal."
"There’s definitely an abundance of rats and roaches and horrible conditions," he said.
Social service providers say the county and city could reduce human waste by installing more 24-hour public bathrooms in an area that has only two. They also blame charities for handing out food and clothing that ends up being dumped on the spot, attracting rats.
On Saturday, nearly a dozen people from a local church handed out food on Ceres Avenue, which KNBC identified as a hot spot for rats. Volunteer Karina Dominguez-Gonzalez said the nondenominational group was careful to hand out only peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches in paper bags to those who asked.
She said she's seen other organizations put boxes of food "on the sidewalk, like people are going to rush in like animals."
In response to rats, trash and typhus, Garcetti recently dedicated another $300,000 to fortifying trash pickup, sidewalk washing and street cleaning in the skid row neighborhood that's home to an estimated 2,145 people living outdoors.
Each street in the area is visited by cleanup crews once every two weeks under the six-year-old Operation Healthy Streets initiative, according to Garcetti's office. But because of the typhus outbreak, the cleanups have been expanded from a nine-block area to 25 blocks, city officials said.
Nonetheless, the city's efforts are limited by litigation.
After being sued by homeless plaintiffs over the Los Angeles Police Department's sidewalk sweeps, officials agreed in 2007 to not remove people from sidewalks between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and to not trash a limited amount of their personal belongings.
In 2012, the rats nests, human waste and hypodermic needles got so bad on skid row that county health officials cited the city for health code violations and filthy conditions that the county later said contributed to a Hepatitis A outbreak.
The city responded by launching Operation Healthy Streets, but since then homelessness has exploded, increasing 47 percent from 2012, according to data from the county Homeless Services Authority. Many experts blame exorbitant housing costs.
The median rent for an apartment in Los Angeles is $2,483, which over 12 months comes to more than the individual median income of $29,301 for the county, according to data cited by the University of Southern California's Center for Social Innovation.
Activist "General" Jeff Page, who lives on skid row, fears the city is using the typhus outbreak as an excuse to push out the homeless and make the area more amenable to gentrification.
"They could be using typhus as a scam to rid the sidewalks of people," he said.
But there's often nowhere for them to go.
"Cities aren’t willing to get their rental markets under control," said Jones, of the Inner City Law Center. "Until we build more housing, the squalor on skid row will continue."
Back on Ceres Avenue, Steve Jordan, 53, who said he's been living on the streets for two years, stood next to a tent covered by an American flag-themed blanket.
"We got wet," he said, referring to overnight rain. "I have a tent with a hole in it. Please help me, man."
A companion who identified herself as Natasha Armstrong spoke incoherently at times. She patted her bulbous belly and nodded when asked if she was pregnant.
Her fetus, she said, was "a rat in my stomach."

On Eros, Miller finds the crew of the Roci at a hotel where Lionel Polanski was listed as a guest. In Polanski's room, they find the body of Julie Mao covered in a strange organic growth. On her phone, Miller finds logs detailing the progression of her affliction, which seems to be fueled by exposure to energy and radiation, and the coordinates of an asteroid where one of the ships that attacked the Cant is docked. Before they can leave the station, a radiation alert is declared and station security begins herding people into radiation shelters. Miller recognizes some of the security officers as criminals from Ceres, who are wearing the missing Star Helix riot gear. He and Holden stay behind to investigate while the rest of the crew is sent back to the Roci. They discover that the people in the shelters have been dosed with an unknown substance and exposed to extremely high levels of radiation. As they make their way to the docks, they realize that the people in the shelters were infected with the same organism as Julie and the radiation was used to feed its rapid growth. They witness the infected attacking the security forces and spreading the infection to anyone who had been able to avoid the radiation chambers. They escape Eros just as it is being overrun.

How much do we really know about the origin and spread of the 1918 flu pandemic? Comparisons with other pandemics reveal patterns and lingering mysteries.
On March 9, 1918, despite an impending dust storm, standard practice at Camp Funston was followed and the manure was burnt. The result was a stinging yellow haze with the sun going “dead black.” Or so it is said. There had been similar days at Funston in the past and presumably elsewhere, but this event (if it actually occurred as related) was remembered as particularly severe, and the clean-up that night supposedly involved a hundred men and many hours of raking and sweeping.
According to some websites, it was two days later, “shortly before breakfast March 11th,” that Company cook Albert Gitchell reported to the infirmary with a “bad cold.” The March 11th date is most probably incorrect, however, and is perhaps a storyteller’s concoction intended to tie in with the account of the manure-burning.

"Political criteria for scientific tests-what are we coming to?" the man asked with another chuckle.
"Well, if they're going to live, they might as well be people we can get along with," Archer observed.
"True." A nod. "How confident are you with -B?"
"Very. I expect it to be about ninety-seven percent effective, perhaps a little better," she added conservatively.
"But not a hundred?"
"No, Shiva's a little too nasty for that," Archer told him. "The animal testing is a little crude, I admit, but the results follow the computer model almost exactly, well within the testing-error criteria. Steve's been pretty good on that side."
"Berg's pretty smart," the other doctor agreed. Then he shifted in his chair. "You know, Barb, what we're doing here isn't exactly-"
"I know that," she assured him. "But we all knew that coming in."
"True." He nodded submission, annoyed at himself for the second thoughts. Well, his family would survive, and they all shared his love of the world and its many sorts of inhabitants. Still, these two people on the TV, they were humans, just like himself, and he'd just peeped in on them like some sort of pervert. Oh, yeah, they'd only done it because both were loaded with drugs fed to them through their food or in pill form, but they were both sentenced to death and

"I won't have to watch them. " Being a voyeur wasn't his idea of fun, and he'd told himself often enough that he wouldn't have to watch what he'd be helping to start.
"No, but we'll know about it. It'll be on the TV news, won't it? But then it will be too late, and if they find out, their last conscious act will be to come after us. That's -he part that has me worried."

"The Interleukin isn't doing anything," John Killgore said, looking away from the monitor. The screen of the electron microscope was clear. The Shiva strands were reproducing merrily away, devouring healthy tissue in the process.
"So?" Dr. Archer asked.
"So, that's the only treatment option I was worried about: -3a is an exciting new development, but Shiva just laughs at it and moves on. This is one scary little mother of a bug, Barb."
"And the subjects?"
"I was just in there. Pete's a goner, so are the rest. The Shiva's eating them up. They all have major internal bleeds, and nothing is stopping the tissue breakdown. I've tried everything in the book. These poor bastards wouldn't be getting better treatment at Hopkins, Harvard, or the Mayo Clinic, and they're all going to die. Now," he allowed, "there will be some whose immune systems can deal with it, but that's going to be pretty damned rare."
"-How rare?" she asked the epidemiologist.
"Less than one in a thousand, probably, maybe one in ten thousand. Even the pneumonic variant of plague doesn't kill everybody," he reminded her. That was about the most lethal disease on the planet, and allowed only one in ten thousand to survive. Some people, she knew, had immune systems that killed everything that didn't belong. Those were the ones who lived to a hundred years of age or so. It had nothing to do with smoking, not smoking. having a drink in the morning, or any of the other rubbish they published in the papers as the secret of living forever. It was all in the genes. Some were better than others. It was that simple.
"Well, that's not really something to worry about. is it?"
