WASHINGTON — House Judiciary Committee Democrats are calling for an independent special counsel to investigate evidence of President Donald Trump’s alleged criminal ties to Jeffrey Epstein, according to a new report made public Monday.
“The bottom line,” they wrote in the report, “There is more than sufficient evidence to launch a criminal investigation.”
They acknowledged the Justice Department under Trump would be unlikely to appoint a special counsel, — such as Robert Mueller who ran the Russia investigation or Jack Smith, who led the investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the lead-up to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The president has repeatedly denied any knowledge of, or involvement in, Epstein’s criminal activity and said he cut ties well before allegations of sex trafficking by the financier became public.
“None of these allegations are true. This ‘report’ is nothing more than a desperate attempt by crazed Democrats to distract Americans from the surging Republican momentum driven by President Trump’s historic achievements,” said Lauren Bis, a White House spokeswoman. “The President kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club at Mar-a-Lago because he was a creep.”
The report comes on the brink of the midterm elections, when Democrats are hoping to seize control of Congress as the president’s approval rating tanks over the economy, affordability and the war with Iran. The report signaled an avenue of focus for lawmakers in January should Democrats win a chamber of Congress.
A bipartisan law signed by Congress last November ordered the release of millions of documents related to the case against Epstein, who died by suicide in jail while awaiting federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Many of America’s wealthy and powerful appear in the files, including Trump, who is mentioned thousands of times.
But only one person was ever convicted, Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. No one else has been charged in the United States.
Right now, Democratic oversight efforts have been limited because they are in the minority in Congress, unable to compel witness testimony or solicit documents through subpoena without the help of Republicans. While the Republican-led House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed several Epstein associates and Republicans helped to pass the Epstein Transparency Act, they have been largely unwilling to look deeper into Trump’s ties to the late sex offender.
Democrats’ power would change dramatically should the party win the majority back in either chamber. They would be able to issue subpoenas with or without the help of Republicans. In addition to the Epstein probe, Democratic leaders have promised robust investigations into alleged corruption and grift in Trump’s administration and family businesses.
In their report released Monday, Democrats accuse the Justice Department of obstructing investigations into potential Epstein co-conspirators, including, they say, Trump. The report alleges the DOJ worked to cover up the president’s connections to Epstein, and said an independent special counsel is necessary, because Attorney General Todd Blanche, who was once Trump’s personal attorney, was compromised.
“The women who survived Epstein deserve to be heard, Congress must have the complete files required by law, and an independent special counsel must investigate Epstein’s co-conspirators and DOJ’s cover-up and ensure that state and foreign prosecutors have the evidence they need to pursue justice,” Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the panel’s top Democrat, said in a statement.
The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment Sunday evening on the report.
The Democrats vowed to continue investigating it themselves.
“Given DOJ and FBI’s abdication of their law enforcement duties and prosecutorial ethics, there is little reason to believe this administration will take even this minimal step,” according to the report. “Accordingly, Congress must continue to use its legislative and oversight powers to pursue justice for survivors and bring an end to the Trump Administration’s shameful, bureaucratic, and political cover-up.”

Trump was at one point friends with Epstein. “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy,” Trump told New York magazine in 2002, before there were any public allegations of wrongdoing by the financier. “He’s a lot of fun to be with,” Trump said then. “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 in a Florida state court to felony solicitation of prostitution and procuring minors for prostitution, in a heavily-criticized plea deal. He was sentenced to 18 months, though he served about a year before he was released.
He was arrested in 2019 on a federal sex trafficking conspiracy charge and one count of sex trafficking underage women.

Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D) on Sunday fired back at President Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric toward him, telling supporters that the president will be referring to him as "Senator Mohamed" if he wins in November.
"I get that the president of the United States takes personal offense to my first name," El-Sayed said at a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich. "He doesn't mind as much when it's a shared name from the Saudis who are funding his son-in-law's private equity. Doesn't seem to mind as much when it's the Qataris who are giving him a $400 million private jet. He just seems to have trouble pronouncing it when it's my name."
"But y'all, I don't care how he pronounces my name," he continued. "I don't even care that he remembers my whole name. Because he can just go on and call me 'senator' after November. I will be Senator Mohamed to you, bro."
If elected, El-Sayed would be the first Muslim American to serve in the Senate.
Trump has frequently attacked El-Sayed's faith on the campaign trail, mocking his name and alleging the candidate has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group founded in Egypt that has influenced and supported fundamentalist movements across the region.

The president has accused the Detroit-area physician of being a "terrorist sympathizer" and a "jihadist," calling the Michigan Democrat "Mohamed El-Sayed."
While rallying in Michigan on Sunday for El-Sayed's opponent, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), Trump claimed that El-Sayed would "have to go through a metal detector before he's allowed to go into the Senate."
Trump then likened El-Sayed to the hijackers behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks after introducing speaker David Beamer at the rally. Beamer's son, Todd Beamer, was among the passengers who died on United Flight 93, Reuters reported.
"Twenty-five years later, Michigan needs to stand up and fight just like Todd did to stop a jihadist from walking into the Capitol," Trump said.

For several days the past week I had decided to make another excursion to downtown Spokane.
I have to take 2 metro bus routes to get over there to downtown and then the same 2 to get back and I haven't been downtown Spokane very often, probably about a half-dozen times.
So I had a plan of what I was going to look for but I also wanted my trip to coincide with the day that new snowfall was possible.
The TV news had reported for several days that new snowfall was possible that day Friday so that was the objective of my plan, to travel over there if snowfall looked likely that day.
We've been in somewhat of a snowfall drought so far this season so traveling there made the day seem somewhat more random.
The whole point was to not check the numbers until I got back.
I still remember how suddenly the snowfall arrived yesterday. Perhaps my vantage point on the metro bus diminished that. I couldn't see outside in the direction ahead of the bus. But it was a sudden outburst of snow.
I got off the bus in the south-side of downtown Spokane and after a few steps, my right foot slipped on the sidewalk, looking down, seeming in slow motion to it all, to see a narrow corridor exposing under the snow a shiny gray metal plate.
I didn't fall but, in what seemed to be slow motion, my right-foot was sliding forward and my left-foot planted firmly behind me and I felt my left knee gently reach the pavement and then I reached out to a railing with my right hand and brought myself back up. A few hours later I discovered that astronaut statue.

William H. Gates, the software billionaire and champion of 21st-century technology, has purchased the Bettmann Archive, whose millions of historical photographs are a visual chronicle of the 20th century.
For the last few years, Mr. Gates, the chairman of the Microsoft Corporation, has been acquiring the electronic rights to thousands of images -- mainly works of art -- through a small company in Bellevue, Wash., that he owns. But the purchase of Bettmann, announced yesterday, is by far his biggest step toward building a huge library of digitally stored images that can someday be sampled and sold on computer disks or over computer networks, not only to professionals but to the public as well.
The Bettmann acquisition is also part of the trend of converting the pictures, artworks and texts of the past into the digital code of computers. The goal is being pursued by museums and libraries throughout the world, though the process is often slow and costly.

What an unusal dream. I can't even begin to describe it. All I remember is that it was about Phoebe and there was a lot of detail to it. It was about this puzzle I was trying to put together. But it is as though I was given strict orders to forget what I had been dreaming of; to not remember the details when I woke up.

NANCY: Thank you.
KIRK: You'll find I have a very low tolerance level where the safety of my people are concerned. We find you out here, where no human has any business being. We were virtually hijacked in space and brought here. Now I'm not just requesting an explanation, Mister. I'm demanding one.
COCHRANE: All right. It was the Companion.
KIRK: The what?
COCHRANE: That's what I call it. As a matter of fact, Captain, I didn't crash here. I was brought here in my disabled ship. I was almost dead. The Companion saved my life.
SPOCK: You were injured?
COCHRANE: I was dying, Mister Spock.
KIRK: You seem perfectly all right now. What was the matter?
COCHRANE: I was an old man.
KIRK: You were what?
COCHRANE: Well, I don't know how it did it, but the Companion rejuvenated me, made me young again, like I am now.
SPOCK: I prefer to reserve judgment on that part of your story
Dr. MCCOY: Talks a lot, but he doesn't say much.
KIRK: I've noticed something else.
MCCOY: What's that?
KIRK: He looks familiar.
