Dolly, the friendly but spoiled sheep whose birth by cloning revolutionized the world's understanding of molecular biology, was put to death Friday after developing a severe lung problem. She was 6, only middle-aged for a sheep, and her death raised fresh questions about the safety of cloning techniques.
In her brief life, Dolly awed veteran scientists, inspired schoolchildren to study biology, touched off worldwide debate about the morality of tinkering with life, provoked legislation in dozens of countries, and set off a political argument that will now outlive her.
Her understanding of all this was limited, naturally, but she was not oblivious to her special role as the world's first clone. She would run to meet photographers toting cameras, put her feet up on a fence, pose for pictures and demand food for her trouble. Like the human for whom she was named, Dolly Parton, she was a diva and a star.
And she suffered for her fame. Dolly ate so much from the hands of visitors that she got fat, even by sheep standards. She contracted arthritis last year, at a young age for a sheep, though it was never clear whether this was from too much picture-posing or from the circumstances of her birth. Dolly suffered other maladies that may, or may not, have been a consequence of her origin.
The Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was created and lived her life, announced she had been put to death Friday afternoon to spare her further suffering. A virus that causes incurable lung cancer in sheep has been spreading at the institute, killing both cloned and normal animals. A lung scan Friday revealed she was seriously afflicted and, without intervention, would die a slow, uncomfortable death.

Goodbye, Dolly; first cloned sheep dies at six years old
On Feb. 23, 1997, a group of scientists in Scotland made an announcement that would forever change the way scientists view mammalian development—they had successfully cloned Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, from an adult cell. Six years later, Dolly is dead and cloned animals are on the verge of revolutionizing food production and modern medicine.
On Feb. 14, 2003, Dolly was euthanatized after veterinarians confirmed she had a progressive lung disease. A necropsy confirmed Dolly had sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, a fairly common disease of sheep, according to a statement from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was cloned and lived.
"Sheep can live to 11 to 12 years of age," said Dr. Harry D. Griffin, the acting director of the Roslin Institute, in a statement. "And lung infections are very common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside (such as Dolly)."
The necropsy also confirmed arthritis in her hind limbs—first reported by the Roslin Institute in 2002—however, there is no evidence cloning led to her ailments.

So you wouldn't find it offensive if I broke your nose one day and then your legs the next day. The law isn't so clear on that either. Sleazeballs like you interefere with people's ability to do their work and you create an environment that disrupts their major life activities. So if you won't change, and you continue to disrupt other peoples major life activities, I should be able to respond appropriately if you do something like that to me. An appropriate response, minimally, is to break your nose and start from there until your "free-thinking" no longer is a disruption to my life.

Dolly, the friendly but spoiled sheep whose birth by cloning revolutionized the world's understanding of molecular biology, was put to death Friday after developing a severe lung problem. A lung scan Friday revealed she was seriously afflicted and, without intervention, would die a slow, uncomfortable death.

Goodbye, Dolly; first cloned sheep dies at six years old
On Feb. 23, 1997, a group of scientists in Scotland made an announcement that would forever change the way scientists view mammalian development—they had successfully cloned Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, from an adult cell. Six years later, Dolly is dead and cloned animals are on the verge of revolutionizing food production and modern medicine.
On Feb. 14, 2003, Dolly was euthanatized after veterinarians confirmed she had a progressive lung disease. A necropsy confirmed Dolly had sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, a fairly common disease of sheep, according to a statement from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was cloned and lived.
"Sheep can live to 11 to 12 years of age," said Dr. Harry D. Griffin, the acting director of the Roslin Institute, in a statement. "And lung infections are very common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside (such as Dolly)."
The necropsy also confirmed arthritis in her hind limbs—first reported by the Roslin Institute in 2002—however, there is no evidence cloning led to her ailments.

JUPITER'S MOON CALLISTO MAY HIDE SALTY OCEAN
Jupiter's second largest moon, Callisto, may have a liquid ocean tucked under its icy, cratered crust, according to scientists studying data gathered by NASA's Galileo spacecraft.
The Galileo findings, to be published in the Oct. 22 issue of the journal Nature, reveal similarities between Callisto and another of Jupiter's moons, Europa, which has already displayed strong evidence of a subsurface ocean.
"Until now, we thought Callisto was a dead and boring moon, just a hunk of rock and ice," said Dr. Margaret Kivelson, space physics professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and principal investigator for Galileo's magnetometer instrument, which measures magnetic fields around Jupiter and its moons. "The new data certainly suggest that something is hidden below Callisto's surface, and that something may very well be a salty ocean."

The natural born sergeant was never disciplined for his actions. I was brought up on charges for striking my squad leader. It started out as a court-martial trial which for InVitros back then, if convicted, meant death by lethal injection. But the Old Man must have had a spark of conscience. Because I only ended up with 120 days in solitary. They say InVitros - Tanks - are disloyal, lazy, and, uh, unable to dream. At 15.30 on Friday 14 February 2003, scientists at the Roslin Institute decided that Dolly, the world's most famous sheep, should be put down. She had been suffering from a progressive lung disease.
Dolly's death, like her birth, is bound to raise fresh fears about the wisdom of cloning.

Dolly, the friendly but spoiled sheep whose birth by cloning revolutionized the world's understanding of molecular biology, was put to death Friday after developing a severe lung problem. She was 6, only middle-aged for a sheep, and her death raised fresh questions about the safety of cloning techniques.
In her brief life, Dolly awed veteran scientists, inspired schoolchildren to study biology, touched off worldwide debate about the morality of tinkering with life, provoked legislation in dozens of countries, and set off a political argument that will now outlive her.
Her understanding of all this was limited, naturally, but she was not oblivious to her special role as the world's first clone. She would run to meet photographers toting cameras, put her feet up on a fence, pose for pictures and demand food for her trouble. Like the human for whom she was named, Dolly Parton, she was a diva and a star.
And she suffered for her fame. Dolly ate so much from the hands of visitors that she got fat, even by sheep standards. She contracted arthritis last year, at a young age for a sheep, though it was never clear whether this was from too much picture-posing or from the circumstances of her birth. Dolly suffered other maladies that may, or may not, have been a consequence of her origin.
The Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was created and lived her life, announced she had been put to death Friday afternoon to spare her further suffering. A virus that causes incurable lung cancer in sheep has been spreading at the institute, killing both cloned and normal animals. A lung scan Friday revealed she was seriously afflicted and, without intervention, would die a slow, uncomfortable death.

Goodbye, Dolly; first cloned sheep dies at six years old
On Feb. 23, 1997, a group of scientists in Scotland made an announcement that would forever change the way scientists view mammalian development—they had successfully cloned Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, from an adult cell. Six years later, Dolly is dead and cloned animals are on the verge of revolutionizing food production and modern medicine.
On Feb. 14, 2003, Dolly was euthanatized after veterinarians confirmed she had a progressive lung disease. A necropsy confirmed Dolly had sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, a fairly common disease of sheep, according to a statement from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was cloned and lived.
"Sheep can live to 11 to 12 years of age," said Dr. Harry D. Griffin, the acting director of the Roslin Institute, in a statement. "And lung infections are very common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside (such as Dolly)."
The necropsy also confirmed arthritis in her hind limbs—first reported by the Roslin Institute in 2002—however, there is no evidence cloning led to her ailments.

In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attack the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor tells that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group; however, they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing was a racially motivated terrorist attack on September 15, 1963, by members of a Ku Klux Klan group in Birmingham, Alabama in the United States. The bombing of the African-American church resulted in the deaths of four girls. Although city leaders had reached a settlement in May with demonstrators and started to integrate public places, not everyone agreed with ending segregation. Other acts of violence followed the settlement. The bombing increased support for people working for civil rights. The three-story Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was a rallying point for civil-rights activities through the spring of 1963. In the early morning of Sunday, September 15, 1963, Bobby Frank Cherry, Thomas Blanton, Herman Frank Cash, and Robert “Dynamite Bob” Chambliss, members of United Klans of America, a Ku Klux Klan group, planted 122 sticks of dynamite with a delayed-time release outside the basement of the church.
At about 10:22 a.m., when twenty-six children were walking into the basement assembly room for closing prayers of a sermon entitled “The Love That Forgives,” the bomb exploded According to an interview on NPR on September 15, 2008, Denise McNair's father stated that the sermon never took place because of the bombing. Four girls, Addie Mae Collins (aged 14), Denise McNair (aged 11), Carole Robertson (aged 14), and Cynthia Wesley (aged 14), were killed in the blast, and 22 additional people were injured, one of whom was Addie Mae Collins' younger sister, Sarah.
The explosion blew a hole in the church's rear wall, destroyed the back steps, and left intact only the frames of all but one stained-glass window.

The widespread disregard for nuclear weapons safety standards by airmen at Minot and Barksdale Air Force bases led to the unprecedented “Bent Spear” incident in which six nuclear warheads were mistakenly loaded onto a B-52 and flown from North Dakota to Louisiana on Aug. 29-30, Air Force officials said Friday after an intensive six-week investigation.
The Air Force relieved the 5th Munitions Squadron commander at Minot immediately after the incident. On Friday, it announced that three more commanders have been sacked.
Five steps to failure
Using the same briefing presented to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates earlier Friday, Newton summarized the five mistakes made by airmen that led to the incident and offered a timeline of events.
The first mistake occurred at the beginning of an operation to transport 12 Advanced Cruise Missiles on a B-52 Stratofortress bomber from Minot to Barksdale, part of a Defense Department program to decommission 400 of these missiles in the U.S. stockpile.
On the morning of Aug. 29, airmen assigned to the Minot weapons storage area were supposed to pick up and transport two pylons to a B-52 assigned to Barksdale. Each pylon is a self-contained package of six cruise missiles that can be quickly mounted to the wing of a Stratofortress. But the pylon had not been properly prepared, and the airmen failed to examine all the warheads on the missiles mounted to the pylons.

NEW YORK - A B-52 bomber mistakenly armed with live nuclear missiles flew straight across the heartland where millions of Americans live - and the crew had no clue what they were carrying.
An Air Force spokesman insisted "there was never a danger to the American public" and called the missile mishap last Thursday an "isolated incident."
"Air Force standards are very exacting when it comes to munitions handling," Lt. Col. Ed Thomas said. "The weapons were always in our custody."
The B-52 was loaded with cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads ranging from 5 to 150 kilotons in destructive force, mounted onto pylons on the bomber's wings, according to the Military Times newspaper, which broke the story.
"You can wipe out a good-sized city with a 5-kiloton blast," said Jim Riccio, a nuclear policy analyst for Greenpeace. "A 150-kiloton warhead is 10 times the size of what they dropped on Hiroshima."

Dolly the sheep RIP
At 15.30 on Friday 14 February 2003, scientists at the Roslin Institute decided that Dolly, the world's most famous sheep, should be put down. She had been suffering from a progressive lung disease.
Dolly's death, like her birth, is bound to raise fresh fears about the wisdom of cloning.

Dolly, the friendly but spoiled sheep whose birth by cloning revolutionized the world's understanding of molecular biology, was put to death Friday after developing a severe lung problem. She was 6, only middle-aged for a sheep, and her death raised fresh questions about the safety of cloning techniques.
In her brief life, Dolly awed veteran scientists, inspired schoolchildren to study biology, touched off worldwide debate about the morality of tinkering with life, provoked legislation in dozens of countries, and set off a political argument that will now outlive her.
Her understanding of all this was limited, naturally, but she was not oblivious to her special role as the world's first clone. She would run to meet photographers toting cameras, put her feet up on a fence, pose for pictures and demand food for her trouble. Like the human for whom she was named, Dolly Parton, she was a diva and a star.
And she suffered for her fame. Dolly ate so much from the hands of visitors that she got fat, even by sheep standards. She contracted arthritis last year, at a young age for a sheep, though it was never clear whether this was from too much picture-posing or from the circumstances of her birth. Dolly suffered other maladies that may, or may not, have been a consequence of her origin.
The Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was created and lived her life, announced she had been put to death Friday afternoon to spare her further suffering. A virus that causes incurable lung cancer in sheep has been spreading at the institute, killing both cloned and normal animals. A lung scan Friday revealed she was seriously afflicted and, without intervention, would die a slow, uncomfortable death.

Goodbye, Dolly; first cloned sheep dies at six years old
On Feb. 23, 1997, a group of scientists in Scotland made an announcement that would forever change the way scientists view mammalian development—they had successfully cloned Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, from an adult cell. Six years later, Dolly is dead and cloned animals are on the verge of revolutionizing food production and modern medicine.
On Feb. 14, 2003, Dolly was euthanatized after veterinarians confirmed she had a progressive lung disease. A necropsy confirmed Dolly had sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, a fairly common disease of sheep, according to a statement from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was cloned and lived.
"Sheep can live to 11 to 12 years of age," said Dr. Harry D. Griffin, the acting director of the Roslin Institute, in a statement. "And lung infections are very common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside (such as Dolly)."
The necropsy also confirmed arthritis in her hind limbs—first reported by the Roslin Institute in 2002—however, there is no evidence cloning led to her ailments.

The Pet Goat
"The Pet Goat" (erroneously known as "My Pet Goat") is a children's story contained in the book Reading Mastery II: Storybook 1, by Siegfried Engelmann and Elaine C. Bruner (ISBN 0-02-686355-3). The book is part of the thirty-one volume Reading Mastery series published by the SRA Macmillan early-childhood education division of McGraw-Hill. It uses the direct instruction teaching style.
The story gained notoriety because U.S. President George W. Bush was reading it with Sarasota, Florida schoolchildren in Emma E. Booker Elementary School at the time at which then-White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informed him of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
On the evening of 9/11 Bush stated:
"Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local rescue efforts."
In Orlando Florida on December 4, 2001, Bush explained:
"Actually I was in a classroom talking about a reading program that works. And I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on, and I used to fly myself, and I said, "There's one terrible pilot." And I said, "It must have been a horrible accident." But I was whisked off there - I didn't have much time to think about it."
Again at a town meeting in Ontario in January 2002:
"first of all, when we walked into the classroom, I had seen this plane fly into the first building. There was a TV set on. And you know, I thought it was pilot error and I was amazed that anybody could make such a terrible mistake. And something was wrong with the plane"
Both statements, however, have been criticized as impossible. The first plane to hit the tower was not shown live.

A series of scenes in the dream just now about football. The notion of Princeton University was strongly present in those series of scenes where I seemed to be on a football team but I think something is askew to all that, in that my soccer team is mixed in to those scenes and I was confusing it with my actual participation on an American football team at U.S. Naval Academy. I did see a scene about a football kicker during an American football game. There was a lot of detail I can still visualize but I do not feel all that compelled to describe the scenes. In the next series of scenes though, I seemed to be walking through an open field and there is a paved road running off to my left and there is open field as far as I can see to the other side of it and I guess to my right side although most of the dream seems to visualize over to what was initially my left-side of visualization. Just after that visualization started, and I note that it seems to be
chronologically after the series of football scenes, I saw the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse in that field on the other side of the paved road and to my minor annoyance, they started charging in my direction and I can visualize that lead Horsemen, but I am left with the vague sense that the Four of them were actually cows that had turned to charge at me. I did some fancy maneuvering and got them going in circles because I could maneuver better than they could but at some point I realized that I was not going to be able to keep that tactic up for very long. As I visualize that scene again now that I am awake, they seemed to have surrounded me. In the next scene though I seemed to have broke away from the Four Bovine of The Apocalypse and I was running flat out across the field at a 45 degree angle ahead of my original line-of-sight and direction of travel and I am vaguely aware of something ahead of me but I cannot visualize it well enough or remember
it well enough to describe. I can remember that I turned around as I was running and threw something back at the lead Cow of The Apocalypse and I struck it squarely on the head and it dropped dead right there on the spot. At that point, I seemed to look back at a bale of hay in the middle of the field, which was the only one in sight, and I thought to myself that I should have stayed near that bale of hay because it was a piece of that bale that I killed the lead Cow of The Apocalypse. But I was still running in that same direction and I cannot really visualize the other Cows of The Apocalypse althought I guess they were back there somewhere in the dust the first Cow kicked up in a field that did not seem that dusty. The detail become very vague at the point where the dreams ends and I vaguely aware of something about how I could get help in fighting off those other three Cows of The Apocalypse if I said I "believed" and so I did say I believed and then
I saw something that I can only describe now vaguely and one of those wagonwheeled-transports, that I think had names such as Conestoga, come traveling by me out in the direction of the other Cows and the wagon seemed to be covered in fire. I think I had stopped running at that point and there are other details about the surroundings that I can still visualize but not well enough to describe and I am left to ponder where I was. As I was writing all this, I remembered there was another series of scenes before the series of scenes about American football and I am left only with the sense of being compelled to remember those scenes and while I can visualize certain details, such as being in a supermarket, I cannot remember enough detail to articulate. I am not certain if those first scenes are connected to the next scenes about the football.

At 15.30 on Friday 14 February 2003, scientists at the Roslin Institute decided that Dolly, the world's most famous sheep, should be put down. She had been suffering from a progressive lung disease.

Dolly, the friendly but spoiled sheep whose birth by cloning revolutionized the world's understanding of molecular biology, was put to death Friday after developing a severe lung problem. She was 6, only middle-aged for a sheep, and her death raised fresh questions about the safety of cloning techniques.
In her brief life, Dolly awed veteran scientists, inspired schoolchildren to study biology, touched off worldwide debate about the morality of tinkering with life, provoked legislation in dozens of countries, and set off a political argument that will now outlive her.
Her understanding of all this was limited, naturally, but she was not oblivious to her special role as the world's first clone. She would run to meet photographers toting cameras, put her feet up on a fence, pose for pictures and demand food for her trouble. Like the human for whom she was named, Dolly Parton, she was a diva and a star.
And she suffered for her fame. Dolly ate so much from the hands of visitors that she got fat, even by sheep standards. She contracted arthritis last year, at a young age for a sheep, though it was never clear whether this was from too much picture-posing or from the circumstances of her birth. Dolly suffered other maladies that may, or may not, have been a consequence of her origin.
The Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was created and lived her life, announced she had been put to death Friday afternoon to spare her further suffering. A virus that causes incurable lung cancer in sheep has been spreading at the institute, killing both cloned and normal animals. A lung scan Friday revealed she was seriously afflicted and, without intervention, would die a slow, uncomfortable death.

Goodbye, Dolly; first cloned sheep dies at six years old
On Feb. 23, 1997, a group of scientists in Scotland made an announcement that would forever change the way scientists view mammalian development—they had successfully cloned Dolly, a Finn Dorset sheep, from an adult cell. Six years later, Dolly is dead and cloned animals are on the verge of revolutionizing food production and modern medicine.
On Feb. 14, 2003, Dolly was euthanatized after veterinarians confirmed she had a progressive lung disease. A necropsy confirmed Dolly had sheep pulmonary adenomatosis, a fairly common disease of sheep, according to a statement from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Dolly was cloned and lived.
"Sheep can live to 11 to 12 years of age," said Dr. Harry D. Griffin, the acting director of the Roslin Institute, in a statement. "And lung infections are very common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside (such as Dolly)."
The necropsy also confirmed arthritis in her hind limbs—first reported by the Roslin Institute in 2002—however, there is no evidence cloning led to her ailments.

And I was thinking about how convincing Kurt Russell's character was in Vanilla Sky as he was arguing that he was a real person.

Great. I just noticed I've got another one of those blood spots in my eye. This time it is the left eye. Must be a burst blood vessel, probably from high blood pressure from having to live in this cage and not getting any exercise. Or I was poisoned again.
