New images of Jupiter's moon Europa, snapped by NASA's Galileo probe, suggest that slush and possibly an ocean of water flows beneath the satellite's fractured, frozen crust, astronomers said Tuesday.
If their preliminary assessments are correct, distant Europa has a warm inner core and liquid water, two key conditions favorable to life.
""Water doesn't equate to life. It certainly is a requirement for life," said Ronald Greeley, an Arizona State University planetary geologist and a member of the $1.4 billion mission's photo analysis team.
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to have liquid water on its surface.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Atlantis astronauts successfully started Galileo on its long journey toward Jupiter late Wednesday
Atlantis soared from its Kennedy Space Center launch pad at 12:53 p.m. (11:53 a.m. Houston time), just three minutes into a 29-minute launch window.
"It was just a good-looking launch," said NASA Deputy Administrator J.R. Thompson.
Aboard Atlantis are mission commander Don Williams, pilot Mike McCulley and mission specialists Franklin Chang-Diaz, Shannon Lucid and Ellen Baker.
After slipping into a 180-mile-high orbit, the shuttle fliers began a series of steps leading to Galileo's much-anticipated debut.
At 7:15 p.m., Galileo and the powerful two-stage rocket booster that was to propel it out of the Earth's gravitational grasp drifted from the payload bay as the shuttle sailed over the west coast of California.
"Galileo is now on its way to another world," Williams said, confirming the deployment.
Firing Atlantis' steering engines, Williams maneuvered his ship a safe distance from the rocket blast that soon would emerge from Galileo's stubby booster.
On schedule an hour later, the booster's first stage fired for 2 1/2 minutes before falling away.
"That sounds like good news," radioed Lucid, who supervised the Galileo rocket operation for the crew, when informed of the successful burn.
Within a few moments, the booster's second stage began a 105-second burn, then Galileo separated from the rocket and broke free of the Earth's bonds, falling toward the sun.
As Galileo sped away, its power booms, scientific instruments and communications antenna unfurled, giving it a buglike appearance.
All the craft's systems appeared to be operating normally, said NASA's Galileo project manager, Richard Spehalski.
The spacecraft's complicated trajectory through the solar system will sling it around Venus in early February. Then, Galileo will swing twice around the Earth - in December 1990 and again in December 1992 - before it veers toward a December 1995 rendezvous with Jupiter.
Each of those planetary "flybys" is intended to give Galileo the momentum required to reach Jupiter, because a launcher with the thrust for a straight shot was not available.

Dr. Glennan accepted the recommendation and established the office on March 1, 1960, naming Dr. Randt as Director. This office was responsible for all biological and medical programs within NASA. DC-10 Commercial Transport
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 was produced in three basic models, the Series 10 for domestic routes to 3,500 miles and the series 30 and 40 for extended range and intercontinental travel. DC-10s were modified as passenger/cargo convertible versions and as the KC-10 aerial tanker for the U.S. Air Force.
In addition to the luxury and spaciousness inherent in its wide cabin, the three-engine DC-10 incorporated improvements in propulsion, aerodynamics, structure, avionics, flight control systems and environmental compatibility that advanced industry standards.
Designed and built in Long Beach, Calif., production was started in January 1968 and first deliveries were in 1971. The last of the giants was delivered in 1990. By 1990, 386 commercial DC-10s were delivered, plus 60 KC-10 tanker/cargo models built for the Air Force.

F-14A: The Beginning
In 1968 the F-14 program was born with the Navy's proposal for the VFX (Navy Fighter Experimental) and resulted in Grumman's general design 303 (see below). The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable geometry wing aircraft. The F-14 was the United States Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1972 to 2006. It later performed precision strike missions once it was integrated with LANTIRN. It was developed after the collapse of the F-111B project, and was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat in Vietnam against MiGs.

Two weeks before he was to graduate from Yale, George Walker Bush stepped into the offices of the Texas Air National Guard at Ellington Field outside Houston and announced that he wanted to sign up for pilot training.
It was May 27, 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. Bush was 12 days away from losing his student deferment from the draft at a time when Americans were dying in combat at the rate of 350 a week. The unit Bush wanted to join offered him the chance to fulfill his military commitment at a base in Texas. It was seen as an escape route from Vietnam by many men his age, and usually had a long waiting list.
Bush had scored only 25 percent on a "pilot aptitude" test, the lowest acceptable grade. But his father was then a congressman from Houston, and the commanders of the Texas Guard clearly had an appreciation of politics.

Shortly after the Four Power Summit in Paris was opened by France's President DeGaulle at 11:00 a.m., Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev demanded the right to speak, and then delivered an angry tirade, which ended with a cancellation of the invitation for President Eisenhower to visit the U.S.S.R. beginning June 10. The summit ended at 2:00 pm, and Khrushchev did not show up for further meetings. Eisenhower, Khrushchev and Britain's Prime Minister Macmillan left France three days later.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the laser, an invention that has changed everything from surgery to grocery-store checkout lines.
The world's first laser — which emitted a coherent energy beam for the first time on May 16, 1960 — is right here in Vancouver, locked away in a safe-deposit box downtown.
In May, it will be brought out of storage to be the star attraction at a conference at Simon Fraser University marking its anniversary.
At that conference, the laser will be hooked up to a power source and fire its beam of light once more. A half century after it made history, the world's first laser still works.
The laser, which was built and tested at a lab in California, came to Vancouver in 1999 along with its inventor, Ted Maiman and his wife Kathleen.
The two had visited Vancouver many times before and enjoyed it so much they decided to move here permanently.
Kathleen Maiman said the genius of her husband's invention was its simplicity.
By the late 1950s, a number of scientists had written papers with theories of how a laser (an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) could be created, using everything from gas vapours to cryogenic technology.
"But they hadn't figured it out yet: how to make a device that would make coherent light, which is one wavelength and one colour," said Kathleen, whose husband died in 2007.
Ted's big idea, she said, was to use something from nature — a ruby — to turn normal, diffuse light into a single, concentrated laser beam.

The Pet Goat
"The Pet Goat" (erroneously known as "My Pet Goat") is a children's story contained in the book Reading Mastery II: Storybook 1, by Siegfried Engelmann and Elaine C. Bruner (ISBN 0-02-686355-3). The book is part of the thirty-one volume Reading Mastery series published by the SRA Macmillan early-childhood education division of McGraw-Hill. It uses the direct instruction teaching style.
The story gained notoriety because U.S. President George W. Bush was reading it with Sarasota, Florida schoolchildren in Emma E. Booker Elementary School at the time at which then-White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informed him of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
On the evening of 9/11 Bush stated:

Scientists in Scotland have announced the birth of the world's first successfully cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep.
Dolly, who was created at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, was actually born on 5 July 1996 although her arrival has only just been revealed.
Dolly is the first mammal to have been successfully cloned from an adult cell. Previous clonings have been from embryo cells.
The sheep's birth has been heralded as one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the decade although it is likely to spark ethical controversy.
Scientists in Scotland cloned a ewe by inserting DNA from a single sheep cell into an egg and implanted it in a surrogate mother.
They now have a healthy seven-month-old sheep - Dolly - who is an exact genetic duplicate of the animal from which the single cell was taken.
DNA tests have revealed that Dolly is identical to the ewe who donated the udder cell and is unrelated to the surrogate mother.

Dr Wilmut also revealed the thinking behind the sheep's name: "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's."

If Dr. Ian Wilmut of Scotland had been an American researcher trying to get a federal grant to clone a sheep - a feat he announced Saturday - the request would not have been approved, experts in the United States say. And not because the work was too scary or controversial. His goal is just too practical, and he comes from the wrong side of the scientific tracks.
Wilmut is from the world of animal science, a parallel universe to the high-profile, high-technology world of molecular biology. And, as became abundantly clear immediately after his announcement, the interests of his field are not those of the biologists who focus on genes and their control, who work with small animals, like mice, and who concentrate on the fine details of molecular interactions inside cells.
Dr. Lee Silver, a biology professor at Princeton University, agreed. "No way can you write a grant proposal saying you want to clone a sheep," he said. Reviewers like himself would immediately ask, "What questions are you asking?" Silver said. It would not be enough for scientists to argue that they simply wanted to make some sheep into drug factories. To get a grant, researchers have to explain how they will study a biological system and how they will take it apart to understand its molecular basis, Silver said.

Researchers Successfully Clone Sheep -- Creating Copies Of Humans Could Be Possible

Scottish researchers have broken one of nature's greatest taboos by cloning a lamb from a single cell of an adult animal, a breakthrough that opens the door to the possibility of cloning humans.
Although the remarkable achievement is being hailed as a potentially great advance in animal agriculture, it could create an ethical quagmire about its use in humans.
The first report of cloning a mammal - making a genetically identical copy from a single body cell - appears in the Feb. 27 issue of the British science journal Nature.
Researchers headed by Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland, showed that a fully differentiated cell from the mammary tissue of a ewe could be manipulated in such a way as to create a genetically identical copy of the animal it was taken from.
The results of the cloning research had been embargoed by the journal Nature until Wednesday. But the Reuters news agency, quoting an author of the study, reported details yesterday.
First said that in the United States there are no laws banning human cloning research, as there are in some European countries.
Thus, if a wealthy person wanted to clone himself, theoretically it could be done, he said.
"A private clinic could set up and clone that person just as nice as could be. There are no rules or restrictions preventing it," he said.
The National Advisory Board on Ethics in Reproduction, which is supported by federal and private money, studied human cloning and concluded that it had no merit for human society, said First, a member of the board.

Wilmut and his team, whose work is to be published Thursday in the journal Nature, pioneered the process of growing an animal identical to its mother from scratch. But the institute has long experience in genetically engineering farm animals. "Trans-genic animals require teamwork between a molecular biologist, an embryologist, great surgical skill, available farmland and skilled husbandry. We have them all," Griffin said.
"This is a world center for excellence. People are attracted here by the high quality of life and exciting science," said Ron James, general manager of PPL Therapeutics, the biotechnology company that shares the one-story institute's campus-like setting about half an hour from Edinburgh. PPL supports Wilmut's research and James is excited at the prospect that genetically engineered sheep could be cloned to expand production of medicines now difficult and expensive to extract.
Some advances will come more quickly than others, he said. "Genetic engineering may be of only limited use . . . but I think we may be seeing disease-resistant animals in a year or two," said James, whose company has an American subsidiary in Virginia.
Anticipating the swirl of ethical concerns raised by Dolly, James and the institute alerted watchdog groups in Britain; Dolly was not to have made her debut until Wednesday, but a major British newspaper broke the news embargo Saturday, Griffin said.

I wonder now why Laura Mason was going on back in 1999 about cloning when we were talking at her desk. I told her I wasn't that impressed. I can't remember exactly what I said about it, but I tried to compare it with replacing the soup in a can marked as tomato soup with another type of soup, leaving the tomato soup label on the can. I am certain it requires a great deal of technical expertise to get it right, but as a concept, I wasn't very impressed. I timestamped that conversation by later sending her a link to an article on stem cells. I suggested that, in light of the progress in that area, she should save her stock options. Her reaction was to seem mildly offended that I was saying she was old. I told her that I was actually suggesting we are going to live longer because of stem cell research and that she should save money to prepare for a longer life.

Scientists in Scotland have announced the birth of the world's first successfully cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep.
Dolly, who was created at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, was actually born on 5 July 1996 although her arrival has only just been revealed.
Dolly is the first mammal to have been successfully cloned from an adult cell. Previous clonings have been from embryo cells.
The sheep's birth has been heralded as one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the decade although it is likely to spark ethical controversy.
Scientists in Scotland cloned a ewe by inserting DNA from a single sheep cell into an egg and implanted it in a surrogate mother.
They now have a healthy seven-month-old sheep - Dolly - who is an exact genetic duplicate of the animal from which the single cell was taken.
DNA tests have revealed that Dolly is identical to the ewe who donated the udder cell and is unrelated to the surrogate mother.

Dr Wilmut also revealed the thinking behind the sheep's name: "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's."

If Dr. Ian Wilmut of Scotland had been an American researcher trying to get a federal grant to clone a sheep - a feat he announced Saturday - the request would not have been approved, experts in the United States say. And not because the work was too scary or controversial. His goal is just too practical, and he comes from the wrong side of the scientific tracks.
Wilmut is from the world of animal science, a parallel universe to the high-profile, high-technology world of molecular biology. And, as became abundantly clear immediately after his announcement, the interests of his field are not those of the biologists who focus on genes and their control, who work with small animals, like mice, and who concentrate on the fine details of molecular interactions inside cells.
Dr. Lee Silver, a biology professor at Princeton University, agreed. "No way can you write a grant proposal saying you want to clone a sheep," he said. Reviewers like himself would immediately ask, "What questions are you asking?" Silver said. It would not be enough for scientists to argue that they simply wanted to make some sheep into drug factories. To get a grant, researchers have to explain how they will study a biological system and how they will take it apart to understand its molecular basis, Silver said.

Researchers Successfully Clone Sheep -- Creating Copies Of Humans Could Be Possible

Scottish researchers have broken one of nature's greatest taboos by cloning a lamb from a single cell of an adult animal, a breakthrough that opens the door to the possibility of cloning humans.
Although the remarkable achievement is being hailed as a potentially great advance in animal agriculture, it could create an ethical quagmire about its use in humans.
The first report of cloning a mammal - making a genetically identical copy from a single body cell - appears in the Feb. 27 issue of the British science journal Nature.
Researchers headed by Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland, showed that a fully differentiated cell from the mammary tissue of a ewe could be manipulated in such a way as to create a genetically identical copy of the animal it was taken from.
The results of the cloning research had been embargoed by the journal Nature until Wednesday. But the Reuters news agency, quoting an author of the study, reported details yesterday.
First said that in the United States there are no laws banning human cloning research, as there are in some European countries.
Thus, if a wealthy person wanted to clone himself, theoretically it could be done, he said.
"A private clinic could set up and clone that person just as nice as could be. There are no rules or restrictions preventing it," he said.
The National Advisory Board on Ethics in Reproduction, which is supported by federal and private money, studied human cloning and concluded that it had no merit for human society, said First, a member of the board.

Wilmut and his team, whose work is to be published Thursday in the journal Nature, pioneered the process of growing an animal identical to its mother from scratch. But the institute has long experience in genetically engineering farm animals. "Trans-genic animals require teamwork between a molecular biologist, an embryologist, great surgical skill, available farmland and skilled husbandry. We have them all," Griffin said.
"This is a world center for excellence. People are attracted here by the high quality of life and exciting science," said Ron James, general manager of PPL Therapeutics, the biotechnology company that shares the one-story institute's campus-like setting about half an hour from Edinburgh. PPL supports Wilmut's research and James is excited at the prospect that genetically engineered sheep could be cloned to expand production of medicines now difficult and expensive to extract.
Some advances will come more quickly than others, he said. "Genetic engineering may be of only limited use . . . but I think we may be seeing disease-resistant animals in a year or two," said James, whose company has an American subsidiary in Virginia.
Anticipating the swirl of ethical concerns raised by Dolly, James and the institute alerted watchdog groups in Britain; Dolly was not to have made her debut until Wednesday, but a major British newspaper broke the news embargo Saturday, Griffin said.

Scientists in Scotland have announced the birth of the world's first successfully cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep.
Dolly, who was created at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, was actually born on 5 July 1996 although her arrival has only just been revealed.
Dolly is the first mammal to have been successfully cloned from an adult cell. Previous clonings have been from embryo cells.
The sheep's birth has been heralded as one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the decade although it is likely to spark ethical controversy.
Scientists in Scotland cloned a ewe by inserting DNA from a single sheep cell into an egg and implanted it in a surrogate mother.
They now have a healthy seven-month-old sheep - Dolly - who is an exact genetic duplicate of the animal from which the single cell was taken.
DNA tests have revealed that Dolly is identical to the ewe who donated the udder cell and is unrelated to the surrogate mother.

Dr Wilmut also revealed the thinking behind the sheep's name: "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's."

If Dr. Ian Wilmut of Scotland had been an American researcher trying to get a federal grant to clone a sheep - a feat he announced Saturday - the request would not have been approved, experts in the United States say. And not because the work was too scary or controversial. His goal is just too practical, and he comes from the wrong side of the scientific tracks.
Wilmut is from the world of animal science, a parallel universe to the high-profile, high-technology world of molecular biology. And, as became abundantly clear immediately after his announcement, the interests of his field are not those of the biologists who focus on genes and their control, who work with small animals, like mice, and who concentrate on the fine details of molecular interactions inside cells.
Dr. Lee Silver, a biology professor at Princeton University, agreed. "No way can you write a grant proposal saying you want to clone a sheep," he said. Reviewers like himself would immediately ask, "What questions are you asking?" Silver said. It would not be enough for scientists to argue that they simply wanted to make some sheep into drug factories. To get a grant, researchers have to explain how they will study a biological system and how they will take it apart to understand its molecular basis, Silver said.

Researchers Successfully Clone Sheep -- Creating Copies Of Humans Could Be Possible

Scottish researchers have broken one of nature's greatest taboos by cloning a lamb from a single cell of an adult animal, a breakthrough that opens the door to the possibility of cloning humans.
Although the remarkable achievement is being hailed as a potentially great advance in animal agriculture, it could create an ethical quagmire about its use in humans.
The first report of cloning a mammal - making a genetically identical copy from a single body cell - appears in the Feb. 27 issue of the British science journal Nature.
Researchers headed by Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland, showed that a fully differentiated cell from the mammary tissue of a ewe could be manipulated in such a way as to create a genetically identical copy of the animal it was taken from.
The results of the cloning research had been embargoed by the journal Nature until Wednesday. But the Reuters news agency, quoting an author of the study, reported details yesterday.
First said that in the United States there are no laws banning human cloning research, as there are in some European countries.
Thus, if a wealthy person wanted to clone himself, theoretically it could be done, he said.
"A private clinic could set up and clone that person just as nice as could be. There are no rules or restrictions preventing it," he said.
The National Advisory Board on Ethics in Reproduction, which is supported by federal and private money, studied human cloning and concluded that it had no merit for human society, said First, a member of the board.

Wilmut and his team, whose work is to be published Thursday in the journal Nature, pioneered the process of growing an animal identical to its mother from scratch. But the institute has long experience in genetically engineering farm animals. "Trans-genic animals require teamwork between a molecular biologist, an embryologist, great surgical skill, available farmland and skilled husbandry. We have them all," Griffin said.
"This is a world center for excellence. People are attracted here by the high quality of life and exciting science," said Ron James, general manager of PPL Therapeutics, the biotechnology company that shares the one-story institute's campus-like setting about half an hour from Edinburgh. PPL supports Wilmut's research and James is excited at the prospect that genetically engineered sheep could be cloned to expand production of medicines now difficult and expensive to extract.
Some advances will come more quickly than others, he said. "Genetic engineering may be of only limited use . . . but I think we may be seeing disease-resistant animals in a year or two," said James, whose company has an American subsidiary in Virginia.
Anticipating the swirl of ethical concerns raised by Dolly, James and the institute alerted watchdog groups in Britain; Dolly was not to have made her debut until Wednesday, but a major British newspaper broke the news embargo Saturday, Griffin said.

§ 2331. Definitions
As used in this chapter—
(1) the term “international terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, or transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they appear intended to intimidate or coerce, or the locale in which their perpetrators operate or seek asylum;
(2) the term “national of the United States” has the meaning given such term in section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act;
(3) the term “person” means any individual or entity capable of holding a legal or beneficial interest in property;
(4) the term “act of war” means any act occurring in the course of—
(A) declared war;
(B) armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or
(C) armed conflict between military forces of any origin; and
(5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

After my short nap yesterday late evening, when back to sleep after midnight and slept pretty soundly until after 7. Had a dream that seemed to occur just before I woke up. I remembered again today that I rarely get sick. I do get sick, cold, flu, etc., but only if I am around sick people that infect me. I have gone out and beat myself into the ground to the point of hypothermia and still didn't sick. This reminds me of that movie Unbreakable where he talks about not getting sick. I have started thinking that when people cough around me, especially in my direction, they are trying to infect me. Either because they were put up to it, or just because they are malicious. I've noticed that some people just enjoy tearing down stuff that other people created. Some people enjoy creating, other people, defective humans, just enjoy destroying other people's creations.
Someone spoke my apparently false name this morning in a conspicously staged manner. That tells me I am not getting my real identity back today. Maybe tomorrow.
They have been driving, or herding, me for a long time.
I had a slight cold shortly after moving onto this floor, but other than that, I haven't been sick a single day since leaving Microsoft, even after using these nasty-ass computers here on this floor. I worry people are going to increase their efforts to make me sick though simply because they know I worry about it.

I also thought more about that sci-fi series from a few years back, Back Step. And I realized that I am a chrononaut. There is a literary vehicle for time travel. And in the spirit of that last episode of TNG, it starts with something small in the future, and as you look farther back in time, the larger it gets. There are some other nuances there I haven't fully figured out yet. Part of it is that my false identity is confusing me. That was an element of Back Step, where Parker was the only one who remembered all the alternate realities.

Now I understand why Microsoft created that area at the entrance I walked through every day to work. They called it "Mission Control." To my right as I was walking out of the building, they had a large photo of three enlisted U.S. Navy sailors saluting. I saw that same photo on the classmates.com website. One day, I became convinced they even had a hidden camera in my Jeep. One clue was something Vince Maraia kept asking me about the dashboard.
I'm beginning to think that all those times I was sick with what I thought was the flu, were actually the result of being poisoned. I was watching something on tv the other day about a woman who poisoned her husband with anti-freeze. The symptoms of anti-freeze poisoning are similar to the flu, according to that tv episode. That may explain why I was thinking about that sometime last year, someone was trying to tell me something.
I wonder if this scar on my hip is actually from getting hacked with a machete.
