The helicopter crew lowered a line to survivors to tow them to shore. First to receive the line, Bert Hamilton, who was treading water about ten feet from the floating tail, took the single lifeline dangling beneath the chopper and passed it under his arms. The others watched while the helicopter carried him a hundred yards to the Virginia shore and returned. The helicopter pilot had to gently move the survivor across the ice, while avoiding the sides of the bridge and keeping an eye on the crowd.

There was a bunch of stuff in my dreams last night, but I only remember one part. I was also very tired when I woke up, but couldn't go back to sleep. The part of the dream I do remember is where I was walking down some stairs. It seemed to be outside, as in stairs leading down the outside of a building, a factory maybe. I am thinking it was at the end of something, a conclusion of something. I turned around after going down a couple of the stairs and was organizing some stuff, books maybe. I couldn't get them all together or something and I think I was going to have to make a second trip to bring them all down. Within the boxes and books, I pulled out a hat and put it on. It was a U.S. Navy Officer's cover.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- According to a recent study by the Navy Advancement Center in Pensacola, Sailors looking for the best chances for advancement should consider sea duty over shore duty when given the option by their detailers.
The study showed statistically significant differences in the average standard exam scores, average final multiple scores and percent advancement for Sailors on sea duty. Advancements for Sailors on sea duty in paygrades E-4 to E-6 ranged from four to seven percent higher than their shore duty counterparts.
"Sailors are using their knowledge and training on sea duty while working directly in their rating, and that gets them advanced," said Jim Hawthorne, head of the Navy's Enlisted Advancement System Division at the Naval Education and Training Professional Development and Technology Center (NETPDTC). "While shore duty has quality-of-life advantages, the data clearly shows that sea duty has an advancement advantage."
"The chiefs writing the exam questions are asked what they expect their Sailors to know in the fleet and put that into the exam," said Master Chief Electrician's Mate (SS) Jeromie Cook, NETPDTC command master chief. "The advancement exams for most rates are focused on knowledge and skills that are acquired on sea duty, so to perform well on the exam, that's where you need to spend significant time."

My buddy Doug
also had a Phoebe Cates kind of girlfriend in my artifical and symbolic memory.
Doug an Operations Specialist 2nd Class Petty Officer in my "C" school class at Dam Neck. He was changing rates to Fire Controlman while I was already a Fire Controlman 3rd Class, having been promoted to that rank in the fleet. After we graduated that specialist school for the MK152 computer, he was given the rank of Fire Controlman 2nd Class, while I didn't get any kind of promotion myself. We were the only two Petty Officer's in the class and the other's were E-3 Seaman.

We were somewhere, maybe in the Caribbean, and we were conducting a sonar exercise with one of our submarines. Apparantly the captain started pinging the submarine with active sonar as we were leaving port so we always knew where it was. My first school was the U.S. Navy Basic Electricity and Electronics at the Service School Command in Orlando, Florida, and I completed that course in April 1986. I am quite certain that, in the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, I started there in February 1986. From there, I drove my 1978 Ford Explorer pickup on a long drive to the Chicago-area where I began the Fire Control Technician "A" School.
I graduated from Great Lakes in November 1986 and went back to
house on Hicks Road on 30 days leave before I was due to attend MK152 Guided Missile Fire Control Computer Complex school, in Dam Neck, Virginia.

Fire Controlman
Fire Controlman (abbreviated as FC) is a United States Navy occupational rating.
The Origin In 1985 the name of this Navy rating has changed back to Fire Controlman (FC). This allowed for the separation of the submarine rate FT from Surface rate FT to FC. FC was the original name of the rate through WWII when optic devices called a Rangefinder were used. After WWII, when the duties changed to more technical things like radar and computers, the name was changed to Fire Control Technician (FT).

Petty Officer Third Class
Petty Officer Third Class is the fourth enlisted rank in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, just above Seaman and below Petty Officer Second Class, and is the lowest rank of non-commissioned officer, equivalent to a Corporal in the U.S. Army and Marines. Petty Officer Third Class shares the same pay grade as Senior Airman in the Air Force, which no longer has an NCO rank corresponding with E-4.
Unlike the Seaman and lower ranks, advancement to Petty Officer Third Class is not automatic given time in service, but is also contingent on performance evaluations by their superiors and rate examinations (test of specialty knowledge), except for certain technical ratings which carry automatic advancement to PO3, after successful completion of the rating's "A" school and fulfillment of time in rate requirements. The advancement cycle is currently every 6 months. Only a certain number of billets (job openings for this rank) open up biannually and all Seamen compete. The top scorers are chosen for advancement, but only in sufficient quantities to fill the billets available.
Petty Officers serve a dual role as both technical experts and as leaders. Unlike the sailors below them, there is no such thing as an "undesignated Petty Officer." Every petty officer has both a rank and rate (job, similar to an MOS or AFSC in other branches). The rank and rate combined are known collectively as a sailors rating. A petty officer's full title is a combination of the two. Thus, a Petty Officer Third Class who has the rate of Fire Control Technician is called a Fire Control Technician Third Class.
Each rating has an official abbreviation, such as FC for Fire Controlman, STS for Sonar Technician Submarines, or ET for Electronics Technician. When combined with the petty officer level, this gives the short-hand for the petty officer's rank, such as FC3 for Fire Controlman Third Class.

My Son, My Son (1975)

Plot Summary for

Ma and Pa Kettle are comic characters who first appeared in the 1945 best-selling novel The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald about life on a chicken farm. She based them on real-life farming neighbors[1] in Washington state, U.S.A. In 1947, Universal Pictures adapted it into a film starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray, with Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride as the Kettles. After positive audience reaction, Ma and Pa Kettle and their fifteen children became the subject a series of their own very popular comic films.
Pa (Franklin Kettle, played by Percy Kilbride) is a gentle, slow-speaking, slow-thinking and lazy man. His only talents appear to be avoiding work and winning contests. Ma (Phoebe Kettle, played by Marjorie Main) is a robust country woman with a potato sack figure, raucous, more ambitious and smarter than Pa, but not by much, and can easily be fooled.
