But combat requirements were not, and Ellington knew that sentiment's place in the great military scheme of things fell below the need to hit targets.
He rotated the aircraft off the pavement and headed east alone. Tonight he carried no weapons save Sidewinders and antiradar missiles for self-defense. His F-19A was burdened with fuel tanks instead of bombs. He settled to an initial flight altitude of three thousand feet and checked his instruments, making a slight adjustment in the aircraft's trim before starting a slow descent to five hundred feet. That was his altitude on crossing the Weser.
"Got some activity on the ground, Duke," Eisly reported. "Looks like a column of tanks and troop carriers heading northeast on Highway 64."
"Report it in." In this sector, everything that moved was a target. A minute later, they crossed the Leine north of Alfeld. They could see the distant flashes of artillery, and Ellington banked left to keep clear. A six-inch shell in its ballistic arc didn't care if the Frisbee was invisible or not.

WASHINGTON - A morning of remembrance turned into one of flashbacks, fear and media missteps Friday when a Coast Guard exercise - unfolding near Pentagon ceremonies marking the Sept. 11, 2001, anniversary - was mistaken as an attack. The false reports of gunfire on the river briefly spooked the capital, sending FBI agents to the scene and grounding flights.
The episode left the Coast Guard promising to "take a good hard look at what we did here today" and military families sore that officials would simulate a confrontation on the Potomac River on a day of raw emotions and high security.
But the exercise, involving speeding boats and at least one helicopter, probably would have passed unnoticed except that two TV networks confused simulated chatter over a Coast Guard radio for actual events and reported that the Coast Guard had opened fire on a suspicious vessel near ceremonies attended by President Barack Obama.
A chain of errors on television and online raised fears the capital might be under assault eight years to the day - almost the moment - after the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. CNN reported 10 shots had been fired, based on information it heard over the network's police scanner.

Manolis Andronicos, a Greek archeologist who discovered royal tombs of ancient Macedonia, probably including that of Alexander the Great's father, died yesterday at a hospital in Salonika, Greece. He was 73 years old and lived in Salonika.
Dr. Andronicos had cancer of the liver and suffered a stroke a month ago, said a niece, Nina Travlou-Einhorn of New York City. She said she did not know the immediate cause of death.
The crowning achievement of Dr. Andronicos's career came in 1977 in the village of Vergina, in northern Greece. He had been excavating there for 40 years, finding rich tombs and artifacts from ancient times.
Finally, 17 feet underground, he struck the largest tomb at the site and announced the discovery of the tomb of Philip II (382-336 B.C.), the Macedon King who conquered all of Greece and was the father of the conqueror Alexander the Great. Cautious Acceptance
Dr. Andronicos, a professor of archeology at the University of Salonika, based his conclusion on ivory heads found on the tomb floor that resembled known portraits of Philip and Alexander. Chemical dating placed the tomb between 350 and 320 B.C., and no other Macedonian king was buried in northern Greece during that time.
At the time the tomb was discovered, scholars said it was one of the most splendid and important archeological finds since World War II. They generally, though cautiously, accepted the evidence that associated the tomb with Philip. But to this day, there has been no proof that this was Philip's tomb. Philip was assassinated in 336 B.C.
Among the treasures of the tomb were the first complete painting from the Hellenistic period, silver and gold ornaments and weapons and a marble sarcophagus containing a gold casket with bones believed to be those of Philip. Dr. Andronicos said a smaller casket might have held the remains of Olympias, the first of Philip's seven wives and the mother of Alexander. Offset Any Athenian Bias
In his book, "Vergina: The Royal Tombs," Dr. Andronicos said the discovery provided "new information about Macedonian Hellenism." Previous knowledge had been based almost exclusively on Athenian literary sources. He noted that the view from Athens was often biased because Macedonia was a serious political rival.
The discovery appeared to confirm a previously disputed theory that Vergina, not Edessa farther north, was the site of Aegae, the capital of ancient Macedonia.
Dr. Andronicos was born in Bursa, in northern Turkey, in 1919 and began studying classical archeology at the University of Salonika in the 1930's, receiving his doctorate there in 1952. He spent two years of post-doctoral studies at Oxford University.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.

Frank Perry
Frank J. Perry, Jr. (August 21, 1930 – August 29, 1995) was an American stage and film director, producer and screenwriter.
A veteran of the Korean War, he returned to the entertainment industry after being discharged and made his Hollywood directorial debut in 1962 with the low-budget drama film David and Lisa. Based on the novel by Theodore Isaac Rubin, the screenplay was written by his wife, Eleanor Perry, who would receive a nomination for an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay. A character study of two emotionally disturbed teenagers, the film was successful at the box office and met with much critical acclaim, earning him a nomination for an Academy Award for Directing.
Perry went on to direct and produce a number of films, including The Swimmer in 1968 based on a John Cheever story and 1969's Trilogy written by Truman Capote. Frank and Eleanor Perry divorced in 1971.
Perry is most regarded for his character studies involving a dysfunctional family such as that in his wife's script of the Sue Kaufman novel Diary of a Mad Housewife that earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Carrie Snodgress and his 1972 film Play It As It Lays starring Tuesday Weld that brought her a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination. Both of these films Perry produced and directed, but he is probably best remembered for directing the controversial 1981 bio-drama Mommie Dearest, an adaptation of a biography by actress Joan Crawford's adoptive daughter, which portrayed the famous movie starlet as a cruel, sadistic tyrant.

Pentagon officials said that lookouts on the frigate that was damaged, the Samuel B. Roberts, had sighted several mines in the water just before the explosion. The ship tried unsuccessfully to avoid the mines, the officials said.
Previously, Pentagon officials had said there was no direct evidence to show that the blast was caused by a mine, although this seemed the most likely possibility. Ten crew members were injured, two of them seriously.

I come before you today with a heavy heart. Much has been said about the reconfirmation of Gary Zarker, how it has been an open process with an opportunity for many voices to be heard. And I agree it has. It has been an opportunity for a tremendous outpouring of support for Gary from almost every walk of life.
From our nation’s capitol, Senator Cantwell and Congressman Inslee spoke in favor of Gary because they clearly know the risks we are facing from the Bush Administration and FERC. They know Gary has provided national leadership to keep our public power safe from Enron-inspired deregulation.
From our downtown business community, we heard from chamber of commerce leaders as well as businesses who have suffered greatly from the energy crisis. They came to Gary’s defense. They said keep Gary, we have confidence in his ability to provide affordable, reliable energy.
From our environmental community, leaders praised Gary for turning Seattle City Light into a beacon for environment stewardship and responsibility.
From the utility industry, experts have reminded us that no utility on the west coast fared well during the energy crisis and —until yesterday — no Chief Executive Officer of a utility has been fired for the unfortunate events that overtook the entire west coast during the energy crisis.
From the Skagit valley, the chairman of the Swinomish tribe spoke how Gary is a trusted partner in restoring salmon runs to the Skagit River.
And most importantly, from inside City Light itself. We heard powerful testimony—not just from the upper ranks of City Light management, but from the rank and file—that Gary commands the respect and admiration of our valued employees at City Light.
When I reflect on Gary’s career, I think back to 1995 when Gary took the reins at Seattle City Light. City Light was in turmoil. A short unhappy tenure of Gary’s predecessor left the utility in poor morale. Labor unions were irate. Women employees and employees of color were incensed. Environmentalists and tribes were outraged.
It is a sad day for the ratepayers, the utility and this city. I am deeply disappointed in the Council’s decision yesterday to not reconfirm Gary Zarker as City Light’s Superintendent.
I feel as though I came into the third act of a three act tragedy. We have all played our roles in this outcome. When I came into office, I had the opportunity to decide
There was a lot of talk of politics in the Council Chambers yesterday. It should come as a shock to no one that the Council’s decision was all about politics.
Political leadership that has the courage to say – "I am responsible not only for any mistakes that may have been made in the past but also for finding the right answers in the future".
Council has played their role. Through City law, they exercise the authority
They have done that. I respect their right to make this decision, even though I strongly disagree with it.
As one Councilmember stated yesterday, now the ratepayers and the voters will have their chance to evaluate the council’s decisions. They will get to answer the question of whether the council was looking for a solution, or looking for a scapegoat.
City Light is on the right track, we are strong and we will overcome.

NEW YORK - An emotional Paula Jones said, "I feel that I have won," when asked about the settlement that ended her sexual harassment lawsuit against President Clinton.
"I think I have made an impact in the workplace and I do believe that will prevail over any of the other things in the end," she told the syndicated television program Inside Edition in a two-part interview to be broadcast Wednesday and Thursday.
Some transcripts of the interview were released Saturday.
Clinton agreed Friday to pay Mrs. Jones $850,000 to drop her sexual harassment lawsuit - with no apology or admission of guilt - ending the four-year legal battle that spurred the impeachment proceedings against him.
Jones, who at one point in the interview began sobbing and stormed out of the room, said that if she could speak with Hillary Rodham Clinton, "I would just try to explain to her that, no matter who the man is, nobody can treat you like this and use you and just throw you out the door like some piece of meat."
She added that she probably wouldn't get the chance, because," . . . She probably hates me."
Jones is under contract not to speak to other reporters through Nov. 30.
Jones alleged that Clinton, when he was governor of Arkansas and she was a state employee, made a crude advance in a room at a Little Rock hotel in 1991. Clinton has denied her accusation.

Woman Claims Clinton Sexually Harassed Her In '91

WASHINGTON - A former Arkansas state employee, saying she wanted to restore her "good reputation," charged yesterday that then-Gov. Bill Clinton made sexual advances toward her in his hotel room during a 1991 conference in Little Rock.
The charges by Paula Jones at a news conference here are the latest in a series of allegations of sexual misconduct that have plagued Clinton since he began his drive for the presidency in 1992.
In a letter to Clinton, Jones' lawyer, Daniel Traylor, asked for a public apology and warned of a possible lawsuit.
"It is not true," said White House communications director Mark Gearan. "The incident never happened." He said Clinton did not know the woman.
Another senior White House official denounced the event as a "Republican dog-and-pony show" aimed at attacking Clinton.
Jones, who now lives in California, said in an affidavit and in response to reporters' questions that she went to Clinton's hotel room because an Arkansas state trooper told her the governor wanted to talk to her.
Jones was accompanied yesterday by her husband, Steven, who said: "What happened in that room was a disgrace to Paula. I have bad feelings toward Mr. Clinton."
Jones' account of the episode was supported by affidavits from a co-worker, Pamela Blackard, and a friend, Debra Ballentine, both of whom said Jones told them about the incident on the day it allegedly occurred, May 8, 1991.
The story, which identified her only as "Paula," reported that she had spent an hour in Clinton's room and had told the trooper she was willing to become the governor's "regular girlfriend," if Clinton "so desired."
Jones appeared at the news conference along with Arkansas troopers Roger Perry and Larry Patterson, who have accused Clinton of sexual indiscretions, and Cliff Jackson, a former Oxford classmate of Clinton's who has devoted the last two years to turning up embarrassing information from the president's past.
The three were announcing a "Troopergate Whistleblower Fund" to aid people who blow the whistle on official wrongdoing.

Paula Corbin Jones (born Paula Rosalee Corbin on September 17, 1966, in Lonoke, Arkansas) is a former Arkansas state employee who sued President Bill Clinton for sexual harassment. Eventually, the court dismissed the lawsuit, before trial, on the grounds that Jones failed to demonstrate any damages. However, while the dismissal was on appeal, Clinton entered into an out-of-court settlement by agreeing to pay Jones $850,000.
The impeachment trial of President Clinton on perjury and obstruction of justice charges was based on statements he made during the depositions for the Paula Jones lawsuit. The specific statements were about the nature of his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, with whom he denied having a sexual relationship.
According to Jones' account that is no longer denied but also not confirmed by Bill Clinton under terms of the settlement, on May 8, 1991, Paula Jones was escorted to the room of Clinton, then governor of Arkansas, in the Excelsior (now Peabody) Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he propositioned her. She claimed she kept quiet about the incident until 1994, when a David Brock story in American Spectator told a lurid account, sometimes referred to as Troopergate, about an Arkansas employee named "Paula" offering to be Clinton's girlfriend. Jones filed a sexual harassment suit against Clinton on May 6, 1994, two days prior to the 3-year statute of limitations, and sought $750,000.00 in damages
