Courts-martial in the United States
Courts-martial in the United States are criminal trials conducted by the Military of the United States. Most commonly, courts-martial are convened to try members of the U.S. military for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which is the U.S. military's criminal code. However, they can also be convened for other purposes, including military tribunals and the enforcement of martial law in an occupied territory. Courts-martial are governed by the rules of procedure and evidence laid out in the Manual for Courts-Martial and Military Rules of Evidence, respectively.
a military judge determines questions of law, and the members of the panel (or military judge in a judge-alone case) determine questions of fact.

General of the Armies
General of the Armies and General of the Armies of the United States are the highest possible ranks in the United States Army.
After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present,"clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington

The Fleet Admiral rank is reserved for war-time use only

United States Marshals Service
The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a United States federal law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice (see 28 U.S.C. § 561). Although the Marshals Service itself dates only to 1969, the office of U.S. Marshal is the oldest federal law enforcement office in the United States.
The USMS is the enforcement arm of the United States federal courts. U.S. Marshals protect court officers and buildings and ensure the effective operation of the judicial system. The US Marshals Service assists with court security and prisoner transport, serves arrest warrants and seeks fugitives.
Regional Organization
The U.S. court system is divided into 94 Districts, each with a U.S. Marshal, a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-15) (and an Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-14) in certain larger districts), Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-13), and as many Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-5 and above) and Special Deputy U.S. Marshals as needed.
The US Marshal of a US Circuit Court is the US Marshal in whose district that court is located.
The Director and each United States Marshal is appointed by the President of the United States and subject to confirmation by the United States Senate. The District U.S. Marshal is traditionally appointed from a list of qualified law enforcement personnel for that district or state. Each state has at least one district, while several larger states have three or more.
Titles
United States Marshal—for the top executive Marshal's Service position (political appointment) in a Federal judicial district.
Chief Deputy United States Marshal—the senior career manager for the Federal judicial district who is responsible for management of the Marshal's office and staff.

Hey Rudy,
I found several credited to you on this website:
http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/
The one that caught my attention is listed below, along with the caption on the photo. Can you confirm that the cruiser in the background is actually the Jouett?. I magnified the image and I am quite certain the number on the hull is a '28' and not a '29.' There is a little shadow on the second number that indicates to me that it has the closed lower loop of an eight and a nine wouldn't have that shadow. Or more properly, it is the painted on shadow that produces the effect of raised numbers. I was on the Wainwright during the 1988 Persian Gulf deployment as an FC2 and I thought this might be a good artifact to add to the Wainwright Veteran Association.

Hi Kerry, I was out of the office the last three days. Yes, The hull number looks like a "28". I don't remember the USS JOUETT around when I was onboard the Roberts. I spent 18 hours onboard the Samuel B. Roberts photographing the damage and video taping interviews and I was trying to catch a ride on any ship in the area going back to Bahrain. I did hear the The USS Wainwright was in the area but not going my way.
That photo was taken the morning after and I was burning off the last shots in the camera before a helicopter flight out.

Thanks for the info Rudy. Yeah, it was one hell of a ride on the Wainwright after that. We had stopped in Bahrain earlier, but we didn't touch ground again until a liberty port on our way back to Charleston. We stopped at Palma Mallorca and it was quite the extreme, going from Bahrain to the topless beaches of Palma. I was certainly also glad to see Charleston again. I saw your name on the credits for that Clooney vampire flick from a few years ago. Sounds like you've done pretty well for yourself. Going from a photographer to, I assume from your email address, to working for Paramount Studios. That's a pretty good recruiting story for the Navy. Take care, Kerry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Controlman
Fire Controlman
Fire Controlman (abbreviated as FC) is a United States Navy occupational rating.
Fire Controlmen (FC) provide system employment recommendations; perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on digital computer equipment, subsystems, and systems; operate and maintain combat and weapons direction systems, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile systems, and gun fire control systems at the organizational and intermediate level; inspect, test, align, and repair micro/minicomputers and associated peripheral equipment, data conversion units, data display equipment, data link terminal equipment, print devices, and system related equipment; make analysis for detailed systems, computer programs, electronics, and electronic casualty control; and operate associated built-in and external test equipment; load, initialize, and run preprogrammed diagnostic, performance and testing routines for digital computer equipment, digital subsystems, digital systems, and overall combat systems.
FCs typically operate weapon systems on-board surface combatant ships. They are trained in the repair, maintenance, operation and employment of weapons such as the Tomahawk Missile System, the Close-In Weapons System, the 5"/54 caliber Mark 45 gun Weapon System and it's associated MK86 Gun Fire Control System, the Sea Sparrow Missile System, and the Harpoon Missile Systems. These include their associated computer and sensor packages. Their job is somewhat unique in that they are trained to troubleshoot and repair their systems, as well as operate them. These responsibilities are typically split up between different ratings for various types of electronic equipment.
In essence, they "pull the trigger", to defend the ship from tactical threats, or to make an offensive strike against a hostile target.
Another area of responsibility for FCs is the Aegis weapon system, which includes the most powerful search radar in the world, the SPY-1, as well the MK99 Fire Control System, used for terminal guidance of Standard Missiles, and the Aegis Computer Suite.
The Origin In 1985 the name of this Navy rating has changed back to Fire Controlman (FC). This allowed for the separation of the submarine rate FT from Surface rate FT to FC. FC was the original name of the rate through WWII when optic devices called a Rangefinder were used. After WWII, when the duties changed to more technical things like radar and computers, the name was changed to Fire Control Technician (FT). The FT name is now used exclusively for Fire Control personnel on Submarines. The rating insignia is an optical rangefinder (on a tripod), with two lightning bolts signifying the technical side. Until 1985 it had always been just the rangefinder without the lightning bolts.
FCs maintain the control systems used in aiming and firing weapons on all equipped ships. Complex computers, electronics, electrical, and hydraulic equipment is required to ensure the accuracy of guided missile and surface gunfire control systems. FCs are responsible for the operation, routine care, and repair of this equipment, which includes radars, computers, weapons-direction equipment, target-designation systems, gyroscopes, and rangefinders.

Deepwater Horizon
As oil rig sinks, hope fades
Chances of rescuing the 11 missing workers diminish by the hour, Coast Guard says
By BRETT CLANTON and MONICA HATCHER
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
April 29, 2010, 4:05PM
Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.
