Doctor Zee
Doctor Zee is a recurring fictional character in the short-lived science fiction series Galactica 1980.
The role was portrayed by two actors. In the three-hour pilot episode, titled "Galactica Discovers Earth," child actor Robbie Rist, best known for his appearance as "Cousin Oliver" in The Brady Bunch, played Zee. Later, when Galactica 1980 was picked up as a continuing series, another young actor, Patrick Stuart, took over the role and appeared in all subsequent episodes: "The Super Scouts, Parts 1 and 2"; "Spaceball"; "The Night the Cylons Landed, Parts 1 and 2", "Space Croppers" and "The Return of Starbuck".
The pilot episode says that Doctor Zee is actually two cerebral mutated brothers one of 14 years of age and the other of 16, that are pure intelligence beings. In that episode Doctor Zee states that pure intelligence beings like themselves only occur once about every 10 million years. In the pilot episode both brothers appear to speak through the same physical body. It is mentioned that one brother is named Doctor Zee and the other Doctor Zen.
In the series it appeared that Doctor Zee was only one very prodigies person. He was born during the period of time between the end of the original Battlestar Galactica series (circa 1969, or after the first Moon landing), and when the Galactica finds Earth in 1980. His origin isn't explained at the start of the series, but he's soon introduced as a scientific "whiz" who has great influence over Commander Adama and the Council of Twelve. However, not everyone is comfortable with the young Zee having so much influence; Xavier expressed this in the pilot.
Zee convinces Adama not to attempt direct contact with humanity, because the nations of Earth aren't unified and are ill-equipped to resist the Cylons, who have been clandestinely following the Fleet.
Zee is responsible for creating most (if not all) of the gizmos used throughout the series - for example, the invisibility screen, as well as the method of time travel first employed by the renegade Xavier. Zee is an expert on any topic about which he's consulted, including sociology, history and agriculture. Just after the pilot episode, he completes construction of an anti-gravity craft that resembles a UFO ("The Super Scouts, Parts 1 and 2").
At the end of the series, in "The Return of Starbuck", we finally learn the origin of Doctor Zee. He's the "spiritual son" of Lieutenant Starbuck (Starbuck made the jealous Cylon "Cy" the 'godfather' of the baby), and was born on a planet where Starbuck was stranded years earlier. While on that remote planet, Starbuck was visited by Angela, who may have been from the race that created the Ship of Lights (introduced in the original series' two-part episode "War of the Gods"). [This race was never named on-screen, but was referred to in the scripts as the Seraphs]. Angela gave birth to Zee, and Starbuck shipped them off to rendezvous with the Fleet in a small escape pod that was too small to carry him. Angela herself disappeared and didn't accompany Zee all the way to the Fleet. Although Adama confirms this information, much of Zee's origin remains a mystery.

The Corona program was a series of American strategic reconnaissance satellites produced and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency Directorate of Science & Technology with substantial assistance from the U.S. Air Force. The Corona satellites used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), Red China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972. The name of this program is sometimes seen as "CORONA", but its actual name "Corona" was a codeword, not an acronym for anything.
The Corona project was pushed forward especially following the shooting down of a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960.
The Corona satellites were designated KH-1, KH-2, KH-3, KH-4, KH-4A and KH-4B. KH stood for Key Hole or Keyhole
Discoverer
The first dozen or more Corona satellites and their launchings were cloaked with disinformation as being part of a space technology development program called the Discoverer program. The first test launches for the Corona/Discoverer were carried out early in 1959. The first Corona launch containing a camera was carried out in June 1959 with the cover name Discoverer 4. This was a 750 kilogram satellite launched by a Thor-Agena rocket.
The plan for the Corona program was for its satellites to return canisters of exposed film to the Earth in re-entry capsules, called by the slang term "buckets", which were to be recovered in mid-air by a specially-equipped USAF planes during their parachute descent. (The buckets were designed to float on the water for a short period of time for possible recovery by U.S. Navy ships, and then to sink if the recovery failed. This was for secrecy purposes.)
The return capsule of the Discoverer 13 mission, which launched August 10, 1960, was successfully recovered the next day. This was the first time that any object had been recovered successfully from orbit.

Description
Discoverer 13 was an earth-orbiting satellite designed to test spacecraft engineering techniques and to attempt deceleration, reentry through the atmosphere, and recovery from the sea of an instrument package. It represented the first-ever successful recovery of an object from orbit. The cylindrical Agena A stage that was placed in orbit carried a telemetry system, a tape recorder, receivers for command signals from the ground, a horizon scanner, and a 120-lb recovery capsule that contained an American flag. The capsule was a bowl-shaped configuration 22 in. in diameter and 27 in. deep. A conical afterbody increased the total length to about 40 in. A Thiokol retrorocket, mounted at the end of the afterbody, decelerated the capsule out of orbit. A 40-lb monitoring system in the capsule reported on selected events, such as firing of the retrorocket, jettisoning of the heat shield, and others.
Discoverer 13 was launched on a Thor-Agena from Vandenberg (complex 75-3 on pad 50 on 10 August 1960. At 130 km altitude the first stage separated and the Agena placed the satellite into a 250 x 705 km, 82.9 degree inclination near-polar orbit On 11 August, after 17 orbits, a command was sent from a ground station on Kodiak Island to the spacecraft to start the recovery sequence. The Agena pitched down 60 degrees and the recovery vehicle was ejected by small springs. A cold gas system spun the vehicle up for stability, a retrorocket fired, reducing the velocity by about 400 m/s, and then the spin system despun the spacecraft. The orbit ejection subsystem dropped off just before it started to heat up on reentry, leaving the capsule and heat shield. At 15,000 meters a small parachute was deployed, a radio beacon and strobe lights were activated, and the heat shield was relelased. After stabilization a larger parachute was deployed. The capsule splashed
down in the Pacific Ocean 610 km NNW of Honolulu. The Haiti Victory, a Navy ship, sent out a helicopter which dropped frogmen into the water to attach a collar to the capsule for helicopter retrieval. It was brought back to the ship and taken to Pearl harbor. The flag was presented to President Eisenhower on 15 August 1960.

Mayor Nickels’ budget includes $603 million for city bored tunnel-related projects, eight months after he signed an agreement with the Governor and King County Executive. Now the Council will take a week to evaluate his proposal and approve a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) endorsing it. MOA legislation will be introduced Monday and up for a vote Tuesday in the Transportation Committee, with a final vote expected the following Monday.

MOA legislation will be introduced Monday and up for a vote Tuesday in the Transportation Committee, with a final vote expected the following Monday.

On June 7, 1960, a nuclear-tipped missile burst into flames on its launcher at an Air Force base nestled in the heart of New Jersey's Pine Barrens, triggering sirens that shattered the afternoon stillness and sent a brief, nervous shock through the region.
Airmen poured water on the burning BOMARC missile and put the fire out within an hour.
With international tensions high over the downing of Gary Powers' U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union the month before, the incident seemed minor in comparison, and attention shifted elsewhere.
But 40 years later, an estimated 300 grams, or 10 and one-half ounces, of plutonium from the melted warhead remain in the sandy soil, entombed in asphalt and concrete _ a radioactive relic of the Cold War and just one of the toxic hot spots from the era that dot the nation.
The Air Force has allocated $6 million to clean up the site on the eastern edge of the Fort Dix Military Reservation, but the plans to cart away 10,000 cubic yards of soil, concrete and steel have stalled because surrounding communities do not want radioactive waste shipped through them.
And one radiation expert wonders if it should be moved at all, saying that stirring up the site during an intrusive cleanup might pose a greater risk.
The Air Force calls the site RW-01, or Radioactive Waste-01, and its history offers a window to a time when trust in the government was high and a nuclear accident was easily forgotten.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.

Kathi Goertzen was born in Seattle on April 30, 1958.
On December 1, 1998, it was announced that Goertzen had been suffering from a type of meningioma, a noncancerous tumor that grows on the brain stem that affects speech and the ability to swallow. The announcement led to tons of longtime KOMO viewers pouring support for Kathi, wishing for a speedy recovery. Treatment went quick for the first occurrence, and she returned to KOMO News on January 3, 1999.[2] When she returned to the program, her co-anchor, Dan Lewis, said (in tears), "Kathi, don't ever leave me like that again."
The tumor recurred in 2005, resulting in Goertzen announcing a leave of absence on September 16.

The Soviet explosion was a political rather than a military act. The device exploded does not add in effectiveness against military targets to nuclear weapons now available both to the Soviet Union and the United States. It does not affect the basic balance of nuclear power. Any such weapon would be primarily a mass killer of people in war-and the testing of this device primarily an incitement to fright and panic in the cold war.

Tsar Bomba, literally "Tsar-bomb", is the nickname for the AN602 hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Ivan"[citation needed] by its developers) — the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated, and currently the most powerful explosive ever detonated in human history.
Developed by the Soviet Union, the bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT (420 PJ); however, the bomb yield was reduced by half in order to limit the amount of nuclear fallout that would result. One bomb was built and tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The weapon never entered service.
A mock bomb was stored in the Russian Nuclear Weapons Museum in Sarov.
The Tsar Bomba was a three-stage hydrogen bomb with a yield of 57 megatons (Mt). This is equivalent to ten times the amount of all the explosives used in World War II combined, including Little Boy and Fat Man, the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A three-stage H-bomb uses a fission bomb primary to compress a thermonuclear secondary, as in most H-bombs, and then uses energy from the resulting explosion to compress a much larger additional thermonuclear stage. However, there is evidence that the Tsar Bomba had a number of third stages rather than a single very large one.
The initial three-stage design was capable of approximately 100 Mt, but at a cost of too much radioactive fallout. To limit fallout, the third stage, and possibly the second stage, had a lead tamper instead of a uranium-238 fusion tamper (which greatly amplifies the reaction by fissioning uranium atoms with fast neutrons from the fusion reaction). This eliminated fast fission by the fusion-stage neutrons, so that approximately 97% of the total energy resulted from fusion alone (as such, it was one of the "cleanest" nuclear bombs ever created, generating a very low amount of fallout relative to its yield). There was a strong incentive for this modification since most of the fallout from a test of the bomb would fall on populated Soviet territory.
The Tsar Bomba was flown to its test site by a specially modified Tu-95V release plane, flown by Major Andrei Durnovtsev, which took off from an airfield in the Kola peninsula. The release plane was accompanied by a Tu-16 observer plane that took air samples and filmed the test. Both aircraft were painted with a special reflective white paint to limit heat damage.
The bomb, weighing 27 tons, was so large (8 metres (26 ft) long by 2 metres (6.6 ft) in diameter) that the Tu-95V had to have its bomb bay doors and fuselage fuel tanks removed. The bomb was attached to an 800 kilogram fall-retardation parachute, which gave the release and observer planes time to fly about 45 kilometres (28 mi) from ground zero.
The Tsar Bomba detonated at 11:32 on October 30, 1961 over the Mityushikha Bay nuclear testing range (Sukhoy Nos Zone C), north of the Arctic Circle on Novaya Zemlya Island in the Arctic Sea. The bomb was dropped from an altitude of 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi); it was designed to detonate at a height of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) over the land surface (4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) over sea level) by barometric sensors.
The original U.S. estimate of the yield was 57 Mt, but since 1991 all Russian sources have stated its yield as 50 Mt. Khrushchev warned in a filmed speech to the Communist parliament of the existence of a 100 Mt bomb (technically the design was capable of this yield). The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from ground zero. The heat from the explosion could have caused third degree burns 100 km (62 miles) away from ground zero. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 kilometres (40 mi) high (nearly seven times higher than Mount Everest) and 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide. The explosion could be seen and felt in Finland, breaking windows there and in Sweden. Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage up to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) away. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Its Richter
magnitude was about 5 to 5.25. The energy yield was around 7.1 on the Richter scale, but since the bomb was detonated in air rather than underground, most of the energy was not converted to seismic waves.
Since 50 Mt is 2.1×1017 joules, the average power produced during the entire fission-fusion process, lasting around 39 nanoseconds, was about 5.4×1024 watts or 5.4 yottawatts (5.4 septillion watts). This is equivalent to approximately 1.4% of the power output of the Sun.
The Tsar Bomba is the single most physically powerful device ever utilized throughout the history of humanity. Its size and weight excluded a successful delivery in case of a real war.
