Political Flak May Fly With President's New Jet

WASHINGTON - How do you hide a $330 million airplane? One that weighs 836,000 pounds, features an operating room, 85 telephones and a main deck that rivals the size of a fancy home?
You don't. And that's a potential problem for the White House and President Bush's political advisers.
The new Air Force One, a giant Boeing 747-200B with all those features and many more, was quietly delivered to Andrews Air Force Base just outside Washington late yesterday afternoon.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - The government took delivery Thursday of the jumbo jet that will become Air Force One - a longer-range craft that seems destined to feed President Bush's peripatetic nature.
"Look out world, here we come," said White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater as he announced delivery of the specially outfitted Boeing 747 to the Air Force.
"This thing doesn't go extraterrestrial, does it?" Fitzwater jokingly asked aides.
Fitzwater said the cost of the two planes, which will bristle with security and intelligence equipment, and the new hangar at Andrews will cost $410 million on a fixed-price contract with Boeing.

Vince Lombardi High School keeps losing principals to nervous breakdowns because of the students' love of rock 'n' roll and their disregard of education. The putative leader of the students is Riff Randell, who loves the music of the Ramones. A new principal, the rock-music-hating Miss Evelyn Togar, is brought in and promises to put an end to the music craze. When Miss Togar and a group of parents attempt to burn a pile of rock records, the students take over the high school, joined by the Ramones, who are made honorary students. When the police are summoned and demand that the students evacuate the building, they do so, which leads to an explosive finale.

The Security Council has demanded the immediate release of LieutenantColonel William R. Higgins, Chief of the UN observer group in Lebanon, who was kidnapped while on duty on 17 February. It also decided that the 5,844-strong UN peace-keeping Force in Lebanon will stay in that country at least through January 1989. Both Council actions, taken on 29 July, were unanimous.
By resolution 618 (1988), the Council condemned the abduction and asked Member States "to use their influence in any way possible" to obtain the release of Lt.-Col. Higgins, a United States national. He was taken from his vehicle by armed men while returning from a meeting with a local leader of the Amal movement in Tyre. A videotape was sent to a Beirut news agency on 23 February, showing Lt.-Col. Higgins reading conditions for his release.

Electoral fraud
Electoral fraud is illegal interference with the process of an election. Acts of fraud tend to involve affecting vote counts to bring about a election result, whether by increasing the vote share of the favored candidate, depressing the vote share of the rival candidates or both. What electoral fraud is under law varies from country to country; methods which are illegal in one country may not be in another. Many kinds of voter fraud are outlawed in electoral legislation but others are in violation of general laws such as those banning assault, harassment or libel. Although technically the term 'electoral fraud' covers only those acts which are illegal, the term is sometimes used to describe acts which although legal, are considered to be morally unacceptable, outside the spirit of electoral laws or in violation of the principles of democracy. Even the perception of fraud can be damaging as it makes people less inclined to accept election results. This can lead to the breakdown of democracy and the establishment of a dictatorship.
Electoral fraud is not limited to political polls and can happen in any election where the potential gain is worth the risk for the cheater; as in elections for labor union officials, student councils, sports judging, and the awarding of merit to books, films, music or television programmes.
Despite many instances of electoral fraud, it remains a difficult phenomenon to study. This follows from its inherent illegality. Harsh penalties aimed at deterring electoral fraud make it likely that individuals who perpetrate fraud do so with the expectation that it either will not be discovered or will be excused.
Prosecution
In countries with strong laws and effective legal systems, lawsuits can be brought against those who have allegedly committed fraud; but determent with legal prosecution would not be enough. Although the penalties for getting caught may be severe, the rewards for succeeding are likely to be worth the risk. The rewards range from benefits in contracting to total control of a country.

It's night. The Skipper comes sleepwalking out of his hut. He's acting like he's back in World War II. His yelling wakes up Gilligan who follows him. Skipper is trying to convert a radio into a transmitter. But when Skipper yells about the dive bombers Gilligan jumps into the lagoon. Then the Skipper heads back to the hut. Gilligan wakes the Skipper up by dripping on him. Gilligan explains that the Skipper was sleepwalking but he doesn't believe it, insisting that he was in the hammock all night. He even suggests that Gilligan was really sleepwalking.
Sipper and Professor are listening to the radio when they hear about Alice McNeil flying around the world. According to the Skipper's calculations she's going to be flying right over the island. He suggests building a big signal fire to catch the plane's attention but is concerned about cloud cover blocking the view of the fire. Gilligan mentions the Skipper's sleepwalking episode where he turned the radio into a transmitter. Skipper suddenly remembers and admitts to Gilligan it was his dream after all.

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.
