Sculpture park hailed as beautiful future for site once polluted, neglected

By Stuart Eskenazi

Seattle Times staff reporter

A once-contaminated sprawl of waterfront land overlooking the Olympic Mountains and Elliott Bay is being overlooked no more.

Several hundred people gathered there yesterday to celebrate the former industrial site's

"The park is a major step in improving the public use of our waterfront," SAM board Chairman Jon Shirley said yesterday at a groundbreaking ceremony.

"We are taking land in the heart of this great city that was used and misused and we are making it new again," Mayor Greg Nickels said.

Mimi Gardner Gates, SAM's director, said a remaining challenge for the sculpture park is a metal barn rising from the lower 2.5-acre portion of the site, closest to the shoreline. The fate of the barn, a maintenance facility for Metro's waterfront streetcar, is unsettled as city, county, Port of Seattle and museum officials discuss

Using gold shovels, civic and political leaders who have supported the park turned dirt to mark the groundbreaking. Some wore baseball caps bearing the slogan: I AM SAM.

Sheehan, others protest at Rove event

Rove was speaking to the Associated Republicans of Texas, and ticket prices started at $200.

"Pat, did you get her check before she left?" Rove quipped to the GOP group's executive director, Pat Robbins, as the crowd of 300 laughed, the newspaper reported.

"I don't question the patriotism of our critics. Many are hardworking public servants who are doing the best they can. Some of them are people looking for a free meal," Rove said, drawing more laughs.

National Museum of Iraq

The National Museum of Iraq is a museum located in Baghdad, Iraq. It contains precious relics from Mesopotamian civilization, thousands of which were looted in 2003 during the Iraq War. On February 23, 2009, the museum was reopened for a day by Iraqi prime minister Al-Maliki, with about half of its looted contents still missing.

Collections

Because of the archaeological riches of Mesopotamia, its collections are amongst the most important in the world; and it has a fine record of scholarship and display. The British connection with the museum (and with Iraq) means that exhibits have always been displayed bilingually (English and Arabic). It contains important artifacts from the over 5,000 year long history of Mesopotamia in 28 galleries and vaults.
