MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A juror was dismissed Monday after reporting that a woman dropped a bag of $120,000 in cash at her home and offered her more money if she would vote to acquit seven people charged with stealing more than $40 million from a program meant to feed children during the pandemic.
“This is completely beyond the pale,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said in court on Monday. “This is outrageous behavior. This is stuff that happens in mob movies.”
These seven are the first of 70 defendants expected to go to trial in a conspiracy that cost taxpayers $250 million. Eighteen others have pleaded guilty, and authorities said they recovered about $50 million in one of the nation's largest pandemic-related fraud cases. Prosecutors say just a fraction of the money went to feed low-income kids, while the rest was spent on luxury cars, jewelry, travel and property.
During the trial that began in April, defense attorneys questioned the quality of the FBI's investigation and suggested that this might be more of a case of record-keeping problems than fraud as these defendants sought to keep up with rapidly changing rules for the food aid program.
These seven initial defendants were affiliated with a restaurant that participated in the food aid program. Those still awaiting trial include Feeding our Future's founder Aimee Bock, who has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.
The 23-year-old juror said she immediately turned over the bag of cash to police. She said a woman left it with her father-in-law Sunday with the message that she’d get another bag of cash if she voted to acquit, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Defense attorney Andrew Birrell told the judge that the bag of cash is “a troubling and upsetting accusation.”
Before allowing the trial to continue with more closing arguments on Monday, U.S. District Judge Nancy Brasel questioned the remaining 17 jurors and alternates, and none reported any unauthorized contact.

There was that dream I had the other night, where I was inside a missile. I remembered today the similarity with this movie, in that Cochrane converted an ICBM into his warp ship. But why would someone create a connection between me and Cochrane? I didn't create warp drive in the past only to have someone block my memory of that, did I? It's funny, when I read something the other day about Data arguing with Einstein, it reminded me of something I was writing in my journal back in the early '90s. I was wondering why it was impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. A couple years ago I was writing about it again. The idea presented itself to me about why it was impossible, something about atoms not being able to work because electrons could not transfer energy faster than the speed of light. I wondered if it was possible to create some kind of process to transfer energy to those atoms, not unlike a cell's mitochondria works. Today I have been wondering if anything I remember about the past is real. Do I have a different past? Am I really who I think I am? The stuff I imagine happening to me sometimes, did that stuff really happen?

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) pressed New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to pardon former President Trump following his recent conviction in his hush money trial.
“Donald Trump is a serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon who thrives on portraying himself as a victim,” Phillips said in a post on social platform X Friday. “@GovKathyHochul should pardon him for the good of the country.”
Trump became the first former U.S. president to have the status of being a convicted felon on Thursday, following a jury finding him guilty on all counts of falsifying business records to hide alleged affairs amid his 2016 campaign.
Shortly after the jury read the verdict, Trump railed against the hush money trial, calling it “rigged” and “disgraceful.”

With mortar and artillery battles erupting around them, United Nations peacekeepers today in effect dismantled their headquarters in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and evacuated more than 200 staff members.
After hours of negotiations with the commanders of Serbian militia units that encircled Sarajevo, about 80 United Nations vehicles passed through barricades to reach the headquarters in the western suburbs. The evacuees emerged from bunkers beneath the steel-and-glass headquarters and a nearby accommodation complex where they had taken shelter for two days while Serbian forces shelled the area from the surrounding hills.
Shortly afterward, not long past dawn, the vehicles began the difficult 250-mile journey back across the mountainous roads, carrying the peacekeeping personnel toward the safety of Belgrade, the Serbian and Yugoslav capital.
On the way out of Sarajevo, the white-painted United Nations vehicles were halted for several hours at one of 90 roadblocks on their route.
Reuters reported that a group of United Nations commanders trying to reach the Sarajevo headquarters this morning was also detained by Serbian militiamen, who demanded the use of the United Nations vehicles to transport their dead and wounded.
The withdrawal was not the end of the peacekeeping mission, which although it was based in Bosnia, was created to supervise a cease-fire in Croatia, the neighboring republic that seceded last year, precipitating a civil war. 120 to Stay in Sarajevo
The 14,400-member peacekeeping force will be run from Belgrade and Zagreb, the Croatian capital. About 120 troops will remain in Sarajevo to help with food convoys and to seek a lasting cease-fire in Bosnia.
Today's withdrawal was ominous for residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ethnically mixed former republic, sandwiched between Croatia, Serbia and the Adriatic Sea, has endured two months of fighting by Serbian, Croatian and Muslim Slav forces. Many of the new nation's 4.3 million people are short of food and medicine, and in many cases without electricity or fresh water.
With foreign powers apparently unable to influence events, Sarajevo appeared to be facing the kind of miseries not seen in Europe since World War II.
Corpses littered the streets, fires blazed in shelled buildings, and more than 100,000 children were among those hiding with their families in shelters.
One man, a professor of literature who has studied in the United States, telephoned friends in Belgrade today to say he and his family, taking shelter in a basement in Sarajevo, had less than a two-day supply of food, but were afraid to venture out into the fighting.
The cease-fire negotiated on Friday collapsed, and attempts for new talks in Sarajevo fell through today when representatives of the warring sides did not show up. The fighting increased as the Tuesday deadline approached for the withdrawal of the Serbian-controlled Yugoslav national army from Bosnia. The Serbian forces tried to cut the city in half, taking for themselves the part that includes many government buildings, the television station and its transmitter.
In practice, the army withdrawal amounts to little more than the transfer of about 55,000 troops to the new Bosnian Serbian army. The withdrawing units appeared to be busy destroying buildings, equipment and airfield runways.
Tanyug, the Yugoslav news agency, reported that a runway at the military airfield in Bihac, in the northwestern part of the republic, close to Croatia, was dynamited today. Residents close to the airport in Sarajevo said they had heard reports that a similar action was being contemplated there.
The dismantling of the United Nations headquarters is officially only temporary, until conditions in Sarajevo improve. But the impact seemed likely to be far-reaching, after the withdrawal this week of the last of the European Community's military observers in Bosnia, also for safety reasons.
The only other major international organization that remains is the Swiss-based International Committee of the Red Cross, but its officials have said they may pull out if the safety of their personnel cannot be assured.
For the 120 peacekeepers who will remain, a primary task is likely to be assisting a convoy of 48 truckloads of food from Belgrade and Zagreb. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees has been trying to get the 600 tons of food into Sarajevo, but the convoy was put off for a week after Serbian militia commanders on Friday delayed assurances of safe passage.
Against the background of the deteriorating situation in Sarajevo, the Security Council's latest resolution on Bosnia, adopted on Friday night, was seen by United Nations representatives here as largely unrealistic. Among other things, the resolution directed by Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the Secretary General, to "keep under review" the possibility of a peacekeeping mission for Bosnia, in addition to the one in Croatia.
"About all we've been able to accomplish in Bosnia is to keep from getting any of our people killed," a United Nations official said. "To consider anything else there right now is impossible."

Costly Offensive Fails to End Serb Siege of Sarajevo

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Sarajevo’s Muslim-led defenders waged a desperate and costly offensive Tuesday to break the five-month Serb siege of the city, where dwindling supplies of clean water raised fears of epidemics.
The attacks--launched on the eve of a new round of peace talks--failed to punch through Bosnian Serb lines and left many casualties. A U.N. official estimated one Bosnian fighter was lost for each six feet of ground gained.
In Serbia, backers of federal Prime Minister Milan Panic and of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic squared off against each other, each side demanding that the other’s leader resign. Some Serbs fear that differences between the two men, which intensified after Panic committed the Serbs to surrendering Bosnian territory at a London peace conference last week, could push Serbia itself into civil war.
A new round of talks sponsored by the United Nations and the European Community is scheduled to begin in Geneva on Thursday.
Marrack Goulding, head of U.N. peacekeeping operations, is due in Sarajevo on Thursday to begin trying to place artillery around Sarajevo under U.N. supervision, as agreed to at the London talks, officials said.
But Goulding’s impending arrival did little to silence guns in Sarajevo.
Bosnian health officials reported 20 people killed and 218 wounded across the republic in a 24-hour period ending early Tuesday, including 13 dead and 119 wounded in the war-ravaged capital.
The figures usually pertain only to civilians. Battlefield casualties appeared to be heavier, although no figures were provided.
Health Ministry officials also warned that Sarajevo had only three days’ supply of chlorine left to purify its water.
Most of the city has been without running water for weeks because of damage to electric lines carrying power to the pumps. Health officials fear that impure water could lead to epidemics of gastric illness.
In the hills around Sarajevo, Bosnian radio said government forces were advancing according to plan. But when asked about his forces’ progress, Zaim Hakovic, a Bosnian commander, responded curtly, “So-so.”
Military observers said government forces were suffering heavy losses--”about one man for every two meters of earth they take,” according to one U.N. officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
On Tuesday, Serbia’s largest opposition party called for mass protests against an effort by Milosevic’s backers in Parliament to oust Panic.
Milosevic’s Socialist Party--formerly the Communists--and the nationalist Serbian Radical Party said Monday they would force a no-confidence vote against Panic, a Serbia-born U.S. citizen. They accused him of “betraying Serbia’s interests” at the London peace conference.
The Serbian Renewal Movement, the main opposition party, called the no-confidence vote, set for Friday, “a desperate attempt by warlords to rid themselves of a man of peace.”
Milosevic supporters say Panic undermined Serbian interests by meeting privately in London with Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and by proposing to recognize the boundaries of former Yugoslav republics as international frontiers.

NATO assumes peacekeeping duties in Bosnia
During a brief military ceremony in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, French General Bernard Janvier, head of the United Nations peacekeeping force, formally transfers military authority in Bosnia to U.S. Admiral Leighton Smith, commander of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces in Southern Europe.
The solemn ceremony cleared the path for the deployment of 60,000 NATO troops to enforce the Dayton Peace Accords, signed in Paris by the leaders of the former Yugoslavia on December 14. The U.S.-backed peace plan was proposed during talks in Dayton, Ohio, earlier in the year and was reluctantly accepted by the last of the belligerent parties in November, ending four years of bloody conflict in the former Yugoslavia, which cost more than 200,000 lives.
The United Nations peacekeeping mission to Bosnia began in early 1992, shortly after the war erupted over efforts by the Bosnian Serbs to achieve independence from Bosnia-Herzegovina and unite with Serbia. Although the U.N. force was crucial in distributing humanitarian aid to the impoverished population of Bosnia, it was unable to stop the fighting. Approximately 25,000 U.N. peacekeepers served in Bosnia over three and a half years, and during that time 110 of those were killed, 831 wounded, and hundreds taken hostage.
The NATO force, with its strong U.S. support and focused aim of enforcing the Dayton agreement, was more successful in bringing stability to the war-torn region.

Good morning. About an hour ago I spoke with Secretary Christopher in Dayton, Ohio. He informed me that the Presidents of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia have reached a peace agreement to end the war in Bosnia, to end the worst conflict in Europe since World War II.
After nearly 4 years of 250,000 people killed, 2 million refugees, atrocities that have appalled people all over the world, the people of Bosnia finally have a chance to turn from the horror of war to the promise of peace.

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn’t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

“Will you shut up, Sylvester?” Devins inquired in that soft, intense voice, and Lloyd shut. In his sudden fear he had forgotten the cheers for him in Maximum, and even the unsettling possibility that he might lose a tooth. He suddenly had a vision of Tweety Bird running a number on Sylvester the Cat. Only in his mind, Tweety wasn’t bopping that dumb ole puddy-tat over the head with a mallet or sticking a mousetrap in front of his questing paw; what Lloyd saw was Sylvester strapped into Old Sparky while the parakeet perched on a stool by a big switch. He could even see the guard’s cap on Tweety’s little yellow head.
This was not a particularly amusing picture.
Perhaps Devins saw some of this in his face, because he looked moderately pleased for the first time. He folded his hands on the pile of papers he had taken from his briefcase. “There is no such thing as an accessory when it comes to first-degree murder committed during a felony crime,” he said. “The state has three witnesses who will testify that you and Andrew Freeman were together. That pretty well fries your skinny butt. Do you understand?”
“I—”
“Good. Now to get back to Markham vs. South Carolina. I am going to tell you, in words of one syllable, how the ruling in that case bears on your situation. But first, I ought to remind you of a fact you doubtless learned during one of your trips through the ninth grade: the Constitution of the United States specifically forbids cruel and unusual punishment.”
“Like the fucking lectric chair, damn right,” Lloyd said righteously.
Devins was shaking his head. “That’s where the law was unclear,” he said, “and up until four years ago, the courts had gone round and round and up and down, trying to make sense of it. Does ‘cruel and unusual punishment’ mean things like the electric chair and the gas chamber? Or does it mean the wait between sentencing and execution? The appeals, the delays, the stays, the months and years that certain prisoners—Edgar Smith, Caryl Chessman, and Ted Bundy are probably the most famous—were forced to spend on various Death Rows? The Supreme Court allowed executions to recommence in the late seventies, but Death Rows were still clogged, and that nagging question of cruel and unusual punishment remained. Okay—in Markham vs. South Carolina, you had a man sentenced to the electric chair for the rape-murder of three college co-eds. Premeditation was proved by a diary this fellow, Jon Markham, had kept. The jury sentenced him to death.”
“Bad shit,” Lloyd whispered.
Devins nodded, and gave Lloyd a slightly sour smile. “The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which reconfirmed that capital punishment was not cruel and unusual under certain circumstances. The court suggested that sooner was better… from a legal standpoint. Are you beginning to get it, Sylvester? Are you beginning to see?”
Lloyd didn’t.

Pretrial hearings for former President Donald Trump’s federal criminal trial began Tuesday at the Alto Lee Adams Sr. U.S. Courthouse on U.S. 1 at Orange Avenue.
The 2 p.m. hearing assessed how documents containing sensitive information would be handled and presented at trial and discussion of a trial date. Lawyers for Trump and codefendant Waltine “Walt” Nauta, his valet, attended the hearing.

The Pinkerton liability rule was pronounced by the Supreme Court of the United States in Pinkerton v. United States, in 1946. Walter and Daniel Pinkerton were brothers who were charged with one count of conspiracy and ten substantive counts under the Internal Revenue Code. A jury found each of them guilty of the conspiracy and several of the substantive counts. The main issue arose from the fact that there was no evidence to show that Daniel Pinkerton participated directly in the commission of the substantive offenses, although there was evidence showing that these substantive offenses were committed by Walter Pinkerton in furtherance of the unlawful agreement or conspiracy existing between the brothers.
The Pinkerton liability rule
Similar to the rule of aiding and abetting, the overt acts of one partner in a conspiracy are attributable to all partners. The Supreme Court concluded that if an overt act that is an essential ingredient in a conspiracy can be supplied by one conspirator, then the same or other acts in furtherance of the conspiracy should be attributable to the others for the purpose of holding them responsible for the substantive offense(s).

For the first time, NASA's Galileo spacecraft flew close to Jupiter's moon Callisto this morning (Nov. 4), passing within 1,104 kilometers (686 miles) of the stark, crater-studded natural satellite at 13:34 Universal Time (5:34 a.m. Pacific Standard Time).
The flyby was by far the closest any spacecraft has ever come to Callisto, the outermost of the four big moons orbiting Jupiter

Is not critical - so no rush - that I receive an answer to my question about Wainwright's activities in summer 1989
The facts as I remember it all seem so tantalizing consistent to me. I've explored several different possibilities and explanations, such as "time travel information". The theory that people with knowledge of future events knew that event would happen in Iowa, they couldn't stop it, but what they could do was send me along clandestinely, for some reason, among several I have theorized. So - because of that knowledge of the future - I theorize - this code-pattern begins to exhibit a familiar pattern pointing to the event in Iowa.
But I ain't mad.
Begins for me with surgery on 04/19/1989. Precisely three months later is the event in Iowa.

I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base.
