New Mexico Epstein commission makes first subpoenas

SANTA FE, N.M., May 26 (Reuters) - New Mexico legislators probing Jeffrey Epstein on Monday said they have issued their first subpoenas, calling for evidence on the late sex offender from 14 entities including federal law enforcement agencies, the state governor's office and a Santa Fe scientific institute.
The New Mexico Truth Commission, in its second meeting since it was set up in February, also heard testimony from Rachel Benavidez, a survivor of alleged sexual abuse at Epstein's New Mexico ranch, as well as family members of the late Virginia Giuffre, another survivor.
The commission was established following the Justice Department's release of millions of Epstein-related files that shed new light on activities at the ranch.
State Representative Andrea Reeb, a member of the bi-partisan committee, said the investigation would seek information on how state and federal agencies failed with regards to Epstein before subpoenaing individuals.
"Let's say, for example, we decide to pull in the former attorney general, we need to have that information of what their office has in order to properly question them," Reeb told reporters after the meeting.
Among those the Truth Commission subpoenaed were Deutsche Bank, the FBI, the New Mexico Department of Justice, the New Mexico State Land Commission, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and the Santa Fe Institute, a scientific foundation in the state's capitol, according to New Mexico Representative Andrea Romero, chair of the group.

Epstein Truth Commission to hold meeting Monday
SANTA FE, N.M. – New Mexico’s Epstein Truth Commission will hold its first public meeting on Monday as members begin reviewing possible law changes tied to justice for survivors.
State Rep. Andrea Romero chairs the commission and said it plans to examine what cannot be prosecuted and what laws may need to change. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. at the Roundhouse and will also be available on Zoom.
The meeting agenda includes introductions for members and the legal team, an overview of the commission’s mission and updates on action taken so far and its work plan.

New Mexico lawmakers said Monday they are demanding documents from an array of government and private institutions as the first major step in their effort to tell the full story of what Jeffrey Epstein did in the state — and whether any other people should be prosecuted for crimes there.
A committee known as the New Mexico Truth Commission expects to send subpoenas this week to 14 targets. They include federal agencies that investigated Epstein in the past — the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI — and state and local law enforcement agencies that looked into Epstein. Demands are also expected to go to Epstein’s former banks — Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase — and the Santa Fe Institute, a nonprofit scientific research institution he supported.
If the committee finds evidence that someone committed a crime that can be prosecuted, it will refer the case to the appropriate law enforcement agency, either in New Mexico or elsewhere, members said.

New Nova In the Night Sky: A Star Explosion Explained

Stargazers are thrilled over the surprise appearance of a star explosion, known as a nova, in the night sky last week, but there is more to this cosmic event than meets the eye.
The new Nova Delphinus 2013 was first spotted in the constellation Delphinus (The Dolphin) by Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki on Aug. 14 and quickly confirmed by other skywatchers soon after. Novas are stars that are undergoing a powerful eruption, causing them to brighten significantly, so that they appear suddenly in the night sky where previously no star was visible.
Since its discovery, this nova has brightened rapidly to become an object visible to the naked eye, though stargazers will need to be away from city lights in order to see it clearly.
