If I was 16 when made that trip to the outer solar system, then I would have started flying at age 8. Those 50 combat missions would have been in Vietnam with the allies.

So maybe it was 1967 when I first flew a jet on my own.

I have thought, a couple times the past few days, that I might have been captured by the North Vietnamese after I was shot down, but they didn't really know what to make of me. They held me for a while until my family got me out.

I may have fought in the Vietnam war more than I understand. The thought occurs to me that I was going over there every summer break from Princeton University. It's all jumbled in my mind though. I want to say that I was in that POW camp, but I was also in some kind of civilian re-education camp.

The reason for the plot element of "Apollo Creed" seeming over-confident is actually about me not wanting to take any chances about hitting the comet as planned after my ship was heavily damaged on 2/22/1976. I wasn't over-confident about defeating the comet but was rather confident in my calculations that I would not be able to successfully divert the comet unless I hit it as planned.

Another major element in the planning was that I could not have made any practical plans to hit it sooner that I planned except for maybe in a difference of a few days.

The inherent flaw of the Orion propulsion required that I hit the comet as it neared the planet Saturn because I needed to use the gravity of the planet Saturn to stop my ship so I could change direction and then begin an Orion propulsion run that would allow me to intercept the comet. If not for the encounter with the planet Saturn then I never would have been able to stop my ship as I approached the comet.

There were other factors I considered but the plan I created seemed the most practical.

So I was not going to turn back for repairs and then to set out again to strike the comet that had become within easy visual range of Earth.

Just as with the lighted spaceships of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," I discovered life on the Jupiter moon Callisto because I could see lights under the ice as though some great mass of phosphorescent were floating in an ocean below the ice on the surface.

I had a lot of drilling equipment in my ship and I worried about the pressure wave of breaking holes in the ice to the ocean below. The water would have frozen instantly but the pressure would have probably been highly explosive in force if I had simply drilled a hole through the ice.

But I had studied such topics in various activities such as with the SEALs but also with geologists and deep sea oil drillers among others.

For a while I have been thinking there was something dramatically different about my participation on the Apollo 17 flight compared to my participating on the earlier Apollo flights to the lunar surface.

I have been thinking that only the command module pilot even knew I was onboard that flight and that was because the Saturn rocket was being used to transport my shuttle craft to the Moon and only the command module pilot could know about it. The flight commander and the lunar module pilot were briefed only that there would be a rendevous with a special cargo after reaching orbit and after extracting the lunar module. The command module pilot had to know because he was responsible for the docking manuever. I had been launched into orbit separately along with a special cargo I was transporting to the lunar surface for my training routine. We did something similar with Apollo 16 but Apollo 17 was much different in terms of secrecy because of the special cargo that my shuttle craft was carrying to the lunar surface and that I would transport to the far side of the Moon so it could not be seen from Earth.

With Apollo 17, I never even interacted personally with the Apollo 17 crew for the entire flight and I was in my shuttle craft that was attached to the Saturn V rocket. Apollo 16 was similar but I landed close enough to the Apollo 16 Orion lunar landing site that they drove the rover over to my landing site.

Men from Earth (Hardcover)

by Buzz Aldrin (Author)

From Library Journal

To coincide with the 20th anniversary this July of the first manned lunar landing, these books provide intimate accounts of how NASA accomplished the national goal of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade. In his book, Aldrin, the second man on the moon, interweaves the story of U.S. and Soviet efforts to reach the moon with his first-hand experience flying both the Gemini and Apollo missions during the height of the space race. His recounting of his two space flights is compelling, especially the account of the nearly aborted Apollo 11 lunar landing.
