It all got started with the first installment, Resident Evil, which hit theaters 20 years ago today on March 15, 2002. The film starred Milla Jovovich as Alice, who wakes up on the floor of a shower, not sure where she is or what’s going on.

Narrator: At the beginning of the 21st century, the Umbrella Corporation had become the largest commercial entity in the United States. Nine out of every ten homes contain its products. Its political and financial influence is felt everywhere. In public, it is the world's leading supplier of computer technology, medical products, and healthcare. Unknown, even to its own employees, its massive profits are generated by military technology, genetic experimentation, and viral weaponry.

Quotes

Dr. Weir: [describing how the Event Horizon functions] The ship doesn't really go faster than light; what it does is it creates a dimensional gateway that allows it to jump instantaneously from one point of the universe to another light years away.

Lt. Starck, Executive Officer: How?

Dr. Weir: [stammering] Well, that's - that's difficult to - it's all math...

Miller: Try us, Doctor.

Dr. Weir: Right. Well, um, using layman's terms... Use a rotating magnetic field to focus a narrow beam of gravitons - these, in turn, fold space-time consistent with Weyl tensor dynamics until the space-time curvature becomes infinitely large, and you produce a singularity. Now, the singularity...

Miller: [interrupting, dumbfounded] "Layman's terms"?

Cooper: Well, fuck layman's terms! Do you speak English?

George H.W. Bush: I'll ruin you like a Japanese banquet! I'll take your head and -- Gorbachev! Heh, what are you doing here?

Mikhail Gorbachev: I just dropped by with present for warming of house. Instead, find you grappling with local oaf.

Homer Simpson: Oh, brought some of your commie friends to help you fight dirty, eh?

George H.W. Bush: But Mikhail, they put a wig on my head, my memoirs --

Everything But The Girl

"Missing"

I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door
But you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere
Like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain

Could you be dead?
You always were two steps ahead
Of everyone
We'd walk behind while you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you shout
Down to me

Smith: No, I haven't seen anything and I don't need to see anything sir but I can tell you... this ship is fucked.

Dr. Weir: Well, thank you for that scientific analysis, Mr Smith.

[smirks]

Smith: Yeah, well you don't exactly have to be a scientist to figure it out, do ya?

[grabs Dr. Weir by his uniform]

Miller: [pulls Smith away] All right, all right!

Smith: You break all the laws of physics and you seriously think there wouldn't be a price?

Another artificial and symbolic memory is of connecting a cable on the flight deck of a frigate to recover a helicopter instead of the reality where I was highly skilled at using the tailhook of a U.S. Navy fighter jet to land on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

The FBI arrested two men who had furnished detailed plans to an undercover agent whom they were attempting to recruit for a 12-man crew, with a goal of stealing the U.S. Navy attack submarine USS Trepang (SSN-674), equipped with nuclear missiles, from its base in New London, Connecticut. According to the plan, given to the FBI agent at a meeting in St. Louis, the men planned to board a sub tender at New London, use plastique explosives to sink it and block the harbor, and possibly to fire a nuclear missile at New London or another U.S. city. U.S. Navy Rear Admiral David Cooney commented, "No 12 people off the street are ever going to operate a submarine like this."

The primary objectives of this flight were to rendezvous and perform the first docking between the Space Shuttle and the Russian Space Station Mir on June 29.

I just realized that the Jeep Grand Cherokee I used to have could represent the space shuttle. Something about that lift gate on the back makes me think about the cargo hold on the shuttle. And that J.G.C. was white too. Could 1995 be the first time I was the commander of a shuttle mission?

As Spirits Fly With Atlantis, Delays a Mir Inconvenience : Space: The shuttle pierces a blue sky after Florida storms scratched two launch dates. Linkup with Russian station is on track for Thursday.

June 28, 1995 K.C. COLE TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis cracked open a robin's-egg-blue Florida sky with a deafening roar Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of spectators and NASA officials cheered and sighed with collective relief.

Pounding rain with lightning had been soaking the area for days, preventing two scheduled launches last week and threatening to keep the five U.S. and two Russian crew members indefinitely on the ground. But the storms held off Tuesday.

Atlantis had to begin its journey during a 10-minute window beginning at 3:32 p.m. EDT in order to make its planned docking with the Russian Mir space station, now set for Thursday morning. Mir passed over Kennedy Space Center just minutes before Atlantis took off. By the time the shuttle left the ground, Mir was over Iraq.

"Liftoff of the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission that will herald a new day of international cooperation in space," launch commentator Bruce Buckingham announced as the shuttle, looking like a toy plane attached to a mile-high flamethrower, rode into orbit. The blastoff marked America's 100th manned trip into space.

Soon after launch, Atlantis began a series of rocket firings designed to put it in roughly the same orbit as Mir. Today crew members will continue to line up their orbit and will activate Spacelab, where experiments are stowed. They will also check out equipment and cameras for the docking.

On Thursday, they will drift up toward Mir. The docking itself, Gibson said, will be a "long, slow, laborious process."

One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no
So I tried my best illegal move
A big black and white come and crushed my groove again

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55, oh no, uh

So I signed my name on number 24, hey
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more, huh
I'm gonna throw your ass in the city joint"
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
I say "Yeah!, Oh yeah"

Write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55, oh yeah

(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive 55)
(I can't drive) 55, uh

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer
And I can't get my car out of second gear
What used to take two hours now takes all day
Huh, it took me 16 hours to get to L.A.

Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55

No, no, no, I can't drive, (I can't drive 55)

Doctor, Two Cosmonauts Undergo Medical Tests Aboard Atlantis-Mir

July 01, 1995 From Associated Press

HOUSTON After 3 1/2 months of being the doctor, astronaut Norman E. Thagard became the patient Friday and was poked and probed aboard Atlantis-Mir, the linked U.S. shuttle and Russian space station.

Dr. Ellen Baker drew blood from Thagard, a physician, and his two Russian crew mates and performed physical exams to help scientists understand the effects on the body of long stays in space. Thagard spent 3 1/2 months aboard the space station Mir, a U.S. space endurance record.

Mission Control, meanwhile, was puzzled by the higher than expected use of fuel by Atlantis.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/14/07 6:33 PM

I have been thinking a lot about that scene recently in "Battlestar Galactica." I imagine or remember that I did something similar as I was about to land on an aircraft carrier. It was a highly crazy maneuver but I had a reason. I am thinking that I had just shot down two Libyan fighters and I did it for that reason. I wasn't showing off but I had a suspicion that at least one person on the carrier was reporting my movements and the Libyans, possibly even Soviet fighters, were sent up specifically to shoot me down. I got both of them though and I wanted to do something to cause some chatter. That was one reason. Another is that I was hoping to de-motivate them from attacking me again by showing them just how capable a pilot I was. Everything I read suggests that landing on an aircraft carrier is stressful enough on a good day. So I wanted to do something stunning that would show I was good enough to make such a maneuver even after the intense stress of that combat engagement where they sent up their best to get me. My thoughts are that just as I about to land on the carrier, I pulled what I think is called a barrel-roll. That's not the same as Claire describes as the over-turn performed by Raz over Osirak. Rather, it is similar to that scene recently when "Starbuck" rolled over the top of "Apollo's" ship. I did that and still made a perfect 3-wire landing on the deck. The Captain flipped out over that and my thoughts are conflicted over whether I explained why I did it. I might not have told him because I trusted no one. They were going to pull my wings but somehow I told President Reagan about it, or I didn't have to tell him anything and he had it figured out too and he did his part to keep me flying. So that one objective was to de-motivate them with that stunt. But another objective was to generate chatter that we could use to track down the people reporting my movements to the enemy.

03/14/07 7:09 PM

I have had a lot of thoughts about something I might have been part of in Vietnam. A lot of thoughts I can't articulate. Something about refugees. Thoughts about flying air cover for refugees that were being transported out. I might have flown out some of those refugees too.

The CAG probably called me a maniac for pulling that stunt on approach to the carrier.

Astronauts Undergo More Tests Aboard Joined Spacecraft

July 03, 1995 From Associated Press

NASA has never had an opportunity to study such long-duration space fliers, and consequently wants to know everything about Thagard and cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov.

"I know they are tired at the end of the day. It's a long day," Sullivan said. "But I think they truly believe in the work that's being done, and they're excited about the results."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Russian space agency tested the communication systems on Atlantis, Mir and the Soyuz capsule attached to Mir on Sunday in preparation for the undocking Tuesday.

Thagard, who turns 52 today, said that while he is looking forward to leaving Mir, it has been a memorable four months.

"I joked with these guys . . . you call for a taxi and wait forever," he said. "But the fact is, [Thursday's docking] was an emotional experience, one of the highest, I guess, of my life. I'm awfully glad to be here, and I'm really looking forward to seeing my family."

I remember that day was very hot in Charlotte North Carolina and the Jeep had an instrument panel in the center of the roof towards the front windshield and there was a digital gauge with the outside temperature on it and I can recall that day got up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

I was looking for that reference because I couldn't believe that I was right about the day I bought that vehicle. I feel certain that day was 4 July 1995. What I recalled about it was that was Independence Day and that must have been the year 1995.

Soviet warships being watched in Gulf

Houston Chronicle News Services

TUE 11/05/1985 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

A U.S. Navy vessel is closely monitoring the movements of two Soviet warships that entered the Gulf of Mexico and came within 40 miles of the Texas coast, the U.S. Navy said.

The USS Taylor, American guidedmissile frigate, has been tracking the Soviet ships - a guided-missile destroyer and a guided-missile frigate - since they left Havana Thursday, said Lt. Cmdr. Craig Quigley, a Navy spokesman in Norfolk, Va.

The Taylor is always "within visual range" of the Soviet vessels that were last reported about 100 miles southwest of Tampa, Fla., and moving in a southeasterly direction, possibly toward Cuba, said Quigley.

However, there was no way to determine whether the Soviet warships were preparing to leave the Gulf and return to Havana. "They can always change rudder at a moment's notice," he said.

Curtiss-Wright

Recovery Assist, Secure and Traverse System (RAST)

Navies around the world rely on Curtiss-Wright's Indal RAST (Recovery Assist, Secure and Traverse) system to support ship borne helicopter operations. RAST conducts the securing, maneuvering and traversing tasks with a single Rapid Securing Device (RSD) that is never disconnected from the helicopter while it is on deck. RAST is able to accommodate a wide range of helicopters, even in the most demanding marine environments up to sea state six.

The typical operation of the Indal RAST system begins with the pilot making a normal approach to the flight deck and establishing a hover. The messenger cable is lowered to the deck and is manually connected to the main recovery assist tethering cable, which is then hauled up to the helicopter and automatically locked into the main RAST probe. During a period of quiescence in the ship's motion, the pilot requests the LSO to apply tension to the recovery assist cable. This tension produces a strong centering effect to stabilize the hover and directs the helicopter toward the designated landing area, as the pilot slowly flies the craft down. Immediately upon touchdown, the LSO closes the RSD's arresting beams securing the helicopter probe. The aircraft is ready to be aligned and traversed into the hangar.

Somewhere I wrote about the early months of 1985.

We left the shipyards for our first journey to our permanent homeport in Charleston, South Carolina

The North Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras was not only very stormy but also very, very cold outside.

We had to stand there not only as the helicopter landed on that tiny flight-deck, but also remain beside the helicopter wheels until instructed to remove the chains and chock binding it to the flight deck

I was out there on that flight-deck countless times during my assignment to USS Taylor FFG-50, US Navy, and that was many times I was out there.
