Big Ben's Chime Won't Sound the Same to Londoners for a While
June 5 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. Parliament's Great Clock, better known as Big Ben, will go onto a reduced chiming schedule for about a month while one of its bells is repaired.
Big Ben first chimed across London on May 31, 1859. While one of the clock's four faces was shattered during a 1941 bombing raid that destroyed the chamber of the House of Commons, the mechanism and bells survived World War II.
The tune of the quarter bells was originally written in 1793 for a new clock in St. Mary the Great, the University Church in Cambridge. After it was adopted for the great clock, the composition became known as ``The Westminster Quarters'' and was used by clockmakers worldwide.
The four-note tune is a set of variations on a theme from Handel's ``Messiah.'' According to tradition, the words to it are: ``O Lord our God/Be thou our guide/That by thy help/No foot may slide.''
In the last 50 years, age and weather have succeeded where bombs failed in slowing or stopping the clock. Heavy snow on New Year's Eve 1962 meant it chimed in the new year 10 minutes late. On Aug. 5, 1976, the chiming mechanism broke, and the bells were silent until May 9, 1977. The clock stopped twice in 1997 and again in May 2005, possibly due to hot weather. In October, it was stopped for 33 hours to allow work on the mechanism.

The Westminster Quarters is the most common name for a melody used by a set of clock bells to strike the hour. It is also known as the Westminster Chimes, or the Cambridge Chimes from its place of origin.
This chime is traditionally, though unsubstantiatedly, believed to be a set of variations on the four notes that make up the fifth and sixth measures of "I know that my redeemer liveth" from Handel's Messiah. City leaders praised Gil Kerlikowske as the most polished and experienced choice for Seattle's new police chief - and the best communicator - among the three finalists.
While his selection by Mayor Paul Schell was greeted yesterday with a range of enthusiasm, community leaders and City Council members who will deal with him were mostly united in their support.

This fiction supposes that these unlawful acts are not engaged, conspired, or otherwise directed by the government in question, but by the individual employees or officers of a government who carried out the unlawful acts. Therefore, even though a government may not be held liable for acts committed in its name, individual government agents who commit acts against the Constitution or the law of nations can be held personally liable. (Indeed, their liability is heightened, as they acted under color of law, gravely aggravating the magnitude of the offense; see Ex parte Young, 209 U.S. 123 (1908), as well as Bivens v. Six Unknown Named Agents, 403 U.S. 388 (1971).) This provides an incentive to government agents not to "just follow orders" when those "orders" are criminal.

Today, crime is thought of as an urban phenomenon, but for most of human history it was the rural world that was crime-ridden. Pirates and bandits attacked trade routes, at times severely disrupting commerce, raising costs, insurance rates and prices to the consumer.
Organized crime is deeply linked to the moral problem of integrating barbarian energy into civilized state building. The early Christian world was dubious about the legitimacy of nation-states. St. Augustine famously defined them as what would now be called kleptocracies, states founded on theft: "If justice be disregarded, what are states but large bandit bands, and what are bandit bands but small states?" (De Civ. Dei iv, 4).
Another use of the term "criminal organization" exists in human rights law and refers to an organization which has been found guilty of crimes against humanity. Once an organization has been determined to be a criminal organization, one must only demonstrate that an individual belonged to that organization to be punished and not that the individual actually individually committed illegal acts.[citation needed]
This concept of the criminal organization came into being during the Nuremberg Trials.

Growing brighter every morning in the predawn sky, one of the largest comets ever seen by man, its elongating tail stretching across millions of miles of space, is streaking toward a Christmas rendezvous with the sun. Comet Kohoutek, formally designated C/1973 E1, 1973 XII, and 1973f, was first sighted on March 7, 1973 by Czech astronomer Luboš Kohoutek. It attained perihelion on December 26 that same year.
Kohoutek is a long period comet, with an orbital period of approximately 75,000 years. Kohoutek was hyped by the media as the "comet of the century" because scientists theorized that Kohoutek was an Oort Cloud Object. As such, it was believed likely that this was the comet's first visit to the inner solar system, which would result in a spectacular display of outgassing. However, Kohoutek's display was considered a let-down, leading some to nickname it "Comet Watergate". Infrared and visual telescopic study have led many scientists to conclude, in retrospect, that Kohoutek is actually a Kuiper belt object, which would account for its apparent rocky makeup and lack of outgassing.
However, although it failed to brighten to levels expected, it was still a naked eye object. Its best viewing was in the night sky after perihelion, when it had dimmed to fourth magnitude The comet also sported a tail up to 25° long, along with an anti-tail.
Its greatest visual magnitude was -3, when it was at perihelion, 0.14 au from the Sun. Its orbital inclination is 14.3°.
C/1973 E1 should not be confused with the periodic comet 75D/Kohoutek, which can also be called "Comet Kohoutek" (as could the comets C/1969 O1 and C/1973 D1, also discovered by Luboš Kohoutek as sole discoverer).
This comet was observed by the crew of Skylab 4 and Soyuz 13, thus becoming the first comet to be observed by a manned spacecraft.
That character always reminds me of the reaction I got when I was a lawyer at the age of 14, as well as the fact that I was a licensed medical doctor at the age of 10 years.
I have thought of that ending sequence in that film because there was a Microsoft employee, as with Tom Devey as the Ilan Ramon look-alike, along with Ramona Ramadas, who reminded me of one particular scene of "Mr. Stay-Puft The Marshmallow Man." There was one particular scene in the film of that characters face that made me think of that employee of the Microsoft-Corbis-Al Qaeda alliance. I would think more about that over the years since I left there because I was sitting in that conference room with that employee, which obviously had hidden recording devices, as was everywhere I went, because I said something about Tacoma. I later called the Seattle Police to report my observations but they are also part of the Microsoft-Corbis-Al Qaeda alliance, I have determined.

Fra Mauro was a 15th century Venetian Camaldolese monk who kept his cartography workshop in the monastery of San Michel in Isola Murano, in the Venetian Lagoon. He was also a mapmaker, who in 1457 mapped the totality of the Old world with surprising accuracy, including extensive written comments reflecting the geographic knowledge of his time. The map is known today as the "Fra Mauro map". A critical edition of the map was edited by Piero Falchetta in 2006.
Fra Mauro created the map under a commission by king Afonso V of Portugal. Andrea Bianco, a sailor-cartographer, is recorded as having collaborated with Fra Mauro in creating the map, as payments made to him between 1448 and 1459 testify. The map was completed on April 24, 1459, and sent to Portugal, but didn't survive. Along with the map was a letter from the ruler of Venice. It was for Prince Henry the Navigator, Alfonso V's uncle. It encouraged the prince to continue funding exploratory journeys. Fra Mauro died the next year while he was making a copy of the map for the Seignory of Venice, and the copy was completed by Andrea Bianco. A contemporary commemorative medal in honour of his cartographic work describes Fra Mauro as "geographus incomparabilis".

Boeing's Mulally named new CEO of Ford

DETROIT – Bill Ford, who struggled for five years to steer Ford Motor Co. toward financial stability, is stepping down as chief executive and is being replaced by Alan Mulally, a top executive from the airplane maker Boeing Co.
Ford, part of the founding family at the auto company, will remain as chairman, however, according to today's surprise announcement.
